I had thought that the diary was in Lucius' possession because Voldemort gave it to him for safekeeping (at some point before his ill-fated attack on Harry's parents at Goderic's Hollow in 1981), without specifically telling him what it was. I attributed much of Voldemort's scorn for the Malfoys after his return to be due to his anger at Lucius for using the diary so carelessly, leading to its destruction.

The diary was able to communicate with both Ginny and Harry. It might have communicated with Lucius as well. Lucius might not have known about the chamber of secrets or the basilisk. He may have known that Tom Riddle wanted to be resurrected. The diary may have asked him to find a way to get it into Hogwarts without telling him exactly what it was planning to do.

The idea of hiding dark arts materials from the bureau at that point in the story would have made for an interesting spinoff. Maybe not a full TV series, but one movie where a notable manor is raided and the dark arts gets it's moment of glory going down.

Hum 😲 I'm not so sure. There was the Malfoys/Weasley blood feud. So no I don't think so, the only regret Lucius would have was first being found out. Second Riddle reaction to the loss of the diary, of course at that time Lucius thought Riddle wasn't coming back.

Basilisks have a great vulnerability to rooster cries, so they could be hard to raise, hard to use (stare kills indiscriminately), and relatively easy to counter (with a rooster).

Somebody pointed this out but I can't remember where that the page that Hermione had in her hand when she was petrified is not from Hogwarts because if it was Hermione would never destroy a book. She just copied the information down on a piece of paper instead. Also in the same scene just before Lucius comes in Draco rips a page out of a book. At first you don't realize until later that it might be the same page that Hermione found. She probably was at the library.

Excellent theory 😊! But I think he was killing 2 birds with one stone. Aside from making sure he wasn't in possession of the diary anymore, I believe he was also wanting to test Harry. After Draco told his parents all of what happened that school year, Lucius wanted to see if Potter had any exceptional magical skills or was it just dumb luck on his side. Even though he wasn't a fan of the Weasleys, he wasn't trying to kill Ginny. And if him and Narcissa knew that diary was a horcrux, who better to destroy it than Harry; since the Malfoys didn't try to look for or help Voldemort in any way.

Lucius only new that the book contained very powerful dark magic and he was instructed by Voldemort to get the diary to school where the events would take place as usual, strengthen him, a whole lot more. It would have meant that Hogwarts would have played host to a phantom version of You know who. If succeeded, the spirt would have come out of the diary and floated around the place, behaving like anyone else. He would have been corporal and not solid. ...mmm.... I would imagine that would be been terrifying. Two of them about and nothing to stop this one.
However, he fell before he gave the orders, so Lucius just did it as a power trip and out of spit to destroy the Weasley clan and discredit Arthur because of the fight in the book shop, the rivalry, the ministry raids, and because his so called Embarrassment of them. He then hoped to use his position of governor to remove Albus and Hagrid, use them as scapegoats so he can officially take over the place, turn it into an hostile pure blood extremist place that practiced the dark arts that would have punished those who was involved in making Voldemort disappear.
    However, luckily his plan failed.

And Ron who learned to speak it (he spoke it to open the Chamber of Secrets in DH, explaining that he just copied noises he’s heard Harry make before)
Neither Dumbledore nor Ron were Parselmouths

I think you missed one important thing. Lucius knew Tom was a charming teen and Ginny would fall for his charms. That Genny would be an easy target once Tom sapped enough of her life force to appear. Not to mention it would be a double stab at Mr. Weasley when it was learned Genny opened the chamber of secrets and had died in there.

Parseltongue can be learned... Ron uses it to open the chamber so that he and Hermione can get a basilisk fang... and there's evidence that Dumbledor learned it since he appears to be able to understand the Gaunts. While this COULD be something where he "guessed" based on context, if you pay attention to the stuff the Gaunts say in parseltongue, there are a few things that Dumbledor would really only know if he understood the language.
People born as parselmouths do seem to have an added benefit of being able to control snake as well as converse with them, and, of course, they wouldn't have to study/practice to learn to be a parselmouth, but there us every indication that people can LEARN it.

One other reason. Hogwarts students belonging weren't checked that year so it was a good place to hide anything to do with the dark arts. By giving it to someone who would know little about the dark arts it could easily be used without questioning the danger out of all the younger generation there Ginny was the easiest target since she had just gotten her first cauldron. Its easier to slip something in there as there was no lid than trying to slip it into one of the shopping bags.

Why didnt the venom of the basilisk destroy the horcrux when the basilisk fang penatrated Harry's arm? I mean the fang destroyed teenage Voldemort horcrux so why didnt it destroythr one inside Harry? Big ass plot hole of convenience. When Rowling confirms some theories people have came up with, i think she liked the idea of that theroy a lot and just lied about it and say its a good guess and they are right. Dont think she even put one thought in those whatsoever and just liked them enough to agree and i dont think she was doing that to take credit of them and say she came up with them and people just had lucky guesses, she agreed to them probably because she might have been stumped at giving an answer, like a case of writer's block so to speak, or just agree because some sounded like the best and to shut potter theoriest up who might be coming up with the most ludicrous ridiculous theories out there and didnt want it looking like it should end up on the history channel ljke the show ancient aliens and those stupid ass conspiracy theories like that Albert Einstein wannabe sporting his wild messy hair! Eventually people will come up with some messed up theories hoping she will like it and use it for her own. I like the story but when its been put through the ringer and having prequels that bombed like most of them do and sequels being made they get stale and stupid writers trying to make another smash boxoffice hit end up just crashing hard, LOTR storyline is all over the place and has back stories and so on. The writter to me went way overboard creating that world, and making it extremely difficult to stay interested without falling asleep or not understanding it. The original trilogy was really good, but the hobbit ones I cant make myself watch them and be tortured or bored. Star wars also. If writers would just be satisfied with what they created and not do it to death with prequels and sequels just because it was a smash hit. If they were planning a prequel then start with those in the first place then the major story which is a sequel then whatever after that. Seems it always starts in the middle and its because they wernt planning a prequel or sequel, that what they created was it until it was a hit and got their ego inflated and dollar signs in their eyes write more and rhen screw it all up. I guess the saying stop while you're ahead has never entered their mind. Or mine since I made this rant way too long and i cant be bothered to proof read any of it, my eyesight is getting fuzzy after looking at the screen for a long time.

the diadem, locket, and ring were all hidden by Voldemort personally. Nagini and Harry were never hidden. Huffkepuff’s cup was sent to the Lestrange vault for protection but never given to Bellatrix.

Actually...when Bellatrix loses her "stuff" over the sword being in the possession of Harry and company the words that she used gave Harry the notion that something else might be in the Lestrage vault...this is what gives Harry the idea to go to Gringotts in the first place
This is how we know Lestrage had an item...it is speculated she knew neither what it was or its function but she knew it was there (a pretty trinket of hufflepuff) given to the Lestrage's to look after...whether Voldemort personally gave it to her or he sent it to the vault it maths out to be the same...
...he gave it to her for protection
And yeah...you're right about the other horcruxes..he did keep those quiet...although he did have Regulus be a part of the hiding of the locket horcrux, i would have to read the Hallows again to remember specifically if Regulus was aware of what the horcrux was...
...but he certainly knew it was dangerous item of sorts and trusted Kreature the house elf to detroy it...giving his own life in the process...which suggest his death eaters were installed with some type of trust in protecting some of Voldemorts interests whether they knew what they were or not
