I am a home renovation junky and Project Manager with over $400m in industrial, commercial & residential projects completed - this video was insanely helpful! Well done!
Dude, that was seriously one of the best DIY videos I've seen on RUclips. You're a great speaker and a provided some really helpful tips. I also really appreciate the fact that you take the time to answer questions in the comment section. I look forward to checking out some more of your videos. Keep up the good work.
John thank you so much for your comment! Sorry it took a while to respond to you! I haven’t uploaded a video in a while, but I will get back to taking more footage of my work here very soon! Thank you for the motivation! Have a blessed day 😎
This was an insanely easy tip! I used the boot on the bottom and top of the rails, so I was able to drive a screw in the top as well. These things are solid. Super quick install; no messing around with epoxy. Thanks, Hunter!
You are welcome! Glad to help! I really like the design with boots at the top of the balusters as well! Thank you so much for your time and comment! Have a great day!
I’m usually not one to comment on a video but this video is great. I am just an average guy that has a wife that looks at Pinterest and decided to replace our spindles. Never done it before a day of my life but this by far was the easiest way to install them. Once again thanks for your video and thanks for the response when I had a question!
Hey Chris! You have no idea how much I appreciate your comment! So happy and thankful I was able to help get a project done! If there are questions outside of my videos, please don’t hesitate to ask! I’ll be honest when I don’t have an answer...have a blessed evening/day when you read this...Talk with you later!
Thank you so much for your videos they are so helpful. I used your stair rail video to do my rail and wouldn't have had the confidence to do it myself with good result if it wasn’t for your video. You deserve many many more subscribers!
Fantastic video, I'm a stain and paint finisher and have a first time baluster install. I've finished hundreds of stairs but first time doing the iron so thanks. Altho I've always preferred finishing wood b4 iron install.
Hunter -- you rock!!! Thanks for taking the time to video & explain -- I re-did our staircase yesterday -- amazing. The lift the blister and use drywall screws was perfect -- Thank You!!!!
Thanks so much for this. Some cheat of a repairman was trying to charge me $2K to replace my balusters and newell post. This solves a huge part of my problem.
Awesome! Thank you for watching and spending time on the channel! Please get back to me with any questions or at least let me know how it goes! Have a blessed day 😎
Super simple and very effective. I have watched other videos and they have over complicated it. Your working efficiently and delivering a quality product. Thanks for producing this for us nobs!
You’re the man! I’m replacing my Mom’s wood balusters with some depot iron. I woke up at 3am stressing about not being able to figure this out and having to let the old lady down (I’ve watched like 8 hours of videos, I really didn’t wanna use glue because I knew I’d mess up multiple times) and then I ran across your video. I got pumped up and ran to the store for 6am opening. Got my first baluster up after about an hour lol I discovered I have a new problem now... I don’t have a flat table to use so I can’t figure out how to clamp the baluster down to cut it with my recip saw. I ended up standing on it and cutting it off my Mom’s deck.. Dangerous, but got the job done. If you have any makeshift clamping ideas I’d appreciate a plug! Also, I used to sell structural screws for a company named FastenMaster, we also had this sweet industrial hot glue gun called PAMFast. I believe you’re a finish guy, I bet you’d like it (only buy the yellow glue though, much stronger on wood to wood).
I completely understand! Unfortunately these "track" home builders stick to tight schedules and require me to have the rail finished on 1st trim. The painters are at least use to it on these DR Horton projects. I don't enough time to make an additional trip back to the house to complete the balusters after paint is finished. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day 😎
I completely agree with you! D R Horton does there schedule different ways that don’t make sense! It really sucks for you to do your job to mask all that off! It really makes no difference to me because I have to come back to finish base, install hardware...Thank you for your time and comment! Hope you have a blessed day! Any questions in the future let me know...
Oh I hear ya! But that’s the way they just insist on doing it...I guess every home builder has a few things done differently, but in regards to just the painters they do have to waste a bunch of tape!
Right! The glue and epoxy caused so many warranty issues for my business…the screw method took all those headaches away! Thanks for your support! Have a blessed day 😎
This is so smart! I'm going to be doing my stairs sometime this week (going from carpet to hardwood) and this method seems so much more efficient and easier than other methods. I might even be able reuse my current plowed handrail if I'm securing to the treads via a screw. Might even try to screw the top of the spindle to the handrail and cover it with the other boot. So cool
Appreciate your input! Great idea on adding a boot to the top as well, definitely adds some additional detail to the rail! Hope you are successful with your project! Have a blessed day 😎
Man thank you for this video. I literally just counted mine and in total I only have 26. Only thing i have to do is drill all mine out cause the wood one’s on there now are just nailed in. And appreciate that great trick with the Sheetrock screw. It’s the little things that count the most.
You are very welcome! Thanks for taking the time to comment! Make sure to drill about 1 1/2” down so you can slide the baluster down into the hole and then slide up into the handrail hole for securing...if you have any additional questions I’m here to help! Have a blessed day!
@@huntercarlson5446 used the screw idea VERY successfully today ty🙏🙏🙏 Wanna drop a few helpful tips for your viewers if that's okay 1. When cutting your balusters on steps the first one will be shorter than the next by 4 inches or so because the railing is going higher at the back of the step 2. Trying to measure balusters with double baskets can be tough to get an accurate measurement because the features dont let the tape sit flat. If you know you are cutting off 6 or 10 inches each time, just measure that from the bottom of the baluster. It's easier to be accurate. 3. Definitely use screws. They worked so well
Awesome! 😎 Thank you for following up and sharing your quick tips after using my technique to secure the balusters! Great idea on measuring the basket balusters from the bottom! Also great tip on installing the balusters on stairs! Usually there will be 2 or 3 balusters per stair and you are exactly right, about 4 inches added to each baluster working your way back on each stair! Thank you very much for following up and adding great content to the channel through the comments! LOVE the hints from you! Any questions in the future don’t hesitate...have a blessed day!

I do mine the same way, 1/2" at the top and 11/16 on the bottom. I put Lexel clear in the top holes though, this stops the tops of the balusters from rattling if the oak rail would shrink. Ive seen guys take the rail apart, install the balusters and then put the top rail back on. Which is insane unless I get paid a hell of a lot more!
Thank you so much for all the comments on this and other videos of mine! I really appreciate your time watching and then commenting on your tricks that make it work for you! Glad to hear you do things almost the same way! Hope you have a blessed day 😎
Great video! Thanks for explaining everything so clearly. This is so helpful. One question...am I the only one that noticed the bag downstairs move by itself @ 12:26? A little creeped out! Lol
I do stairs for a living and about the same age. I do the same thing with the screws but always glue the tops, probably not needed but i just always have. I only use a #8 3/4" screw though, like a hinge screw. I use a 7¼ dewalt miter saw with a metal blade, cuts iron like butter. But ill cut 4 at a time with a jig like you For the caps i have a Milwaukee battery ratchet with a t10 bit. That thing is a gamechanger for me. Ill never go back to an allen wrench lol ill use a piece of lattice and push it against the shoes like a straight edge then tighten them

Nice ,good. Best video in youtube,,,i am ready to do a full wood raillings whit a metal balusters, I will do the way you say,, honestly your video help me alot,,, all the best for you and family... god bless you......👌👌🙏🙏
Thank you very much! I totally understand your shock on having the wood finished prior! Really it only affects the painter for the job...a lot more work masking off all the iron! Sometimes when I’m installing I might scratch the wood on accident so installing the iron before is easier for me to sand the mistake. This is how DR Horton does their schedule...if it was my home I would install after paint or stain and be extra careful 😉
I just finished a stairway with railing like this today, so the question comes to mind, was it just a preference thing, or why did you not wait until the staining was done to put the spindles in? Even if you’re worried about scratching the stain, it’d be easier to go back afterwards and touch up the stain than to tape up all those shoes pre-staining. That’s my opinion. I’m curious to know your reasoning. Great work!
Try it out and let me know if you have any questions! I have a bunch of descriptive responses in other comments…might help! I’ll also have another rail/ iron baluster install coming in a few weeks… Have a blessed day 😎
Thanks for the great tips. I just wanted to verify that I am supposed to be inserting the screw at an angle through the metal and into the wood? Any chance you can share a close up pic of the base of the baluster with the screw installed?
So sorry I haven’t responded in a long while! Was camping for 2 weeks and don’t have service...insert the screw at an angle next to the baluster so when the round head of the screw passes the flat part of the baluster it pinches the baluster to the wood...unfortunately I don’t have a picture to show you right now...the next chance I get installing iron balusters I will take another video and pictures! I also have some very lengthy responses to comments on this video that would help! Summer please don’t hesitate to ask another question! I will get back to you much faster this time! Have a blessed day!
Thanks, Hunter, for explaining and making it easy for females to understand the process. I will definitely try before calling the professionals for help, lol.
Great video and explanation! Beautiful work. I hope you can help me.. we are installing a shoe on top of the spindle however when I tighten the Alan wrench, the shoe tilts. Do you have a solution? Thank you for your time!
Thank you so much for the compliment! I sometimes have the same issue with installing “boots” on the top of the baluster touching the handrail... my only advice that I can give you is to hold the boot super tight to the top and tighten the Alan screw...it will tilt just a bit unfortunately, don’t know if it’s the boot or what...in the past I’ve had about a 1/8” gap on 1 side of the boot with the other side touching snug to the handrail... This is just a guess...haven’t tried it myself... you know how there is additional space that the boot leaves around the baluster, try wedging a flat head screw driver (maybe tape the end first so it doesn’t scratch) and while you are holding the boot tight to the handrail with the screw driver wedged between baluster and boot on the Alan screw side, then tighten the screw. I’m hoping with the additional friction it will help keep that boot in place. I really hope this helps! Sorry I don’t have a clear cut solution for you right now! Get back to me if you have more questions! Have a blessed day!
I really appreciate that! That’s been a great show for years! Lots of good “tricks of the trade” come from that show...hopefully I can just add my part to all the information out there to help someone gain confidence in starting a project...Thank you for your time, have a blessed day!
Your welcome! A lot of good information in the comments if your need some extra help! Or let me know your situation and I’m happy to help as well! Thanks for watching! Hope I was able to bring you one step closer to doing it on your own! Have a blessed day 😎
Drill about 1 1/2” - 2” at the bottom. About 1” at the top for the nub of the baluster, or measure how long the nub is at the top of your baluster and drill a little more than that measurement. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! Have a blessed day 😎
I've always epoxied them in. They never loosen up. The screw trick is definitely faster, but wondering if it will stay tight as long as epoxing them in?

Let me know if you run into any issues! Have a blessed day!
@@huntercarlson5446 Will do. BTW, I just subscribed from 🇨🇦
Love it! Thank you very much for your support!
Nice video, Hunter. They could use you on 'This Old House'.
I really appreciate that! That’s been a great show for years! Lots of good “tricks of the trade” come from that show...hopefully I can just add my part to all the information out there to help someone gain confidence in starting a project...Thank you for your time, have a blessed day!
Great video and advice!
Do you have video of how you installed the post ??
Thank you! Can’t wait to do mine!
Your welcome! A lot of good information in the comments if your need some extra help! Or let me know your situation and I’m happy to help as well! Thanks for watching! Hope I was able to bring you one step closer to doing it on your own! Have a blessed day 😎
You mentioned cut the spindle one and half inch longer than the height, but what depth do you drill into the hand rail and the bottom ? 🤔 👍🏴
Drill about 1 1/2” - 2” at the bottom. About 1” at the top for the nub of the baluster, or measure how long the nub is at the top of your baluster and drill a little more than that measurement. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! Have a blessed day 😎
@@huntercarlson5446 Cheers 👍🙂
For the upstairs post, what height is visually pleasing, from top to bottom, including cap too.
I've always epoxied them in. They never loosen up. The screw trick is definitely faster, but wondering if it will stay tight as long as epoxing them in?
