  • In the lead up to Warhammer Skulls, we've enlisted our resident 40k nerd Dave Jewitt to rank his most loved and most loathed Warhammer 40,000 video games.
Do you agree with his placement of games like Space Marine, Mechanicus, Dawn of War, Fire Warrior and beyond? And where do you think Space Marine 2 will end up once it releases later this year?
If you want to see a ranking of the Warhammer Fantasy games like Vermintide 2 and Total War: Warhammer 3, be sure to let us know in the comments section below.

Dawn of War 2 is best Dawn of War and the Dark Angels deserve another chance at being a video game protagonist chapter.
Also Isador Akios is a Poindexter.
Also also the graphic for Underhive Wars is bugged and incorrect. The person responsible has been handed in to the regimental commissar.

I was a tester on Space Marine and can confirm that the devs loved the game! They unfortunately knew their studio was doomed before it was released (thanks to the old THQ publisher thinking it was going to fail when released around the same time as Gear of War and sinking too much of their funds into that dumb draw tablet) but at least they were able to add as much content as possible. The horde mode was especially fun to work on since it was the last thing that was implemented. They wanted it to have legs and be actually hard so they would send us a build a daily with tweaks. They asked for a lot of feedback and wanted it to take our best testers all day to beat it a single time. I am happy to say that I was on that team that beat the final wave, equipped as always with my trusty Plasma Cannon. For the Emperor!

Exterminatus mode is so so much fun to play on and it was really hard to clear all stages, but I did it in the end. Thanks for your great work! And even the Dreadnought dlc is amazing in the PvP mode!
Another little side story was I remember Space Marine wasnt intialally support Pentium D CPUs at launch but I wanted to play the game so much and contacted the support for it, and after they released an update so players with older spec can play! I still remember the care the devs had the joy they brought me till this day.

Rock solid list, wonderful vid. I only dissent on 2 points: Darktide's OST is something that should be experienced in game and pushes it up to an S tier game for me. And Rogue Trader's devs tinker on their games for years after their release. The critiscism about the skill tree is 100% legit, it's definitely something they can improve, and they probably will.

I have my own issues with the game that mean I can't in good conscious push it to S tier (not quite yet anyways), but man, when you're in game and Immortal Imperium or Imperial Advance starts playing, phew, that really gets the blood pumping alright!

    • @MrFiremagnet
      @MrFiremagnet Месяц назад

DoW2 actually felt A LOT like they balanced it with 5th edition tabletop feel in mind, but with adding some CoH mechanics (like firing arches for heavy weapons). Flamers in the tabletop ignored cover - in DoW2 they dealt additional damage against targets in cover. Tanks had different sides to them and and it mattered towards the damage calculation. It's also wasn't possible to wreck tanks without the anti-tank weapon just like in the current tabletop.
Some of the things that first appeared in DoW2 migrated to the tabletop (that's my theory, could be s coincidence). For example, assault marines could deal damage with their jumps in the video game - and in the tabletop, hammer of wrath rule appeared. And currently almost every unit has some sort of the active ability, pretty much like on DoW1/2.
So I personally liked DoW2 much more because at the very same time I first started playing the 5th edition 40k, and the general feelings of the tabletop was there. Also it felt a lot more visceral, as the pace was much faster, and you had to be more precise with our actions.
DoW1 and DLCs are awesome, but it would be safe to say that they prioritized in-game balance over the codex authenticity - tactical marines being basically tactical and devastator units, tau crisis being almost like a walker type unit instead of mobile suit squad, the list goes on.
To me, the only bad thing about the DoW2 was the fact that it was almost like a reimaining for the mostly players, who couldn't follow the evolution of Relic design philosophy by playing both DoW and CoH. They should have make DoW2 a little closer to the CoH (it has many DoW2 mechanics AND the base building/building capturing).

Well, my ranking for the original Dawn of War I and II as well as their add-ons is a bit different:
S-tier Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, Chaos Rising and Retribution,
A-tier for Dawn of War, Soulstorm and Dawn of War 2
A tier for Dawn of War the Campaign is S tier, but the factions in skirmish are meh. I only enjoy two of the four, Space Marines and Eldar. Chaos and Orcs are my least favourite factions in DoW I and its add-ons, probably because I was never good at playing them.
S-tier for Winter Assault because it introduced the Imperial Guard, my favourite faction in DoW and Warhammer 40k in general. Also, the campaigns were almost on the level of DoW and you could play as 4 factions instead of one. Furthermore, the Winter Assault campaign was the time when I enjoyed playing Orcs and Chaos the most.
S-tier for Dark Crusade for the introduction of the Necrons and the Tau, both factions I enjoyed playing as, though I never got good with the Necrons either. And while most of the campaign battles were glorified skirmishes, the Stronghold battles and the battles for specific campaign boons were better than most missions in the DoW and Winter Assault campaigns.
A-tier for Soulstorm. The campaigns were worse than Dark Crusade's, but it introduced my 2nd favourite faction in DoW I the Sisters of Battle and the Dark Eldar which I also enjoyed playing quite a bit.
A-tier for Dawn of War II because to me the Tyranids are the least interesting of any Warhammer 40k faction, now if we were talking Gene Stealer cults ..., alas not much of a factor in this campaign, what a missed opportunity.
S-tier for the DoW II add-ons, two of my favourite Warhammer games ever. The Space Marines felt more lore accurate in DoW II than in DoW I gameplay-wise.
So my personal ranking of DoW I and II and their add-ons:
    1 Winter Assault
2 Dark Crusade (though I played it far more than WA, especially with my friends)
    3 Chaos Rising
    4 Retribution
    5 DoW I
    6 DoW II
    7 Soulstorm

I'm a little disappointed the handhelds weren't mentioned. Squad Command is a good mention because it's around the era that WH40K was just going nuts with the property and putting it on every available gaming platform possible. Like yay Ngage - but let's talk about PSP and DS tie ins.

There's actually a Steam Sale at the moment on a lot of 40k games, picked up Dawn of war 2 and all the DLC very cheaply, also got Chaos gate 2. Mark Strong would be good in the 40k series if he's cast.

The Dawn of War series (save for the abysmal 3rd) were some of the greatest strategic / tactical games that I ever played. Dawn of War 2 was my favorite.
I also like seeing you give Gladius the recognition it deserves.
Your list is well done. Out of the ones that I've played, I pretty much agree with you on all of them!

Shootas, Blood & Teef was an absolute blast for me and i personally would put it somewhere between A and B Tier. Probably A, because i am a huge Fan of the Greenskins in Warhammer Fantasy and 40k.
And whereas i went absolutely ham on Darktide before and on Release (Got my ogryn to level 30 during preoder beta, before crafting materials were even a thing), the rose tinted glasses came off rather hard for me personally. The mentioned lack of any meaningful story and more importantly, my absolute displeasure with the gacha crafting system, that still hasn't been properly adressed (at least for me), were two of the main factors that made me put the game on ice. Haven't played since March 22, 2023...personally i would put the game between B and C Tier in it's current state. There have been a lot of improvements to the game, but the one big issue i have with it (crafting) sadly remains untouched. They said they would further adress crafting going forward, so Fingers crossed it gets me back to playing.
Apart from that, decent Tierlist i pretty much agree with. I would probably have put Spacehulk Deathwing one Tier lower, that stinker of a game was the very first of only to games total i ever refunded on Steam, but that's about it.

Best for me is Templar Battleforce, not official but is pretty amazing. Warhammer really should have hired that studio to make an official 40k game. They nail the whole esthetic, story and gameplay. I play through it once a year. My favorite turnbased skirmish game. 2nd favorite has to be Space Marine.

I was a huge fan of dawn of war, some months ago I found this game was still alive with some incredible mods, I recommend the last version of unification mod 7.1, there are plenty of new balanced factions (36 in total) and it's still very fun in 2024.

    • @deckardus-te2oo
      @deckardus-te2oo Месяц назад

I agree. Unification is an amazing mod where almost all factions from Warhammer 40k are playable. It's just a pity that this game has some technical issues, like occasional crashes. It's a shame that Dawn of War 1 still hasn't received a remastered version.

i would personally say that Darktide and Rogue Trader should be in the S tier. i mean, Jasper Kyd's soundtrack for Darktide was insanely good ( and yeah, bolters and plasmas sound soooo satisfying to shoot ), and both Darktide and RT completely catch up with the neo gothic style of the settings. and Darktide's set up, for you char, it means a lot more into lore. you're disposable. you're no hero. if you die, so be it

Dawn of War: Soulstorm with the Unification mod is my favorite Warhammer 40k game. It's astonishing that we still don't have a proper RTS successor to this game in 2024 where it would be possible to play almost all factions from Warhammer 40k.
Gladius is my second favorite Warhammer 40k game. I like this Civilization-style game with a focus on combat.
