Just a tip I saw on AmmoNYC, Larry takes a hole punch and punches the sand paper, then glues the piece removed to a new pencil, on the eraser end. His idea behind this is that the eraser has enough give to allow the sand paper to reach into the chip, to clean up the jagged edges but also allows you to focus most of the sanding on just the chip. He also uses a syringe to lightly deploy the paint into the chip, until it's filled. The tiny needle allows it to move the paint around gently as well. Either way, good video, and very similar to the way he does chip repairs. It's great that people like you guys, go out for your way to not only share your trade secrets but show your techniques.
Larry is a talented guy and has a great RUclips channel. I've seen that video... a good while ago, I have perhaps tried the method at some point. I can't believe how many youtube tutorials I have watched this week, and how many of them are overly complicated for the sake of "the perfect fix" or something like this. Amazing video, thank you so much! Question, though: what if there's rust forming already? What would you do?
Stupendous. Probably another advantage to this method is the paint check on resale. A full section respray can be detected, while this here, not at all.
Watched this the other day and this blew my mind. Always skeptical rubbing any kind of sand paper on paint. Tried it out on my new truck with a chip that same size. Black paint might make this an easier job. Truck is black too. Gave it a go and came out amazing actually. Didn’t use clear though. Still came out like clear was on it. So tried this on PPF on the front. Rock chip thru the film onto the metal bumper. What’s to lose right? Was actually able to do the same work over the paint film too. That part took a little longer working on the clear film. Very happy with the end result. Great video super inspiring!
Great video 👍 love the end results I’ve never attempted anything like this on a car as it’s a bit scary but after watching some of your vids I think I’ll give it a go. Cheers
This a great video for body shops. I can see people trying this method and sanding through the clearcoat. Once you do that it’s game over. Great repair by you.
Tip: DON'T DO THIS. Just touch up with a bit of paint and leave it. DON'T SAND IT and DON'T MESS WITH THE CLEARCOAT, especially if you have a newer car. Thanks to this video, I burned my clearcoat and now need a respray at a body shop. I barely touched it with a 1500. The clearcoat layer is very thin on newer cars.
Excellent video, lovely to see all the stages and then the last clip with polishing was amazing, seeing is believing. You do make it look so easy. I will have a go when the need arises. Big thanks for taking the time to make the video and sharing your knowledge.
Nice work. I’d imagine doing this the first time it would be hard to believe it will look this good in the end. All that sanding and fear it will make it worse, but it works. I have a lot of the types of chips on my hood. Need to fix then.
Glad this video was suggested to me today. I was just talking about fixing some chips on my wife's car and amazingly without searching your vide was suggested.
Lucked out seeing this, just starting a hobby detailing business, people asking for some chip repairs, I said yes to a couple people already. Your method will be perfect for me to try!! Gotta watch all your stuff now 🙂
Good job. Despite that, most people lack tools, a place to work and most importantly: the lack of skill that is required for a satisfactory result. Having said that, once there's a chip you're pretty much screwed unless you do one of two things: you let a shop fix it or you buy a touch up pen and accept the fact that it's as good as it's going to get unless you spend a fortune.
Awesome video, great work. Finish looked like a glass mirror. And so simple it's unreal. I have a chip on the bonnet of my new car. Looking forward to trying this myself. Would never have had the nerve to try it until I saw this. Thx for the video!! 👏👍
It’s so simple but works incredibly well. I recently did a very dumb thing resulting in a dozen scratches that were very visible. By repeating this over and over you can barely see where the scratches were.
Awesome job. Inspiring and provides great tips. I'm getting the nerve up to attack my rear bumper that has a deep gouge!! No fear after watching this channel.
Stupendous job! I now have the confidence to try this myself. Question: How would you recommend finding a suitable paint for one's car? Cheers from across the pond :)
Really good tip about going from the coarse to finer grade sandpaper and enlarging the area at the same time. I guess this creates the blending effect and most other videos I watched gloss over this detail. I also like how you used a buffer pad on a drill. I didn't know you could get results this good. I have a few scratches around my A pillar and inside the door frame where someone tried to jimmy open the door and they are such an eye sore, but I may attempt a repair. Hard to reach spots with a mechanical buffer.
That was simply brilliant - cracking to watch what you made look like a really straightforward process. I think I’d actually give that a go too. Thank you, I’ve just subscribed hoping to learn some other great tips …like how to repair a ‘graze’ where some kind sole has rubbed the rear quarter just forward of the wheel arch as they’ve left eye car park given my VW T6.1 a lovely mark to fix 🙄
Thank You so much for this tutorial, I watch the video couple times, and follow along, The cure time for the paint and clear was pretty fast, about 7-9 min for each using a heat gun. Also since it was the first time, I use 2500/2000 grid. Everything came out perfect. Thanks.
Amazing job and gives me more confidence at trying this especially on a onyx white paint job . One question does the area you polish up need buffing every so often after ? As i wash my car once a week, would the Polish fade and then the sanding marks re appear?
Thats a cracking job, I have a nera black metallic car with a fairly deep scratch that I’d like to get rid of. Will follow your guidelines and see what happens. Any chance of putting links up to the products you used please?
just ordered a kit from paint gear. Ive done some colour sanding and polishing as well as restoring headlights and motorcycle windscreens but havent tried this type of paint repair. I have a couple of areas on a bike that i would like to have a go at. If you dont try you dont learn and if the worst comes to the worst I can always get them done professionally.
Hands down the best and easiest. I have probably 30 or so rock chips that are small on my g70 3.3t. Thank you for this video. Makes me feel better about doing this job. I can afford to have it resprayed, but I don't see the point when it will just get like that again. I would rather learn to fix it myself
Fantastic job! Does the paint need to be thinned down to work with that method? The problem I have always had with leveling chip repairs is the factory paint is harder than what is being used to touch up. By the time you correct the 2k grit scratches out of the original paint, the chip is no longer level. I haven't used a heat gun to cure the paint or clearcoat on top of the color so maybe those two things would help. Great work - I need to give it another go I guess.
I've noticed alot of people use 2000 to try and level the paint. This is a bad idea and usually just starts to sand down around the chip.. rather than the chip blob itself. On German cars I even use 1200 as a 1st grit. 1500 at least should be used 1st.
Absolutely the simplest and most effective way to fix rock chips! Thank you for sharing the best and cheapest way to do it! Have a quick question..I have to remove the paint off the rock chip that was poorly done by the dealership. It’s blotted. What would you be the best and easiest way to remove it? What product to use so I clear the messy work? I’ll follow your guidance. Thanks so much!
Wow! Amazing results without doing a full respray. What lacquer did you use? 2K clear or just a standard touch up pen type of lacquer? For the buffing will meguiars ultimate compound do the job?
This will 100% work with waterborne paint. I’ve it done many times. Edit: I like that he said it’s 95% better. Honestly that’s what touch up paint is for. If you want it 💯 you need to respray the panel imo.
At fkng last. This is the whole, right thing to do. Every colour fix needs sandpaper and some rubbing with polishing machine. Otherwise, it's just a blop of fresh paint. Thank you for your fine presentation !
@@cvrpov thanks. You said to let it dry for 10 mins, but clear coat to dry couple of hours. So how long to dry that correction pen I mentioned above? Ty much.
Great result! In order to have a better result you need to smooth better the chip, use alcool maybe to clean the area and lay down more thin layers of base and flatten it with maybe a 800 before going with clear coat
Nice videos. I have been researching paint correction and repair for a bit now. People usually leave gaps about certain things but you answered all my unknowns. I feel like I can actually attempt it on my 93 corvette for a few deep rock chips that had been previously repaired but looked awful (all they did was just fill it with paint and it sticks out like a sore thumb). I’ll let you know how it goes.
This is superb. Would love to learn further more, how to tackle similar chips where it has gone back to metal with what appears to be the commencement of surface rust?
Great job!! I have 2 chips caused by a roof bar collapsing, and a scratch on the door, ive bought the paint gear kit, and some 1500/2000 grit, and some pads for mh cordeless drill, looking forward to trying this!
I have probably 3-4 hundred chips on the hood of my black truck and half are to the metal and rusty. My 1st concern is stopping the rust so I used a Dremel with a small fine grinding tip to remove the rust and feather the edges. Then I dabbed on some touch up paint on each spot after cleaning with alcohol. I haven’t decided whether I’ll just dabb a little more on and leave it or sand, compound and polish with clear.
As a Detailer myself, you absolutely smashed this.
Perhaps a pro detailer could do it, but I wouldn't recommend doing this to your car yourself if you have no experience. I ruined my clearcoat thanks to this video and now need a respray.

it never stops blowing my mind how well compound works after sanding....what theeeeeeee
You make it look so easy. I’d be scared to death to try this on my car !
It is do able for anyone but nothing wrong with caution
Awesome video, great work. Finish looked like a glass mirror. And so simple it's unreal. I have a chip on the bonnet of my new car. Looking forward to trying this myself. Would never have had the nerve to try it until I saw this. Thx for the video!! 👏👍
Glad it was of use cheers
Great tutorial! Just simple and clear. Keep going with the good work.
thanks, will do
It’s so simple but works incredibly well. I recently did a very dumb thing resulting in a dozen scratches that were very visible. By repeating this over and over you can barely see where the scratches were.
Another well instructed video. Thanks for taking the time to make these. Great work.
No problem
I would never have thought of putting a lacquer coat on it, brilliant !
works a treat
I'm a simple man...I see something new uploaded from CVR POV, and I press like.
Haha I like this
Awesome job.
It's solvent Automotive paint. Paint factors readily sell it here in the uk
They make assorted shapes of cotton buffing wheels for Dremels that would work for those tight areas
Plenty more in the pipeline
Thank You so much for this tutorial, I watch the video couple times, and follow along, The cure time for the paint and clear was pretty fast, about 7-9 min for each using a heat gun. Also since it was the first time, I use 2500/2000 grid. Everything came out perfect. Thanks.
I really didn't think that was going to look as good as it does - nice job!
Glad you liked the vid mate
Amazing job as always! You never fail to impress with your painting skills. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Absolutely brilliant. This is exactly the guidance I needed. Thank you
Cheers
How did you get on? And the result?
Amazing job and gives me more confidence at trying this especially on a onyx white paint job . One question does the area you polish up need buffing every so often after ? As i wash my car once a week, would the Polish fade and then the sanding marks re appear?
Thats a cracking job, I have a nera black metallic car with a fairly deep scratch that I’d like to get rid of.
Will follow your guidelines and see what happens.
Any chance of putting links up to the products you used please?
Thanks for watching. Try www.paintgear.co.uk for products
just ordered a kit from paint gear.
Great attitude mate.
Fantastic content and step by step process for a Diy Job 👏
Thanks for your Comments Mrs Buff
Hands down the best and easiest. I have probably 30 or so rock chips that are small on my g70 3.3t. Thank you for this video. Makes me feel better about doing this job. I can afford to have it resprayed, but I don't see the point when it will just get like that again. I would rather learn to fix it myself
Thanks for watching!
I love your videos, straight to the point and don’t make it complicated to understand = )
I try not to mess about
I am impressed!
You did what "couldn't be done"
"Haven't used clear coat on top" 😂
I honestly want to thank you for taking the time to show us this. Really cool
It’s the Farecla that does the magic !!
Cheers
Awesome mate , gonna try this for sure !! Cheers 🍻
Great 👍🏻
Absolutely the simplest and most effective way to fix rock chips!
Great job. Thank you for the great content. Much appreciated.
No problem
Wow! Amazing results without doing a full respray.
What lacquer did you use?
2K clear or just a standard touch up pen type of lacquer?
For the buffing will meguiars ultimate compound do the job?
Thanks for watching. I used some 2k clear on this but a touch up or 1k lacquer would be fine. Ultimate compound should be ok yes

Appreciate the response.
Cheers!
Expertly done. Very impressive. Looks so simple. I guess it requires a bit of patience when sanding down.
Just take your time yes
This will 100% work with waterborne paint. I’ve it done many times.
Edit: I like that he said it’s 95% better. Honestly that’s what touch up paint is for. If you want it 💯 you need to respray the panel imo.
I think solvent is better but glad you have had some success with waterbased
Yeah, you could get the whole door sprayed and that may leave some imperfections most people can let go of that 5%
I would spray all car. You done perfect job well done
Just came across this as need to sort few customers cars out. The product looks really good and simple. Im going to be placing order next week 😎
Thanks for watching. PaintGear has many detailing techs on its client list 👍🏻
At fkng last. This is the whole, right thing to do. Every colour fix needs sandpaper and some rubbing with polishing machine. Otherwise, it's just a blop of fresh paint. Thank you for your fine presentation !
Thanks for watching pal
Does the paint you used have clear coat mixed into it? Or just base coat?
Thank you for your excellent videos. After using the cutting compound which is the best “finishing polish” that you recommend to complete the job ?
Great video, doest this work also when i use correction pen where base color and clear coat is mixed together? Ty much
Yes it does!
Thanks for the tips!
Fantastic mate. Thank you from across the pond.. beautiful work.❤
Nice videos.
Glad you enjoyed it. Welcome aboard
Brilliant. I've yet to try your methods which look very helpful. Just never done anything like this before don't really want to mess it up..
Just watch and learn as much as you can
The best repair I have ever seen excellent job
No problem
This is superb. Would love to learn further more, how to tackle similar chips where it has gone back to metal with what appears to be the commencement of surface rust?
I did a video on a white vw some time ago with rusty chips if you want to check that out
@@cvrpov Awesome. Thank you!
amazing results! I am so mad about my the rock chips on my new car. I will give it a try. Thanks
get them fixed up !
How was it?
Great job!! I have 2 chips caused by a roof bar collapsing, and a scratch on the door, ive bought the paint gear kit, and some 1500/2000 grit, and some pads for mh cordeless drill, looking forward to trying this!
Good luck 👍🏼
This was WILD to watch. I'll have to pick up a scrap body panel from the junk yard and try it out. Cheers from across the pond.
Thanks for watching 🇬🇧
I have probably 3-4 hundred chips on the hood of my black truck and half are to the metal and rusty. My 1st concern is stopping the rust so I used a Dremel with a small fine grinding tip to remove the rust and feather the edges. Then I dabbed on some touch up paint on each spot after cleaning with alcohol. I haven’t decided whether I’ll just dabb a little more on and leave it or sand, compound and polish with clear.
Wow.... I m can't believe how well that cleaned up. Thanks for posting this video
