Good day, Blaine! I'm studying video editing and all by using your RUclips video as reference, so i was wondering how to i make a gradient ramp or greyscale thing. Thank you in advance!
@@UserDef-c1o good day! In the edit panel, click effects in the top left. Then click generator. Then grayscale. Drag to timeline. Right click it in the timeline, and make it a compound clip. Let me know if you need further direction!
I love the crash zoom effect! I don't know why..maybe it's because I'm a big fan of Tarantino's movies 😅 But it's an expensive effect^^ That's why I still love using Hi8 camcorders
Love it, and yes expensive to do on the modern cams 😭 hi8 is cool!
Dope! What lens camera combo was used for the main talking head on this one? I love the almost fisheye look. Looks a bit wider than a 16mm to me. Whatever action camera you had mounted on the monitor for the field stuff did great too. Love your work!
hi! me talking to the camera was an Alexa mini LF with an atlas mercury 36mm lens. the action cam on the monitor was the insta360 go 3, which comes in handy pretty often.
@@BlaineWestropp1huh weird. Looked wider than 36mm! Barreling on it is cool
How about 10 floors down… Same building.
staying in the building.. I am just not sure. I cant imagine that would keep a connection. but that is only 100 feet or so, so maybe. I could test soon and report back
Great skills but I had to un sub as I don't need women in lingerie in my feed
Wouldn't you also have a small worklight on the table?
likely yes :)
Thank you so much. I fixed my technicolor lut using this trick. My node tree looks so much better and the exposure is dead on.
Awesome! Love it :)
Would you consider this camera's noise cleaner than say, the BMCC6K FF?
Ah I am not sure. I would need to side by side. Maybe I’ll take a look some 6k ff footage I have. I’d bet it’s cleaner at native iso.
@@BlaineWestropp1 aight, thanks for the answer!
Man what's that song at 5:11???
hey the song is called "here" by VIBES. here is a link - audiio.com/vibes/all-day/here
Would like to see how the FX30 compares to GH7. In my testing up to iso 4000 is still clean.
That’s nice. I’d love to test them side by side.
Thanks for this tutorial. So helpful. The biggest takeaway I'm taking from here is that once you light the scene, you should play around with different frames for different shots without relighting every time. This way you can always be in the scene and your shots can help achieve a consistent story. I had never thought of this before. Thanks! How is the light outside covering such a wide area? That's quite a few windows on your garage door, and they're widely spaced. What's going on outside?
hi thank you! I think the point is that you light the whole space, so that you can move around. you can then tweak the lighting a little bit for each scene, and what often happens is you tweak the lighting on the talent, but not the space so much. Overall you just build a world that you can live in for the scene, to minimize resetting lights and you change angles. Often times this is to either replicate reality, or to build a new one. What would the light be doing in the world I am building.. instead of.. let me light this person sitting here. also, outside I had 2 Forza 500s. there is a photo of that setup in this video. let me know if you need a timestamp!
❤🔥 (if you can/would/want/like, could we get a video where you take us from beginning to end through a commercial/music video project from pre to post . The end of the 'Brianna_CK.mp4' video was so funny and I'm really interested.)
This could be arranged 😊
@@BlaineWestropp1 HYPE!

I like the camera!
@@BlaineWestropp1 i have it and im tryna learn from the best
hey blaine, can u explain what you learned from this test and in what ISO ranges & modes you'd feel comfortable using the FX30 in low(er) light scenarios? sorry if this is a stupid question, I am quite a novice and I like when you give context to what you're testing, why and what your takeaways are.
I tested it too and I found that a higher ISO image that was brought down to the same brightness as a lower ISO image, was significantly cleaner. Must be the internal noise reduction. I tested the 2500 ISO vs the 12800 ISO lowered by 2.28 Stops and the 12800 image was cleaner. Just keep an eye out for your clipping highlights
hi, I think the main thing I learned was just what the different ISO values look like, and that I could potentially shoot at 1600 or 3200 in flexible and have it look better than cineEI raised in post. I think a few stops higher than each native, in flexible, is a little cleaner than cineEI raised. but then on the fx30, the 2nd native iso is 2500, so do I shoot at 2500 cineEI or 3200 flexible. I am not sure. need to look closer. may be more of a difference on the FX3 as the 2nd native is so much higher. I also learned that you can go pretty high in flexible and it still looks good!
@@BlaineWestropp1 thank you, i appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts ❤
Sony underestimates the aps-c/super 35 lineup. They have 6 different sensors for Full frame as per the users need but only 2 aps-c sensors out of which one is even discontinued. This 26MP sensor suits A6700 the best for 14 bit RAW photography with Mechanical shutter but not the FX30. A 10MP 12bit only 4K video sensor will lower the rolling shutter and manufacturing cost, also 4K 120fps no crop and better signal to noise ratio for higher ISO values.
Hi! The fx30 has that 26mp sensor. Also, it does crop when going to 120p. I do like both the fx3 and the 30. Nice size and price.
Yes, well it's ok till 4K 60 and no problem if rolling shutter is not an issue. Bayer sensors when downsampled do give a finer texture which is happening in FX30 (6K downsampled to 4K). Fujifilm XH-2S also has a 26MP X-Trans sensor but that is stacked and records in 14bit instead of 12bit upto 60FPS which gives you higher latitude in shadows compared to FX30's sensor. Also 4K120fps no crop :)
This sensor needs alot of light to stay clean. Almost never shoot flexible just because of bad the chroma noise gets outside of the base isos. still love the image from this camera though.
I don’t really shoot flexible, I just noticed that a flexible 1600 or 3200 seems a bit cleaner than raising cine ei but 1 or 2 stops. So if I had to shoot at 1600, I may consider flexible, or just shoot at 2nd native? I’d say usually I would stick at cine ei 800 and light accordingly. But if I was running around at night, may consider 1600 flexible. More testing to be done.
@@BlaineWestropp1 Yeah Ill have to check it out as well! Always appreciate the content and insight!
Thank ya 🫡
@@BlaineWestropp1 Is the second native that bad?
@@BlaineWestropp1 Just do ETTR with flexible iso if needed exposure is more than 2500. Because Digital gain helps YUV to not clip shadows but make sure not to clip highlights.

Hi Blaine! I really hope you have time to answer all my questions about cameras. :) I came across your video because I’m looking for a lightweight camera for a documentary project. Just to give you an idea: I have to follow a character who, as a biologist, climbs steep slopes, scales the walls of abandoned buildings, and cycles for miles-all in one day. I realized that getting a cinema camera would be a big mistake for me. I really prefer Blackmagic cameras over other brands, but I’m unsure about a couple of things: the battery life (how many LP-E6 batteries would I need to carry for a full day of filming?) and the stabilization, since I’ll always need to shoot handheld. I really like your approach to filmmaking, so I was hoping you might help me make a decision! :)
Hey sorry for the delay. Do you know the elevation you will be climbing? Do you really need a very light camera? Or can you shoot it with a heavier setup and have a team? If it is a one day shoot, are you renting the equipment, or are you looking to buy? If you prefer Blackmagic, I would go with that. I like Blackmagic. I will also say the fx3/30 is very light, easy to move around with, battery life is nice, and auto focus. But.. do you really need auto focus? It all depends what you want to capture, and how you want to approach capturing it. If your task was to record without cutting the entire day and you need every moment in focus, maybe an fx3. Sometimes I approach shooting things as if I had only 1000 feet of film. Planned. Precise. Controlled. Find your approach and goals, the gear decisions will follow. Happy to help further! Also, I am unsure on the battery life question you asked. Gotta do some googling for that. I’m sure the run time is out there.

Nice job, nice video, BUT: At 8:16 you say that you shot with the Alexa at ISO/EI 200. Why not (the Alexa LF native) ISO/EI 800 and with the internal 0.6 ND filter on? Tit for tat, I reckon one might want the best potential from both worlds, that is whatever lattitude film stock has on one hand and the best potential lattitude a digital sensor has on the other hand, which is at its native ISO/EI
Thank you, I did do this! Also, see the pinned comment. Let me know if the link doesn’t work. Sometimes it expires.

Could you make a video about gear that you think DPs should buy as opposed to rent? I’ll be graduating film school soon
I do have a video on this channel about buying stuff! for someone just graduating, I'd buy an Alexa classic or a red scarlet-w on Ebay, or an fx3 and a 24-70 lens. depends what type of work you want to do and how you want to do it. fx3 will be the more modern, versatile, and easy to move around with option.

I think it’s a great option. There are 3 new units on the market. This, DJI SDR, and something from acsoon. This is the only one of the 3 I’ve used, and I like it a lot.
