1:40 that's bomb-proof bunker hangars for the Royal Air Force. They park fighter jets in there, and there's earth works so that if a bomb explodes in one hangar, the explosion or fire is stopped (by a big hill/earthworks) before the blast hits the hanger next to it. Basically an explosion is contained to only hit one aircraft/hangar at a time. As much to do with "Being attacked" as it is to do with "reloading a fighter jet accident" Each "Hangar" is kind of sunken into the ground a ways so the roof of the structure is at "Ground level" of the earth works surrounding it. Some of the hangars are designed so the jets "Taxi in" to the hangar, get rearmed, and then "continue straight out" back into the taxiway loop without needing to be turned around or pushed.
It’s a really great idea using it as a sporting complex. The land would otherwise be industrial. Netball. BMX. Shooting. All on the same site. The basketball stadium is 5 courts and used pretty much 7 days a week. Being inside when the fighter jets take off makes the ground rumble.
Gidday Rob. Thanks for the great feedback of our sporting facilities. It is such a well planned area that caters for many sports but is also central for most Top Enders. Marrara does host many AFL and NRL games up here and it's such a great spectacle for all sport lovers. As you can appreciate we are very isolated in comparison to other cities to access games. We have attended many games ourselves and enjoyed the atmosphere. Win or Lose :) We hope you love Australia as much as we do. So much to see and so little time..... Hope you can get to the NT sometime.
Was lucky enough to play at Larrakia Park (Football, soccer) for football nationals in 2012! We went up in September from the ACT still essentially in winter up to Darwin 30° and humid and played 7 games! But wow the complex was massive and the basketball facility was great as on one of the afternoons we played wheelchair basketball and Goalball
Rob, that’s more than just a tarp. It’s a shade sail and is a permanent fixture on sturdy poles or fixed to a building. Very common in Australia, and they cost about $3,000 - $5,000. (Much more than a tarp!)
Hey Rob, I worked on that golf course for a few months in about 2003 (maybe) I grew up just behind the top left corner on the N in NT at the start of the vid. It is such an awesome sports complex and had grown since I left Aus for the UK in 2012. Every few years they have the Arafura Games there (named after the Arafura Sea) in the indoor sports complex they have netball, basketball, volleyball and last I heard roller derby. I am hoping to move my family back home this year. Thank you for showcasing the Top end.
Hey Rob. As you love you stadiums the Adelaide oval stadium climb is well worth it when you get here. I'm sure you've already considered it. Just make sure you don't need the loo once you're up there as you are chained to everyone else. It's a great view and very informative about the history of the city and surrounding areas. See you in a few months
Hey Rob, you need to add Parramatta stadium, QLD Country Bank Stadium in Townsville and AAMI Park in Melbourne to your VR list if you want to checkout some dedicated football (rugby and soccer) stadiums in OZ!
As regards to the weather in Darwin, it’s warm all year round - 28-31degrees Celsius in winter, 30-38 degrees for the rest of the year. The wet rainy season usually occurs between December right through to late March, early April. Humidity is always around the 80-95 %. Not the kind of weather for three piece suits, leather coats or long pants ! 🤠🍺🍺🍺
Quite likely. Defence force, Defence support personnel, Spouse and family of Defence. That said there's also a large tourism industry, and Darwin is also a significant port for exporting all kinds of produce etc making its way north from NT, SA and western QLD and Northern WA, and quite a bit of offshore drilling going on up that way too.
10:48 that's Netball courts. Bit like a weird Basketball where you can't take a full step once you have the ball, and no backboard on the net. ruclips.net/video/aBuxsRnU50A/видео.html
@@falchoon Thanks. I must confess, as a Sydneysider, I don't know much about rainfall in the NT, I only know that different parts of it experience varying degrees of rainfall. Cheers ✌
Hey, Rob. I've meant to say this before - don't forget to keep your AFL ball pumped up - if you don't, the bladder sinks so you can't get the needle in any more (it happened to me). It would be a shame if it happened to you as well. I agree about the Darwin sporting precinct - great idea.
100% rugby league …NT have a huge league community …My team atm currently has about 6 guys from Darwin and NT who have come to Melbourne for work To play they have to travel 100km between places to play though
Well you're coming to Melbourne so you won't be disappointed, the MCG is the biggest stadium in Australia, also Etihad/ Marvel stadium. Actually there's too many to name

Played basket ball there as a kid. Watched Sepak takraw during Arafura games ( a very long time ago ) even watched the Harlem globe trotters there.

Thanks for checking out darwin and our stadium
"I bet it's hot in summer" It's hot all the friggin time, but in summer they turn the humidity up to soaking.
Summer, aka "Wet season"

We used to host the Arafura games in Darwin but the swimming would be at Casuarina

The Darwin city planners did a good job there.
Beautiful Blue Sea. Except for the crocs! 🐊

I live near Marrara
Did I pronounce it correctly?
No It's pronounced MAH-RAH-RAH
I grew up in Wulagi, moved to the UK 10 years ago. Hoping to move back in the next year.
By the way Darwin only has 2 tropical seasons the Wet and the Dry

"I bet its hot in summer" Darwin doesnt have summer, has 2 seasons, wet and dry.
A lot of Australia's defence forces are in Darwin. Wondering if alot of the players are from the Defence forces.
Quite likely. Defence force, Defence support personnel, Spouse and family of Defence.

Oh of course it is! Silly me. (We know what netball is as its popular here. Normally what the girls played at school!)
Very green & well maintained considering it is quite dry in the NT
it's the wettest of all the Australian Capitals in terms of rainfall, evaporation is intense though.
@@falchoon Thanks. I must confess, as a Sydneysider, I don't know much about rainfall in the NT, I only know that different parts of it experience varying degrees of rainfall. Cheers ✌

Oh Christ il do that now!!
At about 11mins..... they are netball courts
ah yes that makes sense!
G'day robbo wonder if NT has an ice skating rink ?????
Gidday Mark. We do have an Ice Skating rink, not at Marrara but just behind the Airport not far away.
100% rugby league …NT have a huge league community …My team atm currently has about 6 guys from Darwin and NT who have come to Melbourne for work

I thought there were league and union pitches
I think you might of been confused on one. I think it was netball.
Oh yes that makes perfect sense!
I think the pronounciation is Ma-raa-raa? Maybe someone can confirm. Nice vid anyway mate.
That’s how I say it.
I did use Google for the pronunciation and it said the version I said. 😂
Well you're coming to Melbourne so you won't be disappointed, the MCG is the biggest stadium in Australia, also Etihad/ Marvel stadium. Actually there's too many to name
I have done a VR tour of MCG. It was my first vr video
The WACA might be worth a look.
