I have to say, My own 7 wood is from Wishon Golf. I purchased the EQ1-NX Fairway Woof and had it custom selected at 22Deg. At 41.5 Inches it consistently send my golf ball 170m / 185 yrds carry. I love the consistency and ease of use. This club helped me drop from 104 strokes per round to 84 strokes.

I remember a golf show from years and years ago where the host showed how you only needed three clubs.
A seven iron, putter and sand wedge.
He showed you could be putting for par on every hole with this set up.
He even got a birdie on the par three hole.
That episode always stuck with me and now here’s this gentleman basically updating the idea.

I am 52 yrs old and my hcp is 9. This year, I got fitted for a new set. My set now has 5h, 7w and 4w. They replaced my 5i, 4h, 5w and 3w. Then I added a 62° to complete a 14 club. I got to tell you that the 7w is the money club. It is easy to hit even on mishits, launches high, and very forgiving yet still long.

Whilst I get a fair bit of stick I don’t carry a driver and my longest iron is a 7. The rest of the bag in terms of getting distance is made up of a 5 wood for long tee shots, comfortably 220 and a 7 and 9 wood. Yes they sometimes fly a bit high but more often than not straight.

My five wood these days is 17.5 degrees and brought the 7 into my bag initially with a second hand G25 and now upgraded to second hand PXG 0211 i honestly don’t think the the club will ever come out of my bag. I’ve been carrying a 7 wood in the bag for about 8 months now it’s a reliable 205 yards off the tee and fairly reliable 200 yards off the fairway! What I really love about the 7wood is hitting into a green from 200 yards out is the trajectory of the ball is high enough that I can hold greens from that distance! Happy to add that this summer I’ve been able to drop my handicap about 5 full strokes into the single digits! (9.4 to date)

When I start playing again my bag will be, 3W with heavy 7 wood shaft, 9W 5H single length 7H(!) strong 9i,😂 high toe 54 wedge and putter, all carried in a short legged carry bag. Simplifying golf is key. The 5 and 7 h will bee used for chipping. I might put in my driver 12.5 degree with 3 wood shaft and 10 grammes extra weight in the head (goes the same distance as standard length but more accurate )

Was using a 24 degree 9 wood earlier this season with the roughly same results but the shaft was a bit too long and I miss-hit frequently. May switch to a 7 wood as I get older and lose club head speed, but for now this hybrid #4 is giving me all the distance I need and they are just way easier to strike. Those partners who always ask me why I use my 5w or 4i on T-Off while them use their driver. I'm able to hit about 225yds with my 5w and my chances to hit it straight are well better than with my D1 or even my 3w. It's often enough on many holes over an average 6000yds golf course to be left with a middle or a short iron shot for the 2nd shot.

The driver was just not repeatable off the tee. The replacements were. 10 to 20 more yards from my driver didn't enter into it. I'd try the 7W if I could get a loaner. Otherwise I'm good where I am.

Good advice but it's golfer dependent IMO. I'm quite a bit older than you. I hit my driver OK most of the time. I've lost a lot of distance and now only about 5 yards between say a 7 iron and an 8. I have an older 5 hybrid that is my go to club as I have confidence that I'll hit it well. I am going to get fit and see what combination of lofted woods vs hybrids make sense. Also, I probably don't need say 7-wedge. Maybe 8 and wedge but fitting will sort that out. All that to say I'll probably end up with fewer clubs in the bag.

What is the difference between a 7 wood & a 4 hybrid? My 3 hybrid is the 19deg & so is my 5 wood. One of them will come out this winter! Both are the same length shaft. The only difference is the head size & I tend to use the 5w off the tee & the 3h off the fairway. I hit the 5w slightly further but that may be because it’s off a tee? I must admit I have always used Wilson & did have a 7 wood which I ditched when I had the 4h. Wilson don’t appear to do a 7w!

Confusing part is I recently watched a video comparing a Driver vs FW wood. Its data showed the dispersion pattern for each was almost identical; thus, negating the idea of the FW wood being the more accurate, given you lost distance with the Wood compared to the Driver. So, as in all things “internet” which data do you trust more?
For the curious, I personally tee off with my 5wood (which I have supreme confidence with both off the tee and the turf.) And I keep up fine with my golf buddy who always tees off with his driver. Also, so enjoyable out-driving others with my twenty year old (V-Steel) fairway wood.

I started using a 7 wood about 5-6 years ago more as a utility club (not driver replacement) and pretty regularly break 90 nowadays (and even 80 a couple of great days!). Would you use the 7 wood over say a 3 or 4 hybrid (with an eye towards a 7 club bag)?

Thanks for the advise. I have one question. I carry a 3 hybrid nd a 4 hybrid. If I get 7 wood, it will hav same loft as 4 hybrid. So how will the 7 wood over power the 4 hybrid. And if I carry a 3 hybrid, do I need a 7 wood?

I started playing 3 years ago. I'm 53 and the used set up in my bag is an 15* Auto Pilot...gave up with the driver. 7, 9 and PW and a 5 wood. I'm close to breaking 90.

Good video. I'd make one further recommendation to anybody who's more than a 10-handicap: Toss your 9-10.5 degree driver and replace it with a 12-14 degree one...and shorten it to 43-44". Keep the 460cc head for forgiveness, the added loft makes it easier to hit, and the shorter shaft will help you hit more fairways. Golf is a LOT easier when played from the middle of the fairway!!

I can hit my 4 iron and 5 wood. I hit them pretty far and straight. But three off the tee with driver, missed putts and poor chipping is preventing me from breaking 90. My last 6 rounds 90 or 91

I’ve been using a 7w when I’m in the rough and it works great. I’ll try it instead of a driver. How should I tee it up?

  • @paulgouge1896
    @paulgouge1896 2 месяца назад

It depends on your swing speed, conditions where you play (wind) and iron lofts. Some new 4 irons have 19 loft, which is 1 weaker than a traditional 2 iron. Summary: lower swing speed = higher lofted clubs.

I know you were high on the 5 wood too. 7 wood better than having the 5 wood for comparable results? Really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Not necessarily I think the principal is the same, play a fairway wood with loft that you can control

If my back holds up this summer I’m treating myself to a new bag. Thinking driver, 16.5° 3/4wood, 7 wood, 5hybrid, 6-pw. 50° and 56° cbx4 wedges. I have about a 95mph swing speed. 75mph with 7iron. Normally score around 90 with my best being an 84…. What do ya’s think of this range of clubs. Suggestion or mods that might work better it’s only 12 clubs with the putter too.

I think all golfers should look at what strokes a 7 wood will save them. Course dependant obviously, on my home course (parkland) hitting a four iron three times in the first three holes vs three seven woods (210 yd wedge) is a no brainer. How it would fare on a windy links vs a four iron would need to be tested.
