I really hope this helps someone! I used two processes of the One N' Only Colorfix Hair Color Remover to lift 14 years of black box dye. I was able to get brown hair at home without using bleach! This process did NOT damage my hair.

It got darker because you skipped step 3. The 3rd step oxidizes your hair to see if you got all the color molecules out. If it gets dark after step 3 its to inform to repeat step 1 and 2. You did not rinse all color out. By adding the color at the end the developer in your brown oxidized your original black molecules along with the new brown. As we all know brown is lighter than black so the black showed instead of brown. Over the next few days weeks the rest of your hair gradually got darker due to air oxidizing it slowly 🙃 hope this helps someone else in the future. Yes I am a licensed cosmetologist i know what I am talking about. Good luck ladies.
Hello I'm naturally dark brown hair but I have bleached my hair and went many diffrent colors. Around december I dyed my hair black using box dye I havent dyed my hair again since then. And underneath you can see the black fading because of the bleached hair I had underneath. Anyways any tips on how to remove this black hair dye ? To atleast a level where I can do some red color or some type of color?
I also always leave my roots I never bleach them and by now even though I cant see it they have grown in.

Always remember do your ends first then do your roots for better results!!! 💯 best advice to use !

I know this is an older video, but I'm just now researching how to transition my dark brunette (salon colored w/ occasional box color to extend time between appointments) to brown, to light brown to ultimately letting my grey grow in. So this was interesting. I wanted to share with you that I thought you did a great job! You were natural and communicated well, giving us good feedback on what you were doing and why you were doing it. Lighting and cameral angles were done well and editing was editing. Just enough background music without overwhelming the listener. Overall, a really good production. I especially love that you allowed us to see you with no make up. It made me feel like I was hanging out with a friend... which of course, makes me (the viewer) want to come back. ; ) And there were some very helpful comments left in the comment section, too! Keep up the good work.

This is the EXACT thing I am going through!! I have been looking for someone that explained your process EXACTLY. I am SO glad I found your video! I first died my hair black when my oldest son was 1, he will be 20 this year! My hair is really long & I just kept dying black because I felt stuck not wanting to spend a TON of money to change it. Now that I am getting older (I'm 43) my roots are coming in white. So I stopped dying it black 3 months ago and have been putting a darkish brown color on my roots just so it will blend better. But it still looks AWFUL. I don't want a dramatic change and I DO NOT want to bleach it. I just want to slowly lighten it some to brown so that it looks more natural and not has hard to keep up with, and eventually years down the road fade into my white maybe through SLOWLY highlighting it. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. You seem so down to earth and made me laugh too :)

Hey how are you? I’m not here to criticize at all just want to let you know few things.... when doing step one and 2 should of applied a virgin application, which is midshaft first (the most resistant) then roots, then ends. That way you might have gotten more of an even lift. The reason why your roots were lighter(we call it “hot roots”) is because your root area has the heat from your scalp so it processed more then the midshaft and ends. If you need to apply another colour on top to get rid of your “hot roots” (which is btw such a pet peeve of mine when clients so at home colour) do your roots only, let it process and last 5 min pull the colour through to ends. Glad your happy w the results though. ALOT cheaper than going to a salon I guess lol!

Wait 48 hrs after color remover then color it 2 shade lighter than the color you want then it will be that color

La Cristal Omgggg i got my hair red tho!!!! I gave it a bleach wash and then went over it abit more in just bleach on the areas less damaged that needed more light!! xx Then got a Live (brand) box dye in vibrant red and omgg it worked :) xx If u have extensions im sure u can try bleach washing x but yeah olaplex and serums will help u xx

If your hair is porus, why not put somthing a little acidic on your hair to close it up?
Like add in a little apple cidre vinegar to your conditioner?
It will work to close the lifting of the "shingles" of your hair

I am the same as you have been dying my hair box black dye for more than 20 years basically all my youth been black and never experienced any other colour. Recently I decided to go away from black and I ended up red ginger and this not going anywhere no matter how many times I used remover and bleach there is still that red pigment. So I put ash light brown over and still ended up having dark hair. It is so difficult to get out of black. Maybe that was the reason I never even tried before but now I have this burning desire to go to my natural hair and put a stop to all the chemicals.

Our hair seems to be the same!! Dark brown with red undertones....im sitting in my bathroom trying to fix hot roots from trying a medium chocolate brown with cool tones. Its actually Wella 5BC (fudge pop) .....EVERYTHING turns me red!! Any suggestions??? I have gray roots (since 17 years old 😭) but even when my mid shafts fade....they fade to an brown with red tones....uggggg I DONT want black (which is the only thing that will cover the gray and not turn red)....and I DONT want red either!!! I just want to be a nice medium brown and add in some baby lights!!!! Please send any of your trial and error suggestions!!!

hi i have a question, i am also trying to lift my black box hair dye (a years worth) and i want to dye my hair red after. once my hair turns back to brown, will i be able to dye my hair red? the red dye contains bleach
momo babie if you’re trying to lift black box dye hair, once you bleach it it will turn orange/brassy. (Like mine did after a years of box dying 🙈) if you plan to dye hair right after it will be absolutely fine because the bleached hair will be a red shade

Im intrigued at 51 seconds cuz u said u dyed urs for 14 years which matches my time anywhoo. Im ready for a change n ive been trying for 2 years to get it lightened n it worked with a salon but 200 bucks every 6 weeks got too steep for me at this time. I grew up learning things from my mom and stylists but my hair is very thick very healthy n im terrified of fucking it up. I do strand tests first. But i really hope this will work at least then i can get to brown n let my hair chill for a bit n then continue with lightening.

If you wash your hair with dawn dish soap it helps strip the colour 😊

Bottle number 3 let’s you know if you still have color in your hair so when you recolor it won’t go dark again if you still have color in your hair do it again you can use color remover up to 3 times

I swear on everything...we have the same exact hair color story...14 years of dying it black... attempted to go blonde two years ago... ended up just covering it up with black again... been growing it out for three months...just bought colorfix trying to go a brown color... same same same. 😂

I'm regretting having my hair stylist use a level 2 or 1 and the black was cute when she styled it but after I washed it and blow dried it myself, it is not good against my pale skin and I'm regretting my decisions... I finally grew our at least 80 percent t of my previous colored hair, I was black to NATURAL:(

Girl, I am so sorry I have been there. I put a hoodie on and hood over my head, went to the grocery store in tears with my momma and picked out a brown color to dye my hair again to make my roots match my ends. I waited a week and then tried to remove to dark unwanted color in my hair using non bleach options. They have so many options now! Colorfix worked best for me for lighting my hair but yes girl I’ve been where you are right now and it’s not fun.

You shouldve bleached it instead. I bleached mine to strip the black off with a superdrug bleach blonde then i went over with a reddish brown so it was visible

Your hair wasn’t porous. Your cuticle was open and your hair was dry. The chemicals in the hair stripper contain sulphur. It literally drank the color. I did a protein treatment and deep treatments for 2 weeks before dying it. I went with 2 shades lighter. More than that will leave your hair brassy or on the red side because obviously if you wanna be a level 4 and you use a 7 unless its an ash you wont tone as much you will need green to tone that red. Or you can do a flash tone. Look up toning with black hair dye (highly effective NOT recommended for novices)
Your hair reoxidized. Dont skip a step in the instructions just because you've seen other people on youtube do it like that. 🤦♀️
