The venerable German Racing Championship, known under the abbreviation DRM in the 1970s as popular as the DTM later, was shaken to its foundations. BMW head of sport Jochen Neerpasch, who has always been a friend of daring youth projects, relies on three wild youngsters and pushes the idea of a junior team through to the board for the 1977 season. The BMW racing strategist is concerned with proving the opposite of the popular belief that only experienced and therefore older drivers can move the expensive DRM cars to the limit. "We also have to do something for the next generation," according to Neerpasch's philosophy, "otherwise the DRM will soon become obsolete and there will be no new talent." Messrs. Heyer, Grohs, Ertl, Hezemans, Krebs and Hennige are not necessarily the youngest anymore.
The junior team field test is the first of its kind in German motorsport. People are of course enthusiastic about the new idea and the fans are looking forward to the hearty battle. Neerpasch's three juniors Eddie Cheever (19/USA), Marc Surer (25/SWZ) and Manfred Winkelhock (24/GER) ensure that the 1977 season in the 2-litre division mutates into the wildest in the 13-year history of DRM.. In identical BMW 320s they are supposed to battle hard with one another to make an established fire up their butts - which they manage to do impressively.
Even from the extensive test drives in advance, it is rumoured that the young heroes are stepping on the gas too much. It is rumoured that cars are getting dismantled - which Neerpasch, with a mild smile, refers to the realm of fables. However, right at the free practice session at the start of the season in Zolder in mid-March, Eddie Cheever made sure that the rumours of scrap on the private practice runs could be true. The US boy fired his 320 so vehemently into the botany that half of the front end was torn away and the car had to be written off as an irreparable total loss.
On the day of the race, a good 25,000 spectators flooded the Zolder circuit, more than ever before at a DRM race in Belgium. Neerpasch's boys show what they're really capable of: Surer starts from pole and wins sensationally, Winkelhock also finishes on the podium in third place and Cheever finishes fifth in the replacement car. "It'll probably soon turn to wild hitting and stabbing in the races," sighs Ford sports boss Mike Kranefuss after the first taste of Neerpasch's toddler group.
Already the second race on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring confirmed the fears of the Ford camp. What the three BMW disciples perform puts the spectators in raptures and the opponents in anger and horror. The junior squad doesn't just attack famous names, but the boys also give each other a good time. Mentor Neerpasch then calmly accepted the flood of complaints. Even within BMW's own ranks there is displeasure with the rude actions. Ironically, Harald Grohs, in the Faltz-BMW himself a veteran, castigated the young colleagues as "completely disturbed, cracked and insane". Ford spearhead driver Hans Heyer even allegedly remarked for a "head shot in all three" and Ronnie Peterson, otherwise none squeamish, mumbles something about the drivers being "completely crazy".
After that, the other races are more civilized. Up to the Norisring, there are always at least two BMW juniors on the podium at every DRM race. Marc Surer proves to be the most consistent and collects so many points that he travels to Nuremberg in second place. And that's where the big uproar occurs.
A surprise entry was the 1.4 “Baby” Porsche 935, with the weight reduced to 750 kg, the capacity to 1.4 litres, one turbo and 370 HP. The car was troublesome and clocked only 13th after final practice. The new Zakspeed Capri car for Heyer was still being developed, but he still clocked pole, Röhrl, replacing the injured Krebs, was third fastest, behind Cheever. Hezemans had built a new car as well, and was fourth fastest.
Full house, 100,000 spectators, the usual hot heat. Porsche's small "Baby Porsche" with a two-liter turbo engine competes for the first time against BMW and Ford, Röhrl burns off a violent but brief brilliant firework display of fast driving in the Schnitzer 2002 turbo. And then BMW junior Surer makes his memorable appearance after a pit stop.
Cheever is in the lead, Heyer and Winkelhock are battling it out for second place when Surer comes back a lap down - with no chance of points. Whether it was a coincidence or wanted by the BMW directors is an open question - in any case, the Swiss lined up ahead of the fighting duo Heyer/Winkelhock. Surer spreads out, pushes a little here and pushes a little there. Well, Heyer isn't someone you do something like that with without him not reacting. The duel between the two builds up, foul and revenge foul alternate in ever faster succession. Both cars are increasingly dissolving into their component parts, Heyer's escort is like a moving wreck. To top it off, Surer pushes his opponent off the piste, Heyer fights back, both spin across the piste - and Winkelhock is through.
In front of the grandstand, Heyer climbs out of his escort, who has collapsed, and lets himself be celebrated as a hero. The ovations of the spectators are certain, Surer has long been identified as the villain and is quoted as one of the sports commissioners. Their decision: a fine of 1,000 marks and a report to the sports court. Because the race is recorded in full for the ZDF broadcast, the material with the delicate argument is also available. On the following Saturday, the ZDF sports studio dealt extensively with the case again. Studio guest is Hans Heyer and his Escort, Surer is not even invited.
Meanwhile, threatening letters are being received at BMW in Munich. A fanatical Ford fan writes: "Death to the juniors", another announces "to burn the Swiss flag in public". The date for the sports court hearing at the Frankfurt Airport Hotel is set for July 28, a Thursday. Two days later, the DRM run at the German GP in Hockenheim is on the agenda, four days before that there will be a run in Diepholz.
But Diepholz does not take place for the BMW juniors. As an internal reaction to the incidents at the Norisring, Neerpasch put all three in the penalty box. "Why Winkelhock and Cheever?" asks the press. "For educational reasons and to send a signal to the outside world," is the answer from Munich. Instead, a "BMW Gentlemen Team" will line up in Diepholz. The Formula 1 drivers Hans-Joachim Stuck and Ronnie Peterson as well as the US warhorse David Hobbs take over the 320s of their junior colleagues who were sentenced to watch.
