Rick and Morty continued its 6th season with a really out there sci fi concept, and they leaned into it HARD. The 2nd episode of the season, titled Rick: A Mort Well Lived built a really fun new simulation concept out of the already established Roy: A Life Well Lived video game, and the concept on paper, to me, is reminiscent of stuff we saw in the first couple of seasons. At least conceptually! But I think the thing that people seem to be overlooking about this episode is that through this simulation story, we actually also get a really unique and in depth character deconstruction of Morty himself, as well as a fascinating analysis of Rick and Morty’s relationship at this point in the show. And based on that little twist in the ending, it raises big questions about Morty as a character moving forward! So let’s breakdown the implications of Rick and Morty season 6 episode 2: Rick: A Mort Well Lived

If I'm being honest I think Rick was bluffing.
We KNOW he actually loves Morty despite his inability to admit he loves everyone. Actions speak louder that words and regardless of what Rick says he still saves what would be less than 1% of Morty. If he actually didn't care why bother? It's not like that 8% was 8 individual Morty people it's was at least a few countries. Making Marta literally less than 1% of Morty.
And let's not forget Marta didn't start off as defiant if anything she starts off the episode as one of the most complicit and obedient. That's why Rick picks her she's easy to work with.
This says to me ALL of Morty is able to overcome his blind faith and dependability on Rick. If anything President Morty that sounded a lot like Evil Morty (who was also president Morty funny enough) was the defiance Morty already had for Rick.
Edit: and as far as Morty RIGHT after he gets out of Roy I think this is just that shock of getting all back into one after several lifetimes getting smashed in. We saw how he was right after his first run of Roy
Rick on the other hand is familiar with the game and can bounce right back pretty quick plus he had the added bonus of not being the entier population of a planet

Not sure how you missed how important the Summer/Rick situation is in this episode. Rick literally left himself completely open and free for her to take care of. He wasn’t worried and gave vague instructions because he fully trusted she would handle it. And she did. No zinger of how she goofed it and he had to figure it out last minute or change the plans. No bit where she’s begging for extra approval. Just smooth interactions between the two.

I think you're missing the biggest point in the episode: Marta was who Rick was trying the hardest to bring out. Who Rick enabled to lead. And who ultimately let stay in the machine because she wanted to, and Rick enabled her to.
Rick wanted Marta's aspect of Morty so much that Rick let Morty's world/personality destroy so much of itself just to wait for Marta.
Marta's also the only one that Rick says he loves and respects.
This wasn't a story about Rick not loving and respect Morty, it was the level of effort and work Rick would do to keep Morty as his own person and individuality. Even when ultimately, he couldn't.

One thing I think everyone is missing when they talk about this regression is something Johnny touched on at the end. Rick intentionally preserved the Marta piece of Morty. I think this is undervalued as a display of caring for his whole grandson and I'm also inclined to believe the pieces of Marta might return to Morty one day. Heck, it may even be that Rick figures out the old "agree to everything" Morty annoys him or isn't as fulfilling a relationship. It would be really cool to see Rick admit that the part of Morty that doesn't bend to his wishes is a part that he (Rick) needs around. Finally, I think there's even evidence of this previously: when Morty detoxifies he's much more capable and confident, and Jessica openly tells Morty that Rick was lamenting his absence. Rick needs Morty on more than one level and I think this is just a slow burn to him realizing it.

Yeah I don't think Marta staying in the game was meant to be the writers "getting rid of" Morty's defiance. I mean, she's only one five billionth of him, and a tiny fraction of that "8%". I think it was meant to reflect on Rick's character more than anything. How he grew to value something despite it's insignificance. Marta was the one "part" of Morty that was the most defiant of Rick. She's like what Evil Morty was to the citadel. And Rick lets her live her own life, which is a surprisingly emotionally nuanced decision for him to make.

Something I really liked was seeing the moments where Summer is at her most confident, coupled with the last episode. Where she wants to be independent and impress those who she think are cool (Rick, Space Beth), but flails & drops the mask a bit when she's on her own, and becomes confident again when she feels like she has an upper hand (others are playing too by the book) or has someone to show off against.
As someone who hasn't seen Die Hard, the B-plot didn't feel like a standard R&M parody to me, being more about that dynamic of 'Summer can stand out where others play by rigid & defined expectations', which landed super well for me! It's a moment where everything being meta helped define each character's method+worldview, rather than just being references to or critique of some other piece of media.

I don't think that marta staying in the simulation will impact morty's personality at all. I think that fundamentally all of the MPCs (morty player characters) are morty. The traits we see in marta are also in all of the other MPCs, but for one reason or another they didn't manifest. The differences in the mental states and therefore the differences in behavior of the MPCs are a result of the game's code and the game's environment. For instance, the game encoded the existence of a jewish family, and the game programmed marta to believe she was jewish initially (but it could only use morty's knowledge of Judaism to actually create a jewish family). Additionally, the MPCs would be affected by their environment to change their behavior just literally everyone is.
Again, the point is that this charismatic, empowered bit of morty's mind called marta being left in the game doesn't make morty any less charismatic or empowered because all of the MPCs had the same mind. It's just that marta's charisma and leadership was able to manifest because of a combination of encoded beliefs and environmental factors.
The idea that all of these mind are the same mind makes all of the conflict between the MPCs trivial, because it's nonsensical to distrust someone who is the same person as you. This, in my opinion, points to the theme that all people IRL are fundamentally the same (because we all like people and all hate suffering) and our distrust of other people's differences is likewise trivial.

it's interesting (and also kinda fucked up) that rick essentially lobotomized morty in this episode, but also didn't really have a choice. he obviously left marta behind, but also keep in mind that literally every other aspect of morty's personality was convinced to go with rick by marta.
however she convinced them, either by threatening that they are ultimately insignificant if they don't go with rick, or by playing up how great rick is/how good morty's relationship with him is, or however the fuck she did it, she is ultimately implementing the same idea into every aspect of morty's personality: rick can be trusted, and whatever he says is correct.
this means that EVERY aspect of morty now fully trusts rick and basically idolize him since he had an almost godlike presence in their roy lives (rick says it's not a religion, but they obviously all see it that way). any capacity for critical thought against rick has now been completely terminated.
what's worse, rick basically had no choice in doing this since convincing them to come with him was really the only viable way for the roy mortys to rejoin morty's personality. hence the whole "we don't have 5 billion chloroform rags" bit. all aspects of morty were essentially brainwashed into submission and devotion, and any that weren't (i.e. marta) stayed behind. it's like how every rick on the citadel either abandoned their beth or had their beth die, because any rick who had a living family he cared about wouldn't have discovered interdimensional travel. hence why there are seemingly no dianes on the citadel.
it's also worth noting that this isn't really a "reset" of morty's development. even s1 morty didn't completely trust and often disliked or even went against rick (not killing morty jr, insisting on continuing the adventure, asking for the love potion and demanding he fix the results, demanding he be treated better after learning about the brainwave thing, etc.) but new morty seems incapable of any of that. he isn't really shy or nervous like s1 morty either, he seems like a rick-obeying robot.
idk where exactly the story goes from here, but i don't think the writers are just going to drop any of this. marta is certainly coming back at some point, and total lobotomy/conversion therapy combos (done on a SYNAPTICAL LEVEL!) aren't easily undone. i'd be willing to bet that this pisses off the family as well. maybe rick prime uses marta to try and turn morty against rick c137? who knows.

This was one of those episodes that almost felt meta in an unintentional way. I got the impression the writers were forced to tone back Morty's development, and this is the in-universe explanation they settled on. I don't dislike it, but it felt especially dark in a way I keep forgetting the show is capable of. It also might be a stretch, but I've seen people pointing out there was a reference to Raiders of The Lost Ark in this episode, and getting at the idea that this is essentially Morty's "lost arc" in the sense that it's being shelved for now.

@@ListlessLion i also get the feeling that they had to reverse some of morty's development, but i do think it's necessary. mory's arc felt way too rushed, what the hell could they have done with his character for the next 5 seasons? plus, his development kind of erased his most iconic traits (nervousness, moral compass, stuff like that) and didn't replace them with anything.
who is season 1/2 morty? easy, he's a nervous, awkward boy who gets bossed around by rick. under all the acne and stuttering, however, he has a strict moral compass and is willing to go against rick if he feels it's right.
who is season 4/5 morty? uh, he's kind of awkward. sometimes. sometimes he just acts normal though. he goes along with what rick says, unless... well sometimes he just doesn't, and there's not really a clear reason why. he's totally fine with killing innocents, though. he's just kind of... nothing? his character is really inconsistent. the only identifiable arc he has is the corruption of his ethics, which might be interesting if the show could bother to explore it beyond 2 second throwaway gags.
idk, i don't think new lobotomy morty is a bad thing. it's better to just admit you were wrong then just let one of your main characters remain completely static for half the show.

I think this was a way to regress Morty back to that first season version of morty but will make an appearance in another episode. But they could also show how that effects him as well as the creators because they're stuck in this middle ground between being themselves and living up to the expectations of another entity being Rick and the audience who has been begging and pestering for "classic Rick and Morty" whatever that means to them even tho what brought them together was their own natural attraction to each other

My theory is that Marta asked Rick to keep her in the game to mature as a person. Marta is clearly the best part of Morty, and even continued to grow throughout the length of her time in the video game. In the episode it is stated that the game has been "re-centered around a lady living a full life". They also explicitly state that the game can be found again and won't be lost in the warehouse, which suggests to me that we may see it once more in the future. I think that that Marta will be allowed to grow within the time dilation of the game and after a period of time will be re-inserted back into Morty.

"We are all one consciousness - self experiencing itself - yet, individually we kill each other over the semantics and ability to define what is [when all is permissible] ". We are all "Morty" in the end, and the politics/religious battles that take place mirror the fickle and brittleness of our existences [or how we define them to be - devoid of "Morty"]. I think this episode hit an esoteric understanding of theology/spirituality whilst parodying the peacocking of politicians/leaders we see all too often in our world. So to do all this *whilst* progressing lore / back story with both an A and B plot... the writers are really flexing now!
