    And for anyone who has done any sort of LARP before, which tips do you wish you would've known before starting?

    • @arsonist7013
      @arsonist7013 Год назад +2

      I started only this year, and something I did on my 1st trip was pack cooking supply's and food so I could prep my own meals, and a kettle for tea.
      Not a bad thing per say but at least at Empire LARP food is plentiful already, with street food and IC food around, and while you can cook your own food to save money it then takes up time that eats up into the time you should be spending out having fun.
      Also bring cash, out in the countryside those portable card readers don't always work.

      brilliant, but then it might be expected that i know how to play 😜

    • @himonightbreeze
      @himonightbreeze Год назад +6

      Been in it for about a year, and the one thing I wish I knew at the beginning is "Save your money for the things you want." I spent too much on bad boots, a cramped tent, and weapons that weren't safe to play with. ALWAYS check if a weapon is going to pass a safety check BEFORE you order it. Save your money for good boots made for larping. Get the biggest, nicest tent you can afford.

    • @MarisArmoury
      @MarisArmoury  Год назад +7

      @@himonightbreeze Yes! Definitely good tips! Rules can vary between games, and it is rather sad if you spend your money and can't even use it. And boots need to be comfortable. Either spend enough money for a good quality pair, or use non-larping specific boots. I'd prefer comfortableness over complete in-game-ness for boots. Or maybe use shoe covers!

    • @himonightbreeze
      @himonightbreeze Год назад +1

      @@MarisArmoury I got a pair of flat reenactment boots with ZERO cushion. I was ready to cry before opening announcements the first time I wore them. I should've just saved the money for solid boots made for walking though the woods for hours. Since then I've had to go back to a pair of heavy work boots that took forever to get the right insoles for and I can't really run in for very long, but they at least look the part.

    Tips I wish I had known: Pack a small essential bag to set near myself, like on the picnic table where my props are. My first few LARP events, I was rummaging to find my sunscreen, chapstick and my comb. Heading back to the tent to find something that I stored in my clothing suitcase was not fun.

    There is a story in my neck of the woods, that when the local larp tavern opened, the owner did a twirling sign dance in front of it to advertise, but the signs where shaped like axes. The white and blue paladins were still called because the neighbors only saw a madman flailing axes about. He tells that story often laughing so hard

    • @MarisArmoury
      @MarisArmoury  Год назад +11

      Heh, I can imagine it is indeed a funny story to look back on in hindsight. But it does show why you should be careful with weapon-shaped things in public.

    Our LARP has adopted a post-Pandemic approach of "Go small and show up" and I find that it works perfectly for new players and veterans alike. Don't make a big deal, find the best way to jump into the action with the minimal amount of stress, and grow from there.

  • @BattleKing00
    @BattleKing00 4 месяца назад +5

    A major tip that can break apart entire groups or individual friendships is if you get pissed off at someone in character, don’t take it out of character! There are a few characters that my character doesn't get along with, but don’t bring it out of game. The last event I was at, some Druid stuff happened which was new to our town and us as a town screwed up and the Druid character who was doing there own major personal plot that we screwed up was pissed off at all of us and screaming. To the point a couple people pulled her off to the side to make sure she was good out of game, which she was, just good at rp. And as soon as game ended we were laughing about the whole thing and joking. Another example is there is one character who is a absolute prick who thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread and his personality pisses me off out of game, but I have to be sure that I'm getting pissed of at the character and not the player, because the player has a much different personality, just excels at that type of role.

  • @bladestormjones
    @bladestormjones Год назад +41

    I think the most important thing I had to learn was "Don't be put off by big egos". It's related, but not quite identical to, tip number 9. Just because someone thinks they're the best thing since sliced bread and some people treat them that way doesn't mean that you should let them dictate what you can and can't do. Do what's fun for you, not what someone else thinks you should do. Chances are you'll meet other people who also just want to have fun and ignore the people who have overinflated opinions of themselves.
    Though, as a note, if that kind of behaviour is ruining your experience of the larp and the organisation isn't willing to step in (or worse, the organisers are the ones displaying that kind of behaviour) there's nothing wrong with deciding that a particular event isn't for you. Here in the Netherlands, at least, there's plenty of choice, and if you keep trying out different events chances are you'll find one that clicks for you. Don't let one bad experience ruin your potential enjoyment of the hobby (and that goes for new players and veterans alike).
    However as a final caveat, also don't be afraid to admit that maybe larp isn't for you. Not every hobby is for everyone, and not everything that sounds cool on paper works for you in real life. If you don't find something that works for you, that's also fine. Don't force yourself to keep looking when you already know you're not going to enjoy the experience, and instead enjoy the positive experiences that you did have while looking.

    • @MarisArmoury
      @MarisArmoury  Год назад +5

      That was quite the essay 😂. But absolutely, larp is still a social activity which means you will have to work with people, and not everyone will understand what works to make it the most fun for everyone. Mention it to the organisation, and try to play around them.
      And the last tip is also a good one. I have said it before: larp is not a hobby for everyone, but.. I do think larp is suited for more people than they might initially believe.

  • @ThePageTurnerPT
    @ThePageTurnerPT Год назад +36

    Somethings I've heard a LOT from veteran LARPers are:
    1.) Bring many socks. If you think you have enough socks, bring more. Everyone's nose will thank you (this also includes other cleanliness items, but socks specifically since they'll bet sweaty and smelly the fastest)
    2.) Bring comfortable shoes. You're not going to have a good time if your feet hurt within an hour of a 3 day game
    3.) Always have a water carrying container on you. An ER trip from dehydration and/or heat stroke is very not good

    • @MarisArmoury
      @MarisArmoury  Год назад +8

      Yes! And the multiple socks are also important for another reason, if your socks are wet you will be cold. Being able to swap them for dry ones is the best thing. during 'normal' weather I always bring at least the amount of days + 1 pairs of socks. If the forecast is very wet I bring two pairs per day. With that, if it is cold, I also have dry socks to wear at night.

But generally, larp is an activity where you will come into close proximity with a lot of people. Do keep in mind, that this answer is specific to where I larp, do ask your local event if they still have precautions, because that can differ.

So like you said, I'm gonna have to see what safety precautions a place I'm interested in has before I go. If people are just running around without masks when they are talking or yelling at each other to stay in character or socializing in a camping environment without social distancing then I'll have to decline attending.
