I was a teacher's aide for a kindergarten class and right before Christmas, the teacher showed this movie and while the kids were distracted I went and put big jingle bells on a ribbon in all of their coat pockets. So I read a fan theory about how the boy actually fell asleep to his dad reading him a bedtime story. Hanks is actually voicing like 5-6 characters in this movie, maybe more which makes sense as dads read in different voices for different characters. The train is the choice of whether he believes or not. Goes more into detail but it makes a lot sense this way!

Write What You Know: The main protagonist (also named after the author, Chris) is from Grand Rapids, Michigan, also the hometown of the book's author. In one scene, the train passes by Herpolsheimer's, which was (until the 1980s) a Grand Rapids department store that was known for its lavish Christmas displays.
-Not only that, but the author recalls playing on the real Pere Marquette 1225 as a child. (At the time it wasn't operational, so it was brought out at football games for that purpose)
-Also the entire story was Based on a Dream of a magical train one Christmas Eve when he was in-story Chris's age (around 9 or 10).

My library at my elementary school used to decorate a room like the polar express, and our librarian would dress up as the conductor. This commentary was wonderful and hilarious! A couple of things:
    1) The illustrator/author of the original (amazing) book is Chris Van Allsburg. He is all-around awesome. He is also a Rhode Island School of Design alumnus and that is why Santa’s North Pole city looks a lot like an industrial New England city. One of the things I like about this movie is how they kept that detail.
    2) The reason this movie looks… Like This… is because it was from that weird era of “Oh motion-capture is going to change animation forever!” I’m very glad that they since realized that mo-cap looks very off-putting unless you have an actual human animator go in and revise it later, like mo-cap is the “sketch”.
    3) A friend of mine called this “Snowpiercer for Kids” and another friend called it “Bioshock: Christmas Edition”. I can’t argue with either. 🤣

The design of the steam locomotive in the movie is actually based off of a real-life steam locomotive, the Pere Marquette 1225! But it has a different whistle than the one in the movie. Here are some hints:
    - The serial number 1225 is actually a nod to 12/25, or Christmas Day!
    - And the train whistle you hear in the movie is a nod to the same train whistle heard in another Robert Zemeckis movie, Back to the Future Part 3!

There’s an explanation for why you found the animation creepy! Animators call it the “uncanny valley”. It’s when the animation _tries_ to look exactly like reality, but it doesn’t quite look real, and so the brain is tripped out like “it doesn’t look like a cartoon and it doesn’t look like a real thing, so what the fuck is it?!” 😂

And they gave me a silver bell that matched the one in this movie and added a snowman top to it. This movie was everything to me.

I like your glasses and my husband would LOVEEE your shirt (he's obsessed with Nightmare Before Christmas)! "I am standing right in front of you, why are you yelling?" FACTSSSS hahahaha. You're right, Tom Hanks voiced Woody and he also voices the conductor (and they used his likeness for the conductor's appearance!) Yes, TIM Allen voiced Buzz lol. BABY THOMAS JEFFERSON, I CACKLED. Fun fact for this movie, Tom Hanks actually voices the main boy, the main boy's Dad, the conductor, the hobo, and Santa Claus! "Come through with the vocals, homeless boy" HAHAHAHAHA.

The plot is about innocence and faith in the young. On this point, little man in the blue robe is losing his faith, baby Barbara is all about Christmas faith, and little man in the back has never had much faith. Now, I have 4 children. My oldest is 20 and my youngest is 14. My two oldest children have told me that they believed in Santa until just a couple years ago. Belief and faith in the magic of Christmas is essential for every child.

I watched a video explaining the story of The Polar Express and a theory is the ending is to know if your child is old enough to not believe anymore. You can either believe through the bell and note that Santa is real and our main kid truly went on the Polar Express that night, or if youre old enough to not believe you could see the adventure as nothing more than a dream that the main kid had to convince himself to believe in Santa again. If you listen closely, the Conductor is the boy who grew up still believing while the hobo is him if he continued on his path of not believing.

I am considered a high functioning lucid dreamer. As someone who knows all the time that I am in a dream, I actually can’t die in a dream- fall off a 500 ft fall tower? -Just had the wind knocked out of me. Eaten by a dinosaur?-i materialize somewhere else. However, your fear itself could theoretically kill you I think. You can’t really drown in a dream unless you are simultaneously being smothered by your pillow in real life, but your subconscious could convince you that you are causing you to hyperventilate and then have problems in reality

Fun fact though, you know that startling sensation that feels as though you're falling that can happen when you're falling asleep?
