It’s a song about about obsession. The meditative texture, the long build up, the bassline repeating ominously, over and over and over without relief, is the point.
@@heroesofhogan233 "The song is basically about a stalker. It’s about this nice guy who wants this girl he can’t have, and he believes they’ll be together once she realizes how great he is-he just has to wait it out. That’s the part that makes the song really creepy, the delusion of thinking that they were meant to be together. It’s a really dark song. A lot of the material is about the inevitable disappointment people feel as they move through life, and things don’t feel the way they expect. True story. Years ago I had smoked a hitter and hopped in my buddies truck (he was 100% sober). I had heard of Death Cab for Cutie but had never listened to them. He had his radio tuned to some station I apparently never listened to. We happened to catch the song at the start and I was instantly captivated. I made him drive around until the song was over. My mother passed away yesterday. It’s just me and my dad now. There is an empty hole in us now but today I played this song with my dad. All three of had listened to it just a few days ago. I love this song, that intro is just musical edging and it took me forever to know when the vocals were going to come in. I’d take in a breath and come in anywhere between a full minute and a few seconds too early
I would always start my road trips as a truck driver with this song. I'd do my pre-trip inspection, then half an hour later, climb into my Freightliner and plug this song in. Usually by the time I was about 4 minutes into the song, I was shifting gears - heading north on I-65. Hitting 13th gear was smooth, and time to restart this song. Music to drive by. Love it.
Alright, so I admit I'm not so young, cool and as hip as I used to be... first time I heard this song, i fell in love with it; I asked my son to look it up for me, because I had no idea who this group was... this "Dead Cat for Judy"... he laughed so hard i thot he was gonna wet his pants. After some days of discussion with his friends, he came back to tell me that was actually a pretty good name for a tribute band. I've rarely felt so proud, lol
and I guess I take a different view than most posters I've read... yeah, I can see the creepy stalker thing on the surface, but I also see the dedication it takes to convince someone you're worthwhile, if they'd just give you a fair chance. I've been married over 30 years now, and my wife would be the first to admit that without my perseverance we'd have been divorced early on... "Gotta spend some time, love, gotta spend some time with me!"
could be, i suppose... i just can't help but see it as being not willing to be swept aside without at least trying your best to make your case for love.
Miss you guys so much… can’t wait to stare out window looking at whole new world… cause this is meaningless… my life is meaningless… I want to start a whole new life… and remember you in the back of my head
I've loved them for the past 14 years and tbh when I saw them live it was so disappointing...didn't lose any love for them but I'll stick to listening at home and setting up my vibe with them in the background..maybe I need to give their live show another try one day
I love this song so much , the intro is so awesome . I've watched this a pile of times trying to figure out all the country's and city's that she is in , I love it. I'm not worldly by no means , I'm just a dirt farmer with head phones in the tractor listening to Great Tunes !!!
sometimes a song defies its write time - by being a perfectly crafted piece of gold, that needs to be loved and possesed by people who posess the heart to understand a FKN good song
After over 10 years of listening to this song, this has become my traditional first song played at the beginning of the New Year. When I was younger I used to think it was always about being in a relationship, or being with someone. As I have gotten older it has begun to give me the space to see my pair as the goals I set for the year. You would think being a Death Cab fan I would listen to New Year, but this is the one that always starts my year, and I do genuinely feel that I am the better for it.
I feel Death Cab and the Postal Service are both extremely underrated bands. Ben's voice is incredible both live and on his albums and his style has changed so many times it's really impressive. Saw them live for the first time a few years ago and I was truly impressed.
Never heard any other of their songs, but this one pops up in my mind from time to time. Theres something mythical about it, takes me to strange places, memories from the past. Not necessarily good places, but somehow hopeful idk haha. Cool piece
There is a measure i experience at live shows...it is a harmony in which a note of silence occurz. A resonence of cancel. Idk if it is planned...but i do know...there is harmony that well tuned
Here is where every instrument starts in the intro: buzzing: 0:10 Piano: 0:16 Bass: 0:21 Rhythm Guitar: 0:36 Drums: 1:05 Lead Guitar: 3:18 Marimba: 3:27 Backing vocals: 3:46 Lead vocals: 4:41
I absolutely adore reading international comments. It makes me feel connected to humanity, which of course, is bigger than my patriotism. It’s completely impractical, but I feel like we could be friends just because of this song. Cincinnati.
I heard this song in 2010 and thought of it like it was all the things I wish I could express to a woman I thought I was in love with. This used to be my love song. I hear this song in 2020 and I'm glad I had time to think about my shit, and find a different woman who has taught me the meaning of empathy. I still love all the instrumental parts of this song, but I take the words as from a time where all I wanted was love that served myself when I was possessive. It's crazy what a decade and a wonderful person can do to expand your view.
I feel a need to comment on the music video itself. I remember when I first watched it when it just came out, being hypnotized watching the woman traveling all over the world, but in such an understated manner. That image of her has always stuck with me, especially since I've always wanted to travel on my own. Now, over a decade later this video has even more of an impact on me, I was able to accomplish my goal of traveling on my own and this video encapsulates the feeling of doing that better than any other type of media I've seen. It's a feeling of peacefulness, joy, wonder, melancholy and loneliness all combined into something beautiful. Which is exactly what the video shows, so thank you.
Betsy McCabe I agree with this on so many levels I also remember watching the video when it came out and I was still in high school dreaming of seeing the world and yeah I love how understated this video and the woman are it’s something that brings me back to this song over and over throughout the years
but Betsy, i must ask you...did you play this song while actually traveling? like on a walkman... while on a boat..or a bus or something, im jealous..i think i could do that forever
this Intro is longer than most generic pop songs, and there's two good reasons for that in my eyes.1) it's insanely catchy and hypnotic, 2) people actually want to hear it
It was confirmed that the excessively long bass intro is supposed to emulate the obsession/ stalker vibe, which is what this song is about after all. Lol
The first 4-1/2 minutes....just musical genius... holy shit. Or, “hey, I have this epic Bass line, let’s just jamb and see what kind of awesomeness we can make with it....ready? Go!”
I like playing along on bass and seeing what I can add to it. As simple as the rhythm is it's surprisingly easy to get off track if you're not paying attention
Saw them at Riot Fest in 2016 - and many times after. The mesmerizing lead guitar. The driving bass The haunting opening call-backs. The crescendo building to the opening lyrics that stand as one of the great musical lines for the ages. Absolute layered genius - as far as I'm concerned, their opus for the 21st century. Brilliant!
It has always blown me away.....It's like they build a perfect vessel to deliver a message......and the message is Fantastic...the build up is INTENSE!
Me, too. This video has been in my favorites for over a decade. I still watch it once in a while. The woman in this is so beautiful. Great song. The band scenes make ya feel cold lol.
Indeed. The bass line slow-build start, those men in cold storage for the shoot, the images of travel by an explorer. The whole of it. I think this will be around a long time.
This song ages like good wine and a well worn warm sweater and gives you comfort through out the years and reminds you of a day, a week, a month, a summer and a year that can never be recaptured but only experienced with this song playing as you jog through the memories, the love, the pain the loss, the want .................Damn this song.
I remember seeing this video for the first time when it came out. I was 18 and I was immediately obsessed with being this girl, just one day getting on a plane and traveling the world with only what I had with me.
Legend has it he is still playing that bassline to this day
That made me laugh so hard!
Given it's still playing in my mind for the last 14 years... Yes. Yes, he does.

How I wish you could see the potential
The potential of you and me

And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart

You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
There are days when outside your window
I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective
When we'll be lovers, lovers at last
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won't let you let me down so easily
So easily
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me

and I guess I take a different view than most posters I've read... yeah, I can see the creepy stalker thing on the surface, but I also see the dedication it takes to convince someone you're worthwhile, if they'd just give you a fair chance. I've been married over 30 years now, and my wife would be the first to admit that without my perseverance we'd have been divorced early on... "Gotta spend some time, love, gotta spend some time with me!"
dwakeman1 i don't think he's singing to another person.... he is singing to himself.... the song is about loving yourself
😂😁😄Thanks for this commentary.. you brighten up my dark days.. I have to read it over and over ... such a nice family
could be, i suppose... i just can't help but see it as being not willing to be swept aside without at least trying your best to make your case for love.
Is there anything more brilliant?
Miss you guys so much… can’t wait to stare out window looking at whole new world… cause this is meaningless… my life is meaningless… I want to start a whole new life… and remember you in the back of my head
I saw Death Cab in concert 2 weeks ago and i gotta say, if you like this song and haven’t gone to see them live, you’re really missing out
Thanks for this. They're now added to my bicketlist
I've loved them for the past 14 years and tbh when I saw them live it was so disappointing...didn't lose any love for them but I'll stick to listening at home and setting up my vibe with them in the background..maybe I need to give their live show another try one day
I seen them last night and this song is sooo much better live.
Is the live intro as long as this video?
I love this song so much , the intro is so awesome . I've watched this a pile of times trying to figure out all the country's and city's that she is in , I love it. I'm not worldly by no means , I'm just a dirt farmer with head phones in the tractor listening to Great Tunes !!!
All I know is I've been to the place at 3:30. Cambodia!! Spent 2 months there over the summer.
New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, then where? Marakesh?? where in Cambodia?? Help!!
Wanted: Model to go around the world but look totally unimpressed
back then, when I was 8 years old, I would listen to this song, on loop, for hours... it gave me major feels
Great job. Nobody follows and films a person, in specific locations. I appreciate it
12 years later and this is still a banger!
it's timeless!
Absolutely!!!
Your mom is a banger
this is so good but you must hear “Winding Road” or “Live Not Survive” by SLT 🤘
sometimes a song defies its write time - by being a perfectly crafted piece of gold, that needs to be loved and possesed by people who posess the heart to understand a FKN good song
💙🎆🫶
I feel Death Cab and the Postal Service are both extremely underrated bands. Ben's voice is incredible both live and on his albums and his style has changed so many times it's really impressive. Saw them live for the first time a few years ago and I was truly impressed.
They’re playing a show together this year to celebrate their 20th anniversary of albums. Coming near to me - I REALLY WANT TO GO!!!!!
Never heard any other of their songs, but this one pops up in my mind from time to time. Theres something mythical about it, takes me to strange places, memories from the past. Not necessarily good places, but somehow hopeful idk haha. Cool piece
In my opinion....this song is a masterpiece up there with the greatest ballads in rock...zeplin, rush, tool, floyd, acdc, crew, gnr, etc etc
There is a measure i experience at live shows...it is a harmony in which a note of silence occurz. A resonence of cancel. Idk if it is planned...but i do know...there is harmony that well tuned
Totally agree!!!
even after all these years it just hits a certain note that nothing else can
Here is where every instrument starts in the intro:
buzzing: 0:10
Piano: 0:16
Bass: 0:21
Rhythm Guitar: 0:36
Drums: 1:05
Lead Guitar: 3:18
Marimba: 3:27
Backing vocals: 3:46
Lead vocals: 4:41

It's so nice to meet someone who *really* listens. Ah, 🎧.
This will legit be one of my favorite songs of all time for life.
🎉 who’s still air playing the drums and bassline in 2024
🙋♀️🙋♀️
😂😂😂😂😂 me
that song made me pick up my bass and play along
This song. So much nostalgia even though the first time I heard it was last year. This song is gorgeous and should be recognized more.
“And I long for this mirrored perspective, when we’ll be lovers, lovers at last”...pure beauty
But he's talking about seeing himself in her window as he stalks her, driving past her house, telling her they Will be lovers one day
Hearing it for the first time and I'm an instant fan. Love from London.
I absolutely adore reading international comments. It makes me feel connected to humanity, which of course, is bigger than my patriotism. It’s completely impractical, but I feel like we could be friends just because of this song. Cincinnati.
I’m a sucker for songs with no changes that rely on building the groove.
Great point. What other songs come to mind?

One of those "love at first listen" tracks
I heard this song in 2010 and thought of it like it was all the things I wish I could express to a woman I thought I was in love with. This used to be my love song.
I hear this song in 2020 and I'm glad I had time to think about my shit, and find a different woman who has taught me the meaning of empathy.
I still love all the instrumental parts of this song, but I take the words as from a time where all I wanted was love that served myself when I was possessive. It's crazy what a decade and a wonderful person can do to expand your view.
Yawn....
C K so very cool of you to feel so strongly about her that you want to tell the world! Keep the fire going!
We don't even need to see the video anymore to feel the vibe and resonate with the train riding being! 💗
4th july 2024. still playing this song. happy 4th to anyone that sees this comment today. cheers!
🇺🇸🇺🇸📍💯🙏🫵🏼
hell yeah
Cool comment.... regards from Spain, August 8,24

Just had a crazy flashback. I was 15 when this came out in 2008. Those were good years.
polifatts same
Not really. You were fifteen. It could have been the Middle Ages.😉
Yeah, thought life was horrible. Simpler for sure.
This is an example of how to use the music video budget to travel the world. Take that record label!
this song is oddly hypnotic. do other people feel that or just me?
Yes the build up got me in a daze
No, not just you, .. but all of us tooooo !! :0 ;)
Its just you 😆
Weirdly yes
It certainly is... can't stop listening to it...Has so many layers, it's fascinating !!!!
this Intro is longer than most generic pop songs, and there's two good reasons for that in my eyes.1) it's insanely catchy and hypnotic, 2) people actually want to hear it
The intro is the song.
if I could give a comment two thumbs up, I would have@
It was confirmed that the excessively long bass intro is supposed to emulate the obsession/ stalker vibe, which is what this song is about after all. Lol
8:31 intro
Toxoplasmosis (depression) is getting more popular
I still can't get enough of this song since I heard it when It was released. Just amazing!
like my favorite boy once said - we should never drive anywhere we can't get to in the time it takes to listen to this song ❤
The first 4-1/2 minutes....just musical genius... holy shit. Or, “hey, I have this epic Bass line, let’s just jamb and see what kind of awesomeness we can make with it....ready? Go!”
The drummer is low key fantastic too.
Right on!! Drummer and bass player just lose themselves. It’s incredible
I like playing along on bass and seeing what I can add to it. As simple as the rhythm is it's surprisingly easy to get off track if you're not paying attention
Sign of a real musicians
@@thewatchmen8654 Exact truth
After 30 yrs of live shows...this band still gives me shivers.. Amazing life altering experience
This song used to come on when I worked at Subway. Everybody would be like, "YES, my JAM" 🙌💕💕 I miss that
this is so good but you must hear “Winding Road” or “Live Not Survive” by SLT 🤘🎹
Brilliant!
What a fucking firestorm of a jam. Ages like whiskey.
I usually am impatient with long intros, but THIS is just too damn chill
same!!! they rock
For chill your very excited
SpartanWeaponUndefined 117 *you’re. I’m also a spelling nazi. A chill one.
just rediscovered this song and cannot get enough of the bass!!!! Such good music for the highway on a cloudy day
I love how the visuals add to the unsettling nature of a stalker and his prey.
Greatest intro in existence.
hell yea...usually I don't have the patience to listen to long intros...yet as always they nailed it
agreeed 100t
It has always blown me away.....It's like they build a perfect vessel to deliver a message......and the message is Fantastic...the build up is INTENSE!
Ohhhh, you should hear it live. It'll knock your socks off!
^^^^^This guy knows what he's talking about!
I never really considered myself a huge Death Cab fan but after hearing this song on the radio I am in love.
Yea…. This one and soul meets body are my favorite death cab songs
Now that's a real band and that is real music.
still listening to this in the year 2022
Cool story bro
Same its basically my daily go to song much love from Canada 🇨🇦 💕
that's not weird. This is litterally one of the most popular bands in the country, you liking them is not special. Nobody cares, please stop.
This album wood b considered heavy man.
The vinyl needs to be on the floor.
Hehehe
It wood crush all beneith c
Me, too. This video has been in my favorites for over a decade. I still watch it once in a while. The woman in this is so beautiful. Great song. The band scenes make ya feel cold lol.
Damn i commented 11 years ago..how time flies..n still love this song
i love how youtube shows your previous comments at the top. it's like oh, i've been here before a decade ago
@@sorrygtfo 🤣🤣🤣
You know what, that’s just so cool! 10 years, damned... this tune can’t be that old.
Indeed. The bass line slow-build start, those men in cold storage for the shoot, the images of travel by an explorer. The whole of it. I think this will be around a long time.
@@jessicadrennan7842 uh are you ok
This song ages like good wine and a well worn warm sweater and gives you comfort through out the years and reminds you of a day, a week, a month, a summer and a year that can never be recaptured but only experienced with this song playing as you jog through the memories, the love, the pain the loss, the want .................Damn this song.
I love how half the song is intro
I close my eyes, see the instruments, feel this amazing bass line and just drift off. Fantastic tune.
“Ben we’ve been playing for 3 hours now in the fridge just start singing”
lmaoooooo
"My drums are getting wet"
No.
Ffuuunnnnyyyyyy
EL!!!!! OH!!!! EL!!!!! 🤣
I remember seeing this video for the first time when it came out. I was 18 and I was immediately obsessed with being this girl, just one day getting on a plane and traveling the world with only what I had with me.
I love how they don’t rush the intro. 😌
love U Ben Gibbard and the Death Cab 4 Cuties talents. U changed my life when I moved to seattle in the 90s.
