    Badabun's fake speedrun was pretty bad, but this one was a real world record on a real leaderboard which I think makes it funnier. What do you think?

      That’s survivorship bias. If many of the people who got caught cheating were caught due to bad luck, that means that there are many more similar cheaters out there who didn’t get unlucky-we just don’t know about them because they didn’t get caught.

      Even funnier is the more recent one where the guy was SUPER blatant about blindfolded clicking and had janky vfx work, awful key and anyone with basic knowledge would spot it, even besides all the other obvious hints it's staged like the theatrics in the start the dude does
      But nobody was looking for that and the dude got away with it for years

      Seems largely to highlight what he knew would be an issue and what he did not. Since with all the effort on things showed, clearly was willing to put work in. Trended toward noticing things could given it away in the moment, verses taking time to review the run as a whole.

    A friend of mine who also watches these kinds of videos pointed something out to me about those fake reactions that I can't help but think about every time I see them now:
    "It's the kind of reaction someone who's never set and reached a deeply personal or arduous goal would make. They try to act flippant or cool because they don't understand what the gravity and importance of such an achievement actually feels like. That or they're just really cringey bad actors, point stands either way".
    Watching this kid's reactions definitely reminds me of just that.

      I'm kinda weary of judging people by reactions or expressions of emotions. As an autistic person who's also dealt with depression for years, I've definitely had people misread my reactions or facial expressions to things. Sometimes I just kinda feel nothing when I should feel something cause of the depression, and sometimes my reactions or facial expressions aren't "correct" because of the autism. That being said, I do totally understand what your friend meant. It's also easy to say in retrospect that they were acting suspicious when you already know they cheated.

      I thought his reactions seemed like pretty authentic acting. Most of the time fake reactions overplay their performance with celebration and screaming, where as most speedrunners who actually make world record usually tend to have themselves under control, and often remain calm and relaxed even after realizing they've achieved world record. With the amount of effort that went into faking this run, it wouldn't surprise me that his reaction is the way it is out of imitation, rather than trying to act flippant or cool.

    I just checked some math, the end screen probably wasn't photoshopped that much anyway, considering how 17:35.785 is a multiple of 17ms. He probably just did a normal run, waited at the end until the time was around the time he wanted to get plus 10 minutes, then just edited out the 1 in the 17. That'd also explain why he didn't change the jump amount either, it was already really lazy.

    • @ailurusfulgens1849
      @ailurusfulgens1849 Year ago +128

      Jokes aside I don't think that's conclusive in any way. He might use his keyboard to type and a different peripheral to play, I do that myself.
      It says "spacebar" on screen but that might just be the name of the bind in his software, the actual bind might be something else entirely, I can do exactly that with my peripheral's software.
      Not saying he didn't cheat, I'm saying the keyboard/layout thing doesn't prove/disprove much.

    • @Yes_I_Would_Kent
      @Yes_I_Would_Kent Year ago +95

      @ailurusfulgens1849 That's a fair comment. On it's own the spacebar evidence is not conclusive that he cheated, with the rest of the evidence it seems pretty clear cut.
      I don't play this game but when their community concludes it's cheated with the evidence like the timer, number of jumps, end screen, splicing etc it's fair to take their word.
      Thanks for the nuanced comment, hope others see it & you have a good day!

    your "exposing cheaters/liars/fakers" videos are so well done and incredible. I swear, I watch them with my jaw dropped the majority of the time. I'm always baffled at the level of work that some people will go to just to avoid putting in the work. On the absolute other end of the spectrum, you put so much dedicated work, research, and care into these videos and it shows. I find myself watching them over and over again. You should compile all of your "fakers being caught" videos into a dedicated playlist! Maybe (hopefully) seeing how many liars have been called out by you put all in one place will dissuade people from trying to do it in the future.

      Maybe this is just me, but I don't think Surfin' USA would be the celebration song of anyone under the age of 40, maybe even 50. The song has persisted into this century, but it has no meme appeal because it is far too genuine for a bunch of post ironic tryhard memers to take the piss on. Maybe this is what will catapult The Beach Boys back into pop culture 61 years after the song's release, but I doubt it. Maybe I shouldn't judge, but that detail alone feels so out of place that I personally can't ignore it.

    Hearing Karl describe how the cheater has to do all the acting when they're playing on camera really brought something home to me: in that moment when the cheater "wins," they have to _pretend_ to feel the incredible feeling of victory and accomplishment that they wish they could really have. They have to act it out for an audience while dying inside, and the only way that they can survive the ordeal is to truly _convince_ the audience that they are happy, in ways that the audience can't even understand. The moment of fake victory is probably the most miserable, stressful moment of a cheater's life, when it's supposed to be the most liberating. What a nightmare.

    • @Asupreme
      @Asupreme Year ago +165

      Dude, I didn't even consider this when watching him fake his reaction. Wow. Yeah, no, he really just set himself up to record the worst thing ever, huh? It must've been painful to try and fake that reaction. And having to sit there, the entire time, watching your speedrun as you fake it... wow. Soul-rending.
      ... All that time he spent video editing, acting, splicing, recording, playing- the amount of time put together... He could've done a legit run, and had a genuine reaction. Or a really good video editor. Or someone who watches paint dry.

      Prior cheater here, yes I would have to fake the feeling of excitement but I wasn’t playing for that feeling so it wasn’t a big deal.
      I never felt that feeling of being miserable. People don’t always cheat just to be #1, a lot of time it’s because they just want to fit into a community they like but they push their cheating too far.

    • @comfycat9
      @comfycat9 Year ago +66

      Most cheaters cheat at games they think they are good enough to get high scores at anyway.(Ridiculous logic but people are silly.) Most cheaters feel justified in what they do as a result. There’s the infamous speed run done in person by Cody Miller, who had multiple cheated world records at Halo at the time. When he showed up to do it in person, he bombed so bad that they made a new rule at the event he played at that speedruns that are going embarrassingly badly can be canceled by the event staff. It is worth looking up his Halo speedrun to see a cheater be completely publicly exposed in the most embarrassing way possible, lol.

    • @walkout85
      @walkout85 Year ago +82

      Most cheaters aren't doing it for the actual satisfaction of winning. They do it for the recognition they are hoping to get from others who play the game. So the praise they get from it is the high they want.

      Not really. An academic test anyone can pass if they study enough without a cheat sheet, whether that be 1 person or 1000 people. @Humandefect Most people don't have the fingers for competing at the top level in any game (or any competition in general, you can extend this to anything), some people are capable of reaching a higher skill ceiling because their nerve fibres happen to be better insulated or whatever. You physically can't compete with the best of the best, but people will cheat for the high of pretending they're special. People like Rodd Todgers and Silly Bi***ell, for example. Their egos are based on lies, the BM court case is him protecting his sense of self-worth.
      There's nothing wrong with not being genetically exceptional, but a lot of narcissists and children especially find it hard to swallow that they aren't.

Once or twice I’ve recreated sequences like that on my RUclips channel to improve the comedic effect.

      @justanotheryoutubechannel I think it's more likely that he created his own basic-ass map with a black background and a screen transition, and then created areas transitions with the correct names in his "map", recorded that "gameplay" for his video editing, then overlaid the recorded area name transitions the same way he did with the in-game timer. The area names aren't hand-crafted art assets being displayed, they're just strings of texts rendered by the game engine using a specific font.

      @VikingTeddy That wasn't my point either. My point was pointing out that he had to fake his achievement in order to pretend to experience what he would have felt if he actually did it legitimately. That's downright poetic. Some Greek tragedy tier shit. You could write a book about someone like that slowly being eaten by the knowledge that his celebrations are fake, and that he's not experiencing any of this genuinely.

    To be fair, "two of the most popular custom maps" doesn't mean they were actually speedrun by hundreds of players. Custom Maps is a niche category in Jump King. If the run was on the main leaderboard (of which I'm not a moderator) it would have been caught a lot earlier (based on Seastar's messages on the discord server from around that time he cheated the runs, it was his next goal to "get a world record" on one of the vanilla maps, Ghost of the Babe, but he probably realized that it wouldn't work).
    I was the one who verified the runs in the first place and, since the community and other moderators view the thing that I brought this up to light as "redeeming myself", I'm still a moderator of the custom maps leaderboard (you can say they gave me a second chance). I learned my lesson and I will be much more careful from now on!
    I recommend you to try Jump King yourself if you haven't yet, it's a great game and the community is very wholesome!
    EDIT: Thanks for all the kind words (and for the satirical negative comments too)!
    P.S. thanks for the great, as always, video Karl! ❤

      ridiculous that they gave you a second chance after verifying something so obvious, frankly if that were me I'd have banished you from the community itself, gave 100 lashes, and forced you to play babe of bloodmoon until completion

      The Jump King Custom Map Moderation Team should be utterly embarrassed to retain your employment. It is absolutely unfathomable how you could make such an incredible mistake. Dare I say it's possible it may have been intentional and there is a deeper conspiracy at hand. Disgraceful.

    11:19 "Truth be told, I don't even know how to do this easily." I don't think it'd need to be sophisticated at all. I could mimic that easily without even knowing what chroma keying is in the video editing software I use. My guess is he probably screen capped the title when it was fully opaque, cropped the title, imported the cropped image into the video editor, then mimicked the fade the game uses by setting the opacity at different levels at the right time/frame intervals in the video editor, and then put that on top of the footage.

    It is clear from the glaring issues with the end screen statistics, the edited timer and zone names, he has no idea how the game even works. Would not be surprised if he has spliced together OTHER player's runs.
