One thing about the "gold digger" story that didn't come up: Jill apparently grew up poor and her family relied on food banks -- so OF COURSE she likes to take her friends out for nice meals now that she has disposable wealth! I cannot imagine how satisfying and comforting it must be for her to be able to do that for people she loves, and OP just threw it back in her face. I wouldn't buy her entrees anymore either!

It’s probably also why she chose to set the standard for herself to be with a man who would allow her to live comfortably and, hopefully imho, luxuriously. The generous, hot, flexible woman had standards and her “friend” is a hater…
As a person whose best guy friend growing up was super poor and his mom had a ton mental illness so she was always job hopping keeping them continuously poor, I often had him come over to my house for sleepovers and my parents would treat us to take out or wed go to the movies or go on vacations or whatever. My parents treated him like he was part of the family and had no issue paying for another kid when spending time with him made us both incredibly happy. He eventually went to college for basically free and got a great job at verizon and I'll never forget him buying me something for my birthday one year and it was a really nice egyptian scarab beetle wood carving with hieroglyphics carved on the bottom. When we were in high school and middle school he'd make me homemade gifts which were beautiful and I i remember one of our mutual friends letting slip he'd asked the art teacher for a bit of clay to make me a necklace or thread to make me a bracelet and the amount of though my friend put into things that meant so much more than had he bought me something at a store. Anyway, he was SO proud after all the years of being friends to take the bill from the table when we went out to lunch with a smirk and say "i got this". He then met a guy from a decently well off family while in college and he changed a lot personality wise after that so we drifted apart as friends (and his bf then husband didn't like how close we were) and they moved far away, but bottom line, you should be happy when your friends are happy and successful, not bitter and envious.
That's so real. Everyone I know who grew up poor like me constantly talked about wanting money to be able to take care of people they loved. When you know what it feels like to be hungry, you don't want that for other people. It's so genuinely soothing for the soul to be able to tell someone you've got them.
Agreed! Also, she said "financially stable" not "rich". Being financially stable means a person makes smart decisions with money & doesn't need to rely on social services like she grew up doing. Nothing wrong with that!

I'm almost 27 and still live with my parents. I have major physical health issues as well as depression and anxiety. I don't know that there will ever be a time I live alone, just with a partner or roommate because it wouldn't be safe for me. I'm gray-asexual so it's harder for me to be attracted to people and my health issues keep me from even leaving the bed somedays so that is part of why I'm still with my parents.

The allergy one is so weird to me. My gf has a lavender allergy, and when I moved in, the first night I went to put on my sleep cream, only to realise it had lavender. Immediately washed my face and hands, and chucked out the cream immediately. Never even occurred to me to keep using it.

The idea of calling an asexual female friend daddy is hilarious. People who have a problem with that when they’re new to the group and only there because they’re a romantic partner have no right to judge or control that.

The dude with the stepdaughter clearly has a respectful and affectionate relationship with his gfs daughter. Hes respected the boundaries of their relationship and developed one where they are both comfortable. He even had a room set up for her at his house, like not a guest room, and actual room for her.
Step-parents dont have to have nor should they automatically assume entitlement to a parental relationship. Sometimes its best for them to have just a respectful, loving adult figure relationship.

and although it is wrong in some cases, "you should be an actual parent to your stepchild" certainly isnt the worst hill to die on as far as bad takes we've seen the guests/cast in smosh reddit videos have relating to the reddit stories
Zach’s rant about the allergies killed me. I got super sick from sharing a space with someone who kept using something I was allergic too. It’s not a joke.
Honestly same, I have a significant food intolerance and my ex, who lived with his parents, insisted on not making a fuss to his family and just eating the food anyway. I was also 19 to their 24 when we started dating and that absolutely can cause a power imbalance which I got vibes of from the story

I constantly have to remind people I'm allergic to any flowery scent(also cologne whatever makes it smell the way it does), so no lotions or perfumes or anything of the sort can be used right next to me. The amount of times I've left a room or something so I don't have an allergic reaction because people always forget I'm around....

The murder house story, they really tried vilifying that guy for his relationship with his future SD. He met her when she was 10, her biological father died. Trying to become a father figure with a child that old as opposed to just a trusted adult in her life would bea lot creeper. To her she had a dad. He's just gone. Stepdad just being 'like an uncle" is respecting the memory of her deceased father.
I think there's a middle ground though between forcing a new father relationship and an uncle relationship that is that trusted adult. The middle ground between replacing her dead dad and a fun family member that has no authority is an adult with the ability to guide, teach and impose rules in a team with her mum. I think that was what Zach's reaction was from, the idea of "a fun uncle" that doesn't treat the role of step-dad as it's own unique position

I agree. In other reddit episodes the very same approach worked well and got praise. I think we should not judge what works for them. You can never replace a lost father.
@@xLostInFirex I know many people that have extended family that they are incredibly close with but if they are, they describe their relationship as being "like father and son" for example. Different relationships just automatically have different persceptions associated with them, and are described as such so people understand easier. So if they did mean that then OP did not do a good enough job explaining it

I think pretty much every step-parent/step-child relationship should stay in "uncle" or "aunt" territory for as long both parties feel comfortable with before going into an actual direct parental relationship. Every story about a step-parent that tries to assert a full-on parental role is always a dumpster fire of a situation. Zach is 100% wrong here.
Yeah his reaction was strange to me, he must have an issue like this from his past haha. He gave her a special room and she cried, he's not like saying she's a random, he's trying to be respectful by not imposing but still showing he cares very much.

Yeah Zach has zero idea what modern families are like. Considering a teenager that you’ve known for a couple years as a daughter is not expected and would honestly be weird if I’m being honest. And as the child she has agency with how she wants the relationship to move forward. Maybe she doesn’t want a father-daughter relationship. Zach thinks he’s super woke but he’s blind to the realities of life a lot of the time.
I honestly completely disagree here. Uncles and Aunts have 0 say on how a child should be raised and they don’t owe her as much. There isn’t a social pressure for an uncle to help a kid through college, or pick up the kid from school, or offer advice or love. When you add a mother to your family, you add her children, too. People mistake punishment and discipline for parenting much too often. Sometimes parenting is offering guidance or picking your step daughter up from a sleepover gone wrong.
@@coolbri2001some people would rather not rush a parental relationship just because they’re dating a parent because the dating relationship may not work out, and that makes the split more damaging for everyone. Now that child has lost another parent, even if that adult makes a point to stay in that child’s life after the break up.
I have 4 living father figures “in” my life, and that gave me a lot of issues that I had to work through.

Yeah absolutely. I love my stepdad, he’s family, but he is NOT my father. He wants to be a father figure and my mother has even insinuated that i should see him that way because it makes him sad that i dont. Now, my stepmom does feel like a motherly figure to me, and i dont know why it's different but it is. when she told me that, i wanted to run as i felt so uncomfortable. I was around the same age as the girl when i met both my stepdad and stepmom. My parents are ok, i just cant see him that way.
He should care about her like a stepfather would. Saying he is more like an uncle is like saying he wants to sleep with the mom but doesn’t care enough to put any effort into caring about her daughter. Stepparents don’t need to be second moms and dads, they just need to be a trusted authority figure in the home bc at the end of the day they are the adults. If a parent/child-like relationship forms organically then great but it’s not necessary to be a good stepparent.

Not that there's anything wrong with living with your parents in your 20's, I know it's rough out there, but it does make the age gap funnier to me.
Not just that, but anyone in a relationship who goes to their "yes man" friends to back them up when they have the slightest disagreement is someone you just shouldn't be in a relationship with, ESPECIALLY when they're clearly siding with their friend regardless of the situation like in this story. As someone who had a baby roughly a year ago, I think the woman who responded so strongly to hearing the Gigi wasn't a girl name in Italy probably had some whacky hormone stuff going on. Her baby was a newborn and the things that could set me off when my baby was a newborn was wild.

After seeing some especially wild Reddit comments and getting curious enough to look at the posters' profiles, I now understand why Reddit users have a bad reputation. Lots of very strong opinions on the opposite sex from people with a post history like "I'm 30 and I've never been in a relationship, how do I get a date."

Zach is so wrong for his step daughter take. No. She does not have to be his daughter, she isn't his daughter. It's up to them to determine the relationship, especially if she lost her bio dad she has happy memories she doesn't want to replace that.
Yeah, I agree with you and I think that if you think about the story itself it shows that he does care about her and wants to treat her well. He made a special room for her and he's trying to get feedback on what to do in this situation since he knows his partner is already overwhelmed.
I said this on a different comment, but I think Zach read the OP as the kind of person who marries into a family without taking seriously that if they're marrying someone with a kid then they're going to be responsible for the wellbeing of a kid as well as setting a good example for them. e.g. Someone who would be like, "Why are you expecting me to take care of her, or do the bare minimum to help with her, or stop undermining your authority, or reassess any of my attitudes or behaviors that aren't appropriate for a kid to be exposed to? I'm not her dad." I don't think that was the case in this situation and Zach definitely jumped to that conclusion prematurely here, but I think that is a valid concern in general, and it did sound like he pulled back a bit when Shayne pointed out that not stepping into a father role per se may be a conversation he and his partner have had.
I think his reaction was mainly from the "I'm more of a fun uncle" which IMO implies a lack of responsibility. I agree he's not her dad but he is her step-dad which is it's own thing, not uncle nor dad which can be a hard middle ground to find

I dated someone with a severe allergy to mint. One of my favorite things. It was sucky to have to let go of something I liked but I also didn’t want him to die. So it was a no brainer. We found compromises- I could get mint ice cream on special occasions and stuff like that. That was enough. I have allergies myself and have to be careful. It’s about respect. You find a work around.

I'm also allergic to mint! Not severe, but I do get heaches, nausea, vomiting, etc. I'm also asthmatic so my husband, a weed smoker, ONLY smokes in the garage and changes his shirt immediately. He knows it's just to help me, and that's what a relationship is. Just as I changed my laundry detergent and whatnot for him. It's simple.
@@whereamihelpme Children's toothpaste might've been hard to work around, but there are definite options that are fairly odorless. Charcoal based and stuff like Paradontax, as long as your mouth is nice and healthy(which it should be as long as you're brushing and flossing.) I have found that nothing seems to wash out coffee smell in my experience.
Dude if my girlfriend said my body wash was causing her to breakout in hives I would change it so fast. What a weird reaction to something that’s so easy to change. Even if you were checked out of the relationship… you’re still causing someone else to break out in hives
She probably wanted to break up and wasn’t able to rationalize it, so the body wash was the only option. That or she is a huge pushover and her friends were pushing her to break up with him.

There also could be context like maybe he was pressuring her to move out and that might be where the controlling comment comes from. Just a speculation

Italian story it turns out the OP wasn't even an Italian and was lying. Reddit did a a dive into her account history and found her all account. She claimed to be German, Australian. Spanish, Egyptian and much more.
Which tracks as far as reddit is concerned. That said, she also isn't technically wrong in this case. Though I'm only speaking more from what I know of the close friend I have who is Italian and his family. Gigi is a nickname I have heard more often for "Gina" which is a girls name. So I thought it strange when OP mentioned it was a boys nickname. But, I also heard Gina is a modern take on Luigina. And that Gigi as a nickname can be unisex. I dont think Zach understood what the step father meant by "more like an uncle". He means he cares for her, and wants to be a trust worthy guardian. He doesn't want to replace the image of the step daughter's dad. Especially a teenager wouldn't want that to happen to them.
I was quite young when my mother started a long term relationship and even at 8 or so I was determined that this guy was NOT my dad and would never call him anything other than his first name.
To be fair, my situation is probably pretty different because my parents were divorced rather than widowed and my mom’s bf was a creep, but I think it’s common for kids to not want their parents new partners to try to parent them.

I can imagine that I wouldn’t want it in a way where immediately the person start acting like a parent. Parent-child type relationships is not something that just develops, it takes time, effort and love. So having a more causal relationship before that is so important. The controller is pretty weird, but it never stopped my friends and me. Some of my friends owned a ps2, ps3, xbox 360, yet my N64 remained popular. I can imagine PS1 is easier to get into now, as the controller hasn’t really changed over time. The best games on the N64 are still pretty great, albeit graphically old. The controller is holding the N64 back, especially because most original controllers have nearly useless joysticks now, but I recently got a Brawler64 controller and it’s a lot more intuitive. No more weird third leg to worry about.

I have older half siblings and their dad passed when they were old enough to remember him as their father, so my dad was always an additional parent for them but not “dad.” They’ve always called him by his first name and even after our mom died, he’s still in their lives because of the additional parent thing. He’s still grandpa to their kids. I honestly think it’s super normal
If I ever have kids, they’ll absolutely be adopted, aiming between the ages of 5-16 (when chances of adoption absolutely plummet). I wouldn’t ever expect my potential kid(s)/adoptee(s) to view me as a parent, whether it’s 3 years down the line or 20 years down the line. Of course it would be great if I became a parental figure to them, but at the end of the day I would be just fine with being seen as a safe place to land when life gets tough - a resource for them to utilize if they need it.

The jokes about “translating” Italian were hilarious but also reminded me of when I was a teenager and there was a fire at my grandparents’ house while I was visiting. I called 911 and when the fire department showed up, I was trying to “translate” what the fireman was asking to my Italian grandmother. But I at the time I didn’t speak much Italian, so I just repeated everything the fireman was asking, in English but slightly slower. I still think about that and laugh 😂 To be fair, I was also kinda stressed out at the time given the active fire that was occurring and wasn’t thinking lol.

As someone who has accidentally run into a murder house (and other morbid death houses) just because they like taking long walks in their neighborhood, I can confirm that elderly neighbors are foaming at the mouth to gossip with anybody walking by these places.
As an adult I like getting these stories from them personally, but I would be furious if a stranger was out telling these gruesome stories about my house to my kids just for shock value.

Having a step parent or a boyfriend of a mom is such a tricky subject and it difficult to judge the dynamic of the adult and child of you don’t have all the information. My stepdad was the best man I could ever ask for, but due to respect for my dad he kept our relationship more like friends and not a parent. He still made sure I was comfortable, happy, fed, washed clothes, etc, but left discipline and parenting decisions to my mom.
The Daddy story made me think about how my nickname has always been "Mom". It started when I was younger in school, I was always known as "the mom friend" because I always had everything someone would need in my bag, and I was the one who gave good advice. We're in our mid twenties now, and my friends will call me when they're sad and my response is normally something like, "Come over, I'm making pesto tonight and we can watch movies". I always took care of those I cared about, and so people have always called me mom. And those who have called me Mom for the last decade now call my boyfriend of 5 years "Dad" not only because he's dating Mom, but also because he acts like their dad. He's the person they call to ask car questions to, he's the one they call when their sink is leaking, and he's the one they run they're boyfriends through to get "boyfriend material" approval from along with me. We have accepted our given roles as mom and dad.❤

As someone who lost their dad and who’s mom is currently engaged, as much as I love my moms fiancé, he understands that he is not my dad and our relationship is healthiest with that boundary. That being said, I don’t think it’s weird that the step dad isn’t necessarily a parental figure to kim, it may be a boundary that she has placed as well.

For the Gigi/Luigi story, I’m Native American (Seneca specifically). Gigi in our language would be spelled Ji’ji’ (pronunciation is very close with a glottal stop between the syllables), which means evil spirits. So even on US soil the name can have a bad connotation. I also have a white great grandmother who goes by Gigi, we’ve told her the double meaning and she just laughed. There’s thousands of languages in the world and we give the words power. No point dwelling on connotations that have no bearing over your everyday life.

Sometimes words means different things in different languages. The french word for seal is pronounced "fuck". The fact that the word pronounced like that is a swear word in English doesn't mean that the French have to change their word for seal. It's one thing to tell your grandmother that her name has a different meaning, but another to tell a new mom that she sealed up by naming her daughter something

I 100% agree with Zach on the allergy/body wash story. I have a LOT of mild allergies, really sensitive skin, and I break out in hives/rashes when I get sweaty or in hot showers. I HAVE to use sensitive skin detergent or I itch. I have to use sensitive skin body wash or I break out in hives and itch. If I use soap that is too fragranced, I itch and it can dry out my skin VERY easily. I have to take daily allergy medications and boosters. If someone who supposedly wanted a relationship with me refused to compromise on my allergies (like saying they are going to get a cat for us even though I’m allergic), the relationship would be over then and there. I don’t care if my allergic reactions aren’t deadly, they are unhealthy and they HURT. Also, allergic reactions CAN change. My allergies could become life-threatening without warning. The point is: Don’t mess with allergies and sensitivities!

I reckon the background of each person would heavily influence how they read into that. Maybe Zach has a step parent he's close to, or who really stepped up for him? I definitely heavily objected to anyone trying to replace my dad after he developed dementia, but I know it can be a spectrum for others. Name story: I’m Italian and Luigia is also an option in our country even if not used today, I guess. Plenty of names that are used in Italy and are usually masculine names, like Luca or Andrea, are used in other countries for girls… I think OP was just a bit closed minded or just old school like most Italians.
What’s crazy about allergies is it can present itself as non life threatening for years when you come in contact with it and then one day you can go into anaphylactic shock when you come into contact with it. It’s too unpredictable to take unnecessary risks

Very true. About a year ago we learned that my brother was allergic to peanuts, yet he had been eating them his whole life. His favorite candy was Reeses. But when he started having minor health problems, and we figured out he was allergic, we stopped letting him eat peanut butter right away. The doctor said if he had continued to eat it, he probably would have had to have been hospitalized within the next couple months cuz his body wouldn't have been able to handle it. And since it's been so long since he last ate peanut butter, if he eats it now he may have a serious allergic reaction that could be life threatening, even tho he had gone 90% of his life eating it
just a heads up for zach about story 5, just because they agree in not having a father-daughter relationship doesnt make them assholes. maybe she doesnt want someone to replace her dad but having an uncle figure is enough for her, and him not pushing himself as a dad is great because they have boundaries and can still love eachother.

This. In my last relationship i had conversations with my ex about what kind of relationship she thought I should develop with the kids. They still had their dad's in their lives and I was never trying to replace them. Did I love them and see them as my son's? Yes, but never would I call them my son's to them or in front of them nor would I push any sort of paternal relationship because that's not my place in their life. I will say, I regret getting emotionally invested in their happiness and growth and their lives because even though I was ready to leave my abusive ex I was nowhere near ready to leave children I'd sort of emotionally adopted as my own and I still find myself praying for their health and safety and happiness often. I miss my sons, and I say this to point out, someone else's relationship with their step children is really nobody else's business to decide, outside of the obvious "dont traumatize or abuse them"
Yes! As someone who got a "stepfather" when I was like 14 I did not want another father figure after my dad passed so I call my step-dad by his first name and we are both comfortable with that
Yes i was thinking the same thing! The post even mentioned the biological father passing away so it wouldn't shock me if this is the preferred dynamic in the family. I had an absent father myself and when my mother got into a new relationship (i was ten) it took us almost 7 years to truly get along BECAUSE he was insistant initially to be a father to me wich i really did not want (there waa some other stuff but this was a BIG factor why it took so long). Some children just don't want a replacement and it seemed clear to me in the way he spoke about the daughter that he does care just doesn't view himself as her dad. As someone who has dated and experienced many forms of major narcissism, i do know people who have said they're allergic to things for control cause they would consume it when they had no other options, and i realized the red flag, so that could happen, but people who have had normal experiences wouldn't immediately think that especially if he is having a visible reaction, so she's probably a narcissist tbh. She's just completely jealous. The writer doesn't give a single example of the rich friend "flaunting her money." She treated her friends to dinner (sharing her money) and she talked about her birthday trip (sharing about her life). The writer also didn't say a single thing about the husband other than that he is rich, which means that is all that the WRITER pays attention to. As a couple they already had one thing in common (yoga) so there is no grounding in her claim that her friend is gold digging, she just happened to want someone with money, but she didn't even have a string of shitty rich partners just to use their money. The rich friend seems to have held out for an actual partner who is also rich. If anyone is the gold digger its the writer -- she doesn't like her friend at all, but is clearly hanging on for the benefits of having a rich friend!

As an Italian, I can confirm the Gigi/Luigi thing is true, and also that the law mentioned is true. Like we have a law that even prohibits us to use names from famous fictional characters, so you can't name your son Goku for example.

I actually respect the hell outta Spencer for his takes on those older games. Too many people are afraid to admit that sometimes things in the past just don’t hold up nowadays, because people who do really love those games can get really aggressive when defending them. What gets me about that first story is that she mentions her friend grew up poor and that was looking for financial stability in a relationship, but then calls her a gold digger. Did it never occur to her that she didn't want any future children she had to go through what she went through growing up? Maybe she's not a gold digger but didn't want to continue dealing with financial hardship all her life? That's not a crazy thing to wish for.
i think gold digger is such a dumb insult too. like if someone wants to marry another person for their money, why do other people get so pressed? people get married for all sorts of reasons that aren’t just love.

But if someone actually cares about someone, but also likes how they can provide for them, I don't feel like that's a gold digger.
Along with that there is also absolutely no reason to talk down to someone that wants to marry someone with a good income. I’m sorry Sharon, I want to live comfortably and not struggle to make ends meet. I know it’s not possible for everyone, but the fact is financial stability for yourself is a win - even if you don’t have kids or a partner.
I disagree with Zach’s take, mainly cause it seemed like he read a lot into the story that wasn’t apparent. Not every kid especially at 16 is willing to take their parent’s significant other as a parental figure and no indication in the story that she wanted that. That can change with time but I can 100% see a scenario of the OP not being in the wrong on the basis that he has more of an “uncle” role in her life. If anything it can be respectful of the child’s wishes if they have significant feelings about someone trying to adopt a similar role their deceased or divorced parent had.

Shayne talking about home habits can make or break a relationship reminded me of my mum telling me that my brother said he couldn’t date with someone as messy as me.
