@@Donnerbalken28 Ork campaign is utterly hilarious. You can do all sorts of wacky things, like make Spookums blow himself up and fly away. I remember that it was somehow pretty hard in the beginning compared to some other factions, but it cought up later. I also loved IG campaign. Lord Commissar Bern is amazing, he can beat the shit out of wraith lords with a power fist while protected by a shield and tanking all the shots.
An interesting thing that was said during one of the early/pre-release pieces of the game was that Relic found that a lot of people who favored single player content either never or extremely rarely played the multiplayer content and vice versa which was a factor in why they made the campaign the strategy RPG hybrid it has going on instead of a more traditional RTS style campaign, which for a number of games, tended to play more like glorified tutorials. It's an experiment and certainly a very interesting one that ultimately worked out. Experimenting and trying new things is just kinda relic's thing and you can see it across their library. They experiment within a specific game's confines via expansions and then when they make the next game it seems like they just go in a different direction. We didn't really get a straight forward sequel from Relic until Company of Heroes 2. Speaking of Company of heroes, it's a little disappointing you didn't go into CoH's thing as it relates to DoW2 at all as it's the game that introduced a lot of mechanics that made it into Dawn of War 2, that aren't the campaign specific stuff. Going from DoW1 to 2 it's a lot of "Where the fuck did this come from?" But factoring in CoH as in between these two, the evolution seems a lot less out of left field.
Good god I've love a good retrospective series on company of heroes, I'm a massive DoW fan but company of heroes is my favorite RTS of all time, holds up phenomenally for something that came out in 2006
@@fish7598 CoH2 even has a active, if very small e-sport community. And that is remarkable for a game that came out in 2013 and its publisher going under in the meantime.
I'm going to raise my hand as one of those people who prefers single player strategy games and generally never touches the multiplayer. DOW2 and all of its expansions were AWESOME to me for this very reason. I got some cool tactical strategy games with light RPG elements in one of my favorite settings. What more could I ask for?
@@williamaitken7533 Honestly relics RTS games have a strong history of being remarkably strong single player experiences. Homeworld had a fantastic campaign, as did dawn of war 1 & 2, and the variety of play styles offered by the different companies in CoH made skirmish matches highly re-playable even against AI due how different each one could feel.
I loved how tactical this game was, it's more like chess - completely losing a squad is a significant setback and forces you to think more about how you position them and what engagements you try to fight.
@@yakamao91 its not as uncommon as you think. In the taros campaign a company of marines got surprised by the Tau and lost like half their men in a couple days before they eventually pulled out under cover of darkness. It was something like 120 marines in 3 days.

I cannot lie that when I randomly saw this recommended to me when I used to remember watching your previous review DoW review videos. I had a bit of a fangirl scream.
I can see why it took so long to get this out to us. You had to go all the way to Mars to find a cogitator capable of possessing this piece of archeotech.
Coming back after re-watching it I'm going to give my take on Dawn of War 1, expansions and DoW2 with expansions. I love both games for being exactly that. Different. If I want to have big battles with armies clashing, bodies in hundreds, conquests - first game is the way to go. Dawn of War 1 was my introduction to 40k and I still love it (I swear to gods, I will have my tabletop armies in the future, in Poland they're expensive af considering the money people make). I fell in love with the lore, different factions, tactics, units - there's so much content to sink into. Dawn of War 2 is something completely different. You have a much more fleshed out plot of the game, characters have much deeper backstories, it is 40k seen through the eyes of your not-so-regular Space Marines. I love the tacticality (or cheese) of the combat here, ways you can tackle an objective every single time, different squads and loadouts that you can fit into your playstyle. Now for the similarities - both games had their last expansion being kind of a fuckup. Soulstorm was a buggy, mangled mess of a game, with campaign being really boring aside from a couple strongholds. Retribution was just one campaign played almost exactly the same by all of the factions in the game, which made finishing it once with one faction - you know what you get with others, really. But Soulstorm gave us the platform for many tasty mods like Ultimate Apocalypse, while Retribution's The Last Stand is the most refined experience with very different characters and playstyles. DoW1 and 2 are similar to each other, just not in a way people expect.
11:50 I have a running theory that the skirmish AI of Dow2 have two parameters. First. It can read where you click your mouse in the map, allowing the AI to know where you are going, what unit you're sending in that area and how strong those units are. This allows the AI to automatically know if they shall send some of their units to face your unit or not. Second. The AI will almost always ascertain and prioritize areas of the map where there is fog of war and where your screen is not focused on. Meaning that resources that are not obscured by FOW and you can see on your screen is almost always a 'no go', while resources, specially Victory points, that are not on your screen are their go to spot. This is where your clicking on FOW in order to defend spots allows the AI to see if they shall respond to your incoming units or not - like sending gaunts and warriors on tacs and scouts, or sending Venom + range Carni if you send tanks or Terms. So yeah, all in all. The AI is kind of a prophet and a cheater, specially on Expert difficulty - which is what also makes them weak since the problem of the AI in DoW2 is that they cannot predict what abilities you have or can use against them. This means you click your Tics and CSM on a spot to capture stuff while leaving your Sorcerer on the other side of the map. The AI will read that as you, leaving your hero alone, thus sending some Genestealer to fuck up your Sorc. Once the genestealers + Warriors are to jump your sorc, I just TP my Sorc before Mass TP my army to jump on them and defend my spots before redoing it again. SO yeah. I know DoW2 is an old game but its fun to talk about the behavior of the cheating AI.
Dawn of War 2 is a RTT. I remember seeing the cover of Dawn of War 2 when I was still in school on a PC magazine. I got it instantly and instantly loved the Tyranids. Those reptilian monstrosities are awesome.
Thunder, I will admit, I love how you nailed what works about the RPG system. Personally from my view, the greatest extent of it is in Chaos Rising because of the system it adds. To me it's the greatest form of morality in a game series. Also if you have GOTY edition or play DOW2 through Chaos Rising, you get some Chaos Rising equipment.
Best Dawn of War characters in no particular order. Gabriel Angelos. A war weary but indomitable commander. General Sturnn. A man you would be glad to die standing beside. Gorgutz. As tuff 'n cunnin' as Gork 'n Mork. Eliphas (Dark Crusade). A calm and witty Dark Apostle. Avitus. He realized the terrible truth, that it is the 41st Millennium, and there is only war. Shas 'O Kais. One of the few sensible commanders, and likely the Tau's equivalent of Doomguy. Thomas Macabee: The reason Periah's should come back, with his chilling response's to the living. Ronahn: One of the few Eldar whose ballsy enough to namedrop Slaanesh without reprisals.
God I remember when you spoke to me about doing this series. Absolutely brilliant work as always, you managed to present the exact same thoughts I had about the game, while keeping it entertaining and informative. Great work dude
I always found the intro a bit unintentionally hilarious, with the random slow motion banshees and both sides seemingly taking turns when it comes to killing each other.
Quick thing about the morale thing, explained at 4:30 They didn't really got rid of it, it works differently now. Before, if a squad would break, it would take significantly more damage and be less effective in combat. The "New" system was called "Courage" and it's an hidden stats that determines how much time it takes for a specific squad to get suppressed, when this happens, the squad has a longer cooldown on their shots and take significantly more damage, the more they're close to the suppression team. The retreat option, in fact, was worked around this mechanic, as when retreating the unit becomes resistant to all types of damage except: Melee(any infantry/commander with no upgrades) Power Melee(Power swords/catachan fighters for the IG) and Inferno damage (CSM'S Mark of tzeench) Anyway great video, I watched all of em before this one, like this is some kind of dessert, I've waited so long and i've been so satisfied. Keep up the good work
Three words you used in this video, I feel, perfectly encapsulate why warhammer is so compelling. "Defiance of terror". The concept that mankind as a whole, though not individually for obvious reasons, will face every horror both material and not and rather than panic, perish and scatter... we resist. Roaring in defiance that every last second of consciousness would be spent fighting back, no matter what.
Well now I want to see the next one. because these reviews are uniformly excellent: your a very entertaining and enthusiastic presenter, the editing is great and funny, and you are thoughtful about evaluating design elements and mechanics. Plus these are like the perfect length that lets you get a solid overview+review out, and not be too brief nor overly padded.
It's alive. Also, the steam version was weird for me too. The map screens and little intro animations are just black like the movie files didn't download properly. Reinstalling didn't help, and appartenly no one else had the same problem. -shrug-
Praise the Emperor I can see the stats again. Receiving distress beacons, the sector is alight with them. Lord Admiral, according to these timestamps the year is 020M2, we have been lost in the Warp for 4 years.

Finally ending it off with a Space Marine 2 review in 2044 broadcast over a ham radio into the post apocalyptic desert wasteland for his surviving 11 & 1/3rd fans.
Well on point review, ThunderPsyker. I'll add some criticisms to the game and its expansions though: - In basic gameplay, the automatic cover system of your squads when under fire is problematic when they suddenly get close to melee units, if not really heavy enemy fire; it also feels like a downgrade from Company of Heroes' own cover systems. - The retreat mechanic increasing the damage risk for units might make it a bit wasteful. - Being unable to save during campaign missions turns hard slogs into way longer repeating nightmare slogs. - The Chaos Rising "corrupted ally" parts not being transferred to Retribution a la the Old Save Bonus system is a big mistake. Come on, the Mass Effect games were hot at the time, why didn't they take inspiration from them, their Baldur's Gate predecessors, and other RPGs like the Neverwinter Nights series? - Retribution's faction-specific campaigns being a bit too similar, even compared to Winter Assault's and Dark Crusade's. Oh, and even if "Schedule Slip" has marred the reviews for DoW II: Chaos Rising+Retribution, Space Marine, the DoW: Soulstorm mods, and maybe even DoW III, don't rush and don't ever fret all too badly, sir. You still got all the time and health that you need.

3 years in the making, finally, in the hardest of times, THE NEW VIDEO HAVE ARRIVED!
Yeah. CoH introduced a lot of mechanics that were carried over to DOW2, whilst being of a scale closer to DOW
Excellent video, mate. Glad to have you back.
I loved how tactical this game was, it's more like chess - completely losing a squad is a significant setback and forces you to think more about how you position them and what engagements you try to fight.
I thought that was kinda weird since you would expect losing entire squads to be a common occurrence in 40k
@@sturm9087 Not that much when it comes to space marines
@@yakamao91 its not as uncommon as you think. In the taros campaign a company of marines got surprised by the Tau and lost like half their men in a couple days before they eventually pulled out under cover of darkness. It was something like 120 marines in 3 days.

Well welcome to new 40k lore and now they get along just fine, also the Tau joined the alliance.
@@Marinealver Define "get along fine". The alliance between the Ynnari and Guilliman was one of convinience and there are still lots of factions on both sides that didn't agree with it.
Doesn't help that both sides are super racist.
@@Donnerbalken28 They aren't really racist, they are xenophobic if you really want to use the right term you dirty pleb, its just that any contact they had between themselves went badly over and over again so its understandable why they dont get along.
Also its the eldar's fault that they dont get along and also that they are dying.

Eldar believe in their superiority over the other factions of the settings and also amongst themselves.
Because even Eldar need to be flexed on by other Eldars about how inferior they are.

I have a running theory that the skirmish AI of Dow2 have two parameters.
I sort of wish they put in all the MP heroes in the Last Stand and include all the wargear.
"Once I cover Chaos Rising..."
Famous last words.
Hope this guy comes back. His content was sick af. Genuinely entertaining creator.

Four more years lads!
I always found the intro a bit unintentionally hilarious, with the random slow motion banshees and both sides seemingly taking turns when it comes to killing each other.
Funny enough, someone said the same thing about the first game when looking at the orks.
So great to have you back, Thunder! These videos are amazing, and I can't wait for the next one!
Quick thing about the morale thing, explained at 4:30
They didn't really got rid of it, it works differently now.
The retreat option, in fact, was worked around this mechanic, as when retreating the unit becomes resistant to all types of damage except: Melee(any infantry/commander with no upgrades) Power Melee(Power swords/catachan fighters for the IG) and Inferno damage (CSM'S Mark of tzeench)
Anyway great video, I watched all of em before this one, like this is some kind of dessert, I've waited so long and i've been so satisfied. Keep up the good work
Morale break, at least in DC/SS, only drastically reduced unit's accuracy, except Horrors who'd not get accuracy penalty but would take more damage
Dear Emperor, he lives. This must be the doing of that thrice damned Tech-Priest Mandalore.
-shrug-
Do my eyes deceive me? What time line are we in? I almost didnt click on the video until I saw the channel name.
Praise the Emperor I can see the stats again. Receiving distress beacons, the sector is alight with them. Lord Admiral, according to these timestamps the year is 020M2, we have been lost in the Warp for 4 years.
How can a man get to a 46k subs, drop this banger of a review, get 400k views on it, even get a comment from Mandalore, and then just disappear. I swear, if he had continued with his reviews with regular uploads, he would be a rich and famous youtuber by now. Oh well.

How many years for the Chaos Rising review I wonder? 🧐
Had a good laugh while watching this video. Why did you stop making them? They're so much fun. Instant Sub.
Well on point review, ThunderPsyker.
I'll add some criticisms to the game and its expansions though:
- In basic gameplay, the automatic cover system of your squads when under fire is problematic when they suddenly get close to melee units, if not really heavy enemy fire; it also feels like a downgrade from Company of Heroes' own cover systems.
