Larry, I'm a weekend warrior, detailing my own rides and watching your videos for several years. Your content, clear/concise explanation and video production quality is superb -- I realize this video is several years old and you've made many more insightful, quality videos since; I rarely post on any RUclips channel, but I just wanted to extend some appreciation and gratitude for 'You Being You' -- THX
He fails to mention that if using metallic paint you SHOULD NOT mix base and clear coat prior to application; it dilutes the metallic shimmer in the base coat making the color darker and ultimately not matching well at all. Learned this the hard way myself touching up chips using this method. Has to sand original attempt out and start over. Big PITA. So, don't mix metallic and clear.
This went very well with my perfectionist tendencies! Of course it took me two days for 2 tiny chips and after all that I came back to watch this video again to make sure I did most of it the correct way and of course it came out excellent saved me $700.00 bucks Thanks man! I’ve also purchased other things like a polisher and I’ve made it a point to make it a hobby of mine who knows one day I’ll just decide to do this as a side job & make some money out of my hobby! While saving people money!
Just wow. A succinct presentation with an apparently high production value and unique, novel information. This is what every informative RUclips video should strive to emulate. Well done.
I feel like Drive Clean is becoming one of my favorite series to watch on RUclips. Its relaxed and really informative without being boring. Great job guys.
Leveling Fluid is the name of what I use as "compound"...but what you are really doing is leveling the paint. (So thats why I call it that. Great question! Thx again for watching) -L
I honestly love this show to death. It is the single greatest source of expertise, dedication, understandability and presentation I have ever encountered regarding this subject, all in one place. I am excited every time I see a new episode in my news feed and thankful every time I finish it. It's the kind of programming I actually sit down and get prepared to watch, because there is no other show quite like it. Amazing work by everyone involved and I look forward to future episodes to come.
Thank you very much M.Kosilla. That's the level of perfection i aim to reach when i touch up my 2016 Benz. You're by far my favorite teacher on car detailling.💖
One of the best touch up videos I have seen yet. I like the idea of mixing the color and the clear for one easy application. Unfortunately that won't be easy with the typical touch up pen. The hole punch + sanding paper + krazy glue was another excellent idea.
The camera work in this short little video is amazing. Absolutely superb! The credits at the end shows it too with the direction of the camera man asking you to bite the tip off, but then pause to hold it up so they have time to focus on it. Later how they edited and cut that into the tutorial video is great.
I've been looking for a proper, professional video on repairing paint scuffs on a vehicle.I have not found a good one, and I admire your details to car detailing; very professional! I would like to see a video on that. Most of the other RUclips videos from other people are amateur and bad quality. Please do a video on paint scuff repair! Thank you!
I agree with your message but I really wish you would have showed the finished product the camera was moving moving as if you didn't want us to see the finished product but I do not doubt how good you are just wish I seen the finished product
My 350z has been plagued by rock chips with its weaksauce of a paint job from factory. The previous owner blob painted the rockchips with touch up paint and I have been going crazy trying to keep em from rusting. This video gave new life to my Z33! THANKS!!!
I have 2 small chips to deal with. One is not circular but quite deep. I followed your instructions and used an artists brush to dab in the paint and clear coat. It was very difficult not to get paint on other areas. However, I followed your advice about the wax. Just went to have a look and the paint around the chip came off really easily because of the wax. I can with confidence keep building up the paint and not worry about the surrounding area if I keep following this advice. Thanks.
I've touched up a lot of chips on my Civic over the weekend, many had surface rust. I used a sanding pen and some rustoleum rust reform to take of that and then added several layers of touch up from honda to all of them. It looks pretty good, hardly noticeable unless you look at it for a while up close or know they're there. Oh and I did everything with a #2 painters brush and a fairy steady hand. Didn't do any wet sanding or anything, it looks alright now and I've never done that before.
I tried this on my 2015 Chrysler 200 with the vivid blue pearl paint and I did just about the same thing in this video. It worked wonders! I would probably be the only one that knows where the paint chip is. Thanks!
These videos are awesome. I have never had a car that I really had to worry about much, but I recently purchased a brand new black truck. The thing looks amazing when I put work in but it takes time. I get great tips and products from you and these videos. Thank you.
You can tell that all the way through this Larry was thinking "I love my car, don't screw this up, I love my car, don't screw this up" followed by "what's the point, it's not going to be perfect, what's the point, it's not going to be perfect...."Cheers again for the demo Larry.
Do like these videos, it's not just about cars you could apply many of these techniques to anything with similar materials, it's almost like an instructional on maintaining everything in life, my ocd side is very pleased.. continue!
Video is correct up to the 4:40 minute mark. Skip rest of video. Avoid parts store paint pen. Never mix clear and paint together. Before applying Carnuba wax. Check for bare metal..Use K tool sanding pen , degrease and apply thin layer of primer inside wound with tooth pic(dab) or with pointy paint brush (no stroking). Let primer dry completely. Now apply wax as shown and degrease / de wax wound as shown in video. Apply paint, with tooth pic (dab) or pointy paint brush dab or one way stroke for scratch. Do not stroke back and forth with brush. The paint is used to color in the wound. Do not fill in chip or scratch with paint. If you need to apply more paint, allow first application of paint to dry completely. Follow with 2nd coat. If 3rd coat needed, again applied paint must be completely dry. When paint is completely dry. Apply clear in the same manner as the paint. Now YOU ARE trying to fill in the remainder of chip or scratch. To do so, you must allow clear to dry completely before adding clear again...Every time you want to add more clear, it has to be completely dry...When complete, you will have a bit of a hump that you will need to level out....When thoroughly dry, wet sand with 1500 paper to level out the painted surface with the surrounding surface. Finish with 2000 grit wet dry paper...Use clean water for soaking papers and as a lubricant....When paint is level......Hand polish with Meguiars M105 Ultra-Cut Compound and CCS Red Wax/Sealant Applicator Pad. Yes, you can polish out by hand 2000 grit scratches.
If you want to use genuine VW touch-up paint you are forced to buy a pen. In this scenario, use the pen on a de-greased plastic cap to expel some paint and use the paint from the cap with a toothpick to apply to the scratch. The above comment about mixing base and clear coats is SUPER important; can't believe it wasn't mentioned in the video.
frogmanvc I have some questions about clearcoat, from when I was in school I remember that clear coat requires activator, would I have to mix clear and activator right before using? Or does the clear not require activator when used in situations this small?
I've been wanting this video for a while now. This is going to seriously come in handy a year down the road when I want to fill in some of those pesky rock chips.
The wax is such a clever idea. This puts all the tips from others all into one video. What a great video. Many thanks! Now feel confident to do my black Boxster :-)
Great show - my cars look better and are better protected after applying what I learned from your videos over the last year. Thanks! I'm not affiliated with AMO in any way, but the products are also top notch.
Mixing clear and base coat is a bad idea. Rock chip spot came out lighter and it ruined my new Porsche 911. I should have applied base coat first, fill it with clear, then sand down polish. I should not have followed your recommendation on this one.
I'm in the process of repainting the hood of my car because it had so many rock-chips and small to medium sized rust spots. I'll keep this process in mind for the future!
wow for years I've touched up little imperfections on my cars yet never had the chance to level the surface back up because I didn't know how to. Now i do. Thanks Larry!
Thanks! this is the most informative video for me to date, I have a couple nasty chips on my car I have been to scared to attack by myself to now, I'll probably fill them and have my friend that details level it for me so i don't mess up with the equipment.
I guess nobody is there now? Anyway, a great and inspirational video and excellent photography. Just one question, how do you keep the tiny mixture of base coat and clear coat fresh? Surely you don't need to mix a fresh batch each time? Thanks. Peter
I don't know what Larry will suggest but, i've been searching a solution and how to deal with the rust in a chip issue and, so far, the best product i've found was a rust converter. This product stops rust and converts rust in a primer ready to be painted. Hope that helps.
Even though last episode was really interesting and informative, it requires very specific and honed skills. I'd still like to learn how to remove the dents and very glad he made the episode. Nevertheless, I love episodes like this one, because most people can do it.
I had a good friend back in my uni days that was the spitting image of larry, right down to the brown hair, tall thin frame, love of cars and his OCD. He drove a black honda civic coupe, then later a black bmw 5 series... You're an archetype Larry! This was just a fait divers. Love the show. If I were as OCD I would clean up the paintwork on my peugeot, but I will probably end up throwing money at it instead. Any show coming up on removing long and not too deep scratches?
AMMO NYC can you describe the maximum size of a scratch/chip that this technique would apply to? (assuming no body damage, and no air bubbles around the edges of the paint) You are the bomb.com! Love your videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Do you have any guidance or tips on how to deal with botched touch-ups? The PO of my car looked like he stuck the paint in his nose and sneezed it on the panels... it's way WAY too thick and not the right color.
If your car has not been painted before you can use Lacquer thinner to remove the paint. If it has been on the car for a while you may have to let it soak in for a while and keep dabbing it. Why I say not painted before is factory paint cannot be removed with Lacquer thinner. If you had it painted then the paint will come off, Meaning not just the boo boo will come off. Lol
Larry just nicknames it "Leveling Fluid" because that is exactly what it does. It is a fluid with small abrasive particles that, rubbed against paint, essentially level the paint down to a perfectly smooth or flat surface. Leveling fluid is more commonly called a rubbing compound or a compounding polish. It is almost a liquid version (if you will) of sandpaper.
I'm definitely going to be giving this a try soon. I noticed a rock chip on the top center of my roof that has now started to surface rust, so I really hope the sand paper will get rid of that before I paint over it. I recently moved too, so now that I have a garage I'm looking forward to getting a DA polisher so I can take on jobs like this.
I just discovered a tiny rock chip that is turning orangish in the same spot. What I plan on doing after the initial sanding (pencil eraser style, I like that one a lot) to remove the flaky bits of paint is to use an epoxy rust converter/primer. Does this make any sense? I am afraid I will not be able to remove enough rust before I start touching it up with paint. Have you thought of/used any sort of rust converters?
Fill the chip in layer by layer until the touch up paint is slightly higher than the surrounding paint. Then clay bar the touch up paint until it is level.
Oops! I've just seen Matthew Taft post "He fails to mention that if using metallic paint you SHOULD NOT mix base and clear coat prior to application; ... " Scary. Thanks for that advice. Peter
Larry, I'm a weekend warrior, detailing my own rides and watching your videos for several years.
Matthew Taft thanks Matt. I should have followed you! Too late now. I have Basalt Black metallic on my Porsche and mixing clear did not match at all.
It was noticeably different with chips the size of a pen tip.
Matthew Taft So just do it in two steps instead? (Base, then clear?)
Yes. TWO STEPS, sand down, and buff out. You can use Langka blob remover instead of sanding.
Thanks!
I use the hole punch on masking tape to easily create a super-tight mask for the touch up. Awesome as always, Larry!
+GadgetsNGear Now THAT is an amazing tip. Thanks man!
+rakamadafaka900 Gimmick.
good tip
THAT is a good one!, but then when try to level, it wont look as good? thoughts?
Andrew Loo take the tape off before leveling. this is just to make sure there is no extra work in the prep.
This went very well with my perfectionist tendencies! So many experts! Let's see all your detailing & 'chip fixing videos, Your closeups etc. Larry knows his stuff.
I back this so much!! Never have I seen such an in depth step by step video on how to touch up paint. Subbed.

dude first like and comment OG fan here
How was pebble beach?
@@jpfaria2832 we will never know
Was not able to find the guide, but thank you for the video
All that work and no before and after shots?
Bob Cat, I agree. No after pics?
Larry, been watching for a while and noticed that you have become more comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. Great job buddy.
Thank you very much M.Kosilla. That's the level of perfection i aim to reach when i touch up my 2016 Benz. You're by far my favorite teacher on car detailling.💖

Larry, MillionThanks for your everlasting enthusiasm and attention to a detail. Best Video on this subject, hands down.
i love the patience and the passion you have for cars
Thank you for the amount of details and effort put into the video. Really glad you showed close ups of the finished work.

Jordan Ridgeway - haha, that's awesome!
LOL! Don't worry, you're not alone in your curse. :D
real OCD is a debilitating mental condition, paying attention and doing a good job are not disabilities.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I bet you're super fun to hang out with
His level of detail on his projects is amazing
Another great video. Some of the best car content on the web. Thanks Larry.
Great video series. Probably the best I've seen on car detailing. I wish I knew of a shop that was good like this in the SoCal area.
Best cars care stuff on the planet. Just started using it on my 997. Love it, thanks AMMO
Thank you so much Larry this was exactly what i asked for and was perfect, now i feel confident to proceed in my touch up.
Great video with ideas that I never thought of. Thanks for taking the time! I've got a '67 Camaro that I need to do a little touch up on.

Best chip touch job I've ever seen. I used to detail cars and I never achieved this level of excellence.
I've been wanting this video for a while now. This is going to seriously come in handy a year down the road when I want to fill in some of those pesky rock chips.
Larry's the man one video a week isn't enough
it was not clear that if a second coat of touch up is needed if that means applying a second application of wax and then prep with alcohol.
to date, I think this was one of the most helpful of Larrys videos (for me t least). Thanks!!
were the before and after of the chips?????
He doesnt want to show you that he's irdinary at it.
I am 8 years late. Your information is exactly what I need to fix several paint corrosion spots on my black color Accord. Thank you.
The wax is such a clever idea. This puts all the tips from others all into one video. What a great video. Many thanks! Now feel confident to do my black Boxster :-)
Great video. Takes a steady hand, great skill and lots of patience.
Serious skill. You really get my attention as an episode on /drive.
Best video on youtube concerning this subject. Thanks!
This is the only right way of doing things! Well done.
Clever and relatively simple techniques for this process, very nice
You’re an artist. Your work is beautiful
That is the problem with these kind of videos. It is all in the detail. Seems like you mixed too much clear with your base. Better luck next time.
Hey it was GREAT to see the finished article in such detail. Oh wait, you didn't show us that.
Every video of yours is completely phenomenal! Keep up the awesome job. May not have to repaint my hood at least....

My front bumper has like 50 chips in it. This is going to take awhile...
+PaperFc you must own a subaru too
+Steve Matchett my noob ass decided to take a road trip without taping up the front of my car... Stupid soft Subaru paint.
+Lexusguy0525 I should have done that... However, I was too excited at the time about my new Subie... :(

Drive video editors have such skills... There s like an added dimension !
Always loved watching your videos, this technique is very clever and I am extremely happy with the results doing this on my own black Vette. Thanks!
Thank you for these videos. Can you please show us some tips on touching up/repairing door edge paint damage?
Repeat until u turn 65
I guess nobody is there now? Anyway, a great and inspirational video and excellent photography. Just one question, how do you keep the tiny mixture of base coat and clear coat fresh? Surely you don't need to mix a fresh batch each time? Thanks. Peter

amazing information, its really impressive the amount of time and effort you put into your profession
Could you do a video explaining and suggesting brands of tools you use? Like cutting tools, buffers, and the products you use with them.

Thanks Larry, I have a few of these on my car and was wondering how to tackle this before the winter.
I've been anticipating this video since Monday morning!!! LOVE IT!
Great video Larry! So much information to take in but so valuable as always.

Awesome touch up job with professional results
I'm definitely going to be giving this a try soon. I am afraid I will not be able to remove enough rust before I start touching it up with paint. Have you thought of/used any sort of rust converters?
I haven't, sorry. I'm sure you could ask around on the auto geek forums and see if anyone has tried them on there.
Hey Ville Peltola, I did and it worked well.
Excellent video. I've always wondered how to do that correctly! Thanks Larry
Awesome video! thanks for specifying the products you used and including estimated cost. Subscribed!
Fill the chip in layer by layer until the touch up paint is slightly higher than the surrounding paint. Then clay bar the touch up paint until it is level.
Thank you for making this. I just got my first 964 and have some chips to sort.
He is probable the best Detailer out there.
thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, this is awesome
Thanks for sharing your knowledge - you're an artist at what you do.
Very enjyable to watch and to listen. Nice style of tutorial. Thanks for the info!
Wow that's brilliant! I have very small chips and unleveled scratches this would be perfect on using the Dr. Colorchip system I bought. Thank you😁
Wow. This was exactly the video and information I needed to fix a few small issues on my roof. Thanks Larry.
Good Movie but why don't you show the exact result in closeup???? This spoiled everything.

Awesome video. I will definitely use this to touch up my car. Keep up the good work
