This is insane, I love the overall quality of the video (the fact that i can watch it in 4k is just so satisfying lol) Such a simple, yet extremely helpful explanation that too many creators make waaaay too complicated. Awesome job, I'll be watching more of your videos fs ✊
What's cool about this is you can use the sets over and over for multiple videos. The AI fill is tougher to do that if you move your camera setup at all video to video.
Love your content! The whole process from 4:53 - 5:35 could optionally be skipped if you create an alpha output in your color nodes panel and connect the output of your last node with the alpha out.
And you can also add a second MediaOut on the Fusion page to then be able to add a another Source on the Color page and grade things (BG/FG) separately
Magic Mask has a specific "Person" setting (next to the reset settings button). This usually gives you better results when selecting people. Cool idea though, Set-a-light is awesome!
I found that the “person” option did not do as well as object. I am due to revisit this tool though. I feel like a few improvements may have been made since uploading this video. I ❤️ set a light. Wildly valuable!
I really want to try something similar with UE5.2 and create a dynamic plate in the background with some kind of lighting that helps the light merge the compositing of the shot. Maybe a jungle and a light shown through a plant leaf. This is awesome man, you got my brain whirring with ideas!
The background movie is Tenet, right? There is Niel and the Protagonist walking, there is water and blond woman and then there is the reverse/heist/CQB fight scene... Or then I am just trying to make this fit.
Amazing! Another thing that would sell it even more work be to get the acoustics right ie add echo/reverb to match the space you're creating. To the keen ear you can tell that the space your recording in is a lot smaller then the virtual space.
Holy moly! Leaps and bounds better than AE's rotobrush! I never use rotobrush because it's so jittery and I'm able to get better results rotoing by hand, but boy does it hurt my hand (and drive me insane) after a while! I'd really like to put AE behind me for good, but some things are still easier and faster for me to do there. I might add DaVinci as another tool just for things like this until I'm fully eased into it.
Hi Blanie, this is helpful. Thanks! Do you have any tips on how to replace the whole background from the green screen with the full body moving in the frame, preserving the subject shadows, etc?
hey thanks! there are a couple things you can do in this scenario and it kind of depends on how the lighting is in the scene, and how dark the shadows are. for one you can recreate them with VFX, or by basically duplicating and rotating the person, turning them to a matte, or just to black/grey/dark, and feathering off where needed to make a shadow, this way the motion matches what they did in real life. you can also use digital lights and shadow catchers. I dont have tons of experience with this particular scenario but hope that helps a little.
@@BlaineWestropp1 Thank you for confirming ! and also thank you for the cool video. I'm trying to shift to Resolve from Blender VSE, hopefully your channel will help
Yes! Not all the cameras have the meta data, but this is one reason that having lens data passed though to camera like Cooke /i technology is super valuable. Especially useful for VFX.
Subscribed, love this sort of content and method of learning .. One thing I did notice is that at the end when you are back in the fake living room, your arms move in an odd fashion as you're speaking.. it sort of looks like you are typing while you are talking, but since there's no way to see your hands, it looks a little weird. Obviously part of this effect is magnified now that I know how it's done... is this a side effect of how the masking is completed? I also noticed that the sound profile doesn't really match the target room.. since there's so many soft/absorbent surfaces in the fake room, I would recommend adding some baffle boards (you can use blank painting canvases with the back of the frames filled with towels to accomplish this on the cheap).. By using a number of frames, you can add/remove them off your surrounding walls to add/remove baffle/bounce to choose a combination that suits your fake room
hey thanks! good eyes and ears here. youre right about the sound not matching the big room, that is beyond what I was willing or able to do for this video (I am not a sound pro, I do not do any post sound work and my sound quality is not top notch), but still a great observation. I didn't notice anything with the hands, maybe I was just fidgeting with them or something. I will need to take a closer look. this technique does take a lot of work to finesse and I tried to remain still so I could quickly process everything for this video.
Thank you, brother, for your effort. I have a question: What do they call this field? How do I design these same or similar rooms in the same field? What do I write on RUclips so I can learn more? Thank you❤ 1:21
Love this question as I’m not an audio person and use a very easy and affordable setup. It was likely a sennheiser mke 400 on the table in front of me. There’s a chance it was the zoom f2 lav.
I love me some Fusion but looking at your setup, to me, it seems you could do all comping and color correction (having both the foreground and the background in the same node setup) on the Color page (and add the alpha there too) skipping those parts in your Fusion part. That way you don't have to jump to the Fusion page and back whenever you want to change anything. And you also get the superior CC tools of the Color page. It's a bit much to explain here but basically you have your sources in one Fusion clip, each source connected to its own MediaOut node. Then when you open that clip on the Color page you add source outputs on the node area and connect those to their own Corrector nodes and layer them with, you guessed it, a Layer node. The alpha footage you drag and drop from the Media Pool and connect it to the alpha input of the foregrounds corrector node. Do a search for "add source" in the manual for details:)
@@BlaineWestropp1 It might be one of the most unintuitive workflows in all of DaVinci (and there's a couple) so the chances of randomly finding it out by one self is preeeetty slim. Thanks for sharing! 🙏 Blaine, how do you see this tech as a film maker in terms of using it or not? Would you prefer an original organic bg over a fake one and for what reasons? This is like.. “I have a solid colored wall small room let’s turn it into something else and experiment before the tech turns into something truly nuts” type of thing
You can basically do the same process in AE. You’d set an alpha matte, or you can use any of AE’s tools to remove the background, then place a new one in. I find resolves magic mask pretty nice to use. You could even make your mattes in resolve and do the BG comp in AE

Was the movie in the background TENET?
Yes! Good eyes!
So it's like unreal's tech except the camera must be stationary and you can't do it live?
This is like.. “I have a solid colored wall small room let’s turn it into something else and experiment before the tech turns into something truly nuts” type of thing
Wow!
love it!
Could you show how to do this in After Effects? The learning curve for Fusion is extremely difficult.
You can basically do the same process in AE. You’d set an alpha matte, or you can use any of AE’s tools to remove the background, then place a new one in. I find resolves magic mask pretty nice to use. You could even make your mattes in resolve and do the BG comp in AE
thanks for this, love the editing. Nice n' snappy. What camera / lens do you use to film your videos?
Thanks. Lately I’ve been using the Alexa mini LF. the lens is always different. Often times Prototype lenses :)
