  • Uzair Younus is a visiting fellow at the United States Institute of Peace looking at the region of South Asia.
Uzair Younus comes back on the podcast to discuss why Bangladesh is surging ahead of Pakistan, the geoeconomics of South Asia, what impact Biden's presidency may have on Indo-Pak relations and if the recent comments by Pakistan suggest a strategic policy shift.
We also discuss the new State Bank provisions, whether Pakistan should have gone to the IMF, food inflation, the eroding purchasing power, the petroleum crisis and rising extremism.
We get into a deep dive discussion about the sociopolitics and the economy of Pakistan - is there reason to be hopeful or are we headed for an economic disaster? What are the biggest economic challenges facing PTI right now? What are the potential solutions?

At 16:00 he says Maharashtra se log ja rahe hai sehro ki Taraf ya north ki tarha ? Boy does he really knows India ? That migration took place when people left Maharashtra after lockdown to go at there native places. And it was chaotic because of sudden lockdown, Maharashtra is most industrialized state in India and people migrate to Maharashtra for work. The migration was one time migration and majority of those people are back in Maharashtra for work and livelihood.

@@nitish7218 Couple of points - (1) To be honest Indian democracy is not exactly considered a model by most of the world. Pakistanis are taught to believe that India is poorer, more violent and generally worse off than them - when Dawn publishes an article on Gurgaon this is the representative picture they use -www.dawn.com/news/1251891/ - they don't show the skyscrapers and metro trains. However, despite the myriad issues with Indian democracy - I suspect Pakistan will need to go through a phase similar to what India is right now before becoming like Korea or Taiwan or Japan.
      (2) I think this narrative game was always going on - but we were only fed one story and took that to be the truth. Now that we are online we can easily see how disgustingly people spin self serving narratives without considering fact or morality. After experiencing the Indian left narrative, the Indian right narrative, the Pakistani narrative, the Al Jazeera narrative and the American left narrative - I am becoming deeply suspicious of any kind of reporting on my country.

What a enlightened conversation without any top of the lung shouting game coming from Pakistani diaspora (no offense). Living in US for last 30 years with urge to listen and attend seminars mostly around science and related topics. Being Kashmiri Pandit I do understand Pakistani psyche (particularly Punjabi) more than any one in India , I was introduced to Pakistani society talk shows by friend couple of years back, and what disappointment with level and quality of content and delivery, at times, in fact most of times hilarious and far from the fact, I feel so refreshing to listen to both of you.

Uzair was on point about the dynamics between India and Pakistan, It is often dubbed as the D-D-D dogma, Disruption-Discussion-Disruption. It is in the interests of a specific class/organisation of pakistan, that India is continued to be perceived as a mortal threat to pakistan, which justifies their existence, and the amount of privileges they enjoy. Maybe with the escalation of the Afghan issues now, the army would realise they have another issue to justify their overprivileged existence and want to toe a more submissive line on India.

I admire the knowledge and understanding of Shehzad. I am impressed with his expression and the way he listens in many interviews.
I have a question for all the Muslims particularly from Pakistan.
You do not question yourself or do an introspection.
Barbarians came to India occupied the land, converted large local population to a very selfish and shallow religion. Don’t you think you people should lead a movement to correct the injustices committed by apologising to Hindus in a manner very similar to what Willy Brandt did in Germany.
I think that one move would make both countries win. A win win for both.

Also I have seen now India is trying to engage pakistan on talks ..and that's basically because to cool this issue...also what do you think the future ahead is??

Well as a Pakistani I would love to see Pakistan as a true democracy but I don't think that having a weak army won't be extremely hurtful to the country.

really love your discussion. One more correction - what is almost always lost with hindsight is - how hard it was for Indian govt to make the reforms in 1990s - the party itself was running ads against its own govt & against GATT (that was WTO agreement) and actually the govt lost power. But thankfully there were actual leaders in politics and enough educated electorate to carry fwd on course. Now why cant this happen in Pak - because it does not have credible leaders - and why does not have those leaders - because the electoral society is skewed - they are forced to view everything they have from a religion lence, which makes it vulnerable to lies and lazy in facing facts - which again comes to the folly in the founding of the country. There are no contradictions in life.

At 1.34 mark he says that Arabs started the numerical system from India and led it's adoption, this is not entirely correct. undivided India was trading with Java Sumatra, China both by sea and by land via high passes in the Himalayas. All these would have been impossible with a proper numeric understanding. Not to mention the pre islamic Mesopotamia, Iran and Iraq.

US captilist perisonment sucks, and I differ from the guest on Indian middle class. Yes its is not that big as china but its is still around 40-50 crore and yes lower middle class still a big task for our country.
Didn't know Pakistan has such progressive people who are thinking for future. Pakistan can't develop without India or India cannot develop faster without Pakistan.

there is really no ground hatred towards Pakistan, its not a narrative situation, it is more of a frustration with all the lack of progress, Uzair is contradicting himself, at one place he is saying Modi controls the narrative, then he says spoilers will move the peace process back to 0.. And btw, Arnab's biggest investor is a BJP MP, so Arnab will say what essentially BJP's narrative is!
