    • @Raptured_Night
      @Raptured_Night Год назад +3

      The Jerkass Homer criticisms always confused me. I remember being a kid when the Simpsons first began airing and how parents made a big deal about the first cartoon aimed more towards young adult viewers vs. just children and the "shock" of the reoccurring trope of Homer choking Bart. That was such a thing back then but in the newer seasons, you don't really see that kind of visceral animation of Homer choking his kid. XD So, I'm like, are the people claiming Homer became more mean-spirited towards his family in later seasons of the Simpsons remembering the early seasons with a bit of nostalgia-tinted rose-colored glasses? Because I can still remember how that was a BIG DEAL and a total controversy for some parents (the Simpsons even made the local news in my area warning parents it wasn't a cartoon for children lol!). It seemed to me he mellowed out in the later seasons and the bigger problem with his characterization in the weaker seasons was just that they really dialed up his doofus factor a bit too much so it was more like he was oblivious to how his antics harmed his family or other people at times than it was a case of him being a deliberate jerk.

      My only wish for the show is they will finally make Lisa have some accountability. Most of the characters learn a lesson or at least face some consequences for their actions but the show will bend itself around Lisa in order to never show her being in the wrong or in any way inferior. Even Barthood, an overall fantastic episode from the "newer" seasons had to completely invalidate Bart's feelings as a character because heaven forbid the viewer may ever see Lisa in a less than positive light ever.
      I know she's Groening's favourite character, but Lisa is a Mary-Sue at this point and she ruins modern Simpsons way more than she ever contributes.

    One of the keys to the classic years’ success and longevity is how they evolved. Season 8 is nothing like Season 2, but they’re still great years. It’s great to see the show try and evolve again, and out of a very long funk where it seemed to be fine set in its ways. The opening and ending scenes seem like they’re from an alright episode, sure, but they’re clearly mocking the same-old same-old conflicts they were churning out around Season 14. And 19. And 24. And 29. I hope they’re having more fun with the show, because it sure seems like it.
    And about the throwback scenes in this episode, while they look like 2000s episodes at a glance, I love how they brought back the old eyebrows and teeth. Made them feel more authentic.

This is the first time they've given the bulk of showrunning duties to someone new in nearly 20 years, so I do think that has a lot to do with it. It’s crazy how much people’s expectation that new Simpsons is bad prevents them from seeing the potential in these newer seasons. I voted on a “Best New Simpsons Episode” bracket on Twitter last month and it seemed like fans always voted for the older episode in the bracket even though there were several cases where I thought the newer one was the better of the two. In the end, the final 4 episodes fans chose on a best of seasons 10-33 list were from seasons 10-12, and the winner was “Trilogy of Error.” Its not that I want to knock “Trilogy of Error” because it is a fun, experimental episode, but voting trends in that bracket suggested to me that some of these fans have not watched the show since Season 20 and just automatically chose the older episode for the sake of it. The recent season and the one happening now have so many sweet, memorable episodes! I particularly loved “Pixelated and Afraid” and “Lisa’s Belly.” It is not the same as seasons 3-8, but it is still something special and I hope that more people will give it a try!

      I'm someone who never stopped watching the series. I've grown up to see there wasn't so much an ebb and flow in quality so much as a series that has been on for most or all of our lifetimes is going to have to change with writers and showrunners coming and going, trends in pop culture and humor, and time just making old bastards of us all eventually. It's like expecting Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd to still be on Saturday Night Live and still doing their old characters on the regular. You can't fight time marching on. You either have something like the Simpsons, a show that you notice subtle changes gradually getting bigger and more noticeable over the years, or a 10, 20+ year gap reboot, where everything is instantaneously different because everyone involved is all new. NOTHING stays the same, and I'm okay with it as long as they can find a reasonable enough voice.
      Family Guy, however, I've missed episodes the past 3 seasons and I just didn't care. The Simpsons is an American institution, FG lost its relevance a decade ago.

      Tbh online theres a lot of insecurity in sincerity these days
      Like to the point where someone won’t just admit that they honestly haven’t given the show a chance in 10 years and don’t actually know if its truly bad or not
      They’d rather just bandwagon on a thing they don’t even know what they’re talking about anymore out of fear and wanting to keep these comforting
      Like its too much to just be honest with yourself and just say “idk” and leave it at that.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Год назад +1

      @@theradionicrevival8068 I'll admit the turn of the millennia episodes are rough. Gags were given priority over plot and even logic (and not in a funny way), early Family Guy was stealing its thunder, abuse of those overly long plot set ups and musical montages. Things did get better I'd say about the 2010's but the thing that really gave the show the shot in the arm was doing string character pieces and leaning harder on drama, giving us some solid scripts. It's a bold move for a show that's been on longer than most of its fans have been alive. But I can see why a show that's been on that long lost an audience.

    Having Disney back them has actually been a blessing in disguise, makes them less concerned with TV ratings and playing it safe to (supposedly) prolong their death, and more willing to do what they really want to do. Even in Al Jean's Disney+ era episodes, there was generally a marked upswing starting. The streaming/prestige TV era allows more creative freedom - which is great in the hands of seasoned writers and animators who know what they're doing. My theory is TV itself is a sinking ship, and was taking The Simpsons down with it.

On a day-to-day basis, he's annoyed by the sax and he tells her to keep it down. That was WHY it was such a great twist that he was the one who bought her the saxophone--it showed where his heart really was, and his heart wants nothing but her happiness. It's still fair for her to comment that he isn't supportive because he often isn't.

    I watched this episode not too long ago, as I've sort of been getting back into watching Modern Simpsons lately and everything you said here hit it spot on!! The experimentations they've been doing have been quite interesting, and it's great seeing them branch out and not be afraid to try new things. This episode for sure proves that they're doing that and that it can and does work! All those people who are still somehow finding the gall to complain about episodes all these years later, when they're not even watching the show anymore and haven't been for years confuses the hell out of me.
    However, I love that it doesn't stop those who continue to work on it and that they actually aren't afraid to admit it with meta-commentary about their own show. It's also nice to see it evolve and how it's changed so much over these long 33 years, heck it's been around long before I was even a thought or a cell but I think this is one of the only shows currently out there that can tackle the reality of being on for so long, but still being able to shake things up and be worth watching.
    I used to watch it weekly as best I could when I was a preteen/young teenager tuning into the newest episodes, and seeing some of these modern ones shine in their own light just brought me back to those times I would get so excited to sit down and see what they had to offer. It's lovely to see that they can still evoke that same feeling, and leave the viewer coming out of the experience feeling all nice and fuzzy inside! I got off track here a bit, but I wanted to say thank you for making this video and touching on this show again!

    1990: "Stephen King's It just had a hugely popular TV miniseries, do you think the time might be right to do that thing we talked about? No? Well, okay."
    2017: "Against all odds Stephen King's It has remained relevant, and we've remained... Well, we're still here. Surely now is the time to... No? Seriously?"

    I followed FOX animation longer then most but did eventually drop it. It was clear that Meg would never get respect, that Stan would always kill off interesting characters and the Simpsons just didn't care. Some of the last things that happened before I quit, and I forget when I stopped was Lady Gaga , Apu being written off the show, The Futurama crossover, the Family Guy Crossover and one of those time travel flash forward episodes. and Tree House of Horror not only came out late but it was also kind of lame. and I just sort of let it go and moved on to other things.
    I think people who complain are stuck in "This is the last thing I saw and that's where my mind is stuck"
    like the person who quit Pokemon or Mine Craft or the Arrowverse or Star Wars half way threw, you've missed out on a lot of changes and if you dwell too hard on "Ash never wins against the Elite Four or "I can't have the national dex" or "Finn's not a Jedi" or "there's nothing to do in the nether" or "they got Supergirl but no Superman" or some other crazy hang up then you miss out on the fact that things eventually "Got good"
    and while we have a right to Never watch "Rise of the TMNT" because Splinter was a fat lazy slob we may also have to deal with never seeing the movie Netflix put out.
    In the case of Pokemon I feel it was worth it to get back in the game. In the case of some other shows I really don't feel like Im missing any thing and I don't feel a need to follow it in hopes that it'll get fixed.
    Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans never got fixed so some times its good to let go. On the other hand Ghostbusters After Life and Bill and Ted Face the Music were great so some times its good to come back Some things like Avatar TLA I tend to refuse to watch for a long time only to love it when I do. Other shows I hate and I give a 2nd chance and still hate. Some Fandoms like Spiderman I left and have seen no reason to come back to. Some like Magic School Bus I was never in. and Some times like Adventure Time I can't watch the old stuff but the new ones Im really in to.

    The fact you said it's hard to imagine it going another 10 years is doubting the fact that Disney really doesn't care about the integrity of the franchise. Even if they had to literally replace everybody on the show, cast, crew, animators, and all, Disney would still try to make more Simpsons episodes. It's a big reason why they bought fox and a genuine cash cow to this day. Even if the original voice cast goes I can imagine Disney replacing them with sound-alikes. Now would this still be the Simpsons to fans? Probably not but I could see an event such as that ending the Simpsons, but until that day I think this show is going strong into like season 50+.
