No, no I agree with you 100%. I hear a lot of both --- that they were nonessential and that they were lacking in musicianship, but I disagree with both entirely. I think, even though they didn't necessarily write the songs, they contributed to the sound because the four of them had a special energy as a group. They furthered that by playing the songs live with blood and skill.
june's leave I think it's entirely possible Corgan was happier when he had 3 friends he met and experienced his early years as an adult with to play with than since when he's had "hired guns". But I really need to listen to his albums and live shows after they left to have a better judgement call on that. That said, the band has not experienced success in the way they did since the original 4 broke up. From what I read Corgan has gone batshit now though. It'd be hard for me to identify with his music anymore given the person he's become.
