Hi Guys love your content. I have the opposite problem really would love it if you could address it at some point. I’m a 3 handicap. I can swing easy in the 170s ball speed and mid 180s if I jump on it. But in competitive rounds I can’t take the driver out the bad because it’s not reliable. I just hit a driving/4 iron or hybrid off the tee. I feel like if I could get the driver in play more often it would significantly lower my scores. It’s the only club in the bag I consistently struggle with. What are the best ways to become an accurate driver of the ball? Or what modifications to equipment would you suggest?
Hey there Tales. In general, with your speed, going heavier and stiffer may yeild some tighter dispersions! With that being said, there could be any number of reasons you're having troubles with accuracy with your driver. The only way to figure out the specific answer would be to go through our fitting process. Find your nearest Club Champion location and schedule a fitting and undoubtedly you'll leave with the answers to your questions!
@@clubchampionmedia currently been playing a hzrdus RDX 6x in an M3 set down to 8 degrees. I’m in the UK near Bristol where is the nearest Club Champion? There don’t seem to be many fitting centres in my area that carry many X stiff shaft options.
Why is distance more important than accuracy for low scoring? Does the correlation between distance and los scoring necessarily mean that distance causes low scoring? Correlation does not always mean causation
Correct. Better golfers have better swings and better swings hit the ball farther. The better swing comes first. Distance doesn’t make the better swing. The better swing makes the distance.
I agree the shaft is important. So what do you recommend in matching iron, hybrid and fairway wood shafts to the driver shaft? I realize they perform differently, but if is the timing of the delivery of your swing, wouldn't their be an optimal matching shafts for the other clubs. For instance, if I am using the ever popular autoflex (SF 505 X) in the driver, are their optimal iron, fairway and hybrid shafts?
@@lawbinson I mean as a club fitter, you wouldn't just randomly start pulling shafts. What methodology would you use to start pulling potential options?
I know the best drivers hit up, but why does trackman have the PGA tour average as slightly negative with driver? It might imply for as many guys who hit up, there's an equal amount who hit down. To be fair though, the last table is from 2015. Let's see the updated numbers.
Most of the longest drivers hit up like Rory. Most of the most accurate drivers hit it flat or slightly down, especially those that tend to cut the driver.
Trackman will be reading all PGAT drives. As a player tees off on a dog leg or into the wind and hits a low lofted, low spin head and shaft he probably will adjust his swing for that shot. The boys are talking about straight driving holes.
Superb video. In conjunction with that could you speak to controlling path with speed? It the one thing I struggle with be it driver or long irons. Blocky slice with the driver is my miss. 110 to 115 club head speed. Thanks gents!
Counter balanced shafts can sometimes help with a negative club bath. Nemesys or Tensei Orange are good places to start. But the only way to know is to go in for a fitting yourself -- we recommend your friendly neighborhood Club Champion location.
How high launch is too high. I launch at almost 17 degrees with similar swing speed and ball speed to you. I have a Mizuno stz with shaft is lowest setting. Definitely too much spin and I get 0 roll. I am happy to be carrying over 260 with straight flight. But it sucks to be out driven by people hitting 240 but rolling past me.
That's a bit too high launch probably based on your assumed swing speed. If you're really carrying it 260 then your swing speed is probably in the 105-110mph range, maybe even faster. Ideal launch angle is about 13 degrees give or take a degree (maybe two, depending on your swing characteristics). You say you have your Mizuno ST-Z driver set to the lowest setting on the shaft adapter, but you don't say what the stock loft, either 9.5 or 10.5. Either way, on the Mizuno drivers, when you set the loft to the lowest available setting, you are making the driver's lie angle more upright. The stock lie angle is 56.5 degrees, and when you set a Mizuno driver to its lowest loft, the lie angle will be 58 degrees, 1.5 degrees more upright. Setting the loft to its lowest setting also closes the club face 4 degrees. These setting changes could be affecting the way you swing and deliver the club into impact. It sounds like you are probably hitting it too low in the face, which would lead to the high spin ball that balloons up in the air, lands too steep (ideal land/descent angle being mid/high 30s degrees, maybe low 40s at most), and doesn't roll out. You could also be coming in too steep with your swing delivery and hitting down on the ball, which could also be contributing to the high spin.
I went to my local club champion for a driver fitting, $1000 driver for no change in shot shape or added distance. All locations are not like this one.
Because he has elite speed…120+….so he doesn’t have to optimize to have a lot of distance…his launch angle is only around 10° and spin is 2600-2700…for most drives he wants to control it because he hits it far enough regardless…if he really wants to launch one, he’ll tweak his setup and delivery to launch it higher. Many of the longer tour players would rather sacrifice a few yards to have a reliable flight. Tony Finau spoke to this….he doesn’t try to get optimized trackman numbers…because he can’t control a high launch low spin ball…aims for 2600 spin
It’s still about launch data. Another great example is Rahm. He may hit down w/driver since his driver is set at 10.5*. That’s where dynamic (delivered) loft is one of the key data points to look at on monitor.
@@MarkArnold92660 That’s not true if you’re talking during his Butch Harmon tutelage. I recall an interview w/Butch where he specifically discussed Tiger’s driver swing. This was back when Tiger was only player on tour still using a DG in his driver. Butch was very specific not only on his aoa but how consistent he was. It was something like +2.6* and NEVER varied by more than +\- 0.1*. He said he’s never worked with a player who was better than +\- 0.5*. Given how Tiger has always used among the strongest lofted drivers on tour, 7.5-9.0, it would be highly improbable he would ever have a negative aoa w/driver. A player w/negative aoa would commonly have relatively high driver loft, such as Rahm and his 10.5* driver.
The distance/handicap theory is a complete chicken/egg scenario. Are the handicaps lower because of the distance or is the distance longer because a lower handicap golfer hits the center more often?
