The „problem“ for us as viewers who’d like to use this method on our own cars is: It takes balls of steel to go from a few millimeter sized blemish to - temporarily - ruining a palm-sized area in order to get an awesome result like this in the end 😄
Gotta get worse before it gets better mate
I know what you are saying! But you just gotta trust the process... 😬 Absolutely love your videos @cvrpov
No balls no glory son 😂
@@kaferere 😂
A while ago I did this, unfortunately I couldn’t control the pressure as much as I was careful and left a bit of scuff marks on the car. Then I went through a rabbit hole trying to fix the mess. Moral of the story, either practice on some cheaper cars first or just take it to a body shop.
99.9% of body shops out there: “this panel will need to be repainted…”😂
Haha it usually does need painting
The tip using the plastic applicator was a game changer on leveling the paint , thanks👍✌️
Worse case: "the whole car needs to be repainted"
It's just like when a transmission slips or a cylinder loses compression. Instead of fixing it they just want to replace it.
To be fair asking a painter to do a detail shops job, you get what you deserve?
The best rock chip repair video and result on RUclips in my humble opinion. He did an excellent and clean job. Every other video I've seen the result usually has a crater/indentation after polishing. Don't rush it. He Bob Ross'd it for me. I have a lot rock chips though. I'll just take me time, wait til spring and hop to it without trying to finish quickly but finish thoroughly. StarFire pearl is one of the best colors ever crafted.
thanks Maurice
😆 That's like saying your favorite color is clear 🤣
Midnight Blue Candy Pearl 🤘🏼
I agree
Legend! You've taken the fear away for me - thank you, after breakfast I'm going to do this for the first time
@@cvrpovHow do we get in touch please?
I've been painting for over 40 years. This was an awesome job!! 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
You can tell this guy's a pro because the way he's doing it, it looks like he doesn't give a shit because it comes so naturally to him, but it's still turning out perfect anyway, even with black paint.
17yrs 🤓
@@cvrpov I did tried same on mine, it's definitely best method for fixing this kind of things. great tutorial anyway!
I gotta admit, I was truly skeptical about the way you applied on the paint, where I was told to leave the paint a little higher than the chipped out area, let it cure for 24 hours, THEN sand it. Your results were spectacular and very expedient to say the least! The video was easy to understand and just overall very good! A+ 👍😎
Great. Thanks for watching alan
Don't do this to your vehicle, the polish will wash off in the rain and the scratches will be visible again. The only way to fix it is to apply several layers of clear coat again.
@@X152535🤡
@@X152535 FALSE. Stop posting false statements unless you know how to properly polish a car.
That's is NOT how polish works. I paint correct one fender on my car and nothing else. The compound/polishing is sill the shiniest part of the car after multiple washes and it sits out in the weather in an open parking lot.
@@X152535 FYI: Some auto bodyshops do this daily after painting a car. There is no way to avoid orange peel. Even factory finishes have it. Wet sanding an entire car followed by compound and polishing will not simply wash off. There is no way rain, water and a basic wash can strip all those chemicals to leave a rough sanded finish. If you have a washing solution that can do that, you might want to reconsider the long term effects of what it will do to your car's paint.
As a Detailer myself, you absolutely smashed this.
Perhaps a pro detailer could do it, but I wouldn't recommend doing this to your car yourself if you have no experience. I ruined my clearcoat thanks to this video and now need a respray.
Great video 👍 love the end results
I’ve never attempted anything like this on a car as it’s a bit scary but after watching some of your vids I think I’ll give it a go. Cheers
Watch the video as much as u need to and take ur time
Did you give it a try? If so, how did it go?
@@LLF1234 he prob fockd up his car
Nicely done and very informative with the types of brushes, needles, swabs and like you said KEEP IT SIMPLE! Thanks again 👍
Thanks alex
Can you tell me who's buffing pad you are using in this video or maybe a link please
Tip: DON'T DO THIS. Just touch up with a bit of paint and leave it. DON'T SAND IT and DON'T MESS WITH THE CLEARCOAT, especially if you have a newer car. Thanks to this video, I burned my clearcoat and now need a respray at a body shop. I barely touched it with a 1500. The clearcoat layer is very thin on newer cars.
I agree tried this method on my car for shits and giggles did made it worse
Too heavy with the buffer... Your fault.
Sometimes you use only base color, but at this video you use base + clear coat- why? When to use clear and when its not necessary.
All stone chip videos omit top coat 😱 which puzzles me. Yes it’s probably a near match but by top coating you go a step further to protect the chip and allow compounding to blend it in.
This is the best video I’ve seen on how to deal with chips.
You will like my latest video.. check it out
I have just stumbled across your channel I like the way you describe and instruct. You make it look so easy.
Defo going to try this method.
Thanks for the sub and glad you like the channel
The is the best and easiest tutorial of how to remove car chip on RUclips. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Great video, doest this work also when i use correction pen where base color and clear coat is mixed together? Ty much
Yes it does!
@@cvrpov thanks. You said to let it dry for 10 mins, but clear coat to dry couple of hours. So how long to dry that correction pen I mentioned above? Ty much.

You're a Craftsman & an inspiration, indeed.
BRILLIANT!💯👀😎😎😎😎😎
I appreciate your support 👊🏻
You make it look so easy. I’d be scared to death to try this on my car !
It is do able for anyone but nothing wrong with caution
8:29 Let's not get absurd, mate! There will be no one looking at my car like this! Job very well done! Thank you very much for your time put in sharing your experience!
I had to show it for the critics to which there are many
I think probably 99% of people who try this get the hole in the base coat.
Take ur time. Follow the steps
This is magic! First time watching something like that, well done bro.
Thanks
Can you please send some examples of where and what to buy for the filler spreader tool.. fabulous, inspiring work mate. Truly.
Anything flat and plastic should work if you can't get body filler spreader
great stuff lad. no bs and your teaching people how to save money. respect and thank you.
That's what I started this channel for. Thanks
Thank you for your excellent videos. After using the cutting compound which is the best “finishing polish” that you recommend to complete the job ?
Stupendous job! I now have the confidence to try this myself. Question: How would you recommend finding a suitable paint for one's car? Cheers from across the pond :)
It's solvent Automotive paint. Paint factors readily sell it here in the uk
Amazing job and gives me more confidence at trying this especially on a onyx white paint job . One question does the area you polish up need buffing every so often after ? As i wash my car once a week, would the Polish fade and then the sanding marks re appear?
This is the definition of “trust the process”.
100% 👍🏻
What about clear coat? I want to try deep scratch marks on my front bumper (lady backed into my car parked on the street while i got tires changed..) can i do what you did and spray clear, then wet sand with 3000 grit, then polish?
Check my other videos in the playlist section mate. Chip and scratch repair playlist
Picked up a new to me car this weekend, near side rear panel has been keyed about 6-8 inches, a previous owner has just touched it up but made a mess of it, obviously hasn’t gone to the lengths of this video, when the weather improves I’ll be using this tutorial to sort it. Thanks.
Worth a go pal
Is sulvant paint the same as Acrylic
No its different
That final reveal is INSANELY satisfying!
Another brilliant video , I like your down to earth content, you simplifie tasks , where other you tubers try to overdo on instructions, excellent!
Thanks for watching I try to keep everything straight to the point with less or no pre chat wasting peoples time
Like Americans you mean?
Brilliant video. In my previous experiences of chips etc body shops have said you can't do this and always priced to spray the whole panel when clearly there was never any need.
Theres not enough money in this type of method
If the customer wants to keep their paint original and a touch up is the only option I'd offer to do it but at a fixed rate similar to that of a panel respray.
is this on a Tesla by any chance :D I'm going to do this to my moms tesla cuz their pant is Ass.. and we wrapped it with a clear wrap.
It's a bmw
Excellent video, lovely to see all the stages and then the last clip with polishing was amazing, seeing is believing. You do make it look so easy. I will have a go when the need arises. Big thanks for taking the time to make the video and sharing your knowledge.
Thank you very much!
I have a ford with a ruby red colour, there is 3 deep scratches on it but you cant see them depending on the light conditions
Maybe look at my other chip repair videos
I was going to drop my car to be touched up for the same thing but now I feel I want to try it. Amazing video and hope to see more diy episodes!
Thanks for watching
how did you do?
I like your methods. On this video however, looking at the application of paint. You have obviously applied more layers than two - as shown in the video.
No just too
Great tutorial! Just simple and clear. Keep going with the good work.
thanks, will do
Can anyone give me some feedback on how they found it , just bought a new car and stone chip appeared on the bonnet - Audi A5 black!
Keen to but too scared to mess it up ? Any feedback ? Obviously he makes it look easy but it can’t be!
TIA
You can always touch up up neatly with a brush from www.paintgear.co.uk for the time being
Great job. Thank you for the great content. Much appreciated.
No problem
I have a single stage paint Ferrari. If I sand some spots with 2000grit what type compound would you use to polish after. I’m already removing paint from a 34 year old car and don’t want to go too crazy.
I would use www.paintgear.co.uk/collections/touch-ups/products/farecla-cutting-compound
I can't believe how many youtube tutorials I have watched this week, and how many of them are overly complicated for the sake of "the perfect fix" or something like this. Amazing video, thank you so much!
Question, though: what if there's rust forming already? What would you do?
I try and keep things straight forward. No bs. Glad you appreciate it. Clean any rust out carefully and treat with a rust inhibitor before touching up
Had Dent wizard come to do a few stone chips. They came and Just touched them up with a touch up pen. It looks 💩. The paint colour isn’t even quite right. I could have done just as good .
It didn’t cost me anything it was something sold with the Car .
But yuk , this is what I was hoping for .
Probably a cheap paint and the dent guy probably didn't put much time/care into it. www.paintgear.co.uk if you ever need anything to do it yourself, it's very much DIY'able
Great new [to me] method for single chips, no masking/overspray. Thanks
No problem Allen
What uk lacquer did you ise and where can i get it from? I have a Merc and not sure if its two pack. I have 1500 and 2000 as i used to do fiberglass repairs on luxury yachts.
Most lacquers are pretty decent now. Diamond clear from express paints is a good one
Thats a cracking job, I have a nera black metallic car with a fairly deep scratch that I’d like to get rid of.
Will follow your guidelines and see what happens.
Any chance of putting links up to the products you used please?
Thanks for watching. Try www.paintgear.co.uk for products
Why on this one did you use clear lacquer but on previous repairs none was used. Is there a time when it is or isn’t used specifically?
You make paint repair super approachable and easy to understand, thanks for all the effort you put in your videos and sharing your knowledge.
will this work well on a more difficult paint? I have a Long Beach blue metalic bmw m2 which is a srot of 'speckled' blue / green finish and I worry it will be realy harsh
Always worth a go mate. Will defo improve the area
Stupendous.
Probably another advantage to this method is the paint check on resale. A full section respray can be detected, while this here, not at all.
Yes a very good point.
Ok but how do i get “solvent paint”? When i ask bmw for my paint code so i can order paint, will it typically come as solvent paint or water based?
😂 it will come Solvent paint. Look at the door between the door and body there should be a little tab with writings. Vin #s and all. In there there should be your paint color code & numbers. Google to look for that color on line or ask body paint shop to order it for you.
It appears like a bloody miracle!. Is it that you are so gentle with the grit sanding? You don't ruin the clear coat. A fantastic job. You are an artisan. I will have a go but don't expect to get your results, which are yes ....95% perfect.
Thank you .
Thanks for watching
with 1500 or 2000 it's kind of difficult to ruin the clearcoat, so don't worry.
How did you get on with it? And the result? Please
Will this work with metallic paint? After covering the rock chips and spreading the paint around, would that ruin the metallic finish of the original paint?
No it won't ruin the finish as the metallic is under the clearcoaf lacquer
Thanks. But the little metal pieces would still look good within the paint? @@cvrpov
I invented car body work and this is a legit technique.
I'm so proud of you.
Thanks it means alot coming from you
@@cvrpov 👌
how about not spreading with plastic and let them dry and level it by wet sanding ,compound + polish ?
Yes this is a possible method too
We had exactly the same chips after a day of having a new car so thanks for this tip worked a treat 👍
No problem 👍
Happened to my car within a week. So damn frustrating.
A very nice job. That gives me the confidence to have a go myself.
Years ago I bought a black BMW that had a large paint chip missing from the bonnet. I think the previous owner had run under something. I made sure it was clean and then built up the paint using a chip repair paint with a brush. I ended up with a build up of paint higher than the surrounding area. I then used T Cut to take it down. Finally polished it and most people wouldn't have known it has been done.
Nice one
Does the paint you used have clear coat mixed into it? Or just base coat?
Wow! Amazing results without doing a full respray.
What lacquer did you use?
2K clear or just a standard touch up pen type of lacquer?
For the buffing will meguiars ultimate compound do the job?
Thanks for watching. I used some 2k clear on this but a touch up or 1k lacquer would be fine. Ultimate compound should be ok yes
@@cvrpov
Appreciate the response.
Cheers!
What wohld happen after a thorough car wash? Wouldnt the polished surface become bad again? Or is it Permanent ?
It should be a permanent fix
Absolutely brilliant. This is exactly the guidance I needed. Thank you
Cheers
How did you get on? And the result?
So after you put the wax lets say it rains or maybe someone washes it, will it show as dull like it was before and if not what makes the wax bring back to life the paint and clear coat and not make it compromise. I just need it explained in layman terms since im slow
It's not wax its a compound/cutting polish..imagine its a liquid sandpaper that also shines up the paint permanently (if done correctly)
That was simply brilliant - cracking to watch what you made look like a really straightforward process. I think I’d actually give that a go too. Thank you, I’ve just subscribed hoping to learn some other great tips …like how to repair a ‘graze’ where some kind sole has rubbed the rear quarter just forward of the wheel arch as they’ve left eye car park given my VW T6.1 a lovely mark to fix 🙄
Plenty more in the pipeline
I’m gonna practice this method on the misses car
Fantastic content and step by step process for a Diy Job 👏
Thanks for your Comments Mrs Buff
Anything for deep large scratches with a basketball size area of brown paint from a pole? Probably to much to ask lol
Probably most of that is transfer and would polish anyway. www.paintgear.co.uk sell 100g tubes of Farecla G360 paste if your in the uk
I love your videos, straight to the point and don’t make it complicated to understand = )
I try not to mess about
Where would anyone get small amounts of undiluted colour matched paint and clear coat...?
www.paintgear.co.uk
Awesome mate , gonna try this for sure !! Cheers 🍻
Great 👍🏻
ahhaha another buff boy thinking all that sanding will hide permanently behind the polish!!!!
Another crazy af comment
Another well instructed video. Thanks for taking the time to make these. Great work.
No problem
Is this process the same for all colours I’ve a white cupra I’m just worried about making it even worse haha
Yes. White will be fine. Silver is not great
Fantastic job! Does the paint need to be thinned down to work with that method? The problem I have always had with leveling chip repairs is the factory paint is harder than what is being used to touch up. By the time you correct the 2k grit scratches out of the original paint, the chip is no longer level. I haven't used a heat gun to cure the paint or clearcoat on top of the color so maybe those two things would help. Great work - I need to give it another go I guess.
I've noticed alot of people use 2000 to try and level the paint. This is a bad idea and usually just starts to sand down around the chip.. rather than the chip blob itself. On German cars I even use 1200 as a 1st grit. 1500 at least should be used 1st.
"Haven't used clear coat on top" 😂
What kind of pint did you use ?? Also how do i find my color if it’s not something as basic as black.
Solvent paint. Paint code Locator here: www.paintgear.co.uk/blogs/paint-codes
Nice work. I’d imagine doing this the first time it would be hard to believe it will look this good in the end. All that sanding and fear it will make it worse, but it works. I have a lot of the types of chips on my hood. Need to fix then.
Give it a try. Take your time.
How did you get on? And the result?
What is the lacquer that you are using here? I'm only familiar with the spray on clear coat stuff.
2k clear. Any lacquer will do though
Just a tip I saw on AmmoNYC, Larry takes a hole punch and punches the sand paper, then glues the piece removed to a new pencil, on the eraser end.
His idea behind this is that the eraser has enough give to allow the sand paper to reach into the chip, to clean up the jagged edges but also allows you to focus most of the sanding on just the chip.
He also uses a syringe to lightly deploy the paint into the chip, until it's filled. The tiny needle allows it to move the paint around gently as well.
Either way, good video, and very similar to the way he does chip repairs. It's great that people like you guys, go out for your way to not only share your trade secrets but show your techniques.
Larry is a talented guy and has a great RUclips channel. I've seen that video... a good while ago, I have perhaps tried the method at some point. I actually think my chip repair comes out better than his. I think the surrounding paint around the chip being leveled aswell helps the overall process and finish. Ok.. you are removing some clearcoat... but ultimately some Compromise has to be met when doing a repair like this. Alternatively there is always a respray.
@@cvrpov This is why I like looking at multiple people. It's nice to get different perspectives. I think his video is probably great for cars with thicker paint as well. Additionally, I believe that video, which is I think around 6 years old, has had a replacement update video. I appreciate that people keep the progression of work up like that.
I liked your video as well, rock chips suck and all hate them. I'm glad I found your channel to add to my rotation. People like you and Larry really help out those of us who still appreciate our cars like people used to and don't see them as an application, like a microwave. Keep up the good work!
can you share the link?
@@mjjferreira I have provided the link below. Now mind you, this video is actually 9 years old. If you search on RUclips "Ammo NYC chip repair" he has had 3 paint chips update videos since the video below as well. What about the break in the clear coat with the surrounding unsanded paint .?? Dont you need to clear coat and blend too? thanks
This is leveling the clearcoat in the damage area
Lucked out seeing this, just starting a hobby detailing business, people asking for some chip repairs, I said yes to a couple people already. Your method will be perfect for me to try!! Gotta watch all your stuff now 🙂

I would say for deeper chips to use some filler first and a bit of primer but you got a great result here
If you know it, you can see it, but always better than the white pits and someone who doesn`t know it, wouldn`t mention it.
That's kinda a riddle and I like it
I really didn't think that was going to look as good as it does - nice job!

How about metallic colors?
My dad taught me this when lacquer was the norm. These new cars with thin clearcoat like you did are challenging and you made it look easy...bravo 👏👏

Shouldn't you have applied protective varnish over the paint?
I did

Haha I like this
what kind of clearcoat lacquer
Any. 2k is the best but some from a shop will do
@@cvrpov Will regular 1k clear coat work
This will 100% work with waterborne paint. I’ve it done many times.
Edit: I like that he said it’s 95% better. Honestly that’s what touch up paint is for. If you want it 💯 you need to respray the panel imo.
I think solvent is better but glad you have had some success with waterbased
Yeah, you could get the whole door sprayed and that may leave some imperfections most people can let go of that 5%
I would spray all car. You done perfect job well done
How do you mix water based paint for touching up thanks
You dont usually. Solvent is best
Hi have to tried this technique on a panel which is pointing more towards the eye like a bonnet?
Yes
Is the paint you get from Dr. Color Chip solvent or water based?
I think its solvent based
The problem im having is getting solvent based paint. Can only get "normal" (water based i assume) paint locally.
If your in the UK then www.paintgear.co.uk
@cvrpov thanks, I'm in NZ now and getting some stuff is a chore :)
I am going to try painting on water based then brushing on laquor sprayed in a lid from a can (can only get spray laquor and can only get water based paint).
If you have a vid that gives me a better way to do it then I will watch it :)
Hi what area you cover need some chip repairs doing Oxfordshire
I'm a good way away in derby
would you recommend this method for metallic paint?
Yes
Where do you get the paint. How do you know the color? Is there a number on the vehicle?
www.paintgear.co.uk can get the paint from just the car registration
Which compound polish? I see the yellow bottle, so assume it's something Farecla?
I have Meguiar's compound and AutoGlym super resin polish, and neither are capable of even getting the smallest scratch in clearcoat polished out, nevermind scratches from sandpaper.
Hi Gary, check out this link www.paintgear.co.uk/collections/touch-ups/products/farecla-cutting-compound
Thank you. And do you then either machine or hand polish a vehicle once it's been cut with compound? Any good polishes? I find the AutoGlym good, but best applied by hand and go an already cut surface.
First attempt went well, thankyou so much!
Great to hear!
That reveal at the end "this isn't an improveme ... wow!" -- brb going to try it on my neighbors car.
