"A Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd "(1978) -
A featurette sponsored by Pepsi-Cola that was originally intended to be released in Summer 1978 as a promotion for the Southern Rock outfit's planned musical roots LP.
The plane crash in 1977, which claimed the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines, transformed the album into an epitaph entitled "First - and Last", and this short film from promo into a celebrative tribute. "A tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd" played nationwide in 80% of theaters showing Grease in the summer of 1978.
Pepsi Presents a Tribute To Lynyrd Skynyrd, with the 1976-77 members: Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle, Billy Powell, in a 15 minute film screened in theaters before the movie Grease.
in 1977, a cameraman followed Lynyrd Skynyrd around for 21 days - filming the boys doing everything from fishing and horseback riding to cruising through Jacksonville and paying tribute to Beethoven, the cameraman was enlisted by Pepsi as part of a planned series of product placement commercials with Lynyrd Skynyrd that would formally introduce the band to the world as regular guys who loved to unwind at home when they weren’t dominating every stage they came across with their fast and furious brand of Southern rock.
Running at over 15 minutes in length and cut with live footage of Lynyrd Skynyrd tearing through “Free Bird” and “You Got That Right,” this footage is like looking into a time capsule and while seeing Ronnie Van Zant fishing with Gary Rossington or watching Steve Gaines talking about his hopes for his influence in the band is enough to make even the most stoic of Skynyrd fans a little choked up, there’s joy to be found in spending time getting to know the guys in their respective elements.
Sadly, much of the footage was lost after the crash but thanks to Pepsi, who turned the salvageable footage into a stellar tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, we’ve got over 15 minutes of moments with the greatest band in Southern rock for your viewing pleasure - so pull up a chair, break out your favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirt and check it out in the footage below!

I was there too at this show, REO, Foreigner Ted Nugent and Lynyrd Skynyrd it was great! Such a great memory! I still have the Lynyrd Skynyrd T shirt I bought there! 47 yrs ago!
I cant even fathom the music of today being played and admired for its genius 45 years from now. the best music has already been made.
I agree and I'm only 30 lol
I was there too. Sittin in the stands. Couple buddies got caught smoking weed and they told us to exit at the bottom of the ramp. We got to the bottom, no security there, so we just headed out onto the field. Better view. Too bad they don't make concerts like this anymore. Miss those days. RIP Gary.
I was right up front
There will never be another band like Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were the absolute best. Lotta loss. 😢 didn’t have to happen with a rotten manager to put them on a broke down plane. this band could’ve skyrocketed to the moon.
They was on their way 😢
Agreed! The absolute best of the best.
ROCK IN PEACE 🎸GARY ROSSINGTON.
Condolences to his family & friends.
Enjoy that musical reunion in the sky .
I was there... 15 yrs old. Straight in the line of the stage... what a concert!!!!
I’m watching a Skynyrd documentary and they mentioned the Anaheim show so I googled the show and found this footage!!! I was there!!!Fantastic!!!
Me too! Somewhere out there on the field, aged 17. What fun those concerts were. Went to a bunch of them at Anaheim Stadium.
@@FRAME5RS same here. I was 20 and in The Marines at the helo base in Tustin. So many great great shows but so so glad I made it to this one!!
@@OutlawPeteNJ Remember the food fight, somewhere in the middle of REO Speedwagon? My girlfriend got a drippy peach pit to the face. It was hilarious, and a crazy day.
@@OutlawPeteNJ I was also at this concert but I was stationed at El Toro. I still have my ticket stub!
Ted Nugent,Foreigner,R.E.O.Speedwagon,Lynyrd skynyrd.
I love to hear Steve and Ronnie swap vocals on you got that right
Definitely one the greatest concerts of all time!!! I will never forget it.Ted Nugent and Lynyrd Skynyrd forever in my heart and mind. I still have the ticket stub!! So sad they were taken at a young age. But their music lives on forever.
Janie, I was also at this concert but do not remember too much now 45+ years later. I was a young Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, Santa Ana. You know what, I also have my ticket stub!
Ted Nugent,Foreigner,R.E.O.Speed Wagon,Lynyrd Skynyrd.
@@joehrlein847 I remember watching people on the front row of the upper deck trying to hang on as it bounced to Freebird. And yes, I still have my stub.
Allen collins should be remembered as the best guitar solo ever by anyone on Freebird..save none
@@johnburns2002 when I saw Allen Collins play...I wanted to play guitar, He was awesome...1977,Anaheim Stadium, California, Angels Stadium.
I do believe people will be listening to Skynyrd for many decades to come. They are one of a handful of bands that music that will never be out of style I guess you could say.
I wish I could go back in time and warn them not to get on that plane
The Entire WORLD Agrees with you on that !
definitely and strongly agreed
Absolutely the greatest band ever
Me and 3 of my brothers went to this concert in 1977. Born and raised in LA. My older brother and I hitch hiked from San Fernando Valley down to Anaheim Stadium. At the time my father lived off Coldwater canyon in the San Fernando Valley. I was 15 years old. I wandered off from my brothers and ended up right up front on the left side of the stage looking right up at Steve Gaines ... man that was awesome. Boy did he inspire Skynryd to take it up a notch. They were just incredible that night. He was such a talented guitar player. At the time quaaludes, angel dust and Thai sticks was all the rage. In my opinion ... REO Speedwagon and Gary Richraft and his 59' Les Paul and Marshall stacks stole the show! At their peak and prime just kicked ass. This was before the AM pop shit. Luckily I didn't indulge to much cuz I didn't have much money and remember this event quite fondly. Ted was his usual maniac acting like a madman. Hate to say it but Foreigner was not that big at the time.
What you just wrote was amazing.
As I remember Foreigner was new...REO was awesome...Ted Nugent was Ted Nugent....Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best ever...IMO
So your saying if the camera angle was a little bit different then we might have been able to see you
I was there! Lucky enough to have a backstage pass! Ted Nugent, Foreigner & REO Speedwagon also on the bill that hot Summer day. Ronnie Van Zant gave me a high five before he headed up to the stage! 2 months later he was gone😢
We need more footage n audio of him less than just 2 months out, all these stories but no proof
One of the Greatest Bands Ever. Rock on.
I was there .
Yes sir so was I, to this day probably the greatest live performance I've ever seen.
@@davidfry1650 we parked in a open field and came out to our car being towed along with hundreds of others . Best concert of my life
I wasn't. Just small then.
Remember this show like it was yesterday. Magically event to say the least. Show started off by opener Rex fronted by Rex Smith later of tv show Solid Gold as a tv host then Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent and the main event Lynyrd Skynyrd. Fireworks going off in the parking lot and a bonfire on second base were people were dancing around. Remember Anaheim Fire Department bring a truck out on the field to put the fire out. Had to move thru a sea of bodies just to get to it. Had the front page from the Orange County Register paper for many years of how the attendance was broken on that summer day. Over 72,000 people at this show. Skynyrd rented some movie lighting equipment to light the stage with that night that's why the stage looks so bright in this film footage. This was being recorded for PepsiCo for a tv commercial they would put out to salute Lynyrd Skynyrd. And who knew just two months later on October 20,1977 this would all come down to a sad ending. Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane would run out of fuel and crash in Mississippi. Lost to that crash were singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister backup singer Cassie Gaines & road manager Dean Kilpatrick. I run a page dedicated to Steve Gaines on Facebook call A Tribute To Steve Gaines. Anyone interested in him, his sister Cassie or the Lynyrd Skynyrd band are welcomed to look us up and join. 😇
Only Pepsi knew, agenda
i was there too!! magic!! rest in love
Wow!!! I was there!!! Can’t believe I haven’t seen this before!!! The best of the best. I was in California last year(don’t tell the cops) and we road by the stadium. I was in complete awe. Hadn’t seen it since that show. 4 of us rented Hondas in San Diego and rode up to the show the night before. We all got scalped$20 for tix. We snuck into a boat dealership across the street and partied in a $60k speed boat all night! Sat behind home plate where it was safe. I swear I remember a fire started in front of the stage while the boys were playing!!!!
I was about 5 rowes back...perfect.
I was there front and center.
I was there with my crew Spiros, Pete, Anthony and Gene. It was a blast! Our first concert. Musical Geniuses and talent.
My first concert..I was 15
The circle on the infield was getting bigger and bigger .it was wild,I had, friends of past and present and all in between,,, what a memory, What a blast ! R.I.P Ronnie V.
I was there with my buddy Gary Loch, we were 14, took the bus as close as we could get from Long Beach. We didn't bring much money and it was an all day in to the night show. Some bikers on the field took pity on us and gave us some sandwiches. Amazing show. Ted Nugent was the headliner with, Lynyrd Sknynrd, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon and I think REX was the first act, I can't remember we were to busy trying to work our way to the front of the stage. I can't believe my parents greenlit that trip for me. My dad must have had no clue how huge that show was.
Yes I remember REX...they did a trampoline in the act with the guitar players...
I was there best concert ever
My first concert in LA Such an awesome memory!!
I was there and the entire day was beyond amazing!
Saw skynyrd 5 days before the plane crash in Hollywood Florida, still have my ticket stubs and concert shirt
I attended this great show as well👍♥️
I love this clip!! My fav is what I think is the voice of Allen Collins- he sums up LS perfectly!! ❤ Long live the music of Skynyrd!! ✌️🙌
Saw them Sunday, Oct 16, 1977 at the Bayfront Center in St Pete. Woke up Friday the 21st to the terrible news...
A friend of mine once asked me this:
What music can you play at a party where everyone that shows up will think, ‘It’s all good.’?”
“Easy. ‘Skynyrd’,” I answered.
I been listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd since i was a kid. I'm 44. I just found out about the plane crash last summer and even my heart sank. I never knew about that tragedy idk how.
I was there
I was there!!
Look at that crowd ROCK!
This is great!
I was there with my brother and still have my original ticket stub.
This in Oakland on the Green maybe you best live performance with crowd venue it's just hard to beat the energy at these two shows would be incredible to see this remade into a full concert from Anaheim
Great video thanks for sharing
When the movie Grease came out - they played this before the showing. Went ti the movie 2 or 3 times just to see this.
Wheelersburg cinema-
Live at the fox show was as important to guitar players as VH 1- Allen Collins ,Garry ,Steve and Ed king - guitar Hero’s!
Great footage!!! thanks for sharing :)
Awesome
Trav,
Thank you✌️
II was there.I got busted in the parking lot with Kingston. We managed to get an oz of hash in ,not a complete loss..I had buterflies from the begining to the end. Best show ever. I was 16 years young!
A Country and Blues Singer in a Rock and Roll band.......
I seen Lynyrd Skynyrd in '77 if I wanted the best concerts I've ever been to and I've been to a lot of concerts One of the worst lost to music ever speechless
I was there I was 15 years old in Anaheim Stadium. If you remember, there was Peter Frampton foreigner Aerosmith, the outlaws of course Lynyrd Skynyrd amazing
I was there and I was also high as a kite :) on the field
I was there. 2nd deck. I thought it was going to come down it was bouncing so much during Steve Miller and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Age 23 and I was passing a joint when I noticed that the hand i passed to had a black sleeve and I looked behind me and it was a police officer. He just wanted to kick out our friend who had not slept after working the night shift and was falling asleep when Skynyrd started. . .
thank you for all the skynard stuff you’ve been uploading. I’ll be seeing “them” perform this Friday but I know it’s not the real band, being 24 I don’t really have any other way to experience these songs in person.
it was worth it, they brought the house down.
As long as Gary Rossington is there, you're seeing an original. JVZ is a look alike to his brother and is a good singer, but not quite the same bluesy voice as his brother. Enjoy
@@FRAME5RS Rossington wasn't there unfortunately, they mentioned that he was having some heart issues during the show. regardless my brothers and I had a great time and I kept tearing up during their performance thinking about RVZ, Steve, Cassie, and the rest of the band. such a shame what happened to them in 77' and beyond.
@@imodium9822 Oh dear, yea his health is rough right now. A lot of heart issues. I saw them in 1977 as a teenager. If you put in "Lynyrd Skynyrd Aug 27, 1977 Anaheim Stadium" you will see the Pepsi commercial they filmed that night. They pan out to the crazy audience and I was in the middle of that mayhem on the ground not far from the stage. Makes being 62 worth it to have seen original line up back in the day.
@@FRAME5RS That's awesome, I'm so jealous. the set list for that show is killer, as you know; they opened with call me the breeze. DAMN!
🥰My birthday, August 27. 😥Stevie Ray Vaughn died the same day, 13 years later.
My birthday also will be 64 in 2023 So many memories are related to this band and there music. Was lucky enough to see them with Gary Rossington at a concert half mile from my hour August 27 2022 Gary was great and taken from us five months later. Thanks for the film and Skynyrd thanks for all the memories
I just wanna say something about the language as misleading for whatever reason but there was footage of their last live performance and it wasnt in California or wherever you have them playing .
In honest i saw the last performance and it was in Greenville SC at Memorial Coliseum so maybe this might let people who come here see and not be mislead and the footage i speak of was mostly destroyed in the plane crash but people know this i saw this band over 15 times and just like it should have been it was undeniably the best performance i ever saw them have and thanks for your time & peace to all who come here to see a great band
it's not me , it's you.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's Last "Video Performance". August 27th, 1977. Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
There last show was in Greenville SC. So, js. But would like to see that show on yt. I guess it's hidden lol
Two of the darkest hours of the 1970s for the Southern United States.
The sudden death of Elvis Presley.
The plane crash of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Greenville SC was their last show.
Last Video Performance.
there was six more shows after this one
There's something with Allen I can't get past
Allen wasn't from this world
Is there not a video of the freebird song from this concert??
Sadly there is but people gatekeep it
To be honest a full footage or at least audio leak of this show would be a game changer for all die hard lynyrd skynyrd fans, Fresno 1977 is NOT the last recorded performance, and we need the gatekeepers to release them now that all of them are gone
It's insane to me that in the digital age that people would have footage of such classic bands and not release it for the masses to enjoy. It's actually irritating honestly.
So where is the full concert it must been filmed probably won’t come out till the Johnny led Skynyrd band calls it a day
Looked like Allen broke a string or something, changed guitars, Explorer to double cut Les Paul Jr. Then back
I don't know..., I thought he only played the double cut LP in the Rossington Collins band. Later footage maybe?
@@gilldavidmour4199yeah looks like whoever spliced tape together, which is cool, I never remember him wearing that “pirate “ hat except with Rossington, Collins either
@@Fukna69 Exactly.
Was the Greenville concert not recorded?
How can I share too tictok
someone probably has all of it and is jelously keeping it for themselves who knows
