*Used this rod recently on a river hike in NH. It performed beautifully **enjoyable.fishing** recommend as I had hoped it would, on a whole heap of river smallies using tiny torpedoes and tubes.*
my top 3 are the met, bantam, and curado k. met is so versatile and bombs light baits, bantam is so solid for pitching and flipping, curado is just a super good value workhorse
Great info Nick. 💯 agree on the sleeper SLX DC. Crazy how even on the “budget line” per-say they’re so smooth and good. Could you do a similar run through with the Diawas? 🎣❤️
Wow Nick I totally agree that the SLX DC is better than the Curado DC. I thought it was just me noticing that. I really would like to sell my Curado DC and get another SLX DC. Great video
Thanks for the video. I have several chronarchs and love them. Was thinking about getting a Metanium MGL. When I fish my baitcasters I want to palm the reel and have my index finger hooked under the front of the reel and grasp the reel with it. Chronarch is great for that. My son has a Curado and you can’t fish it that way due to the line guide mechanisms moving back and forth. My question on the Metanium is can you palm it and grab under the front with index finger without getting into the line guide mechanism. I have been trying to tell from pics but it is difficult. Thanks
Love all the marsh redfish, but I would love to see a collaboration with MDLR, where you two spend about a week or two hunting trophy speckled trout, maybe down south in Baffin or further south in the Land Cut or Port Mansfield. Mission 30+"!
The one problem with the metanium DC is how fast it goes geary. The main shaft is susceptible to flexing cause in’s there gears to feel buzzy and noisy over time. The reason is Shimano thought it was a good idea to mill out part of the mainshaft. Also the micro module gears do not really work with aluminum because ,although harder than brass, it wears worse than brass on a micro level scale(larger chunks chip off compared to brass) unfortunately. Coupled with a beefed up drag than what 2013 metanium had you have a bit of problem. I have new metanium and I have already had several problems with it because the bearings for the reel are trash. I’m pretty sure why mgl reels are now saltwater ready is because the milling on the side of the spool, so saltwater gets everywhere in the reel.
Latest model Metanium? Mine's killing it in saltwater and its overall the best casting baitcaster I've ever used. No issues at all with the bearings. Quite the opposite.
The spools are 50 % heavier in Shimano's dc reels and it just kills their light lure performance. I work in a tackle store and have had to refund 2 curados because of this. I've got a 15 year old Calcutta DC and it's awesome but the modern 4 position DC system is rubbish, I'm afraid to say. 21 gram spools. Not good. Way too much inertia .
Please respond though I'm down here in Copano Bay area, and all I have is my 2020 Shimano Metanium MGL, I've read to not use these in saltwater (read for r hours last night before fishing it) Ironically I just bought the Metanium, but I think now I shoulda got the Bantam since it is saltwater fine :/
I'd like to see you go to Los Buzos in Cambutal, Panana and kayak fish with Robert Field and see how those reels do with those big roosters and cambera snappers.
My metanium DC HG is still NIB. Had one of my 2012 Shimano 200DCs stolen yesterday. Is this basically going to be the new and improve version of what I have with the old 200DCs?
Just got back into fishing got a old chronarch bpv super minty im about to use and abuse those reels are tanks a little heavy but its a work horse reel and I use a little scorpion 1000 xt the jdm 50e for wading
Not gonna lie I found the Scorpion 1000XT on ebay recently and it seems to be an amazing reel.. What are your thoughts on it? Isn't it better than the greenie reels we used to have?
They're awesome! And versatile for weedless applications. I'd give em a whirl. Was pessimistic at first but once I saw how these hooks deliver, I haven't looked back.
You should try the shimano engetsu 100hg, curado 70 body, updated brakes, power handle, clicking drag pull, small spool with finesse capability, i use spooled mine with 10lb yozuri braid for inshore reds and trout. Bombs 1/4 jigheads
I'd like to see you review the new SLX BFS, basically the Scorpion I've been told but slightly different. Picked mine up for $145 on digitaka website. Do you recommend magnesium reels for saltwater or do they corrode too quickly?
I've heard starting out with 30lb and practice; go lighter when you get the hang of it. The idea is that the higher the pound test it won't birdnest as easy.
I fish about 2 days a week in Matagorda Bay with three Shimano Citica's that I bought used for $50/ea. I have 7:1, 6.3:1 and 5:1. I keep 30 lb braid on two of them and 14 lb mono on the other one. I cast straight into the wind with them with no problem. Other than replacing an occasional anti-reverse gear, I have had no issues. I've caught 28" trout, oversized reds and 25 pound drum with them. I can't imagine paying $400 for something that my $50 reels do flawlessly. They don't cover ultra-light which is not an issue for me. I think they only cost about $125 new. Then again, I fish out of a 2013 Hobie Revolution that I paid $450 for, which is less than the Shimano Anteres. To each his own, I guess.
I was going to purchase the Antares off of an online website, but they said it wasn’t recommended for saltwater applications? Also, would you go Metanium or Antares if the price wasn’t a factor?
That’s a tough question. Antares is the flagship and it is smoother vs the metanium. Both have have magnesium parts to it so you would need to properly maintain it after saltwater use. If money wasn’t a factor than I would go Antares. I recommend buying from Digitaka. Let them know I sent you by sending a note at check out. 👍
Nice! I think you gonna really love it. The only three things I do to my Antares... 1. Wipe it down with a damp cotton towel after use. 2. Once a month simple oil 3. Don’t dunk the reel! Follows these three things and she’s gonna run like new for a long time.
New sub here. I enjoy your content. Can you do a Daiwa platform next or just a really "solid" salt water casting reel. We're fishing here in SF Bay and would like your input on some solid reels. FYI I'm still rocking JDM Zillion 1516 HSL. Price point is not an issue. Cheers!
@@RXAngler I was deciding between the new met and the bantam for saltwater... I've heard they were about the same in performance minus the weight differences. Why do you think the bantam is worse?
Man all these reals has nothing to do with real salt water fishing , this are the nice reals you have or you like ( good title for your vid ) , where is the Tranx , Garppler … etc , the reals Shimano inshore / offshore salt water baitcasters ..
If you go to shimano japan website, most of its BC are saltready. I dunno why rest of the world doesn't get "saltwater ok" info in descripton. Almost all their BC have sealed corosion resistant bearing, brass/aluminium gears and aluminium body. You have to be careful with magnesium body, as if its sealing is scratched it will corode fast. Rest will be covered with standart maitenance.
OK thought never find someone who used the word Beast more than I well I stand corrected and thanks for giving your brother or brother in law the uglier of the Shimano reels,,lots of love there, ok cool reviews, now RUN TO JESUS

I think you will be happy with that choice.
You always got good info on the products you use good vid

I have the chronarch g and i love this reel its smooth and cast far...holding up really good ...so i got a 2nd chronarch reel...👍🏼👍🏼

I’ve been eyeying the shimano Bay Game 18... would love to see a review on that one
I’ll definitely look into that model. I’m always looking at different models. Thanks for the tip.
curado and chronarch best value! used
Wow Nick I totally agree that the SLX DC is better than the Curado DC. I thought it was just me noticing that. I really would like to sell my Curado DC and get another SLX DC. Great video
love the voiceover on longevity @1:31
Check out the JDM slx. It's more of a satin semi gloss vs the matte.
Thank you Nick. Great vid.

who would you advise using to have them maintenance your bait casters?
What about a good baitcaster for surf casting on a 10' surf rod
Have you ever used the shimano chronarch g? If so, what do you think about it? It’s actually rated for saltwater fishing.
I fish with a 150G constantly. Great reel.
I love my SLX DC!
No doubt an awesome reel

The JDM SLX DC is all black without the blue artwork on the side and has a better DC computer program in my opinion.
I need to look into that model.
Thanks for this. Quick question, ever used the zman finesse bulletz? Any opinion on them would be appreciated!
Never used them.

What lb test braid are you currently using on your metanium 2020?
Is the metanium dc still the #1 reel you recommend for saltwater kayak fishing? Thank you Nick see you out there some day slacker
I would go for the 20 Shimano Metanium
DO A DAIWA VERSION NEXT!
definitely
I love my 2020 Met and my Calcutta conquest DC 101hg. I was lucky enough to only pay $70 total for both reels. Awesome video.

Daiwa review would be nice. Then compare shimano bait caster to daiwa and which one you like out of the two.
I’ve only purchased one Diawa and it seized up after limited salt water use. Im baffled by this as I take good care of my reels.
He’s definitely more of a shimano guy

Hey Nic, what about the alderbaran bfs, you like the scorpion better? I was thinking about getting the alderbaran to go with the ul suppressor rod
I haven’t had a good experience with the aldebaren.
