I can remember finding the first stone chip on my new Golf R, it nearly broke my heart.
Most people never notice. But I bet you clean your car (regularly) and when you see new blemishes,....... Sigh. I do
Horrible isn’t it but these are cars to be driven not hours spent looking for imperfections. I’ve just bought a focus st it had the odd tiny knock and chip but it’s 8 years old. Only 30k miles one owner and that meant more than having an unmarked one with a thrashed engine.

I've recently moved on to a syringe, suck up a bit of touch up paint, and eject it slowly into a chip. Works well as you can gently squeeze it and push the paint so that it fills the chip. I recommend a very fine tipped needle syringe.

Stone Chips drive me crazy. With time I have put together quite a kit and now welcome the challenge. Practice, Practice. Those 'edge' ones are the most satisfying because you really can make them damn near disappear.

They were the ones who probably damaged the paint too “genuinely had my car keyed night before I went to get car valued and they went straight to it”
Toothpicks work for me! I use can't get to grips with a brush! (Zero coordination!)
Love your video's, I've always used a cocktail stick, don't cost much and you get loads of them.
cocktail stick I find the best to use as it leaves a blob of paint which is easily flattened when polished, great vids keep them coming.
Heres a great tip, base coat in the chip, if you go over the edges, use a proper razor blade edge gently at a angle and run it over the chip to remove the excess leaving the base only in the chip, clear coat do the same till you have a perfectly filled stone chip

I was wondering this too, unless I missed a change of frame he buffed it immediately after applying, which seems counterintuitive to me! Would be interested to hear his logic which evidently works a treat

When I did mine I found, after shaking the pot, using the paint on the brush it comes with inside the lid, or what is now on the inside of the lid, holds more than enough to stop it drying out and you can prevent picking up too much paint in the first place with the brush you are using to apply. Also means each time you load your application brush, you judge it yourself and you aren't left scraping the neck of the bottle dry after your third chip and having to shake it up again anyway. Maybe not applicable if you have 5 but 100+ it makes a difference! Also keeps the handle of your paintbrush clean which you then don't smear on everything else by accident.
Knew the exact way to measure 4 inches a bit too quickly there. :)

My current car is the first red car I’ve ever had, and the first thing I noticed was how much it shows the chips. Thanks for the video.

I have to tackle this on my 2006 black car, as well as fixing some awful touch-ups by a previous owner. There are probably hundreds, but mostly on the front bumper and that will get a respray.

You said it yourself, John - "It's like nail polish".... use nail polish & then blend it flat with nail polish remover. Does it exactly like all the expensive stuff says it does, except cheaperer. Nail polish also has "body" so 1 coat builds up to the level of the car paint easily. Plus it's inverse to the car stuff - the cheaper the polish, the thicker it goes on, the dear stuff is watery - so "going cheap" is actually better in this case. :-)
yer you can put a crow on it as well and flatten it with a sanding daisy then buff it out
@@ForensicDetailing hard to colour match the crows properly - they don't come in as many colours as nail polish. Might be ok for black or red tho..
This is the way I've always done stone chips. As I've become more into detailing, I've been wondering if it's a bit 'Ye ha', and I should be sanding and rubbing down every single chip. I'm sure for people with classic Porsche's and 3 year old Ferrari's, they might be willing to spend the money or the time on a more invasive method, but everyday vehicles this method probably provides 90% as good a finish without 90% of the hassle.

Lowe Cornell fine line painting pen is the best tool for this job.

@@ForensicDetailing no problem, it’s more like a needle point with a small paint reservoir and you tap it into the chip and it fills it from the bottom up. A very precise application and avoids over painting outside the boundary of the chip. I must have done 100 chips on my Mercedes 190e and it made a very nice job of it. You’d be hard pressed to see any from 5ft. I learned about it from Ammo NYC when Larry was doing the Porsche for the Guggenheim museum display. It’s a video all on its own for you.
Small capacity (1ml or 2ml) syringes with narrow gauge blunt needle tips work really well too.

Some car manufacturers paint colours are much softer than others, with Honda it's black and red etc. just about every car manufacturer has a "weak or soft" colour so it's always worth finding out first when buying a new car. Also with lacquer finishes the base coat is usually porous so if the chip is down to the metal it can rust beneath your repair if you just dab on base coat colour alone.
Halfords sell a primer touch up which is great to fill in the chip and you can wet sand it level before touch up
Hi John, just about to need to do this with a couple of chips, so just few detailed points if you don’t mind.
How much paint do you put in the chip, level or slightly proud?
How long did you leave it to dry?
My car has a ceramic coat, so do I need to clear this off first, I did the coating?
When can you realistically re-ceramic coat the chipped bits or would you just polish the whole car and start again?

polish the area by machine to strip the coating off. degrease with hot water and detergent then panel wipe. Then just brush the paint chip. I would not try and fill it with paint and sand it down personally. I would also not sand the chip flat and paint it. just paint the chip with tiny amount of paint keep paint in side the chip. then buff it a few hours later to level it down. I just do it the quick way. you can spend hours but you will still see them.
I recommend using the chipex kits, I've used these kits on two of my previous cars and if you take your time you can blend them in perfectly.
I was going to ask has anyone had any luck with Chipex. I couldn’t get to grips with it as could never build up layers properly as the rubbing fluid used to take off too much then the polish never glossed the area well enough. Any hints and tips gladly accepted as need to do my van bonnet.
@@acward2007 you are probably doing what I did when I first tried and not left the paint long enough before going over with the rubbing fluid. I find if you leave it that bit longer you get a great finish

I got a wee kit from Halfords its got primer, paint and lacquer. A few of the stone chips on my bonnet was right down to bare metal and began to rust. I had to scrape the rust away before priming it, I’ve got that done but I still have to paint and lacquer them this weekend, then I’ll polish them with a 1 inch pad small rotary. Hopefully will work as good as yours. I had loads to do... I drive on the motorway on my commute to work every day, that doesn’t help

BH cleanser fluid is like mineral spirits. its a hydrocarbon degreaser.

Great video and advice. I'm using OEM paint, my car is a similar red to yours but the touch in dries maroon!🙄😳😲🤬 I sourced one guaranteed paint (gloss and lacquer combined) but it was a hefty price. Your recommendation looks as good for a LOT less✌️👍🤞😊
I might invest in a battery polisher as that would help my rhuematic aches and pains👍✌️😊

Instead of a thin brush you can use a piece of masking tape rolled into a funnel shape, dip the end in paint, more control no dripping blobs.

I’ve got an F30 3 series that’s the same colour as yours and the front end is peppered in chips, no thanks to a Land Rover Defender we were following the other day with trailer heaped full of large stones with no cover! Every time he went over a bump the car got showered by these bloody things! Luckily only one hit the car and chipped it, a big fat one on the bonnet no less 😡 Will have to try your method, most of them were there before the aforementioned moron though 🙂
Thanks for this. I've got s chip down to the metal and was going to opt for the genuine citroen 2 piece kit, paint/lacquer. Doesn't mention anything about if it can go straight on un primed but I'm assuming best to prime anyway? Do you have any recommendations on primers

John, you should give a try to the touch up paint applicators that look like tiny cotton swaps (Q-Tips). I find those work best. You just do a single tap with the applicator in the rock chip and it fills it. They are also pretty inexpensive, I buy a pack of them every other year for like 10 CAN$. So that's like 6 pounds per 2 years and I do touchups really often for my detailing business.

Just did about a hundred stone chips on my red Toyota GT86 the other day. (and that's with the bumper and mirrors resprayed). I've heard Toyota paint is very soft.
Anything with water based paint is. That's the norm now unfortunately

Really like these types of vlogs along with the usual detailing stuff, liked the dent removal one you did a while ago too, very helpful. Funny enough I did a little chip today, used a cotton bud instead of a brush, worked pretty well maybe a tad big for the chip I had but it worked. Seen couple people recommend toothpick/ cocktail sticks, I’ll give that a go next time.

Jon, please use a cocktail stick to apply your paint to a chip. You have more control than with a brush. Saying that, you got good results.
The cocktail stick method is what I use as well. I always slightly blunt the sharp point.

Hi guys - I understand it fixes the look, can I just ask though, does this stop it from decay/rust too? What I don't get it, if it's clearcoat free, and you wax over it, is it still protected from corrosion?
If it's a steel panel and the chip is down to the steel. Then it can rust
What was the make of the touch up paint ?
This is because acrylic paints used in new cars are crap.
I had my bumper on old Volvo repainted by a friendly car painter, with 2 ingredient polyurethane coat. It's like a glass na bearly any chipping.
Toothpick I find the best, but you seem to have no problems with a brush. (I'm usless with one lol)

I put some IPA on the chip but it just got all sticky. Still had half a can after so drank the rest.
How long do you leave the paint out before you buff it? How coarse was the polish you used? I use the menzerna line of polishes so I’m not sure what to compare them to.
I used mid range 1 stage polish perfect finish leave it a few hours
What's the best solution to use to clean the brush afterwards?
solvent based paint so white spirit will do it.
Can u jsut use the touch pen without machine polishing? I don't have one

What is it with red cars and stone chips eh. Question, I have two layers of a sealant and two layers of wax on which I’ve done in the last couple of months. I have a number of stone chips on the bonnet and a proper scratch that needs topped up. Am I better to take the wax and sealant off and then repair? Or just repair then buff and reapply the sealants and waxes to the panels I’ve touched up?
Also before anyone asks, it’s AMdetails hybrid sealant topped with two coats of the turtle wax 75th anniversary paste wax. Which is flipping beautiful by the way!
Can I ask, why you don’t clear wrap it to not get the chips to begin with, is it no use?
I only bought it a week ago and it has the chips in it. I think though with a car of this value (20k roughly) is it worth paying 1K+ to ppf it? when it costs less to repaint it. If I was keeping it long term then maybe. If it was a porsche then yes for sure.

I try and hold my breath to have a steady hand and rest arm on surface
