I am now retired, but came to Perth with my family in 1983 from the UK, which was the best thing I ever did, and I had jobs and opportunities here in Australia that I could never have imagined having in the UK. Australia is great if you are prepared to work hard and can tolerate/avoid our dumb federal politicians. The only thing I regret is not being bold enough and going for more, but that said I have zero complaints. Life is what you make it.

sick video, i’m heading out to start my working holiday visa in just over a fortnight and i’m buzzing ! my background is in hospitality but i’m looking to branch out and get new skills so i’ve been really drawn to mining. trying to keep a growth mindset and push myself out my comfort zone to stop myself working the same bar jobs which i’ve already progressed in.

many FIFO roles in WA are now 8/6 rosters. (8 days on 6 off...not weeks!). if at all possible DO NOT start an outdoor FIFO role in the summer months (nov - mar)...the area where the roles are situated (the Pilbara) is EXTREMELY hot in those months

Hey Ryan, thanks for reaching out bud! Hope all is good in the UK 🤙🏾 If you’ve got a large amount of work experience in a trade, that’s going to be so advantageous! You’d just need to figure out what visa to go on that allows you to work. Also if there’s any vacancies similar to your experience? Seek jobs is one of the biggest for job ads, you had a look on there yet? One of the problems I struggled with was experience, and specifically “fifo experience”. Hope this helps mate 👍🏽
@@BenjaminHardingx well, I fly to different countries and then get a helicopter to the installation ship so I would guess that would qualify as fifo experience. I earn about 70-80k gbp in the Uk every year but seen mechy position for 2-300k a year in WA. Insane

Hey Peter, thanks for reaching out with your comment mate (: Are you based here in Perth? I’d suggest looking on seek jobs & apply for the jobs that best suit your education & experience if so. Most employers fly you out from Perth, West Aus. When I applied I needed to prove I had a Perth residential address. (Driving license etc) also need white card, first aid too. They’re easy to get sorted here. It’s an investment on your part but the perks are good. A few of my mates & housemate work FIFO & they make good money/enjoy their weeks off 🙌🏽 Hope this helps mate, any other questions give me a shout! 🤙🏾

Im looking at doing DAMA designated area migration agreement, finding it really hard to get a response from anyone. They seem very slow and relaxed about getting back to you. Im a truck driver and will go pretty much anywhere as i just want to get away from the UK.

Hey AbbyPage, thanks for reaching out! Glad you enjoyed the video (: When I applied majority employers needed a residential Perth address. Most fifo jobs the departure airport is Perth too. Most my friends that have got jobs in the mines (and myself) have flew out for holiday, get all the documents & certificates sorted (first aid, working at heights etc, driving license etc) and apply for jobs whilst onshore. Hey there Eryn, I applied for both! So fifo utilities (bar, restaurant, cleaning etc) Searched on seek, jora, indeed. Also went down Scarborough looking for bar work & few back then had vacancies! Trying to find Accom there though was a nightmare & so expensive for what you get 😅 didn’t check Perth city but it’s pretty busy normally. Northbridge too. Hey man, to work as a Drillers Offsider you have to have a WA driving licence, for this you also need a permanent address in Australia as I saw on the Department of Transport website. How did you get around being able to convert a UK driving licence to a WA one without having a permanent address? (ie: if you were living in temp accommodation such as a hostel?)

That address is what’s on my WA driving licence & registered with my banks etc. I was only in the hostel for like 4 days as had to move out of the house for a week that crossed over with fifo swing. i’m 20 years old and have 1 more year in my biomedicals sciences degree, i never worked and don’t have experience in any construction type or other jobs, can i really have a chance applying?
Hey mate, thanks for reaching out! When I applied I was going up against alot of other people with more experience & they had more work flexibility. (Aussi citizens, permanent residents) I always look at it in terms of how can I give the employer more value.. So what skills, education, experience can you provide for them etc The construction background definitely helped as my fifo job was intense manual labour. You are super young though which is ideal because you have time on your side 🙌🏽 so you could get the experience & work your way up. Also I researched fifo jobs a year+ before I went into it, and that’s why I did 10 months in construction to get closer to working in that industry. (And getting my regional day for visa extension) I’d say look for entry level roles that you’re keen on & see what criteria they ask for? See how many of their boxes you can tick or aspire to tick. What the off sider hourly rate ? Also mining isnt wasy to get into ,you dont make big money unless you have a trade , on a holiday visa you wont get hired as an operator on a mine site ,unless its driving a moxy on the construction side and the money isnt fantastic

Also I was doing 12 hour shifts near Norseman so sometimes weather be cold & wet. Got rained off a few times. Ive seen some people stick at it, not for me though. Hope this helps 🤙🏾 (:

Hi Ben, was the construction work you did in the Northern Territory easy to find? How did you go about it? I'm thinking of heading over in a month or so and it seems like I'd be best getting the regional work out of the way first with the time of year. Construction in Darwin counts towards the 88 days doesn't it?
Hey Daireb123, thanks for reaching out! It did take a few weeks yeah. I signed up with 2-3 agencies when I arrived. 1. Core staff 2. Protech 3. Red Appointments agency I found my labouring job. Worked on casual basis & just did as many hours as they would give me. Yeah the whole of NT is considered regional & goes towards the 88 days. I don’t think you have to do it after JULY though? Double check that on home affairs website. Hope this helps & all the best 🤙🏾😆

I know weekends don't count towards the 88 days unless you're full time, so is it one day for every 7.5 hours worked? I'm Irish so still got to do the days unfortunately...
@@daireb123 hey mate, so when I was doing it I’d work casual for 5 days from Monday to Friday, that working week I’d get more than 38+ hours so that counted as 7 days of the 88. My workplace was giving me 10 hours a day too so I was generating good money with casual rate & overtime. When I was there I saw a lot of expansion in the NT suburbs. The above was my agent, but the employer I worked for was Ostojic Civil Construction, they’re huge up there 🙌🏽 I’d say start with Red Appointments & see if Amanda is still working there, she was awesome & got me setup super fast (: hope this helps bud!

Hey there Kiesherlock91, Thanks for reaching out (: yeah, hard to say on that one. Alot of variables there to consider, how much you spend, where you want to live & what accom you choose, sponsor visa costs, weekly living costs (food,drink), travel/commuting costs. I’d just do as much research as possible into what you want your family life to look like in that new location ✈️🏡 Also consider when the next pay checks coming in after you relocate. If it’s a while then the bigger the “safety net” (funds in the bank) then the better. Hope this helps in some way, best of luck with your research 🙏🏽🇦🇺

Hey Viktor, yeah nice one! Myself & all my backpacker travel friends found it really hard to get into, especially on the WH 417 visa. I hear from locals & other fifo workers that best way in is through referral/someone you know already working in the industry. If they have contacts that know of vacancies & can match your experience & qualifications then that be good. I myself have struggled massively with it, my work has dried up & the client projects have been slowing down. I’ve applied for so many jobs online & it’s super competitive. You may have a different experience to me though, could get lucky & find a way in somehow 🤙🏾 Most companies want fifo experience & alot of experience in the job you’re applying for so make it visible straight away on your CV/Resume. Apply for all jobs you think you’d be able to provide value & consistently keep applying. (I applied for weeks to months). Network where you can & talk to everyone. Hey mate, cheers for ya comment! I wasn’t allowed to because the accommodation & food was being paid for by the client, I needed to work to get those 2 paid for. If I didn’t it would’ve cost me alot. Also with such a regional location, it was the only accom in the area so those rooms were always filled with workers. Hope this helps 🤙🏾

Highlight this work experience & skills on your CV/resume (put it in clear sight) so your future employer can see them. References also help. If you are doing FIFO in Australia, DON’T LIVE IN AUSTRALIA.. you’ll be paying rent/mortgage on a house you’re not using while at work.. and going broke on food and everything else on your days off… do a 2&2 role, 1. You don’t need to take holidays as you can live overseas on your 2 weeks off and only pay rent on your days off. 2. You will save soooo much money living in Asia, Indonesia and basically any country that’s cheaper and less heavily taxed as Australia!!!!
@@itzFluxey you can rent an apartment in Cambodia for $250 per month, even less for 2 weeks. If you have a house in australia you have to pay for the whole month (weather you are there or at work). The money you save on rent per month will more than cover cost of flights. Cost of living in Asia or Indonesia are at least 4:1 meaning you can live ATLEAST 4 years over there to every 1 year here, then you wisely invest the rest.

Hello there Waltergarre, I have mates that do fifo from 18 years old up to 50+ years old. So a big range of age. Darwin is great in the dry season, lovely warm temperatures but the wet season is pretty full on! Depends on what ya relocating for, work, travel or both? I was working in civil construction and work got rained off a lot. If your working inside then no worries. Hope this helps mate (: 🙏🏽

When I applied majority employers needed a residential Perth address. Most fifo jobs the departure airport is Perth too. Most my friends that have got jobs in the mines (and myself) have flew out for holiday, get all the documents & certificates sorted (first aid, working at heights etc, driving license etc) and apply for jobs whilst onshore. Whilst you’re here network & make connections as much as you can (:

Also went down Scarborough looking for bar work & few back then had vacancies!

Hey man, to work as a Drillers Offsider you have to have a WA driving licence, for this you also need a permanent address in Australia as I saw on the Department of Transport website. How did you get around being able to convert a UK driving licence to a WA one without having a permanent address? (ie: if you were living in temp accommodation such as a hostel?)
Hey mate, thanks for reaching out with this comment (: yeah, correct 👍🏽 I have had a full time address in WA since Oct 2022. That address is what’s on my WA driving licence & registered with my banks etc. I was only in the hostel for like 4 days as had to move out of the house for a week that crossed over with fifo swing. The hostels were so expensive back then too 😅

When I applied I was going up against alot of other people with more experience & they had more work flexibility. (Aussi citizens, permanent residents)
I always look at it in terms of how can I give the employer more value..
So what skills, education, experience can you provide for them etc
The construction background definitely helped as my fifo job was intense manual labour.
You are super young though which is ideal because you have time on your side 🙌🏽 so you could get the experience & work your way up.
Also I researched fifo jobs a year+ before I went into it, and that’s why I did 10 months in construction to get closer to working in that industry. (And getting my regional day for visa extension)
I’d say look for entry level roles that you’re keen on & see what criteria they ask for? See how many of their boxes you can tick or aspire to tick.

What the off sider hourly rate ? Also mining isnt wasy to get into ,you dont make big money unless you have a trade , on a holiday visa you wont get hired as an operator on a mine site ,unless its driving a moxy on the construction side and the money isnt fantastic

Hey Randy, thanks for reaching out! Yeah, it’s one the hardest jobs I’ve done. Both physically & mentally challenging. Also I was doing 12 hour shifts near Norseman so sometimes weather be cold & wet. Got rained off a few times. Ive seen some people stick at it, not for me though. Hope this helps 🤙🏾 (:

Hi Ben, was the construction work you did in the Northern Territory easy to find? How did you go about it? I'm thinking of heading over in a month or so and it seems like I'd be best getting the regional work out of the way first with the time of year. Hey Daireb123, thanks for reaching out! It did take a few weeks yeah. I signed up with 2-3 agencies when I arrived.
1. Core staff
2. Protech
3. Red Appointments agency I found my labouring job.
Worked on casual basis & just did as many hours as they would give me.
Yeah the whole of NT is considered regional & goes towards the 88 days.
I don’t think you have to do it after JULY though? Double check that on home affairs website.

@@daireb123 hey mate, so when I was doing it I’d work casual for 5 days from Monday to Friday, that working week I’d get more than 38+ hours so that counted as 7 days of the 88.
My workplace was giving me 10 hours a day too so I was generating good money with casual rate & overtime. When I was there I saw a lot of expansion in the NT suburbs. The above was my agent, but the employer I worked for was Ostojic Civil Construction, they’re huge up there 🙌🏽 I’d say start with Red Appointments & see if Amanda is still working there, she was awesome & got me setup super fast (: hope this helps bud!

Thanks for reaching out (: yeah, hard to say on that one. Alot of variables there to consider, how much you spend, where you want to live & what accom you choose, sponsor visa costs, weekly living costs (food,drink), travel/commuting costs. I’d just do as much research as possible into what you want your family life to look like in that new location ✈️🏡
Also consider when the next pay checks coming in after you relocate. If it’s a while then the bigger the “safety net” (funds in the bank) then the better.

Hey Viktor, yeah nice one! Myself & all my backpacker travel friends found it really hard to get into, especially on the WH 417 visa. I hear from locals & other fifo workers that best way in is through referral/someone you know already working in the industry. If they have contacts that know of vacancies & can match your experience & qualifications then that be good. I myself have struggled massively with it, my work has dried up & the client projects have been slowing down. I’ve applied for so many jobs online & it’s super competitive. You may have a different experience to me though, could get lucky & find a way in somehow 🤙🏾
Most companies want fifo experience & alot of experience in the job you’re applying for so make it visible straight away on your CV/Resume. Apply for all jobs you think you’d be able to provide value & consistently keep applying. (I applied for weeks to months). Network where you can & talk to everyone. Online & offline 🙏🏽

I wasn’t allowed to because the accommodation & food was being paid for by the client, I needed to work to get those 2 paid for. If I didn’t it would’ve cost me alot. Also with such a regional location, it was the only accom in the area so those rooms were always filled with workers.

Highlight this work experience & skills on your CV/resume (put it in clear sight) so your future employer can see them. References also help.
Apply for all the jobs you can find, online (seek jobs, Jora, indeed, direct on employers website)
Talk the the locals, network in person, see if any of your friends know of jobs going (this is How I got my job)

I’d recommended applying on seek jobs with everything you can offer the employer in relation to the job role you’re applying for (state this clearly on your resume/cv), then see what comes back. If you are doing FIFO in Australia, DON’T LIVE IN AUSTRALIA.. you’ll be paying rent/mortgage on a house you’re not using while at work.. and going broke on food and everything else on your days off…
do a 2&2 role, 1. You don’t need to take holidays as you can live overseas on your 2 weeks off and only pay rent on your days off. 2. You will save soooo much money living in Asia, Indonesia and basically any country that’s cheaper and less heavily taxed as Australia!!!!

@@itzFluxey you can rent an apartment in Cambodia for $250 per month, even less for 2 weeks. If you have a house in australia you have to pay for the whole month (weather you are there or at work). The money you save on rent per month will more than cover cost of flights. Cost of living in Asia or Indonesia are at least 4:1 meaning you can live ATLEAST 4 years over there to every 1 year here, then you wisely invest the rest.

Hello there Waltergarre, I have mates that do fifo from 18 years old up to 50+ years old. So a big range of age.
Darwin is great in the dry season, lovely warm temperatures but the wet season is pretty full on! Depends on what ya relocating for, work, travel or both? I was working in civil construction and work got rained off a lot. If your working inside then no worries. Hope this helps mate (: 🙏🏽
