I used to teach high school. I saw a drawing someone made of a female figure with wings. Gothic. Arms at sides, hands open. Either wings or a wedding dress, I can’t remember. Next to the image were the lyrics to this song. The song made someone dream. The song made someone create that image. It was through this song that art was made about the hope the make more art. Go get ‘em, kid, whoever you are. Or I hope you did. And take that bow, Decembrists.
As close to perfection as one can get
I love that there's absolutely nothing dark about the lyrics, but all the comments are suggesting a dark underbelly to the song. The simple melody is so powerful, Colin's vocals so bizarre, and the final crescendo so insane, that you can't help but wonder what the song is REALLY about.
It's about the suicide of the singer, a failed actor. "From the floorboard to the fly" refers to the area of the stage, the foorboards of the stage to the rafters where the ropes and rigging are. He is hanging between them. He believes he was meant for the stage and stardom but he just hasn't been able to make it there. Irony is created from the contrast between the epic description of his performances and the plodding rythm and mellow tone of his actual voice. He wants his mother to still be proud of him, and his father to know he forgives him for telling him his acting career will never pan out (possibly because the singer thinks was right in the end). He thinks he doesn't matter because after the audience leaves the theater, they resume going about their daily lives, seemingly untouched by his work. He thinks it might even be that way for the "audience" off his death. It is his final bow, the stardom he couldn't achieve in life. It is his last attempt to leave an impression on people. The wailing and the cacophony at the end are because the singer's point of view is collapsing as he dies from lack of oxygen in his brain. You hear the muffled shocked cries of the people (maybe his mother?) who come into the room to discover his body, and the instruments fizzle out until they suddenly cease. so yeah I'd say its pretty dark.
@@calamityjoan5187 All due respect, wtf are you talking about?
@@greeniegathering3297 Na I kind of get it
"I Was Meant For The Stage"
I was meant for the stage,
I was meant for the curtain.
I was meant to tread these boards,
Of this much i am certain.
I was meant for the crowd,
I was meant for the shouting.
I was meant to raise these hands
With quiet all about me. oh, oh.
Mother, please, be proud.
Father, be forgiven.
Even though you told me
'Son, you'll never make a living.' oh, oh.
From the floorboards to the fly,
Here I was fated to reside.
And as I take my final bow,
Was there ever any doubt?
And as the spotlights fade away,
And you're escorted through the foyer,
You will resume your callow ways,
But I was meant for the stage.
The heavens at my birth
Intended me for stardom,
Rays of light shone down on me
And all my sins were pardoned.
I was meant for applause.
I was meant for derision.
Nothing short of fate itself
Has affected my decision. oh, oh.
From the floorboards to the fly,
here i was fated to reside.
And as I take my final bow,
Was there ever any doubt?
And as the spotlights fade away,
And you're escorted through the foyer,
You will resume your callow ways,
But I was meant for the stage.
Forgiving 😁
Whenever I sing this song I feel like Frankenfurter at the end of Rocky Horror Picture Show crying to an audience that... doesn't... uhh… exist
This song is amazing
I was meant to listen to The Decemberists!
Thank you Taliesin.
Magnificent xx

Is it just me, or does this song conjure up images of Collin on an empty stage singing to a horrified audience that just discovered the doors are locked as the theater burns to the ground.
I can tell you just finished inglorious bastards.
Actually yes that sounds like a great idea!
Well, it does now.
I was meant for the stage too.
Try as you might...this dude meant and wrote this song...and here we are listening to it.
Trump's theme song (and no I dont mean this is a good way)
