I was surprised how challenging Professor Frink's Simpsons History was to put together! There was a temptation to just turn the video into one long list of his inventions or scientific reports, since that's what the large majority of his cutaway joke appearances are. Tried to put a little more emphasis on the personality spotlight moments, although it resulted in a pretty long "Al Jean Era" section.
(Next time we need a candidate who peaked in the early years) 😛

An idea for a character history could be marges mum, she’s this weird character that’s never really seen that much in the present obviously, but she’s so intriguing as a flash back character as she clearly messed up Marge in a few ways. Her advice she gave to Marge (in which Marge gives to Lisa for a second before taking it back) in moaning Lisa comes to mind. Where she actively tells Marge not be sad “to show what a good mother she has.” And it’s not the only time she’s been seen giving advice like that to my knowledge at least

We had just started learning about 3-D shapes in school, and I could not draw a cube for the life of me. I love Frink because he reminds me of the really nerdy people in my advanced classes in high school who got As, understood the material, and worked on very ambitious projects. Frink represents the overly intellectual nerd that Lisa or Martin represent but as the adult in Simpsons World. Besides the students that Homer befriends in the episode of him going to college, there are very few outwardly nerdy adult characters and fewer characters who aren't one-offs. Martin's dad may be one. And Allison's dad in Lisa's Rival. But they're portrayed as being more snobby than intellectual. And we have Comic Book Guy for that.

He's been around since like season 1 or 2 but the most he's ever done for a main plot was getting shot by Mr Smithers in his fake leg and being frozen in Apu's freezer

I'd like to nominate The Sea Captain for the next Simps Hist. Mostly cause you called him 'obscure' yet in my mind he's one of the bigger secondary characters. Granted I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of all 30+ seasons of Simps-age, but I'd still find his history interesting.

  • @uneek35

I love early Professor Frink because of his misanthropy. Whenever he showed up, he would do the wacky scientist shtick, but then sometimes makes some dark or threatening comment at the end. I got the sense that he's basically a Herman type who's geeky appearance and voice keeps people from taking him seriously. I haven't seen the newer episodes, but it seems like they softened him up by making him the loser that he appears to be, which is a shame.
As for a nomination, I like the idea of a Maggie episode. Wanna see how much personality you can gather from a baby.

Seems clear Frink wound up with a load of unseelable home security systems since he was giving them out for free in the backs of Bakini Bottom magazines. I guess they wouldn't ignite under water but I'm certain Squidward still regrets ordering one during his Sunday community service obligations.

When you got to the point where you were analyzing the depressing side of Frink's life, my immediate thought was, "Huh, so he's like Gladstone Gander?" A character that appears to be, and is, one type, in Frink's case a well educated scientist, but on the surface is much lonelier than they really let on, so they just kind of bury themselves in this one trait they have, Frink with Science, Gladstone with his luck.
I'll admit, the comparison isn't totally apt, but that is where my immediate thought went. Maybe I just got to tie everything back into Duck Comics, I dunno.

Oh man, feels like the end of an era for me, I've been rooting for a Frink spotlight since this series started!
I was hoping to learn he had a little more positive development later on, the lonely scientist feels like a stereotype that's worn out, but I just always love to see the guy. Whatever quick gag he goes for is almost always funny to me, glad to see him finally get here.
Well, damn, who do I root for now? It's funny you mentioned Shelbyville, because I was actually thinking a Histories style episode on the whole town could be really cool. Yeah, guess that's it, would love to see a Shelbyville deep dive.

I am once again politely asking for a Moe Syzslak Simpsons history. Arguably right up there with Skinner and Mr. Burns as “as close as you can get to main characters without being part of the Simpsons fam”

    • @danielshaffer-green5684
      @danielshaffer-green5684 2 года назад

Moe reminds me a whole lot of Mr. Reese from Clarence; both are cantankerous, both have a bleakly negative view of the world, and both display some behaviors that are...unsettling, to say the least. But above all, both of these characters are lonely, and a lot of their troubling behaviors come from how desperate they are for human connection. They legitimately want to have friends, but lack the social skills needed to form healthy relationships, which is probably why they're so curmudgeonly.
However, whenever they do have positive interactions with others, they become much more good-natured. While their ways of being in the world are often extremely off-putting, more than anything they're just depressed because they're unable to connect with others.

Another thing that you will notice is that Professor Frink's clothing used to be drawn all squiggly, to imply that his clothing is rumpled and untidy.
To save money and streamline his model for overseas animation all of Frink's rumbles were straightened out later, but they do occasionally make a comeback, when they have enough time to give a note on it. This aspect of his design makes him unique from any other character.

As an old sci fi nerd specifically (and a nerd in general lol) i absolutely love how referential and meta Prof. Frink is tbh. He's one of my favorite secondary characters.
And yes, please do a history of Rainer Wolfcastle. I think there's a really interesting history there with the way the he started out as just a Schwarzenegger/ all 80s action movies parody when we watched the show in the 90s and now how some of that is lost on younger audiences because of just the show being on so long.
