Could you deconstruct the best album of 80's The Smiths - The Smiths debut
The picture is really *existential* 😂no shade
Watching people discover Lana is one of my favorite hobbies LOL
😊💕😊
LMAO SAME 😂
SAME
It's my only hobby
100 percent
This album ages like fine wine
🍷🍷🥴
Lana's entire discography does.
Correction: THE ALBUM JUST DONT AGE!
Listen to it in 5 10 years later, it be just as good 😌
@@ChanRawrer it can only get better
The things I do tho, for me to experience listening this album again for the first time. That shit was just magical. She became my favorite artist in just one listening.
24:02 “its so dark, i love this” ... wait til ultraviolence 🙂
I mean by the title alone...
@@Luscent Ultraviolence is a masterpiece, not only because various tracks were freestyled by her, the opening song to that album is 🔥🔥🔥
RIGHT
Ultraviolence is my least favourite of her albums.

I love in National Anthem were there's a lyric that goes "he said to be cool, but I don't know how yet" and then later one she goes "he said to be cool, but I'm already coolest, um who do you think you're dealing with" ugh, queen of character development
Oh I love that!
If you are all in for storytelling, Lana Del Rey’s discography is the best discography. It’s like a continuous story, theme and mindset starting from BTD to Chemtrails. That’s why I love her...and that’s coming from a swiftie.
even taylor swift is a lana fan
Even Taylor has stated before how Lana is so underated and how she paved the way for many artist. That made me love Taylor even more.
Being a taylana Stan is a blessing
You’re not ready for the lyricism on ultraviolence
Oh damnn

True
Period! her best album!
NFR says hello
Especially the bridges, pure heaven and incomparable
Off to the Races is partially based on the book Lolita. The phrase “Light of my life, fire of my loins” is in the first sentence of the book.
There is a B-side song called Lolita as well
she references lolita in "Angels Forever, Forever Angels" and "Velvet Crowbar" as well (unreleased)
it’s not based off the book, she uses lolita as an allegory for her toxic relationships that she had with older men while still being young, also carmen IS lana, she was describing her experiences (in a hyperbolic sense) as a cautionary tale of everything that happened to her, no matter how nice the music sounds to not wish for what she had
@@bluewescott4631 what lyric is being referenced to Lolita in velvet crowbar?
@@camilazapata1742 "'Flame-colored paradise' is a similar lyric to 'paradise is a love-colored flame sky' from 'Angels Forever, Forever Angels.' Both of these lyrics allude to a quote from the 1955 book 'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov. The quote referenced from the book is 'Paradise-a paradise whose skies were the color of hell-flames.'"
-from the lana fandom velvet crowbar page
this is the best selling debut album by a female (debuting in the 2010s) its a classic and it keeps charting til this day
Lana actually suffered from alcoholism when she was really young!
Maybe its like mountain dew is unhealthy but its diet, its trying to be something good although it will never be because it's still an unhealthy drink. And also maybe its adds to the classic americana vibes that she paints the pictures in her music with
Yes wow yes! I love that!!
The Mountain Dew in Diet Mountain Dew actually refers to moonshine. The diet refers to the beauty standards of new york city.
Wow..... I've never looked at it like that !!!!
You should watch the million dollar man's live version. Lana's vocals are just...
Ultraviolence is my favorite of her albums, but born to die was the album that converted me and probably was TOO influential on my youth haha
It's not exactly a good influence 😂
Ultraviolence ❤❤
Same!!! Born to die introduced me to her and ultraviolence is on of my favorite albums ever
Absolutely in the same boat on both counts. Came for Born to Die, stayed for Ultraviolence
"Think I'll miss you forever, like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky. Late is better than ever, even if you're gone I'm gonna drive." Just genius bridge in summertime sadness
The line is actually "Later's better than never" which is a play on the common idiom "better late than never."
Summertime sadness is about Lana's real life friend committing suicide on a summer and it makes Lana sad to think about it. So yes the song is kind of like a beautiful goodbye to a beautiful friend.
It's heartbreaking now I know the story!
@@Luscent btw what's your Instagram? The links aren't working in the description :-;
@@walimasud502 oh it's @singsongdan
Not it isn’t that’s just a rumor she dispelled over a decade ago
lana talked about the meaning of the song radio in 2012! she said "i wrote it when a guy i used to know came back into my life, so i was like, now my life is sweet like cinnamon, cause he came back". she went on to say that "people will come out of the woodwork and change their mind about you, they'll start to like you because you're on the radio, but i don't mind, cause i'd rather have people be nice to me, so i like it. i don't really care why people are nice to me, i just like it when it's easier".
Wow that's some heavy stuff - I hope she found someone now who likes her for who she is!
I love how you get so excited, makes me feel like I'm listening to it for the first time again!
through her albums, and mainly ultraviolence, she talks so much abt toxic relationships and relationship abuse. a lot of people say that she’s basically romanticizing abusive relationships- but when you really listen and dissect her lyrics you can see it’s her point of view and that she’s not romanticizing but ignoring the fact that her relationship is toxic. and it’s obvious in her songs of her being heartbroken and trying to forget the relationship yet she can’t. she really has a way with her lyrics and how she makes it into music which is so amazing to me.
I can't wait to dive in further! Yeah I don't think she's glorifying these toxic relationships - you can hear the sadness and darkness in the music itself
In Carmen the girl she's talking bout is lana herself not someone else
She was a troubled teen with a drinking problem
And yes she got kinda famous with the song "video games" then she released the album "born to die"
i actually see carmen as a personification of drugs or more specifically coke
If you do Paradise and Ultraviolence, PLEASE make sure to listen to the bonus tracks: Burning Desire for Paradise, and Is This Happiness and Flipside for Ultraviolence.
Sidenote, Lizzy Grant a.k.a Lana del Ray is DEFINITELY worth it.
BURNING DESIRE IS SO GOOD
I personally think Dark Paradise is actually about a person you loved having died, she’s left remembering them and even when her friends tell her she needs to move on from the grief she denies it because even though the other person is dead, “when you find true love it lives on”
It's so dark when you listen to the lyrics closely isn't it?
it, as a matter of fact, was written about her best friend committing suicide. i dont remember what interview, but i know there was one where she explained.
I know I once commented about Florence in the back but somehow I missed Lianne omg your taste is immaculate
There's a lot of people talking about Ultraviolence, which I'm also excited about but chronologically, the next album (EP actually) is Paradise. It's an amazing project with some of her best songs.
Yeah I'm defo gonna do paradise next (I might tag on the btd deluxe stuff too if I find the time)
@@Luscent Nice
This is what makes us girls isn't actually the end/ outro track to this masterpiece of an album. The deluxe and the paradise edition gives the album a beautiful ending. You should react to it. You'll love it. This is what makes us girls is actually kind of like an interlude song to a whole different vibe.
Welcome to this journey.... can’t wait to watch more of Lana’s contents
I'm excited!!
Love your reaction ( and your accent 😊). Waiting for more Lana reactions.
YOU NEED TO HEAR LANA UNRELEASED ONES, THERE ARE HUNDREDS AND THEY ARE MIND-BLOWING WITH THEIR STORIES
Hundreds?!?
I've never seen any videos from you before, but I subscribed after the first couple songs - your analysis of the lyrics is like a deep dive in a really clearly articulated, intelligent way that you don't find much on RUclips!! I would LOVE to be friends with you. And I CANNOT wait until you hear NFR. The journey to that album will be worth it!!!
Aww thank you so much!! Honestly I'm so hyped to discover Lana with you guys!
I think Diet Mountain Dew represents America because it’s a classic American drink. It links to the theme of the song taking place in New York and the American dream and all that. I’ve also heard a theory that because it’s a soda it links to ‘you’re no good for me, but I want you’ - the soda represents something that’s bad for Lana but that she still craves.
And I think the addition of “diet” goes along with that. Because sometimes diet sodas still have a whole lot of sugar and bad stuff in them, but the word “diet” makes people think it’s better for them
I loved your reaction! I genuinely appreciate you digging into the lyrics ❤️
Love this reaction!! Can’t wait for the next reactions!
Btw you should check out the album Sirens when she was known as May Jailer, it’s amazing!
You have fantastic commentary can’t wait to see all your Lana reactions!
Thank you!!
From what I’ve seen of others interpretations, the story of the album is this;
Lana is in a toxic relationship with a man she’s obsessed with (born to die and off to the races), he then leaves her without a trace and gets involved with really seedy stuff with the mafia and money laundering (blue jeans). Lana reflects on the relationship (diet Mountain Dew, video games) and links the relationship to money and how it’s ruined her relationship (national anthem). National anthem is also about JFK and Marilyn Monroe, hinting that Lana’s boyfriend was cheating on her throughout the relationship. Lana hears the news that he has died as a result of his dangerous lifestyle (Dark Paradise), and after years she begins writing music and working through her grief, and gets into another relationship. (Radio) Fame is not as good as it seems, and she falls back into depression (the line ‘sweet like cinnamon’ has a double meaning, as cinnamon is bitter). Lana reflects on her life a girl that she knew when she was a teenager (Carmen).Lana’s new boyfriend, who is also rich and very toxic, breaks up with her and she’s left alone once again. (Million Dollar Man). Lana realised that every relationship she’s in is doomed to fail (linking to the title of the album - her relationships are born to die) and believes that she will never be happy. She looks back on all the men who have left her (Summertime Sadness) and how much she misses the innocence of her childhood (This Is What Makes Us Girls). She desperately wishes she could go back to her life before she got involved with these men. The bonus tracks also link to the story. ‘Without You’ is her reflecting on the million dollar man who left her, and ‘Lolita’ is another song about her reflecting on her innocence as a teenager. However the album ends on a high note with ‘Lucky Ones’ which is about a new relationship, except this one is successful and her boyfriend treats her well.
TLDR this album is about Lana grieving her dead boyfriend and missing her childhood, before eventually finding someone who treats her better than the rest :)
This is rediculously simplified. She is celebrating modern america while displaying a knowing cynicism. Title track the same for existentialist death embrace.
Just discovered your channel and I love your energy 💜 I’ve been a lana stan for almost a decade and I STRONGLY agree that you need to listen to them all in order. Her style has really changed a lot over the years and from album to album, so going in order let’s you really see how she’s grown! 💜
Yeahhh I'm super excited to witness the growth!
Agreed with every word!!!
i loved this. i smiled crazy just seeing how much u were enjoying the music ahhhhhhhh🥰❤️❤️❤️
Aww I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Can’t wait
I think the metaphor of Diet Mountain Dew: When she says 'you're no good for me, but I want you', refers to how she feels about the drink and her partner 😋
Loved this reaction and how you steadily got more hyped as the album went on :P I love Diet Mountain Dew and how addicted and ironic it is, like 'you're no good... Do you think we'll be in love forever?'
It also feels so pacy/road trippy and like she is losing track and all she can remember is these little images/moments and the feeling something is wrong
Yeahhh I totally get that vibe! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I LOVE your energy. This review made me smile so much, you made me feel like I was re-experiencing the album for the first time. I am so jealous because I remember buying the album right when it came out and no skipped tracks ❤
To me this is the best album of Lana. So perfect from start to end. My ultimate favorite of hers is THIS IS WHAT MAKES US GIRLS, it’s her best work everrrrr, the production, story line, melody, progression, the bridge, the end... PERFECT 💕💕💕 it’s in my Top 3 fave songs of all times, I just love itttt
Totally agree
How have you not delved deep into Lana until now?! She’s soooooo good ☺️ but I wholeheartedly agree with you doing the albums in order! I’m so excited for the future videos and reviews :)
I know!! I'm kinda glad I didn't though cos now I get to experience them with you lot!!
This album is one of my favs, brings me so many memories.❤️ Can't wait for NFR.
Your analyzation is just so perfect
Omg I loved how you sang along with Lana on the outro of summertime sadness. You sound beautiful. Please I'm in love hahah.
I've actually got a new demo going up on the channel today! 😁

I can hardly wait for your to listen to Ultraviolence and Honeymoon!! Your videos are so wonderful! This made my day :)
Aww thank you! I'm so excited to hear them!
My favourite Lana album! It’s so dark and full of hip hop I love it. My money’s on Ultraviolence, Honeymoon or NFR being your favourite
your reactions are so pure omg
Aw thanks 😁
Loved your reaction! :) keep it up!
Thank you!
Can’t wait for you to react to ultraviolence and nfr, my two fav
im screaming how have you not heard it until now
I know I'm a terrible person
Hey! Nice to see a fellow slipknot/Lana fan
Favourite song of all time.
Summertime Sadness. Ask it anytime, literally anytime
I HIGHLY recommend reacting to some of her unreleased songs. They are her best songs in my opinion; "I Talk To Jesus," "Cherry Blossom," and "Take Me to Paris" are my favorites but they are all so good. Try going on soundcloud and going through a lana unreleased playlist, there are a lot of songs and they are very diverse. The self-titled album is just some of her unreleased songs that she had released but they took it down so she could have like a blank slate or something with born to die.
Ahh that makes sense! I'll make sure to look them up!
Oh my god I can’t believe I’m watching this like really this is brilliant omg
Aw thanks!
Cinnamon is something that we associate with a lot of sweet foods but cinnamon itself is actually bitter so I wonder what the symbolism is trying to say
And this too awesome interpretation!!!
Especially considering the song Cinnamon Girl on NFR! (Which is beautiful and heart breaking)
king! loved it!
Love this!
Thank youuu
Yes, in order is the right way. Good call :)
I'm glad I did it first in the end!
Love your reaction !!!!
Thank you!!
Honeymoon, it's my favourite, such a masterpiece !
I just found out about this channel and honestly... MAN! UR SO AWESOMEEEEE !
Aw thanks! ☺️
you need to do the deluxe editions!!
all i can say is i can’t wait for you to hear paradise! it’s almost like a b side to born to die. the song “yayo” was originally on her self titled album and kinda represents her older lizzie grant jazz club style of singing
Jump is iconic
Can t wait for Ultraviolence, it s my favourite album !! I love hour reaction btw ❤️
Aw thank you!! Yeah a whole bunch of people seem to really love that one I'm looking forward to it!!
carmen is actually about her, she commented on the mv that she struggled with alcholism at 14-15 i think. She was then sent to a board school and then did charity work and started singing at lil pubs and bars. Also she was living in a trailer park back then. It's really interesting cause her discography actually showcases so well her mindset, even tho some álbum songs are actually songs that were meant to be on other albums or recorded in the same sessions etc. My fav are NFR! ultraviolence and honeymoon!! can't really choose
Wow thanks for the info that reveals a lot!!
I'm super hyped to hear the rest of her discography!!
I'm super hyped to hear the rest of her discography!!
@@Luscent loved your insight as well🙏
Ultraviolence it's actually quite different, it's more like an alternative/indie genre. And of course it's darker than BTD. Ultraviolence was recorded in just ONE take and one of its song was recorded freestyled, she just sang what she wanted to.
sh*t- how am I just finding out about thissss
which song is the freestyle one?
@@rosie2719 I think It was - pretty when you cry
It was also recoded straight in to a hand microphone with no filter, so she also gave us raw vocals.
YOU WERE SOOOO RIGHT WHEN YOU SAID IT LOOKS LIKE A POEM!!!!! Lana is first a poet, then second a singer.
iconic reaction/review
I absolutely love this album, Blue Jeans was the song that got me into Lana and the one I relate to the most, that's why it's my favorite song off the album
you should do the deluxe version of BTD, and then Paradise :D
Please do the Paradise EP! Then Ultraviolence!
i PROMISE the self titled og lizzy album is amazing and worth listening to but i think it should be last bc it’s amazing hearing all of what she’s done in her career and then going back and listening to her very beginning
HI! New follower here, excellent reactions to our queen! And I don't know if someone has already said in the comments that Dark Paradise is about her grandma (she wrote it when she passed away)... it hit me hard when I found out! Haha kisses from Argentina
I love this video😭 you are so cuteeee
Aw thanks haha
A few important things about Lana: she has stated many times that she writes for herself and she aims to make her life art. It is also important to note she has had issues with alcohol (when she was young) and references it often in her music (she has been clean for a long time now 😌). She is deeply spiritual. She also can never be explained - she is just free. One of my favorite people in the planet
Wow I can sense that depth and mystery in her writing so powerful
You have to listen to the Paradise EP next (Which is kinda like the deluxe version of Born To Die)
Yeahh I'm excited for it!!
To me, this is, along with Honeymoon and NFR, her best album (the Paradise edition, bonus tracks included). The production is insane !
I'm defo excited for doing Honeymoon next!!
i think she sings about herself in Carmen
Carmen and This is what makes us girls are song she wrote about her struggles with alcoholism. Her parents sent her to rehab at a very young age. That’s why in this is what makes us girls she wrote the lyric “I got sent away I was waving on the train platform crying cause I know I’m never coming back”. I love this album. It was what got me obsessed. Ultraviolence is my fav. But this one is very nostalgic for me. Been a fan since 2012. I saw her live in Houston TX in 2018. Such a magical night
Wow all I'm hearing about her childhood sounds awful! I'm excited for Ultraviolence a lot of people have said it's their fave!
Diet Mountain Dew, Dark Paradise and Born to Die are my fav
By the way, listen to the deluxe version of this album. You’re missing the songs without you, Lolita and lucky ones
Without you is SOOOOOOO good
Looking forward to Paradise and others!
Me too!!
Subscribed for the rest of her albums :)
Yay thanks ☺️🎉
This album is a masterpiece ❤️❤️
I'm just waiting for your reaction for Lust for Life's concept, metaphors & lyricism !!
I'm excited to hear it!
Loved this reaction! If you're interested Lana in addition to her music has her own poetry book that has an audio version with music and a physical/digital version with photos she has taken herself. The book supports charity too! It is called Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass. Also a new studio album is coming July 4th!
Ooh that sounds good I'll look it up!
This album makes me miss the OG music videos from RUclips
“So good I can’t even cope”..
Literally me every single time I listen to her 🥺🥺🥺
love
Born to Die is my favorite, always in the mood for this one. The other albums I enjoy but find myself needing to be in the mood for those.
Yeah fair me too I think
please react to the 3 deluxe edition tracks from born to die when you react to the 9 paradise songs!
Wait till you listen deluxe and paradise omg
So in Blue Jeans the guy left, to follow his dream (his success) leaving her with a broken heart. But in Radio the opposite happened, she found success, she was the successful one of the pair; the ‘how do you like me now’ reflects that now he sees her as valuable. That’s my take
Ahh nice I like that interpretation!
You should watch Lana song Million Dollar Man live she is sooooo amazing live!!!
Ooooh I'll have to look it up!
I LOOOOVE THE VINIL OF JOANNE ON BACKGROUND
💕🤠 I need to get more!!
This albums is a comfort zone in all Lana's discography. My personal favorite is dark paradise, I think is so dark and deep, it's actually first time we are allowed to enter Lana's mind. I think till NFR came, this is no doubt the most listenned album because it has the most anthems of her discography, you know iconic songs like, Born to die, Blue jeans, Video games, National anthem, very poppy songs.
Yeah it's a very listenable album I've had National Anthem on repeat all month
@@Luscent You should really listen the deluxe extra songs, Without You destroys me and makes me so happy at the same time
