@@bperez8656 developer, for starters. It's acidic, closer to hair's natural pH level, so it's not causing damage-the alkaline bleach/color is. So using the lowest strength of developer with a high developer-to-color ratio (like 1 part bleach to 3 parts developer). The lower the developer strength-whether mixed with bleach or high lift color-the slower/gentler the process 👍🏽

WHat if your hair was previously bleached and now you have different levels in your hair and you want to even everything out, but also go lighter than your root/ natural color?
@@ambiencemusic4858you will need to tone the highlights first if they are significantly lighter. If your base color is natural use a permanent or bleach. Lastly, globally tone hair with a glaze to even out tones.

Great explanation!!! I am a new WELLA Brand Educator and this video is clutch! Well done! Only thing I would tell you is that with WELLA, 40 volume developer actually only lifts 3 levels with color, 4-5 when using Special Blondes series. It’s sometimes confusing because most developers lift more, but with WELLA, their developers are a bit different.

Thank you for this video. I found this very helpful. Is it possible you can do a video with the exact color shades from Wella line for example: 6 Ash and the ounces needed + 6 Neutral and the ounces needed of that shade as well and the amount of ounces and level needed for the developer. I am still a rookie at this, and I realized the hard way, that if I don't get the right quantities I won't get the desired results. I have been trying to get the right shades to go from 6 to 8 without an orange/brass undertone. While simultaneously trying to cover 40% of grays.

I loved watching your teaching , but was obsessed with your glasses, I just ordered glasses and love those. Do you hilite naturally dark hair with a twelve and forty volume? I will do that or use a 10 with a 10-1 . People don’t get u don’t always need to bleach. My hair is getting harder to color and does not last as long. I guess my grey is getting hard to cover. Would you use an 8 if you used universal level lift instead of volume of lift? . According to the principles of the universal level of lift using a six would bring you to a true level of 4.5?.x thanks for sharing
I don’t use goldwell but you would just grab a swatch book or look up their color chart online, and find the colors with those pure pigments! Your goal is to find something with green and blue at a level 6 in the line you want to use!

I’m licensed . And am a natural level 4/5 . Followed this to get to a 7 cool / sandy tone on myself . I switched the green tones for blue because I was lifting to a 7 . VOILA ❤ turned out to the perfect dark ash blonde .
Hi my hair is the same and that what I plan to do, but can you please tell me what are the blue tones for level 7? I did some research and after their own numbering system it should be 7/8, as 8 is blue ash, but there isn't any 7/8 in the Koleston range. What am I missing? Do I just balance it with Special Mix?
@@lexie7753 I forget the exact code on the tube I think it was a 7/18 wells has a couple lines I’m not sure if it was koleston or a different line . I added a centimeter or two of blue to the mix to smoke it out and cool it down . I also let it sit for an extra 15 - 20 minutes to get max lift and deposit . I’m almost positive the tube was 7/18 or 7/89

Hey Ruth if a client wants to go from a level 3 to an all over level 8/9 they would need a highlight or bleach because color cannot lift that many levels.
Wow, now I know why getting your hair done in a salon is so expensive LOL!! You have to really know what you're doing with all these mixing ratios. Though, it makes me wonder how many stylists are actually good at this because I've left some salons with really bad looking hair that I have to fix at home.
I have black box dyed hair, and I want to have brown hair. I had a test strand done and it lifted to blonde. My hair looks red in the sun so I have warm/red undertones. Is the lift to blonde normal? The test was only on for 20 minues.

What about when lifting a lighter base like level 6 to an 8 or 9? Blondes always want that lighter ashy base. Even if it’s a 2 step process. Would this still be your go to formula? Just in 9?
So developer conrolls the lifting speed with bleach and level lift with color..does that mean that the 40vol is less damaging with color than with bleach or the same?

So what you said is: With Bleach, the Developer controls SPEED of lift; with Color, the Developer controls the number of LEVELS of lift.

I have black box dyed hair, and I want to have brown hair. I had a test strand done and it lifted to blonde. My hair looks red in the sun so I have warm/red undertones. Is the lift to blonde normal? The test was only on for 20 minues.
Wow what a good alternative to Bleach. if i had came across this Video sooner i would have gone with your recommended colors but unfortunately i used Bleach and now my hair is super dry😢

Can you lift colored hair that has been lifted with the previous color? Like if you did this process and you did it again a few weeks later would you be able to lift the hair another 2-3 levels?

It would be the same. When formulating gray you just need to make sure that the % of natural in your formula matches the % of gray.

What about when lifting a lighter base like level 6 to an 8 or 9? Blondes always want that lighter ashy base. Even if it’s a 2 step process. Would this still be your go to formula? Just in 9?
I have 6 roots and want to light my hair a tone or two. Is it the same process? Should i use 8.1 and 8.2 ?
So developer conrolls the lifting speed with bleach and level lift with color..does that mean that the 40vol is less damaging with color than with bleach or the same?
