Summary:
After years of life on the road and with their role models, the Allman Brothers Band, struggling to survive the deaths of two of its most distinctively talented members, today Lynyrd Skynyrd has become the quintessential Southern Rock band. Under the leadership of frontman and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, the group's melodic lyric driven ballads and power driven hard rockers would catapult the group into one of the most popular touring bands in the world. The group's distinctive guitar attack, combined with an overtly defiant and rebellious attitude, gave them a cultural identity that would help make songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" into anthems of American rock music and staples of FM radio right up to the present day.
Headlining a bill that also featured the Outlaws, this Winterland recording captures Lynyrd Skynyrd following the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. This was during a transitional phase for the band, following the departure of guitarist Ed King, but prior to his replacement, Steve Gaines, coming on board. The band was carrying on as a six-piece unit, augmented by the Honkettes on backing vocals.
This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs.
Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best.
The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close.
"Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music. - Видеоклипы
Never heard such great guitarists, drummer, bass, and keyboard not to mention sing ever assembled in one group. We will never see that again.
And it was still fashionable to display The Confederate battle flag. You commies can think long and hard on that one.
Nope probably not these guys were once in a life time group
@@Confederate127 Now that I've thought about it long and hard, the Confederate flag represented the LOSERS of the civil war and everything they stood for. Correct? But your allegiances confuse me. What exactly are you saying? Are you a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan? They sang about getting rid of guns in Saturday Night Special. They "boo, boo, booed" the governor of Alabama, George Wallace. My friend, Lynyrd Skynyrd were Democrats and liberals... all the pot smoking way!! Lol.
I have no allegiance to that flag, just pointing out a time when things weren’t so politically correct. A lot of people died under that banner, it was only ever carried into battle. Enjoy your weed.

Can't get get enough Skynyrd!!! The best band ever! Love & Peace
Always !!
can only love these sexy mothersucker!!!
That opening riff by Rossington was badass
When I watch vintage skynyrd concerts brings tears they were so good it's unbelievable
I couldn’t agree more. These guys were just absolute killer musicians, every one of them, and live, just flawless. When it comes to the best music ever made, the 70’s, they belong right up there with Zep, Sabbath, Purple, ZZ Top etc. Such a tragic loss that Oct. night.
Me 2 🕯
Those were the best days of rock ‘n’ roll
Nobody does it better than the original Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alan Collins was just electrifying.
Second to.....NONE
@@dougadamwired2don't forget Artimus Pyle on the drums one of the only members that survived the crash and that is still alive today!!! And by the way you should get your facts together the first guy to kick into the solo was Gary Rossington was one of the few that survived the plane crash,,, recently died. Sadly Skynyrd is now a cover band. The youngins seeing them live in concerts now this summer or future have no idea; no Ronnie Van Zant(writer singer of all songs) no Billy Powell no Allen Collins no Rossington,no Steve or Cassie Gaines who died in the plane crash.... even Ed King who wrote Sweet Home Alabama and several other songs died few years ago. Watch the Skynyrd documentary Gone with the Wind
@@natev1956I agree. Who is the second solist after Rossington in this song?
@@ashini9511 Hughie Thomason of the OUTLAWS, and Billy Jones is the other one, Billy boy.

What a rare find here. This is probably the best performance of this song Skynyrd ever gave. And Steve Gaines wasn't even in the band yet! It is such a damn shame that plane went down, because at the time, no other band in the world could touch them. Skynyrd was so much better than everybody else it's not even fair.
@Allyson Batchelor the way he gets such enjoyment and showed such enjoyment to his band was so freaken cool.
An Billy Bob on piano, just when you were thinking how hot is that piano.
thats what seperated him from the rest.
wahoo....
@Allyson Batchelor I think you ment Knebworth.
That's WHY the plane went down
Well, some boys from Australia were allready active... so no - somebody would and could reach them. But otherwise - i agree :)
Yes it was 👍
Don’t get the credit they deserve, just look at the music they put out in a very short time, musical Genius all of them so many great riffs, crazy leads And lyrics, just blows my mind! Even the songs that weren’t a commercial success are awesome!
I got a big ol grin watching Allen take over the jam
Artimus Pyle works them drums like A BOSS !
I was thinking the same
This is my favorite Skynyrd song i dont care if they didnt write it....
I get that
with Hughie Thomasson & Billy Jones from The Outlaws :) Nice!

Thanks for the info. I was wondering who they were.
Steve must have joined shortly after.
Was at a concert in Seattle with Skynard and Outlaws and they had 6 lead quitars on stage join for a few songs. Long time ago.
mrbigsaw Wow, that’s so FC, for a minute I was wondering too. Then it hit me....
Damn! Just think of it. If that plane crash had never happen..there quite possibly be a " QUAD GUITAR FORCE" One of these guys would had been Hired by LS. Ohh the possibilities of the 1980's.
@@johngullo9420 I believe Steve Gaines joined in mid 1976, probably three months after this performance. Hughie T. would eventually join LS later on.
Gary Rossington showing everybody how it’s done!

They took an old country song and made it into a kick ass rock and roll jam.
This was impressive.
It’s a perfect match. A kick-ass A-plus band, playing the blues, & singing some quintessential southern country blues lyrics!
I listened to the Jimmy Rogers version. Pure Genius what Skynyrd made that into.
Indeed. That song came from before there were records to record on. Jimmy was a bridge to the days before records. Its super cool to see these guy tip their hat to traditon at time when rock & roll was the biggest thing ever.

Allen Collins was just an incredible talent. Listen to the sound he gets out of that Firebird. Downright disgusting at times. Stage presence of a maniac. His playing and much harder than it looks and so unique, too
dylan009 any firebird player is my friend best guitar Gibson ever made at least til 1998 !
Thank you. Sometimes I feel Allen's doesnt get enough praise. He is truly special. He adds so much but never too much. He finds his spot in the music and adds special touches. His stage presence is spectacular. Hurts my soul that he ended up in a wheelchair.
@@linda8244 Sad that he passed away too. He was an amazing guitar player.

You have to watch this. Never understood why the record company removed this song to get “One more from the Road” to fit on one CD, but it was on the vinyl release. Just an awesome jam. When you think the guitar jamming is over then Billy Powell just turns it up on the piano. Also I never realized how good Artimis Pyle was on the drums until watching this.

Never replaced, never duplicated .Listened to all their stuff back when I joined my first country band...Dirt Creek in Asheville N.C. Really a fantastic band to look up to and emulate. We'd start off with Guitar Boogie by Arthur Smith and somehow it would always morph into T for Texas and we tried to sound as close as we could get to the live version recorded in the Fox Theater in Atlanta ,Georgia. Perfection. Such great talents taken from us at such a young age.
This was taken a year and half before their demise. We are so lucky to have film on this band. One of the most controversial but fun and growing acts. They were kicking everybody's ass cumming up thru the mid to late 70's. 4 years folks that's it.

+AZRacer2000 Absolutely!
Yes sir ...totally !!! I love the way he handles that Firebird.... He looked so cool with that guitar....
Allen was the best!
Gary Rossington and Allen Collins were both damned good, but they each had their own style. Collins was more of a rocker and Rossington was more of a country style guitarist. I discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd right after they issued their second album called Second Helping, with the original version of Curtis Loewe, IIRC. I'm an old fart now, but I remember seeing them at the San Diego Sports Arena with the Outlaws as their opening act. My mom (may she rest in peace) took me to that concert, and we were both half-deaf for 3 days after. It was the 70's; if you weren't there, it's impossible to explain.
I considered Leon to be one of the best bass players around..i mean,to have to keep up with 3 leads like that..and he did it with ease...
