- Rae Town, Kingston, Jamaica: an iconic location and the perfect place to catch up on The Ocean Cleanup's Jamaica project.
With five Interceptors deployed in gullies around the city (and more on the way), one guest wasn't enough: Dan van der Kooy speaks to Alecia Beaufort, Operations Manager for Clean Harbours Jamaica, and Dominik Haertl, Business Development Manager at The Ocean Cleanup, about how this enormous project got started and how we've responded to Kingston's unique circumstances.
Alecia and Dominik speak about how local people - from fishing communities to visiting schoolchildren - are benefiting and learning from our Interceptor deployments and how our collaboration with local government and vital partners such as the GraceKennedyFoundation and Clean Harbours Jamaica isn't just about intercepting plastic, but also about a wider project to improve quality of life for Kingston's community.

Education is the only solution for a better future No doubt !
As a waste manager, we do lots of education but still litter, illegal burning and dumping persists. Our roadside collection is also free! For me, it's incentives and disincentive s that will work like refunds back on returned packaging and end of life products. Our system will hopefully start next year after 10 years of pushing it.
Education and knowledge are nothing without DISCIPLINE: ............ name one person who believes littering is good.
Education and discipline is the right.
We need to help these poorer communities and countries build the necessary trash disposal infrastructure needed to prevent plastic pollution in the first place.
Money and helping build is one aspect, but educating the youth and showing them the problems and solutions will build better citizens of the world.
We need to break Capitalism's iron grip on PRODUCING plastic in the first place.
Developed countries need to stop sending their trash to underdeveloped countries.
The beautiful murals bring life to that empty building. Children will come to learn. Bravo to Ocean Cleanup for working with Jamaica!
Outstanding job, what incredible visionaries are working on this!!! Thanks for your efforts
That mural was a great way to utilize the space
Amazing! You are doing a great job there! Thank you for sharing, it is heartwarming! 🌊🌈💙
Excellent! Reuse of old building for community development and education - so many sustainable wins in addition to taking plastic pollution out of the oceans 🌊
It would be great to see water fountains here where visitors can fill up their own bottles with clean drinking water or other drinks, a small step we should all be doing at our homes, schools and offices
❤
Makes me hopeful!! ❤❤
So great to see that you have brought such beauty to this project. It did take my breath away seeing the mural!
Is it going to stop you and your entire family from buying plastic you don't NEED, and disposing of it properly?.
Keep up the incredible work! 💪🏁
How nice to see this.
Next generation´s allready building their future. Thank you so much for these good news.
And not only plastic pollution, all pollution going into our water could end today if we as a society would simply make it happen.
I'm glad the Ocean Cleanup Project is operational and making good progress. Every person alive on this planet can make their own contributions by simply NOT THROWING ANYTHING INTO THE SEA!
0:29 a good workplace is very important for long-term productivity
I saw “Plastic Jamaica”: what a difference you all are making GREAT!
Please never “write off” parts of nature which I heard the lady say a few times: man made the mess; man should clean it.
Amazing and important work across the board!!❤
Thanks Oc. Teams 👍
It is very beautiful and the sorting out of the trash just makes it so tidy and well organised.
Love watching you guys work!
Éducation and responsability are parts of the solution, but not only. Good job !
Such an amazing mix of a good cause, hard work, education and charm.
Countries that have the worst plastic pollution problems need help to build better waste disposal infrastructure.
Proud to be donating to this cause, love the progress being made, the information and education shines a well needed light on this problem.
It’s only a small amount I donate monthly but it’s a consistent donation.
Thank you, please keep this content coming. It helps in educating my kids ❤
Great inspiration for the youngsters. Hope there are opportunities for them to volunteer.
so true! volunteering could be a great stepping stone for children who may end up working in the field.
We need to put an Interceptor system over the mouth of the plastic lobbies. The oil industry should pay for these atrocities
Omg, I'm not easily impressed, but i am with you and your work. So happy to have found such goodness performed professionally by you guys.❤❤❤

Turning filth into beauty. That's what Ocean Cleanup is all about!
I'm from Brazil and I like the videos, but I would like to better understand your beautiful work. put the subtitle option (cc) in Brazilian Portuguese, thank you in advance ☮️☮️☮️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
0:44look at the pollution! that boat is contaminating the water behind it! looks like a bad oil spill....
tho it could just be churning up the bottom mud, ha ha
Please put a roof on there. The sun looks incredibly hot!
Much better use of that land.
Notice how the Ocean collects and herds the trash for us to pick up? We will take the trash out of our Ocean and we will limit the amount of trash going into our Ocean, now.
Its not enough for you to educate the population. You need to work together with the communities as well as local, state, and federal governments to build the proper garbage collection and disposal infrastructure to prevent plastic pollution.
They are doing all that.
You can learn about this topic, You see, They also have to do or work together
