I honestly think that the black bathing suit represents literally just that, a black bathing suit. Many of us gained some weight during quarantine, so did our Lana. I remembered seeing pictures of her during this time and thinking “shit, her “fans” and press sure are gonna have a lot to say about this.” But seeing it only made me happy honestly, my body sure changed a bit too. So yeah, I think she’s literally talking about how her bathing suit seemed to be the only thing still fitting her, and the frustration that goes with it, but that her body still is her temple, no matter what it looks like. But I could be wrong.

I feel like the title track is talking about Lana realising the fact that she is ageing and she doesn’t have much youth left for another new love. She said "Most men don't want a woman with a legacy, it's of age" and she’s scared cause she’s been waiting for the man to paint her banisters blue, and her banisters are now grey. That literally means she’s still waiting for the Mr. Right but now she’s getting older she’s not sure if he would love her when she’s no longer young and beautiful.😭😭😭

    • @Oudri125
      @Oudri125 2 года назад +5

I mean the song is very literal so the meaning of it is very obvious. She has a void that she tries to fill with her relationships with men but she's trying to focus on the love she gets from her best friends and her family instead - except the void never truly leaves (hence the second verse)

You’re right about it sounding like a western, the trio interlude is a remixed version of the trio from the good the bad and the ugly during the final standoff scene, also the chime sound effects in black bathing suit are from the same soundtrack, which ties it into the previous song.

Thunder and Dealer were written in 2017 with The last shadow puppets for an album they wrote together. The male voice in Dealer is miles kane. Thunder leaked in 2020 and it used to have a production without piano. If you lie down with me, chery blossom, nectar of the gods and living legend were written with her ex boyfrend barrie for ultraviolence. If you lie down with me has never been heard before but the other three leaked some time ago.

the trap Interdule evokes the Honeymoon era. this album is kind of a patchwork actually, there’s a very few old demos on it that she re-produced to release, we can also feel a lot of vibes from previous and different eras on it and, of course, something super new. Lana never misses a trick ;-)

Sweet Carolina was written for Lana's pregnant sister by Lana, Lana's Dad; Rob, Lana's Sister; Caroline aka Chuck (hence the song name Sweet Carolina), and Lana's friend; Alana. Her dad is playing piano on the song and the voice at the beginning. They said they wrote the song in around 30 minutes and recorded it in one take. It's basically a love letter from Lana to her sister if she ever experiences Postpartum Depression aka the baby blues. There's some inside jokes in there like in the first verse, but it's really just a sweet, cheerful, and extremely personal song. Without a doubt my favorite song on the album

Lana has described this album as what it was like, what happened, and where she is. This album is ruled by threes, the first three songs sort of roadmap the album and then the interlude, ‘the trio’ segues into the rest of the album!! Sweet Carolina was done in one take and Dealer features Miles Kane! Nectar of the gods is my fav because it’s sort of existential, that first verse is one of the most beautiful things she’s ever written. Arcadia is this idea of a sanctuary, but as a song I think the deeper meaning lies within her accepting her body, she’s always been heavily criticized weirdly and especially in 2015-16. But I think a lot of the comparisons she makes of her body to natural formations and such lead to that

The banisters are a metaphor for bruises (the stages of bruising) first blue which is when shes in pain and heart broken and the bruises are fresh then green "all my sisters come to paint my banisters green" (half way through healing) and then grey "green and grey" which is the remnants of the bruise so it is practically healed when her friends and family come to support her, you can also see the bruising metaphor on the three single covers with the bruises on her collarbone being edited to be more and more prominent each song

I wish you would sometimes pause the songs when talking about your interpretations because for example in Arcadia you completely missed the whole second portion of the song which was her (main point) talking about how LA, Hollywood, and America failed her (you’ll need a miracle). She says “they built me up 300 hundred feet tall just to tear me down - so I’m leaving them as I was five foot eight western bound”
This song is one of my favorites. We have seen her go from achieving her dream to be in LA (Radio) and her fighting to make it (Gods and Monsters) to her finally realizing how toxic LA is and leaving (Arcadia)
I keep editing cuz that’s just how good the lyrics are. Arcadia is a town in California but it’s also a place of calmness serenity and perfection. That’s why the references to angels and LA. She also says she wants to be in Arcadia (in Cali) but since LA is destroying her she’s moving on to finding Arcadia. She’s “a lost little girl in this town”.

Textbook I feel like it’s her trying to recreate all the things she didn’t get from her father. While being pleased by the similarities her man does have to him. At first I thought the “and then there was the issue of her” was that he had a woman. But then I realized she could be addressing the way her mom made her feel “didn’t like myself or the life I had”. I feel like she switches back and forth between talking to her dad and this man. “If i go blonde we could get our old love back” Like asking her dad if she went back to blonde like when she was younger, could we rewrite history,? but she’s talking to this man, because In her head she sees her dad. Kind of like in a movie when it flickers from one person to an old memory. CHILLS

I believe the song Black Bathing Suit is about body shaming. She has been the target of criticism about her body since she gained weight for some time now. Some parts of the lyrics seem to reflect the subject better:
The only thing that still fits me is this black bathing suit
I wish you could see to my soul through this black bathing suit
    My black bathing suit
(Oh, let 'em talk about me)
    They're just yesterday's news

i think black bathing suit is the opposite of white dress. white dress was the good days when she felt on top of the world and like a god and the black bathing suit is during the pandemic when she's feeling older and more unsure

Great reaction! I binged all your Lana reactions last week 😂 really love the songwriting perspective. Too simple? Nah. I prefer simpler to overly complicated. Substance over style any day for me.
Really like your new single too, I checked out some of your music on Spotify! You can absolutely have your own song be song of the week hahaha
I'm gonna watch your Fiona Apple album reaction next... I adore her, probably even more than Lana lol... I'm actually nervous that you started with Fetch the Bolt Cutters and worried you won't like her based on that album. It's a great album but she's kind of an acquired taste... Her first couple of albums are a little easier to get into haha
Anyway sorry for rambling, thanks for the breakdown and looking forward to more Lana and Adele and hopefully others! ✌🏼

"This is Dealer...so...might not be as chill" LOL understatement 😅 I already knew it was gonna be her yelling because it was meant to be on Chemtrails and she said it would be her "yelling her head off" and then it got scrapped and put on this album. So I sorta knew what to expect going in but it still shook me to the core lmao. I still don't understand how the hell she screamed so musically??? Also, she sang in all the sections except the verses. The verses were Miles Kane who is in a band called The Last Shadow Puppets with Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys. Miles and Alex both worked with Lana on Thunder too.

39:26 maybe when she sings "you feel afraid, mommy is there" she reffers to her fans or people who see her music and her lyrics as a safety place to reflect their emotions. Her art embrace us and she knows it.
Is just that protective cancerian side of her for the people she loves the most. And when they're feeling afraid, she will be there showing them that there's new begginings, cherry blossoms after the dark and sadness they're passing through...

Arcadia is a poetic shaped space associated with bountiful natural splendor and harmony. The 'Garden' is often inhabited by shepherds. The concept also figures in Renaissance mythology. ... Furthermore, it is seen as a lost, Edenic form of life, contrasting to the progressive nature of Utopian desires.

Sweet Carolina is about her sister ( usually referred as Chuck by Lana in some previous song) giving birth. The song was written by Lana with her brother and father and it is about reassuring her sister that they’ll be there for her after the birth of her baby. Baby blue here refers to post-partum depression

my thoughts on the "simplicity" - most of these songs have been in her roster for years. recorded, rearranged and remixed. so they might just sound too done to her ears, which is why they seem simplistic and under-developed now, because after years of tinkering with them, she stripped them back down. but true fans, probably own all versions of everything, so we know her true genius

Blue banisters I feel like implies the man wants her to change, and she’s unwilling. She realizes the only way he will come around is if she changes to what he wants. Her girls who accept her and love her, they have each other. But she recognizes they’ll never be able to provide the “rain” to her fire that yearns for the love of a man. However she’s ok with this pain, she’ll learn to live. I feel like that’s a reality a lot of people feel! That they will never be loved as they are, so they settle on being alone. Not to be funny, but that’s my grandma lol That’s just how I took it!
