    Andrew gets people's take on the fat acceptance movement and whether society should accept overweight people the way they are and forget any notion of whether it's healthy, a factor of genetics or lifestyle, etc.
    "The fat acceptance movement, also known as fat pride, fat empowerment, and fat activism, is a social movement which seeks to eliminate the social stigma of obesity from social attitudes by pointing out the obstacles which are faced by fat people to those who are less fat. Areas of contention include the aesthetic, legal, and medical approaches to fat people." - wikipedia

      A bit of nuance could go a long way.
      Yes being morbidly obese i never healthy. That being said you can be overweight and healthy (just look at defensive football players for example) just as you can be normal weight with an extremely unhealthy diet.
      There is also an issue with doctors blaming health issues on weight instead of actually examining their patients, which can result in health issues being undiagnosed and untreated.
      In the end, people should exercise and move regularly as well as eat healthy and not focus so much on weight.

    • @SorryBones
      @SorryBones 11 месяцев назад +3

      I have a thyroid problem, badly, and I dropped from 315 lbs to 238 and still going. “I have a thyroid problem” is a outright denial in order to cope. It’s easier to accept their weight as undeniable fact instead of something they have done to themselves that will take large, sustained effort to fix. They should ask their doctor if a diet would improve their thyroid health, but will just claim they tried and it didn’t work like you said. Try doesn’t equal did, what they need is someone to hold them accountable and the self-reflection for sustained motivation. A lot of people only get one of those things, many have neither.
      If you wanna know how I did it, I didn’t have a personal trainer or anything. Your statement about exercise allowed to be an afterthought is true. I just cut out the foods I knew were bad (ice cream, chocolate pretzels, fried foods) and the weight flew off, even with little to no exercise. I still ate plenty of great food I already enjoyed, still ate out, just not the stuff that was killing me. The only person that ever stopped me was myself.

    I think the distinction needs to be made between "body positivity" and "fat acceptance". Body Positivity is a good thing for society. For example, people should not feel terrible about things like being a bit bony or chubby, having blemishes or stretch marks, or things they can't control like their face, chest, privates, etc. Fat acceptance, however, is not a good thing. Glamorizing obesity, when it is straight up killing people at an alarming rate, is not okay. It's fine being a bit overweight, but once you cross into obesity territory, no that is not healthy no matter what you tell yourself.

Finally now im a steady 194, powerlifting, feeling great every single morning. Basically what im getting at is that we should not accept people who reach an incredibly unhealthy weight in either direction. Ridiculously fat/skinny and you run severe health and mental issues down the road. Take care of yourself, watch what you eat. Because it's a massive drain on our healthcare system and economy. We could have a universal healthcare plan if people actually took their health seriously instead of treating their bodies like a carnival sideshow. It's teaching bad habits to kids who will be more likely to also be fat and unhealthy and it looks terrible, which matters. If someone didn't bathe for a week someone would say something. But if another persons gut is hanging down their pants then it's "not nice" to remind them their arteries are clogging up and they're poisoning their bodies. It's really weird that has to even be said. Soon we'll think nothing of someone who's blackout drunk by 10 AM. They're healthy at any blood alcohol level!

  • @wesrichmond
    @wesrichmond Год назад +5

    Here's the accurate answer: you could probably be healthy across several markers of health if your body composition is higher in body fat %. Conversely, you could be within a "healthy" range of body fat % and have health issues. However, research suggests there is a relationship between health problems the further your bodyfat % deviates from a healthy range (in both the positive and negative direction). It's a touchy subject these days, but that's the truth.

    Something it's taken me a long time to learn is that people generally go through cycles, food is a universal ccomfort (that's why there's a category of food called comfort food) and often you can find those who are struggling with things going on in their lives will generally just eat a little bit more than they should and take a little less time to work on themselves as they're mentally not focused on their appearance.

    My understanding of the size acceptance movement is that they want fat people to not be seen as less than for merely being fat. Unfortunately that often gets misconstrued into "being fat is morally good, preferable, healthy". It really just comes down to societal beauty standards and currently being fat is seen as unattractive/less than by enough people for a movement like this to exist

    I’ve always been thin. Always struggled to gain weight. I guess I don’t eat as much as others are eating. I deliver groceries for a living which is a lot of cardio burning calories and I may be burning more than I put in. But I can’t imagine being in a largely overweight body. Breaking chairs. Struggling to find nice clothes. Taking up two or more seats on a plane. All the humiliation. The inability to hike or do activities. You’re pretty much confined to a lazy boy at a certain point with Netflix or games as the only thing you can do for fun. Screw that. We need to keep an eye on our health. If we lose control, we lose a life of experiences. People who lose weight are always so much happier when they are no longer a prisoner in their own bodies! I watched those weight loss shows growing up and could see it and the positive effects being healthy has as opposed to just being fat and accepting it. I hope everyone struggling with their weight gets to their peak health whether they eat too much or too little. It’s hard but don’t we want to put the work in to be the best version of ourselves?

    An interesting tidbit is the relevance of the gut microbiome. The particular ecosystem of the gut can make a massive difference on what size you are, among many other things, to the point that receiving a fecal transplant from an obese person can make a slim recipient develop obesity. In a situation like this the persons original gut bacteria were possibly consuming a large amount of their consumed calories or I imagine more likely the new gut bacteria induced cravings in the recipient for their preferred nutrient types (for example sugars found in junk foods) thus proliferating the new gut bacteria further and exacerbating the process.
