Pattern Magazines Can't Be That Difficult Right?... || Sci Fi Larp Costume
Finally it is here! The second half of how I made the costume for the epic sci-fi larp Odysseus. No worries if you haven't watched the first part, they are pretty standalone, first part is making pattern for the top, this one is all about putting it together.
I don't think it has ever been this close with finishing a costume. Usually I do manage to finish them at home and I don't need to take the sewing supplies with me. Nonetheless I am super happy with it, as it resulted in a very comfy and cool looking scifi costume, that definitely fit the 19 year old popstar character I was going to be playing!

The Most Complicated Pattern I Have Ever Made! || Sci-Fi Larp Costume

Sci-fi larps allow you to make such varied types of costumes, I'm now attending multiple ones and every sci-fi costume is completely different. In this case, having a pre-written character also helps a lot with generating ideas and a style. This costume was built for Odysseus larp, an awesome battlestar ga...

I've watched it multiple times and I'm still confused on the width/waist part. When cutting the 2 pieces for the upper leg, I'm cutting both pieces total waist circumference x upper leg length? So example 40 inch waist, 20 inch waist to knee (yes I know these are odd Proportions easy numbers) plus tie pocket and seam allowance. So I would cut 2 pieces that are 42 inches by 27inches (I allowed for a larger seam)?

There are some cool innovations with mushroom leather recently as well. They can grow a piece of any size or shape in 2 weeks and eliminate offcuts by growing it in a custom shaped mould to suit the pattern. There's also bacteria textiles that they can dye patterns into the material by using UV lasers to activate a gene expression that causes the bacteria to synthesise more melanin. Pretty neat imo. From a vegan ethics perspective (rejection of exploitation, commodification, and rights violation of sentient animals) I often hear about leather not contributing to animal death or suffering because it's a by-product of the meat and dairy industry and it would otherwise be wasted, but the reality is that the overwhelming majority of leather waste is offcuts from footwear, and chrome and blue leather meaning industry has already committed resources into the product and definitionally no longer views it as a "by-product" but a financial liability they have a fiduciary responsibility to offload. Additionally, if the goal of the animal rights movement is to end slaughter it's in the best interest of everybody to find sustainable alternatives before demand overtakes supply. Leather tanning at the current scale is a driver of chemical runoff and water waste, so investing in vegan alternatives that both have a drastically reduced environmental footprint, don't violate rights, and have promising scalability is a great thing, even if we have to rethink the tools and techniques to work with the materials

my main concern is durability. If you are making something that durability isn't a concern then vegan "leather" (I put it in quotes because to me it shouldn't be called leather since it is not from an animal) can be a good alternative. But in my experience vega leather will start peeling off after some use specially with high friction or folding and it is not as breathable as real leather so it offers less thermal confort. Generally if you light a lighter near a vegan leather it will light up on fire
