sad to think that people dont know him as well as Zakk Wilde well known as " the guitarrist that always plays the fucking same chords making any fucking song as a solo having always him the protagonism"
So true. His solo on Free Bird stands alone. I saw him about a year before he died while on tour w/Skynyrd, and even though he was in a wheelchair, you could see he still wanted to play guitar. Rock On Allen Collins!
Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of my all time favorite songs, grew up listening to this southern rock band and have tons of memories, wish we could go back to our younger days!! For Duane Allman~RIH to all of these amazing singers and musicians!! Peace and Blessings to All!!! 💙🎶💯🙏🕊️💙
Allen and Gary a force to be reckoned with! Billy on the piano awesome, Artimus on drums!! Mr. Ronnie Van Zant, OMG, THEY ALL WERE TOTALLY THE BEST....
if you know you know when you hear play it pretty just who it is its the honorable mr . RONALD WAYNE VAN ZANT thank you for all your genius ,way ahead of your time and did not care RIP
It's so interesting to listen to the different Renditions of Freebird live all the way from 1973 to the last time they would ever play it live in 1977. After reading up on various articles comments and interviews from band members road crew and fans of course that were there I've taken all of that into account the big-time hangovers fighting drinking drugging injuries depression mental illness lack of sleep and malnutrition but they always persevered and that's just a massive testament to the talent they had the tough love Brotherhood and the deep love of music
I am an old Marine Vietnam Sniper & i give you my word this would have been the best band in history. They still are but Ronnie ran a tight ship and kept the band high when time was right and would get on their ass if they were late for practice, RIP Larry Reeves USMC VIETNAM SNIPER 69-70
This music still brings tears to my eyes, and that's without even considering I only saw them twice (73, 74) before the crash. I never thought I'd see a version as good as they played in Atlanta in 73 (on the Who tour), but there are at least two on youtube that are close (this is one). There are only a couple of mis-steps here. Truly a thing of beauty. Allen and Gary were always a trip to watch (Allen's energy vs Gary's cool). Dang, I miss this band.
That's been almost a year, but I'm pretty sure I was thinking of the BBC Old Gray Whistle Test version, which is not currently on youtube that I can find, save for a version with horrible audio. You can find it other places if you search google for something like "lynyrd skynyrd old gray whistle test freebird". There's a version on youtube labeled as OGWT, but it's a BBC broadcast of their Hamburg show. You want the one with Ronnie wearing a hat; it has the OWGT prominently in the background, along with a rebel flag. Were you at the 1973 Atlanta concert?
I stopped by here tonight at the exact time according to those who survived the ill fated flight of Lynyrd Skynyrd 39 years ago today on October 20th 1977. Tonight is October 20th 2016 6;48 PM & it marks 39 years to the day & time of this tragic event. I don't call this an anniversary as I think of happy times when the word anniversary is mentioned. And to me, a plane crash & the loss of lives shouldn't be something we should call happy times. So I stopped by here tonight to here the best lyricist & song writer of all time IMO Sir Ronnie Van Zant. I just felt that now was the time to do this & I would like to think Ronnie would've wanted it that way. As for Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Dean, & to all those in later years whom we lost over the years in the greatest band in the world, lets ALL take time tonight to say a prayer & remember them. And to thank them all for all this absolute GREAT MUSIC they blessed us with. IMO this was Ronnie's gift too all of us & what a great gift he blessed us with. And myself, play it pretty for the big man up above. What song is it you wanna here?
Who else still gets so into the original Skynyrd in 2020? Adding Billy & his piano & later the Honkettes were some of the best things to happen to the band!
RIP the ten members of Lynryd Skynyrd Ronnie Van Zant (January 15, 1948 - October 20, 1977), aged 29 Steve Gaines (September 14, 1949 - October 20, 1977), aged 28 Cassie Gaines (January 9, 1948 - October 20, 1977), aged 29 Larry Junstrom (June 22, 1949 - October 5, 2019), aged 70 Ed King (September 14, 1949 - August 22, 2018), aged 68 Bob Burns (November 24, 1950 - April 3, 2015), aged 64 Gary Rossington (December 4, 1951 - March 5, 2023), aged 71 Leon Wilkeson (April 5, 1952 - July 27, 2001), aged 49 Billy Powell (June 3, 1952 - January 28, 2009), aged 56 Allen Collins (July 19, 1952 - January 23, 1990), aged 37 You will be remembered as legends.

+ajberdan i had a ticket to that tour but they crashed before they got here, sad day then and sad day today but Jimmie has got his wings now, rest in peace dear ones
What days of glory for Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band at that time was so fresh and had so much energy at the concerts, it was new every album that appeared between 1973-1977 was legendary, this band would have gone far away if it was not it was the tragedy of October 20, 1977, when Steve Gaines,Cassie Gaines and Ronnie van Zant, who was the heart and soul of the band, died. The current band seems to me to be aged and sing only for the time of the hit, I watched the concerts this year gary rossington who is a remarkable man, and the only one of the original no longer has the energy they have in that time well here comes in and the age when I was wasting my notes I was so disappointed that this means lynyrd skynydr died a lot, and Johnny's younger brother will never rise to Ronnie's level. His musical career has meant playing songs by his brother I personally respect because all the time at the concerts he gives all the best of it, but it's hard to equate Ronnie, but the orc remains johnny a great singer.
Steve again best of all and I saw stones at there best led most of the rest special the second time i.saw stfreedom hall Louisville it closed freebies 45 minutes when lights came on nobody moved 15 minutes
Awesome! This is so fricking hot!... never tire of this great song! Damn what a great guitarist! Hell what a high! ... 72 & still love this band very much! Gone way 2 damn soon!!!! Never got 2 c em live! ❤️from 🇺🇸🔥🔥🔥👍
If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be traveling on, now Cause there's too many places I've got to see But, if I stayed here with you, girl Things just couldn't be the same Cause I'm as free as a bird now And this bird you can not change Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh And this bird you can not change And this bird you can not change Lord knows, I can't change Bye, bye, baby, it's been a sweet love Though this feeling I can't change But please don't take it so badly Cause Lord knows I'm to blame But, if I stayed here with you, girl Things just couldn't be the same Cause I'm as free as a bird now And this bird you'll never change Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh And this bird you can not change And this bird you can not change Lord knows, I can't change Lord help me, I can't change Lord, I can't change Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah
Thanks for posting this 1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd video. The sheet music for Billy Powell's terrific piano solo (which starts at 3:02) can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
Someone said this is one of the best versions ever,, I would agree. After watching a few 74 gigs Allen was just as fast but more technical in 74, and he had Ed and Gary on SG's adding in those melodic notes, that Allman, Deadhead, sound and it was great, but on this concert Allen actually carries the whole load basically. He is playing near out of control speed, and then out of nowhere he looks up and I start hearing Ed Kings freaking SG! Except Ed King aint there! Allen Collins was doing it himself in this video! Now I won'tt exaggerate this only happened 2-3 times but it was stunning that he just stopped mid solo and changed the pattern at 120mph. Too much as been made of the 3 guitar attack and at times it was used as a crutch, sometimes it blitzed, have Ed turn into Duane Allman for a couple minutes, then jump back to Gary rotating between his Normal Les Paul and an SG, then over to Allen on an Explorer, and sometimes it was disjointed and sometimes perfect and sometimes a mess of overlapping noise. I prefer Rossington Collins handling the load, all you have to do is watch this video in awe. If Ed would have stayed another couple years it would have been nice but despite his beautiful playing I never thought he fit in with two other players. Just tell Allen to do it! Hehe. Can't improve on greatness with numbers.
All seven of these guys we're incredibly talented with some pretty strong ass fortitude and just Limitless man on so many levels and to reach those degrees and then finding the will to push through just says so so much I could sit here and speak big words but you could sum it up really with just one unbelievable but it happened
