I was at this concert, 18 years old, just graduated high school. What a day it was. Music was hot, weather was hot, chicks were hot! So happy I was able to see Skynyrd in person before the devastating plane crash. They were so good and the best was still ahead of them. The songs/music the world lost, what a shame. Frampton and Santana were great that day too, great times that are long gone forever......
I was there too. I was only 13 years old and went with my friends who are 14 and 16 years old definitely was a hot day and the best concert I have ever been to!! Lynyrd Skynyrd completely rocked! Though I loved everybody that played that day! I really love Peter Frampton and Elton John and Santana but we were all there to see Lynyrd Skynyrd!! But I also really wanted to see Elton John. So many good memories of those days and the music. So glad I was able to be in that time.

The frame right at 14:12 is so striking. The camera comes from behind the girls on the shoulders to frame Allen there just ripping it up. Beautiful and powerful. Real people experiencing a real band.
Oh God yes, I want my 1977 back. I turned 12 that October 13th. The plane of the GREATEST BAND EVER- LYNYRD SKYNYRD went down 7 days later. That is 7 DAYS into my 13th YEAR. And as of the day of this July 77' concert, I had been playing guitar for about 2 weeks. Music became my life! Steve Gains is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so so sad his life was cut short that tragic day, but so wonderful to know that his talent just sneaked by as the 4th 6-steel string slinger of Skynyrd's lineup. People say, "Steve Gains would have become a legend!" No, he IS A LEGEND!
I loved the music so much! Went with some friends to the Tampa fairgrounds in '75 to see them. I had never heard of them. Their stage performance was full of heart and soul, just blew me away.....
I was there - I think I saw me in the crowd too! Anyway, I can assure everyone that no adults were harmed by the rebel flag backdrop seen in this video. Back then, we actually had some character, some sack and we weren't pussies. Oh, and the chicks were hot too, but we were all quite young then.
Man-o-man, you speak a lot of truth right there Brett. I couldn't have said it any better. It's so sad to see what a phony baloney shell of "open-minded culture" the SF Bay Area has descended into since these great times.
I agree with you 100%! I saw Skynyrd a couple of times in Oakland. I finally found someone selling Lynyrd Skynyrd Southern By The Grace of God Flags on eBay. I've looked for years. I bought 3 of those puppies. I WILL fly them PROUDLY! I live in the country in the Central Valley in Ca. And we are independent, tough, and gentlemen.
For everyone here bashing the liberal thinkers back then; I was there that day. We WERE the liberals, assholes. And so was Lynerd Skynerd. Whatever offends the people today, is the product of calculated divisiveness. We're not the sheep. You are. So fuck you. Sincerely, a Grandmother
Ronnie reached for the sky the words are a haunting reminder that we all ride a relationship till it bends or breaks then it ends ..The relationship with the Music and the band is as long as a great song . will never end .Ronnie and this music stand alone.
Missed this concert but attended 6 day on the green in Oakland CA. Lived 50 minutes away. Can’t believe how I long for those days and dream of the past.
I hope Gary's family feels the love and appreciation the fans have for this unique and outstanding talent and founding member of the greatest band in history
I'm 54 years old and have seen a lot of great RnR, but I have to say... this is the greatest performance I have ever seen anywhere, anytime by anybody... RIP all you guy that are gone, you were absolutely the GREATEST!!!
Johnny Reb Greatest rock and roll band to ever set foot on a stage, bar none.Mr.Van Zant was by far the greatest front man also. This line up only made one album together,Street Survivors,(my favorite)Can you imagine the albums they would've made?Long live The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band.Long live Ronald Wayne Van Zant.
Somewhere, out in that crowd, I was standing, with 4 of my shipmates. Had no idea who the hell these guys were. Found that out later after buying their LPs. We bought "dirt weed", that we smoked and smoked and smoked, and convinced ourselves we were high. Great concert that day.
in '77 I had some Japanese friends who a couple of them 1 time bought some weed, they couldn't understand why they didn't get high from it, so one of em asks me, being American, to check it out... I took a whiff in their baggie and told em, basically, they could put it on their pizza and eat it! I then explained how some dirtbags mixed cheap Mexican weed w/ basil & oregano... to sell it to unsuspecting "rookies", that's how it was explained to me in '75-'76. Yeah, life's a good teacher, hopefully people learn from experience.
Watching this was like you were there. How awesome they were. Just phenomenal. Why oh why did it have to end so tragically. Just doesn't seem fair. Tears and laughter came out of me when they went into the lead guitar parts. They were such great musicians and song writers. Just seemed like they were really great people, not perfect but who is? They were and still are my favorite band. Loved playing their music on guitar. Big influence in that. May we all meet each other in God's kingdom.
How blessed these people were to be able to see Lynyrd Skynyrd in person! Look at this amazing crowd! That's pure American right there! My heart goes out to the Skynyrd Family as I know this must be a hard day. Cheers to the best band EVER!
Collins and Gaines really seemed to enjoy performing together on that stage. Definately not to take anything away from King, but this was one awsome lineup!!
Artimus Pyle is still alive. Gary Rossington, the last surviving original member and last living person to play on the debut album, has became a Free Bird.
dogfish ale yeah I know this shows 2 hours and 1 minute long and I wish I had it all used to have it on VHS but now I'm fucking rumbled down the fucking RUclips with their little bit of fucking Cutthroat shit
This one has some great shots of the Honkettes, Cassie in the middle. I watch her and I think oh my god, you've been gone for 46 years, I just can't believe it. Too see her on stage with the girls doing their thing, Wow, That's so tough.
I was at this day on the green and 15 years at the time. Hearing this again really brings me back to such a wonderful time in my life. This was such an epic show including Peter Frampton, Santana, and The Outlaws. I had so much fun this day. Little did we know that Ronnie and others would die in a plane crash about two months later.
+Khataroo Aloha my friend. Yeah I was there too. One of my FAVS is when Graham brought ACDC to the Bay Area They opened DAG circa 78 and since I worked in a record store I opened that Mall (Serramonte) every day to WHOLE LOT OF ROSIE/ DIRTY DEEDS
So so blessed to be right up in the middle of all those feathered hair girls rockin out to this amazing band. Sun burnt to the max but a small price to pay to the rock gods! 3 months later it was over
.38 Special, with Ronnie's younger brother Donnie, had released their first studio album, 38 Special, two months before this concert. Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crash was October 20, 1977, three months after this concert and 5 months after .38 Special's first album. With this plane crash, all the members of .38 Special lost all of the "big brothers" that they had grown up around.
Bring back all the men and women that have given us such precious and priceless music !!I know that can’t happen, but it is a lovely thought. I miss the original Skynyrd lineup so badly😢😢😢
Back when you could fly the the Confederate flag and know one got butt hurt about it. People just got along and enjoyed the Music. Forever a Skynyrd fan!! :-) Peace
You're right Mary smith it does ROCK!! I was so lucky to be able to see so many of the coolest 70's bands. Being a teen in the SF Bay area back then was very cool. :))
+Richard Johnson He was a genius, wasn't he? But LS had been playing all over the country, and had hits, before BG added them into his Day On The Green concerts.
Steve is reallll good on guitar here with Sweet Home Alabama. I mean 'yes' the rest of the band as well, but that is some damn good guitar soloing along with that tone.
R.I.P Ronnie Van Zant 🎤🤘 R.I.P Steve Gaines 🎸🤟 R.I.P Allen Collins 🎸🤟 R.I.P Gary Rossington 🎸🤟 R.I.P Lion Wilkeson 🎸🤟 R.I.P Billy Powell 🎹🤟 R.I.P Cassie Gaines 🎤🤘
Saw this video for the 1st time today. A group posted on FB. I'm enjoying Sweet Home Alabama when all of a sudden I see myself and 3 friends sitting backstage (@4:28). What a total TRIP!!!
And Gary Rossington and Leon Wilkeson. Gary was the one along with Ed King and Ronnie that made this great song in their hell house a few years before this was shot.
Steve Gaines pushed Allen and Gary to new heights but there chemistry is undeniable. Steve is just my absolute favorite!!! Thank you Ronnie for having a dream and pursuing it for us to have the best rock band of all time.
Here it is 2024 & this popped up on my phone- love it . I never tire of Ronnie VZ & the band, sure thinking of Ed King as well. So many gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN! Rock in Peace you’all .
I was there that day. There were four bands that played in this order: The Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best. They had everyone stomping their feet to the music.
I always have mixed feelings when watching these old Skynyrd performances. On one hand, the music is brilliant and timeless. On the other hand, it is heartbreaking to watch this knowing what ghastly fate awaited these vibrant, talented young people only a short time later. Of the 10 band members on that stage, 3 died in their 20s, 1 in his 30s, 1 in his 40s, and 2 in their 50s. Sad.
We are all sad about what happened. But when I hear Skynyrd a huge grin comes across my face and I just let myself enjoy this great music. What a waste to just sit around and mourn and be sad. That's not what this music is about. It's about enjoying life and having a shit-kickin good time enjoying this timeless music. Put a stiff drink in my hand and turn it up as loud as possible and I'm in hog heaven with the biggest shit-eaten grin you ever saw. And I'll be toe tappin and knee slappin and singing to the top of my lungs
I was at this concert helping out back stage. This was one "ROCKIN" concert when Skynyrd hit the stage. It totally "SUCKS" to High Heaven that there will never be a concert like this again. I no longer got home from Oakland California to Columbus Ohio and I heard the breaking news of the plane crash. 109 days later and tragedy struck. As I watch them from the front in this video, It's shocking that not one of them had a clue what the short future held. God Bless them all and hope they have Heaven rockin for when we all get there...
Actually I believe it was Miss Hawkins, one of the Honkettes grandmother had A dream,a premonition type dream that the plane would crash and so Miss Hawkins refused to board and go with them that night and consequently she didn't crash in Mississippi with Ronnie,Cassie and Steve and the rest of the band and crew. Hman intuition is a powerful and strange thing. Another gift from the good Lord I guess. Take care.
@@feellucky271 ~ I saw an interview where several members didn't want to board the plane, but Ronnie told them "If it's your time, It's your time" and if they didn't get on the plane they were fired. That's why Miss JoJo Hawkins was fired from the group. I'm telling ya Mr. Lucky, after being back stage at that concert and flying back to Columbus Ohio about 5-6 weeks later and hearing the news of the crash, it rocked my world to a major extreme. I was bummed for a long time. I haven't been on a plane since...
I was there!!! 14 years old at my first Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum with my friends. Frampton headlining. Days on the Green were epic! Miss those days.
I was in the Navy and my ship just got in and the good hippie friend of mine from Berkeley said Lynyrd Skynyrd's playing but we didn't have tickets so we had to buy them from a scalper. That was the biggest and best concert I have ever been to and this old hillbilly has been so happy most of my life that I went.
Thanks to guys like you putting videos on RUclips it takes you back through history just for a short while I think the Lord that I was raised through the 60s and 70s then were some good days and years there was no household chemicals that people shot up their veins and standing on the street corners and intersections trying to attack cars these kinds of people are truly zombies. Yeah we parties I guess you would call us baby boomers but man we knew how to party naturally people done a little bit too much heroin and OD'd like then but nothing like today's era it was a little foggy even for me but I survived it because I knew when to put it down and go back to work after the weekend was up look around you today and see all the people that are on meth heroin and even fentanyl and you say there's not monsters?
Because Rolling Stone is a bunch of pansie asses that know nothing about playing guitar. This is the same magazine that had Nirvana solos in the top 100 and that’s comedy
who made that list clearly never listened to those 3 legends play together, gary, Allen and steve were super super talented, at least we still have gary, still going at nearly 70 years old.
What a brilliant live rock band they were. I was lucky enough to do front stage security (as a student I just enjoyed the gig and let the crowd go mad as I remember) at their De Montfort Hall gig in Leicester UK on Valentines day 1977 so just 5 months before this gig was filmed. I saw as it turned out their last ever original line up gig in the UK. Fantastic memories of an awesome live band.
Far frickin out!! Man those were the times.. the magical Days! Still trying to find myself in these videos. I always made it down to the front. Tube tops and super blonde feathered hair. That would be so cool to find me.
Kings of southern rock. Man to have been there I'd go back in time to immerse in the joy of Lynyrd Skynyrd and damn it warn ronnie don't get on that damn plane.... Huge loss....
"Kings of southern rock." I understand your opinion, they were truly great, I go with Allman Brothers Band, tho, personally; they were all great, though. I missed LSB in Philly, was too young to ever have seen ABB with Dwayne.
kewlbreez77 Skynyrd was more of a rock band and their influence was deeper than the Allmans. The Allmans were a good band, but they were just like the Grateful Dead. Jam on and on until you don't know what the hell your listening to. Skynyrd could write songs with meaningful lyrics with great licks and grooves. The Allmans made some great music, but I can't connect to their music. Two completely different bands.
Me too! Me and my friends layed down a blanket between Home and First Base. Just a couple of years out of high school. We made that little space our own for several years. Cheers!
Lynyrd skynyrd at their best, everybody in their right place. couldn't have ever played it better.

Well, there is somebody holding a Motorola at 0:27...
I loved the music so much! Went with some friends to the Tampa fairgrounds in '75 to see them. I had never heard of them. Their stage performance was full of heart and soul, just blew me away.....
@jeremygreen1526 it's my married name. My ex was from Ohio
@jeremygreen1526 how are you doing in 12/23
Lynyrd Skynyrd one of the best rock bands of all time. And I love the crowd in this video. Not all tatted up and no cellphones! Those were the days!
Some kids even eating apples
THE Best BAND of ALL-Time.........
@@troyperkins7051 No doubt about it
Man would I love to go back 40 years ..fun times that are long gone lol
I was there! They were awesome
all i can say is "Yes! Yes I will remember you Mr van Zant"
Steve Gaines & Alan Collins unbelievable !
STAN MADAY Allen
They were on fire!🔥🔥
Gaines left too soon. A great duo.
watching Steve and Allan together just jamming like crazy! That is just amazing!!
You're forgetting Gary rossington the best too
I was there - I think I saw me in the crowd too!
And I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t love skynyrd
and now were all getting old----er.
Killer performance! Some sweet guitar solos in there.
In my mind they were the best ever live band Thanks so much for this.
at their absolute peak here. Hard to believe it ended for this great band less than 4 months later....what a damn shame
Ronnie reached for the sky the words are a haunting reminder that we all ride a relationship till it bends or breaks then it ends ..The relationship with the Music and the band is as long as a great song . will never end .Ronnie and this music stand alone.
Great band. What else needs to be said
Pure classic Southern Rock , bless all y'alls hearts.
The place went nuts i will never forget that day
My friend Robin was in the front row
I don't think she knows she is in the video
Missed this concert but attended 6 day on the green in Oakland CA. Lived 50 minutes away. Can’t believe how I long for those days and dream of the past.
I was there! 13 years old and my first concert. Two of my sisters took me for my 8th grade graduation present.
Too awesome for words
THANKS FOR PUTTING THIS ON UTUBE IT IS REALLY HEART TOUCHING. RIP
glad there music lives on for my grandchildren to enjoy
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the greatest American band ever assembled. Back then I know they would blow the doors off any band on the bill, even Led Zeppelin.
I remember that Mexican dirt weed from back in the day, gave you a headache...paraquat
That right there is how it’s done boys and girls!!!
seen skynyrd 3times in Seattle talk about a melt down the whole night built up to freebird and air guitar was invented
Santana; Lynyrd Skynyrd; Peter Frampton all in their primes and all performing on stage that day. What an awesome experience for concert-goers.
RONNIE ALWAYS TOOK BOOTS OFF BEFORE GETTING ON STAGE . FEELING THE ROCK!!!
All the good die young sorry
Artimus Pyle is still alive. Gary Rossington, the last surviving original member and last living person to play on the debut album, has became a Free Bird.
13:21 one of the best jams in history begins
dogfish ale yeah I know this shows 2 hours and 1 minute long and I wish I had it all used to have it on VHS but now I'm fucking rumbled down the fucking RUclips with their little bit of fucking Cutthroat shit
13:13
This one has some great shots of the Honkettes, Cassie in the middle. I watch her and I think oh my god, you've been gone for 46 years, I just can't believe it. Too see her on stage with the girls doing their thing, Wow, That's so tough.
The best band in history to this day!!!
+Khataroo I was ther too!. I was 17 years old. Good times, good memorises!
+Khataroo I was not there but I feel like I was. Maybe my soul was....
+Khataroo My very first concert after graduating High School (Daly City) Stoned off my ass
Day on the Green----Peter Tosh/ Edie Money/ Santana/ Rolling Stones78 Mick's bday and very late
I was 17 and was able to experience Santana, Frampton and Skynyrd for less than $20! HEAVEN!
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
Man that had to of been a AWESOME Concert .So many times i wish I could of seen them
I was there. Great concert. 18 years old. Good times for sure!
Lynyrd Skynrd was just cool!!! They just went up to play and didn't put showing their ass to the forefront! . . I like that!
3 words for ya :)...............TURN IT UP
10:16 Billy Powell, whom "made" Lynyrd Skynyrd the best -- a pure master of the piano.
Omg Allen’s guitar solo😲😍 the music of my awakening⚡️ sooo freaking badass
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
For me, the greatest band---EVER!
Al D for many.
Secon that Motion...
I was born in 98... and I can gladly say . This is real and good and soul music.
Back when you could fly the the Confederate flag and know one got butt hurt about it. People just got along and enjoyed the Music. Forever a Skynyrd fan!! :-) Peace
HOT Damn!!! That was good!! I was there, but never woulda thought I'd be watching it all these years later on RUclips. :-)) Thanks so much!!
Georgia Wilder Wish we was back in the 70's! Man this Rocks!
You're right Mary smith it does ROCK!! I was so lucky to be able to see so many of the coolest 70's bands. Being a teen in the SF Bay area back then was very cool. :))
+Georgia Wilder yea
+Georgia Wilder sweet home Alabama not the title song
***** Love your profile picture! ♡ My son Derek made that sweet cat animation. 🐱
Thank you Bill Graham If it wasn't for him having the presence of mind to film this great band alot of people would'nt have seen them.
+Richard Johnson
He was a genius, wasn't he?
But LS had been playing all over the country, and had hits, before BG added them into his Day On The Green concerts.
Steve is reallll good on guitar here with Sweet Home Alabama. I mean 'yes' the rest of the band as well, but that is some damn good guitar soloing along with that tone.
R.I.P Ronnie Van Zant 🎤🤘
R.I.P Steve Gaines 🎸🤟
R.I.P Allen Collins 🎸🤟
R.I.P Gary Rossington 🎸🤟
R.I.P Lion Wilkeson 🎸🤟

R.I.P Cassie Gaines 🎤🤘
I was at this show...Just amazing.
Me too!
I saw em like 3 weeks before this at jfk stadium in Philly dickey Betts j geils band an Frampton also that day
Saw this video for the 1st time today. A group posted on FB. I'm enjoying Sweet Home Alabama when all of a sudden I see myself and 3 friends sitting backstage (@4:28). What a total TRIP!!!
I wish i was around during the 70s, cherish your moments!
Susan McKenna backstage? 4:28 is a shot of the crowd. Regardless, how jealous am I not to have been around during this era!!!
Comon people, it don’t get any better than three screaming lead guitars. Miss you guys so much.
God damn, Steve could play that guitar !!!!
TGM9A1 allen Collins as well! rip to them both
And Gary Rossington and Leon Wilkeson. Gary was the one along with Ed King and Ronnie that made this great song in their hell house a few years before this was shot.
The best Guitarist Skynyrd ever had
Allen Collins wrote the song with Van Zant
How can anyone follow THAT?!
Frampton had to be a let down
Green Grass and High Tides
I always have mixed feelings when watching these old Skynyrd performances. On one hand, the music is brilliant and timeless. On the other hand, it is heartbreaking to watch this knowing what ghastly fate awaited these vibrant, talented young people only a short time later. Of the 10 band members on that stage, 3 died in their 20s, 1 in his 30s, 1 in his 40s, and 2 in their 50s. Sad.
Yes same here so sad
Very sad and very disturbing!
In deutsch: das wirft einige Fragen über unsere Gesellschaft auf! It s the same in Switzerland: Society really sucks
We never know what not where life has in store for us.
there IS NOTHIN MORE AWESOME THAN THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE
i was there, sitting behind home plate about 10 rows up
I was at this concert helping out back stage.
Hi Steve , do you know of any other videos of this concert ??
I was there!!! 14 years old at my first Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum with my friends. Frampton headlining. Days on the Green were epic! Miss those days.
Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you here.
This is a real rock band with real rock stars!
I was there for this awesome show. Great band!
lucky girl!
Janice Zinky YOU go girl. ....I wanna hear more! !!!
Perfection and nothing but!!!!❤✌
I was there that day
Wish you would tell us a little about your experience there? That had to be one concert that feels like it happened yesterday for you.
I was there!!
Don't know how Allen, Steve, and Gary are not in Rolling Stones top 100 guitar players
They are in my Book!
It's a damn shame.... Gary and Allen for sure should be high on that list
What a band!
The Best!
Johnny C You got that right!
How close was the audience to the front of the stage ??
Far frickin out!! Man those were the times.. the magical Days! Still trying to find myself in these videos. I always made it down to the front. Tube tops and super blonde feathered hair. That would be so cool to find me.
Ah man, this really captures the 70's vibe in so many ways, so glad I grew up in that era!
WOW!
I was at that show. It was an epic day for me.
Me too! Me and my friends layed down a blanket between Home and First Base. Just a couple of years out of high school. We made that little space our own for several years. Cheers!
I was there too..wish I could rewind back lol
