- It's just another chapter in the pointless rivalry between Springfield and Shelbyville. They built a mini-mall, so we built a bigger mini-mall. They made the world’s largest pizza, so we burned down their city hall.

New theory: Shelbyville's residents age in real time (like the rest of the world) and Springfield residents stay frozen in time. When he was younger, Homer donated his sperm in Shelbyville and biologically fathered many children. Those children grew up, while Springfield stayed the same age.
Therefore, in Act 3 of "Lemon of Troy," Homer confronts his Shelbyville son and grandson.
(Actually, maybe a lot of people in Springfield went to that Shelbyville Fertility Clinic...) 🤔
or Shelbyville is some Twilight Zone projection about everything Springfield hates about itself.
Makes me wonder:
How often did the Simpsons leave Springfield in general, and which city did they visit the most often?
And are there any other major fictional cities in the show (iE not New York or Tokyo etc)

The only thing I remember about Shelbyville is that Milhouse's mother is from Shelbyville and knowing the reasoning behind why Shelbyville was created is because Shelbyville Manhattan wanted to build a town where marrying your cousin was allowed. Which contribute into the whole Milhouse's parents being related theory.

I like the fact that the people of Shelbyville take great pride in the fact that they beat Springfield in football nearly half the time. You've got to respect that 'glass almost half full' attitude.
Also considering springfield most of the time sucks it's interesting seeing how another city sees them as a big rival to beat

This is something I don't think I ever noticed until it was highlighted in Patrick H Willems' video.
I've always absolutely LOVED that joke. "nearly half the time" which means less than half. So they're bragging that they lose more than they win.
I think a Simpsons History on Santa’s Little Helper would be really interesting. He’s an integral part of the show - literally there since day (season) 1 - yet even as the most focused on Simpsons pet, I feel like he’s never really had his due.
santas lil helper has loadssss of episodes about him (whether spotlights, b plots or other things revolving around him), more than a lot of the human denizens of springfield
I think an episode about all their pets (Snowball, the lobster, the pet hamster from Duffless....) would be interesting as well

He did get a thorough spotlight episode at the end of Season 31.
“This whole raid was a useless as that yellow lemon shaped rock over there. Wait a minute. There’s a lemon behind that rock!” Is my favorite line in the entire show. It always makes me laugh and It happens in Shelbyville.
Arguably the best screw the audience jokes after "I'm not tired, I'm not tired at all", IMO.
As someone from a suburban burg, these rivalries do exist and they really are weird
It's so odd to look back on the way we all gossiped and bad mouthed a town we all spent insane amounts of time in because they were the only ones with a movie theater
Oh it was very funny for me because the suburb that I grew up in had a school district rivalry with the neighboring suburb, but thanks to the way that school district lines were drawn, I actually wasn't in the school district named for my hometown but rather the next-door one, and so that's what I had allegiance to. Any time I told someone where I lived I would say "yeah I live in x suburb but don't worry It's close to the border with y suburb so basically, I live there haha I'm not one of those rich snobs from x suburb".
Same here with neighbourhoods, if you lived beyond a line dividing them you could be either friend or foe no matter how you were, it only mattered where you lived
I met someone in college that tried to start a fight with someone who went to a rival high school and we had to explain that it’s crazy to start random fights in a mall over a high school rivalry

Personally I find them hilarious. Here in the uk there’s a pretty tense rivalry between Manchester and Liverpool that goes back 150+ years 😂
This wouldn't be a Simpsons History as much as a Simpsons Meta History but I think it'd be interesting to have a video all about the show's status quo changes over the years, from Maude Flanders' death to Lisa's vegetarianism and Buddhism, for a show criticised for never changing it'd be interesting to look at all the actual changes and maybe there are more than people realise

It’s not really a history, but I’d love to see a video discussion on Marge’s lack of friends. You’ve done videos on Homer’s and Ned’s friendship & on the friends Lisa and Bart have made, but I think there’s potential in questioning why the show never gave Marge any real friends aside from Ruth Powers.
Sounds like an interesting and incredibly depressing episode. Marge seemed to have an active social life back in high school: did she lose all her friends by dating and marrying Homer? She tried to reconnect with her friend at the country club with poor results, got kicked out of the investorettes and once loudly proclaimed that Maggie will be her friend.
It's a bit strange that the Simpsons ladies are generally depicted as not really having friends. Like even Maggie doesn't really have a friend in most episodes

Oh yeah, that would be great, I actually just wanted to write a similar comment as yours and suggest a "Marge - The Friend Count" video similar to Bart’s and Lisa’s.
It’s actually really pretty sad how Marge doesn’t have (or had?) much of a stable social circle in her life outside her family, despite being such a kind, helpful, creative and all around great person (I remember her saying "I haven’t had a friend in years" in Days of Wine and D'oh'ses, and thinking that’s pretty sad, but also kinda meta like "oh, we haven’t had a 'Marge gets a friend' episode in years").
Maybe that’s what makes episode like "Marge on the Lam" (We need more Ruth Powers!) or "Scenes from the Class Struggle in Springfield" feel even more poignant, relatable and bittersweet.
But I think a video as such would have a lot to explore:
In later seasons Marge fortunately seems to pretty good friends with the others moms like Luann, Sarah, Bernice aso. (e.g. Watching "Tunnelton" together, getting drunk and having fun… definitely a pretty different dynamic than she had with the Investorettes);
her and Helen certainly have an interesting relationship going on, sometimes being enemies/kinda friends/frenemies?
I like how she befriended Smithers in "The Last Traction Hero" and judging by other interactions of them like in "The Girl Code" or "Portrait of a Lackey on Fire" these two get along very well.
Would Marge call some of Homer’s friends also her friends? How does she feel about Moe/Lenny/Carl/Barney?
And Ned and her certainly had their special moments throughout the years…
there’s really a lot you could talk about re:Marge & friends!
P.S.: Maybe a Marge/Homer Friend Count comparison as Bart/Lisa had wouldn’t be as beneficial, but it would certainly be interesting to see how Marge’s relationship to and marriage with Homer robbed her of chances of having friends or being accepted in friend groups (a lot of what he see in e.g. "Marge on the Lam" or "The Last of the Red Hat Mamas"),
but then we also have them throwing parties together for other couples as in e.g. "A Milhouse Divided" and Homer behaving as good as he could - would she and the Flanderseseses/van Houtens/Hibberts/Lovejoys call each other friends?
The thing is that Marge often naturally gets along great with other people and feels a connection (whether it’s the other female inmates in "Marge in Chains" or I recently quite liked "Marge the Lumberjill" and her relationship with Paula), but similar to Lisa, the show doesn’t often let her keep friends.)

They should do a Shelbyville sequel where the kids/Homer lookalike from Lemon of Troy are trying to retrieve something from Springfield, and play it from their perspective this time.
I've been wanted a deep dive on Cletus Spuckler on this channel. He shows up so often with his improbable home life as a single line joke, it must have built up quite a bit of lore.
There have been a few Cletus centric episodes too. I think almost all of them are from the HD seasons.
Cletus is really interesting, because he comes off as a bit gimmicky, but actually has a surprising amount of depth to his character.

The spucklers are an interesting group of characters, I like any story with them

I'd actually love to see a deep dive on Dolph Jimbo & Kearney. Going back to season 1 It was actually quite weird to see how much screentime they got on their first outing.
Also their age is very ambiguous. They always seemed like teenagers but apparently are only in grade 6? They attend Elementary school still despite Kearney having a son (though we can assume he’s been held back a few years)
Didn't they switch voices early on, too?
@@AllG98 I don't know if its the case for Springfield Elementary, but there are some places where there is no middle school, so 7th and 8th grade are still in elementary school.

I actually think Kearney would be a good candidate for Simpsons Mysteries. Kid is divorced, has a teenaged son, is on the church council, originally went to school with Otto, but is a teenager himself and is still somehow in Elementary School. He may actually have the most messed up timeline on the show, even including Mr Burns.
Not a city suggestion, but another location that I think would be cool to do a Simpson's histories on is King Toot's music store. I like that even though there were only a couple of episodes where it was relevant, they were always consistent with it being located near Moe's.
It also weirdly has come back into the spotlight since they added the new King Toot.
Springfield's geography has never been consistent (remember when the power plant was right next door to the Simpsons house for one joke?) and yet King Toot's is so consistently next to Moe's.

Agreed. I would love an episode on all the awesomely named stores, for example bloodbath and beyond and the air conditioner store "it blows".

From the elementary school cast, I think a look at Mr Largo would be interesting; he seems to pop up out of place whenever they need someone's day to be ruined in a bizarre way, and he has a certain poshness to him that most similar characters lack.

Mr. Largo seems to be to only gay character in Springfield who is still in the closet at least in his own mind ( Everyone else seems to realise, and not even care).
I’d be interested in seeing a Simpsons Histories on Bart’s various girlfriends. The show has done plenty of Bart relationship stories, so I feel it’d be a topic worth covering. Perhaps comparing and contrasting them, what worked with each and what didn’t (and even judging compatibility).

As controversial at sounds, I really want a Simpsons Histories on Apu. He has such a unique role in the show in the sense that he can be paired with almost anyone and has had multiple status quo changes. He's also unique in the sense that he's not relavent anymore not because he died or his actor died, but due to... shall we say unfortunate circumstances. He's such a great and funny character and I would love to see his evolution throughout the show.
I think Jim's been reluctant to cover Apu given he'd have to take a stand on the contentious "is he racist?" debate

Shelbyville would be an excellent location for a treehouse of horror story. The mild mystery, creepy lineage, and bizaroland of pseudo doplegängers would make it a interesting choice.

Great video as always! I‘ve often wondered where Aristotle Amadopolis went to and why he kinda ceased to exist, but I never noticed that it wasn’t just him, but sort of all of Shelbyville was way less featured in later seasons, very interesting…
(I think he got also pretty much replaced by the Rich Texan, but I feel as an oil magnate he represents a different kind of stereotype/archetype than Burns or Amadopolis, and he and Burns don’t really have the same friendly rivalry that Burns and Ari had (tho I like e.g. "The Seemingly Never-Ending Story" a lot, but Burns/Ari had more of a friendship and parallels between each other in e.g. "Homer Defined" or "Homer at the bat". In one Comic story where they wage a tank war against each other Ari even has a Smithers-lookalike as an assistant, so there’s even more Shelbyville doppelgänger.))

Up until I read this comment, I never realized how prominent they are.
funny story: my city used to be two cities that have merged into one over time. As a result, there is a lighthearted rivalry between the two sides of town and they've always felt like bizzaroworld versions of each other. The merge was long enough ago that only our older residents could remember it, but recent enough that the architecture and stuff feel just different enough to be noticeable. Because of this 'bizzar reflection' feeling of it, I know a lot of people on my side of town, including my entire family, that refer to the other side as "Shelbyville".
I wonder if they call us that too?

One of my favorite underrated jokes in the show is the Shelbyvillian who says "Sounds like Springfield’s got a discipline problem. Maybe that’s why we beat them at football nearly half the time!"
I don't know if this was the result of watching episodes out of order via reruns or what, but I think the brilliance of Shelbyville is that it always sounded like it was superior to Springfield to me. Characters talked about moving there when Springfield sucked, we see bits of its success overshadow Springfield on the regular, all that.
But then I saw Lemon of Troy just in like the last five years or so, and realized Springfield just gets a bad case of grass is always greener syndrome. Because Shelbyville isn't the Squilliam Fancyson to Springfield being Squidward. You know how Mario is short and kinda chubby? His evil duplicate isn't taller and fitter, he's so grotesque that Mario is the tall, fit one. That's what one city is to another here.
I'd be fascinated by a video on Luigi the Italian Chef who exists as a strange bellweather of the show and somehow has more backstory than you'd think, especially compared to a bumblebee guy.
Also Ohio hates Michigan 1000% all the time while Michigan is focused more on the rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State.
I'm glad, too, that Shelbyville hasn't gotten much play over the years. I can't imagine anything topping Lemon of Troy. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if that was a writer's room rule: If you can't beat this, you can't do a Shelbyville story.

Legit surprised Shelbyville hasn't been a stand-in for Innsmouth in a Treehouse of Horror segment.
My headcanon is that Jebidiah/Hans and Shelbyville Manhattan were pirate buddies back in the day, and the argument was less about marrying cousins and more about Shelby's taste in women.

I'm parroting my nomination for Janey from the last Histories video. I still think that having her as Lisa's friend and then having it abandoned to have Lisa always as a friendless loser to be super interesting. What was wrong with Janey to begin with, per se? Would love to see a deep dive into what they actually did with her after like... Season 4?
I suspect it might be down to the state of television in the early 90's where the idea of your white, or in this case, yellow kid not having a black friend was asking for trouble, and hence we got both Janey and Lewis.
Tbh I always assumed that Janey was a 'mean' girl of some kind. Like one of those kids who'll be really close friends with you one day, and the next day be conspicuously hanging out with your worst enemy and giggling at you behind your back for no obvious reason, and the next day be suddenly best friends again and pretending like yesterday never happened.
There was a girl at school like that when I was Lisa's age. I wasn't friends with her personally, but several of my friends were and I always ended up having to manage the rows that would spring up whenever she changed the object of her affections. Some kids just like the drama.
@@Cheeseanonioncrisps I think some bios for Janey even describe her like that. There was at least one sticker album that described her as Lisa's 'fair weathered friend'. This is admitedly true with MOST friends in the show (including the Simpsons themselves at times) just Janey didn't really gain any other personality traits outside being a two faced brat.

It's interesting, that I both thought of Shelbyville as a more and less successful version of Springfield, but I had not noticed the contradiction ever before.
I would say Skinner but I can imagine the Tamzarian twist is a can of worms that is best to not open yet. So how about Superintendent Chalmers? I always found it interesting that despite his role mainly serving for a very specific type of school plot he can still find reasons to appear outside of that. Not to mention that his relationship with Skinner would be interesting to explore, seeing as it starts getting more wacky over the years

Chalmers shows up way too much in the show. When you were a kid did you ever meet your superintendent outside of like maybe graduation or something, let alone know his name
The Tamzarian episode is underrated
Chalmers is interesting because he's a mirror Frank Grimes. They're relatively normal people but while the former was broken by Springfield's absurdity the latter rolls with it

Is there really a mystery though? Homer owns a oversized 73 Plymouth Valiant, (Like Fullsize Fury big) Marge owns a 73 Chevy Chevelle wagon, and Homer did own a 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner when he was younger (He seem to have a thing for Plymouth)

Really like that you mentioned My state's rivalry with Texas, the Springfield vs Shelbyville stuff always reminded me of Red river rivalry silliness.
The cool thing about these histories episodes is seeing how characters fall in and out of prominence from showrunner to showrunner. So I'd like to nominate the three bullies. Now the show has always had a use for them; there is always a need for anti-authoritive teens to do destruction jokes. But every single season seems to switch on if Jimbo or Kearney should be the voice of the trio (I can remember surprisingly more Kearney lines than Jimbo lines when it comes to quick gags) and if Dolph should get some spotlight or be content as the third wheel. Watching them is like watching a three horse track race where each horse constantly but temporarily outpaces the other two.
You mention the three bullies at the end but I would specifically love to see a deep-dive into Dolph. He seems to be the least fleshed out, most underutilized of the three and yet he's always there. I just want to know what his deal is.

I would love a Simpsons history on Moe’s Tavern: specifically the cast that shows up often. I know you already did Barney, but there’s also Lenny, Carl, Moe, hell even the two Barflies, Sam and Larry.
Which season turned Lenny and Carl into regulars at Moe's, and how sudden was the change? They're not there in the very early episodes.
Sam and Larry are kinda like the adult versions of Lewis and Richard.
Imagine if they had an episode like Camp Lazlo where EVERYONE in both towns must sit on something pointy and last person sitting wins a prize for their town

It would be nice to see a Simpsons Histories on more locations honestly, such as the Nuclear Power Plant, the Elementary School or even Capital City itself. When it comes to characters, I am more curious about the Elementary School cast in general, mainly Janey as I feel like she suffered the same fate as Lewis & Richard.
Another Histories video that would be interesting to learn about it the abundant of former Guest Characters returning as recurring background characters, something that is more noticeable in recent Seasons although has happened as far back as the classic era with Ruth Powers & Allison Taylor.

I had never thought of Luann Van Houten being the Shelbyville 'mirror' of Kirk Van Houten. That explains perfectly why they look identical without being genetically related.
Reminds me of the real-world notion that everyone has a duplicate somewhere in the world; and, in the case of Springfieldians, theirs are all in Shelbyville.
4:44 that is a really weird sign because it lists the current distance in miles from Mexico City (a real place) as 678 miles. This would place that sign somewhere in Texas, most notably almost right on top of San Antonio, Texas. No other places in the continental USA are closer than 680 miles away from Mexico City than Texas.
The reason they keep bringing up Shelbyville is simple: it’s a funny name. But I’m kinda happy it’s one of those Simpsons entities that has one banger episode, then a couple later references to keep it alive. I know The Simpsons haven’t used the full intro in years, but I’d love to see a Shelbyville variant of it.

Fun fact: In the Nashville, Tennessee area there's an old town about 20 or so minutes from the Kentucky border called Springfield. Just a short drive south from there is a town called Shelbyville.

Oh hell yeah I’m ready for this episode. I used to play that dumb phone game Simpsons Tapped Out, and I tried to make my own Shelbyville in that.
I'd like to see Shelbyville and Capitol City start a rivalry over which of them hates Springfield more.
Also, if Kirk and Luann are Shelbyfield counterparts - who are the parents of Shelbyville Milhouse!?

I just kinda look over a list of characters, and just randomly felt Chief Wiggum being the next history.
i’d actually seen someone suggest this on another vid but perhaps Rainer Wolfcastle as an outside pick? I feel like he’s one of those odd celebrity characters from the earlier seasons who managed to actually stay relevant when so many other characters who are such a clear parody of one specific icon would fade away. Plus he has a daughter who dated Bart !!! Idk if they have done anything with him recently but I believe he made appearances pretty often in the middle years
He's still a fairly prominent minor character.
