I was lucky enough to be in the audience for this show with only 70-100 people watching. The tickets were free and we had no idea who we were going to see. What we got was one of the best Lynyrd Skynyrd performances, just amazing
The ORIGINAL Lynyrd Skynyrd, There will never be another. Each member was incredibly talented. Damn I was so lucky to have been brought up in the late60s, 70s. BEST MUSIC EVER!!! Anyone agree??
Living in MJ, I got to know Charlie Daniels. He was good friends with RVZ. Charlie told me Ronnie always though Johnny was a better vocalist.. Johnny kept his brother's legacy alive for generations.. Then .38 special.. The Van Zant family is legendary.
This band never got the recognition that they rightly deserved, I think mainly it was because where they came from and that they always played in front of the Confederate flag, I think that turned alot of people off, especially in todays liberal society!!!!🤔
Not especially. In all decades you can find good music. You had Jazz, blues, soul, funk, rock'n'roll, then rock, hard rock, heavy metal, metal and all its movements, hip hop, rap.. What's important is to keep open minded music. Peace n up to the first Skynyrd period.
True true and true. Rolling stone is a joke. But any magazines or review is done by critics. And critics tend to be artsy fartsy trying to be ahead of the curb type of people. And in that vain you can probably understand why Skynyrd didn’t get much credit from them. There’s nothing original about them. I like Skynyrd well enough but take a band I live like Zeppelin and rolling stone didn’t like them either because they really weren’t attempting anything Cream already hadn’t done. AC/DC same deal. Great straight forward rockin roll bands but nothing new and in the cases of AC/DC and Skynyrd not even really a virtuoso in the bands. So I guess what I’m saying is at least they’re consistent
Gary and allen were the best duo guitar players in history imo every time they trade off licks like in simple mans solo its just amazing how they fed off eachother and i love allen but damn garys leads might me more overlooked than allens
Im a professional music analyst. I study music on LSD and nitrous. I study hard too. And I can definitively say that Lynyrd Synyrd is the greatest American Band of all time. Jimi Hendrix is by far better on his own but as a band they didn't gel like this crew. I can't put The Grateful dead ahead of them either. Bob Weir is your 2nd best guitarist? I just can't do it. When it comes to America, Lynyrd Skynyrd comes out on top in my list. Gel tabs and blue specials my D.O.C.
There is a reason the late great Metallica bassist Cliff Burton held Skynyrd on such a pedestal and loved Leon Wilkeson's bass playing so much. DON'T YOU HEAR IT? THE BEST!!
2 microphones taped to the stand, stylish hats and threads, smoking in the audience, a shirtless Artimus, rip roaring and smooth guitar solos by Allen and Gary, honky tonk piano from Billy, bass grooves and backing vocals from Leon and the legend that is Ronnie Van Zant in full frontman mode.... truly amazing! This band was so talented, tight and exceptional at the time. The love and passion they bring to the songs cannot be underestimated. Thank you so much Michelle for sharing these great live moments with us. May their music live forever.
Billy is HIGHLY underrated. In every song he plays, he never stops playing. There is always some kind of piano lick playing in the back (good example of this is Comin Home). Plus he plays his complex solos really close to the studio version.
That always seems to get lost - great point. From experience if your rhythm section is in the pocket/dead in in the groove you can just float over it - makes it easy.
I was fortunate growing up in Atlanta this band from Jacksonville, Florida played the circuit there when I was coming of age in 1971-74. I especially recall seeing them at a club called Funoccios on Peachtree St. in Midtown. Their sets consisted of tunes later to become famous i.e. "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone", "Free Bird", etc. They were thunderously awesome, Ed King was with them on guitar and Leon Wilkeson on bass (Steve Gaines would come much later). I recall Ronnie at the mike with a bottle of whiskey in one hand taking gulps now and then and singing with fire, they were very, very tight as a band. I followed them on through to the plane crash in late 1977 and was then living in Mississippi where the plane went down. That was devastating. They came back in several incarnations as a band, but never the same as that original group. "I dig you Georgia peaches..." partial line in "The Breeze". They did spend lots of time in Georgia and along with my friends we will be forever remembering and thanking them.

All accurate . I was the biggest Led Zeppelin fan my whole life . I now feel that Skynyrd was a better band . I still love Zeppelin very much but imagine them trying to play Achilles last stand live in 1977 . Or many of the tracks from Physical graffiti . Zep was a great studio band but I heard from to many geezers that they sounded terrible live from 1975 on for a few reasons . Ronnie van Zant was just the best , most totally in charge (Field General) / frontman I've ever seen . Also a real overall genteman professionally .The band was so well rehearsed they sounded better live than the records .
Ronnie was such a natural and fantastic band leader. He knew how to control the stage and steer the band. Notice how he grabs Gary and Allen by the backs of their shirts and walks them to the front of the stage for their solo jams. That's the sign of a great front man right there.
That is was and forever remains the definitive example of who truly ran THAT show! Both cracks you up and gives you pause. Brilliant. You can almost hear him thinking "Alright, boys, reign it in NOW!" Yes sir.
The Marshall Tucker band of the mid 70s lineup with Brothers toy and Tommy Caldwell Manning the guitars also were fantastic and Southern down to their bones
This recording kicks ass Alan could make a fire bird scream and a Stratocaster cry they were unbelievable I missed that band that was Lynyrd Skynyrd not today’s version
Todays music can't even come close to comparing to these guys and many other 70s rock and roll bands!!! Skynyrd is legendary!!!! Rip Ronnie, u were the best!!!!❤🎸
C_Capone - damn right brother ‘ been a skynyrd fan nearly upon birth and they can play pronounced at my wake! I’m a Florida boy through and through and they’re my band and Ronnie was the best vocalists and rock band leader of the greatest rock band period!!
I think it can. Something that a lot of people don't think of is that this... sound has been extensively explored/covered by lot of groups already. There are plenty of newer, very dedicated and accomplished groups/artists who are every bit as good as the 'ole boys like Skynard - they're just not nearly as well known because it's not what sells today. Back then, the music that Skynard and others had was HUGE! It made lots of people lots of money. Now, not so much which is why it's not everywhere. These newer artists have their own sound and it can be every bit as hard charging and guitar screaming as what was prevalent the 60's/70's! I grew up on this music even though I was born in '78 and it's taken me a long time to get out of the mindset that it was the best.. It definitely rocks for sure, but music is a constantly growing/changing evolution. I love both old and new!
Let me tell you my story of meeting the very might Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976. My brother and I went to see a newly formed band how just came over from the USA which was made up of the drummer and base player Stu Cook and Doug Clifford from Creedence Clearwater Revival, they play a gig in Hemel Hampstead. At a guess there was no more the 20 people at this gig. The music the band played was rubbish and a great disappointment as I was expecting better from 2 members of my favorite band. At the end of their set most people had left, we were about to leave when the 2nd curtain was pulled back on the stage and their stood 7 or so rockers with 3 backing singer. The very moment we heard the very first notes played we were in shock. We did not have a clue about this band it was only during the show Ronnie VanZan explained that it was a warm up gig and that they were supporting the Stones the next day at Knebworth. For the next few days we told many people our story but we did not know the name of the band at that time What a great surprise, It was one of the very best gigs I ever been to. We went to see they many times after this, never a bad gig from those boys, RIP to you boys, I bet you are still paying and kicking up some dust down in the Kingdom Hall
@James I lived in the Florida panhandle from January of 1970 - June of 1974 ages 9-13 -and never heard Skynyrd on the radio. I can't figure out why. I remember all the popular songs of the day except theirs.
The terrible thing about Lynyrd Skynyrd most folks got lost on Free Bird( great song) this band right here is the tightest band playing the Greatest R&R any night every night Skynyrd might be the best ever Evidenced here Thanks for sharing...
There will never be another rock band that will compare to the original skynyrd. They sound so tight and they wrote songs that I can relate to, unlike modern day bands. Sure would have liked to seen them live, but this video was the next best thing.
Modern day bands write many songs you can relate to. You are just too narrow minded to go look for them. That’s fine, though. You stay stuck in the past and I’ll keep up with the times.
Yep! Allen gets the glory and rightfully deserved, but Gary's style, though different, is also SO good. I think he's just as talented in his own way. His slower leads are just gorgeous and full of feeling, but there are times he gets to let loose and show his chops. Lord he's got 'em! Technical and clean every time. Allen's underrated but so is Gary. And Ed King was terrific too. AND Steve Gaines was beginning to show his own brilliance. The best multi-guitar combo of all time, with Duane and Dickey a close second. Of course I'm leaving out Clapton and Duane in Derek and the Dominoes - a class by themselves but only one album.
Excellent, I was just wondering....who in their right mind would watch a great show like this and give it a thumbs down? Don't like our era of music, just move on and find what you like. Again...EXCELLENT SHOW.
Only one word best fits this band. Tight. The Who said they were all accomplished players. The Stones got their asses handed to them. No one wanted to follow them. I remember being 8 or so and had a tape of street survivors. It turned me on to how a band really sounds. Zep AcDc Fleetwood Jethro all Incredible artists. But you can literally hear friendship coming through with these guys. Sad ain't it. How the music industry has decided what we wanna hear. RIP Dixie Boys. Thank You for the gift you left us and future generations.
The corporations had been doing this sh*t even back in Elvis' day. It's amazing that any of these groups got through to the public. The mega-pop festivals, however, provided a venue that the corps could not control. Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Grand Funk Railroad and many of these other bands found their audiences for the first time in those settings. Joplin at Monterey, and Grand Funk at the Atlanta pop festival. The Allman brothers found their audience playing for Southern college crowds at $300 a show in 69 and 70.
One of the strangest gigs I went to Dane was at The Rainbow in London where the promoters seemed to have got things very wrong... Lynyrd Skynyrd were the support act for Golden Earring... The Rainbow was packed out but after Skynyrd finished their brilliant hour long set the Rainbow was suddenly less than half full as everyone seemed to vanish and go elsewhere... Felt sorry for Golden Earring....A couple of weeks later the people who promote gigs properly, finally got it right and had Lynyrd Skynyrd back at the Rainbow - this time headlining... I was lucky to see them at both gigs and then a little later at Knebworth supporting a very very late ( midnight or so ) Rolling Stones... 220000 people there for that one.
EnosEverything Is that the concert with Steve Gaines? From what I understand is these guys just showed up whooped ass and the following act had the put the stage fires out. That's how hot they got. Steve was a great addition to the band.
The Rainbow line-up was the famous L.S. band pre-Gaines - At Knebworth I honestly have no idea who played in that gig although I should know as their is a very famous film clip of them performing Sweet Home Alabama at an open air gig with thousands of people there and that's almost certainly the Knebworth gig... 1976... Todd Rundgren's Utopia were on prior to them... 10cc on next.
This is one of their periods when they were down to the original two guitar players Alan and Gary. Ed king had just left and Steve Gains didn't join up until the following year. Even though that three guitar lineup adds the cherry and allows for more double solos and a fuller dynamic, they still pull it off just amazingly as they would.
In this period the band got out of control offstage fueled by their manager supplying them with booze and coke hence the departure of Ed King. Drummer Burns lost his mind in a previous trip to London before Artimus came in.
Oh yes - this guitarist Alan Collins might have looked goofy ,being lanky ,tall and wild hair but this dude just wailed the shit out the guitar and made skynyrd that great sound ,ed king, gary Rosington and Steve Gaines all kicked ass big time too!
@@craigjackson5903 Sad he and Gary aren't jamming together still, hate to think some Trumptard dumbshit got between them because the two of them were brothers even though they were opposites.

Cheryl Mcmurray who knew the way music would fall apart the way it did! There really aren’t to many concerts that would get me excited to go see ! But I do have cherished memories of great rock and roll bands like this! I never got to see them cause my concert going didn’t start till early 1980 but I can brag I got to see some special bands all the same! I swear just watching this on the internet I know they would have topped my list! Would have loved to go back in time and see the Doors and Allman Brothers with Duane as well!
He sang to become a good husband and father, to love your mother, not to take drugs, not to be racist, to miss home, to love your land and people, to think about doing right or wrong when leaving for success, to be free... Man, Ronnie was so great. Greetings from Spain
I read where Ronnie was sick with the flu here, well just his style, he sang his heart out, even sick, you can hear it in his voice. God Bless You Ronnie, RIP.
This brings me immense joy...goosebumps all the way through. Wish I had been around back then. Could watch Allen Collins all day. RIP legends. Long live Artimus and Gary and Ed ❤
this is how its done young guns-total greatness,no smoke bombs,no light show just raw talent standing there in their street clothes kickin'butt and taking names!!! so humble all of them totally focused on the song.
That's part of why we love Skynyrd so much in the south, they are relatable and so is their music. Just good ol boys and I can't forget the honkettes too. Awesome!
I’ve seen and heard all there Mothers Talk. Everyone of them had a good honest upbringing. Not hard to figure out Who and What this song is about and where it came from.
I luv how they feature each other...the spotlight is for everyone. They know how good they are individually & they wanna make sure YOU know, too. Ronnie PUSHES them to the front. Gotta respect that. They're about the music.
Dave Quigley I agree 100%. Better than Aerosmith, Metallica and the Eagles. Great Bands. The original band was all killer and no filler and very diverse. Billy Powel and the honkettes were thier secret weapons.
32:50 Allen stage directing while playing, haha. "Okay, everyone look at Billy now"......I mean Billy was incredible so 1 second in he'd have gotten the attention anyway, but the little hand gesture as if to say "okay you liked the song so far? watch this!" is a nice touch, respect.
I was lucky enough to be in the audience for this show with only 70-100 people watching. The tickets were free and we had no idea who we were going to see. What we got was one of the best Lynyrd Skynyrd performances, just amazing
that is so cool!

Ronnie was such a natural and fantastic band leader. He knew how to control the stage and steer the band. Notice how he grabs Gary and Allen by the backs of their shirts and walks them to the front of the stage for their solo jams. That's the sign of a great front man right there.
If you read about him, Ronnie was inspired by Paul Rogers's stage presence. He was like a way more badass Paul Rogers 😂

That is was and forever remains the definitive example of who truly ran THAT show! Both cracks you up and gives you pause. Brilliant. You can almost hear him thinking "Alright, boys, reign it in NOW!"
Yes sir.
Yes , and occasionally he beat them up nicely so the bandmates are controllable.
@@abcd-zi2ho Yes, people don't know about his rowdy style!
I dig Ronnies intro to Every Mothers Son. What song of theirs didn’t have a message. Representing in the UK .
Best Fuckin band ever,poppa...............
These boys were saying bigger than some magazine.
Historical.....
Skynyrd played every song night after night the same way note for note. That band was a steamroller. Tighter than a new facelift.
im a JJ Cale fan and skynyrd fan lovin it
Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band were the ones who put Southern rock music on the map - for all time!!
…and ZZ Top
The Marshall Tucker band of the mid 70s lineup with Brothers toy and Tommy Caldwell Manning the guitars also were fantastic and Southern down to their bones
Ronnie Van Zant : Vocals
Gary Rossington : Guitar, Slide Guitar
Billy Powell : Piano, Keyboard
Allen Collins : Guitar
Leon Wilkeson : Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals
Artimus Pyle : Drums
This recording kicks ass Alan could make a fire bird scream and a Stratocaster cry they were unbelievable I missed that band that was Lynyrd Skynyrd not today’s version
Allen Collins was totally underrated
responsible for a lot of LS's catchy riffs too... he co-wrote a lot of songs with RVZ.
Paul yeah old free bird never did get much credit. He's the classic guitar wingman.
The entire band is underrated!
Gary too. Gary and Allen are my favs on lead and rythem💕
I worship him.
Todays music can't even come close to comparing to these guys and many other 70s rock and roll bands!!! Skynyrd is legendary!!!! Rip Ronnie, u were the best!!!!❤🎸
**C_Capone85** - t Gary!.allen!.billy!.artimus!.leon!.you led the way!..they have to follow you!!.
@@Ridinfixinman Hear hear, I am 44 and I have seen some amazing bands over the years.
WHAT DO U MEAN WERE ??? HE STILL IS
Let me tell you my story of meeting the very might Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976.
For the next few days we told many people our story but we did not know the name of the band at that time
What a great surprise, It was one of the very best gigs I ever been to. We went to see they many times after this, never a bad gig from those boys, RIP to you boys, I bet you are still paying and kicking up some dust down in the Kingdom Hall
tck roofing that's too cool man. Ronnie and boys come in to some small joint and blow the roof off the place.
The equation is CCR=JOHN FOGERTY..nuff said!!
BWAAAAA HAAAAAA HAAAAAAA ' 76, Stones stones have opened for them !
@James I lived in the Florida panhandle from January of 1970 - June of 1974 ages 9-13 -and never heard Skynyrd on the radio. I can't figure out why. I remember all the popular songs of the day except theirs.
Wot a story
The terrible thing about Lynyrd Skynyrd most folks got lost on Free Bird( great song) this band right here is the tightest band playing the Greatest R&R any night every night
Skynyrd might be the best ever
Evidenced here
Thanks for sharing...
agreed!
yeh, but free bird is the greatest ever. i am a boring englishman but i would take this to my grave and twikle my toes
Billy Powell....need I say more?
Artimus Pyle was the perfect and only drummer for the group
Yeah I agree totally, feel bad for Bob having a nervous breakdown and having to quit
Youre right but the new one is pretty good too
Steve Gaines was amazing , but I really like the 2 guitar line up as well.
There will never be another rock band that will compare to the original skynyrd. They sound so tight and they wrote songs that I can relate to, unlike modern day bands. Sure would have liked to seen them live, but this video was the next best thing.
Ronnie wrote most of the lyrics and he never wrote anything down. He was a genius.
& that's a FACT !!!
@@bsneed58 Ronnie was the epitome of cool EXEMPLIFIED! 🎤🎶
Modern day bands write many songs you can relate to. You are just too narrow minded to go look for them. That’s fine, though. You stay stuck in the past and I’ll keep up with the times.
@@bsneed58yes he did. Not sure where you heard that, but it’s a lie.
Ronnie was such a badass frontman. And that hat really helped. May he RIP.
Flawless. What a tight performance.
Dont know how anyone could give this a thumbs down, liberal America!!!!
Wow, that's the biggest Big Rock Ending in the history of Big Rock Endings
Best band to ever come out of America!!!!🧡,who's really better!!!
Amazing how Every Mother’s Son just stands the test of time!
Gary just wow on the breeze. I had to rewind😜
T Ball , Billy Powell absolutely killed it asl well.
@@sammack1564 yes they all did
I was 14 years old when this album came out
man i love acdc but lynyrd skynyrd has my heart Ronny Vanzant will always be the true godfather of American rock
one of the most emotional versions I've heard from Ronnie

Sweet Home Alabama was a bit Lacklustre without Ed King but Freebird🇺🇸was Phenomenal🎸🎸🍺🍺🍕🍕
Excellent, I was just wondering....who in their right mind would watch a great show like this and give it a thumbs down? Don't like our era of music, just move on and find what you like. Again...EXCELLENT SHOW.
Hey there Seachelle! I bet you're something and if love Lynyrd Skynyrd as much as I do....Well God bless ya!!!
Wow, Don, I AM impressed with your insight! Rock On, Bro'.
Good performance by Jesus on drums. No seriously, this is beyond epic.
Sexy Artimus❤
Artimus Pyle . He is actually still playing around Florida with The Artimus Pyle Band 🙏🙏
@@craigjackson5903 Sad he and Gary aren't jamming together still, hate to think some Trumptard dumbshit got between them because the two of them were brothers even though they were opposites.

I agree Brother !!! Artimus can PLAY the Drums !!! He was always in his own little world , even in the Bands heyday . After surviving the crash , he really went off the deep end for a while !! I remember Dan Rather tracking him down in Florida , and he came to the interview on a bicycle !! I think he may have been homeless at the time !!! I completely agree with your sentiment that they are
" Brothers " , and I do agree that brothers should always FIND A WAY to Love each other !! God Bless Man , awesome comment 🙏🙏😎😎
@@craigjackson5903 He was/is a vegetarian pilot, no way he gets along with a beer slugging dove hunter. That's why Skynyrd rules, the underling bond despite differences.
Every Mother's Son....one Helluva Song right there Boys !
Not sure how many times Collins smoked that firebird but it was legendary.
Never be another Lynyrd Skynyrd never be another Ronnie Van Zant this is the band that's all others try to stand behind from the south I love them and the younger generation has no f****** idea we brought this to them what did they do with it make a rap song yeah they're really crushing it LOL love this
Cheryl Mcmurray who knew the way music would fall apart the way it did!
I love seeing kids these days hear Lynyrd Skynyrd for the first time. You can see the fire in their eyes.
Kings of leon are a very good modern southern band...
He sang to become a good husband and father, to love your mother, not to take drugs, not to be racist, to miss home, to love your land and people, to think about doing right or wrong when leaving for success, to be free... Man, Ronnie was so great. Greetings from Spain
I appreciate Lynyrd Skynyrd, but Ronnie Van Zandt is extremely high in this video.

One of THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME rock anthems
this is how its done young guns-total greatness,no smoke bombs,no light show just raw talent standing there in their street clothes kickin'butt and taking names!!! so humble all of them totally focused on the song.
That's part of why we love Skynyrd so much in the south, they are relatable and so is their music. Just good ol boys and I can't forget the honkettes too. Awesome!
Bad Ass Band right there!!!
Great Video! Great Band! Allen Collins moved around so much when he played. So sad to see him in the wheelchair later on...
I love "Everything Mother's Son" too...great tune...
Yes! The guitar solo at the very end gives me goosebumps. So heartfelt.
It's called every mother's son
I’ve seen and heard all there Mothers Talk. Everyone of them had a good honest upbringing. Not hard to figure out Who and What this song is about and where it came from.
I luv how they feature each other...the spotlight is for everyone. They know how good they are individually & they wanna make sure YOU know, too. Ronnie PUSHES them to the front. Gotta respect that. They're about the music.
Wow, I'm 59, never seen this one, Think I got a half Woody watching it. A rock and roll Woody! YEA!! Ohh, its gone now, but awesome vid!!
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best American Rock band of all time
Dave Quigley Yesss they were. .....
Dave Quigley I agree 100%. Better than Aerosmith, Metallica and the Eagles. Great Bands. The original band was all killer and no filler and very diverse. Billy Powel and the honkettes were thier secret weapons.
Skynyrd is the best!!! No other band makes me feel this good!! RIP, to all who left all too soon!!!

Well.....yeah, but
Rock n roll. This world is lacking in that.
I've watched almost all the videos here on RUclips, and for me Ronnie in this show is beautiful, that hat, the jacket, the hair...
