I never understood why a lot of things have the exhaust pipes in WH40k, a lot of them run on micro-fusion drives don't they? Space Marines do anyway lol, maybe they have bad farts that need exhausting
magicalpencil the way I understood it is that it's standard stc design, yet when more advanced drives and methods of propulsion were used instead of being exhausts for gasses that are the byproduct of combustion, they are also heat exhausts or even steam vents. Also Rhinos for example are supposed to be able to run on literally any fuel you can get your mitts on, so their exhausts are probably multi purpose by design.
Perhaps its more like a heat exchanger. Even nuclear power generates loads of thermal heat and to keep them from literally melting down they need to radiate that heat in some fashion. There are many types of heat exchangers made in our reality for various applications so maybe the one in W40k uses some type of material that can effectively transfer heat but releases a by-product of something akin to 'smog' or another substance. Then again, rule of cool and style.

Well, Imperium uses Plasma Reactors, which is an advanced type of Fusion, so no nuclear waste there. Space marine vehicles also use electricity and promethium both. So that if the engines of the Rhino, all four, get shot, it can still get the marines somewhere safe. Space marine armour also has solar absorption on the backpack. In case the backup batteries fail after the reactor in the backpack fail. Wild herds of demon princes. Hah.
