Al's design is what I recall worthy of the label, "elegantly simple. It is easy to follow, offering not only 'steps to build steps' if you'll excuse the expression, but also a practical and economical way build or to fix a 'simple' object. Factors of trig, math, shapes, force, etc, are made clear by way of his examples. Excellent teacher.

Thanks for making the hard stuff I learned in high school (and promptly forgot) easy! It all comes back now. I’m surprised that a practical application happens to be the staircase project I have been planning!

AeroDinosaur, Glad to hear my video and simple trig approach worked out for you. Appreciate your thoughtful comment!

Hey Al Bacon. I watched the video over many times. In the video (12:55) you have your starting space next to the newel at 3.047. Then your spacing jumps to 3.75” until the last space where it goes back to 3.047. I’m wondering how to calculate this so my spaces are consistent throughout the whole rake wall. I hope this makes sense. Thanks

      Mason,
As I explained in my video (9:30 to 12:42), this is exactly the horizontal spacing I planned for (i.e., 3.75 inches between each of my 12 metal balusters; 3.047 inches between my group of metal balusters and newel on the left; and 3.047 inches between my group of metal balusters and staircase wall on the right.) The graphic at 12:42 clearly shows how I calculated the two 3.047 inch outside gaps.
If you are not sure how to do this calculation or perform a calculation where all spaces are equal, I will gladly help. In other words, we could exchange email addresses and phone numbers and go over your numbers. I would also need to see some pictures of your stairwell.

Are the outside of the first and twelfth baluster spacing also 5 9/16 spacing after calculating the Final Trig Calculation?

      Ricwi11i,
Please review 11:39 to 16:00 showing how I made my calculations.
Baluster Distances are shown at 12:56. The outside horizontal distance at the edges is 3.047 inches.
I also centered my drilling pattern at 15:08. To keep the video shorter, I didn’t show this numerical distance. However, if you do the Trig Math, you’ll find out that this outside distance on top of the knee wall is 3 31/32 of an inch.
