  • This is our first "how-to" video for the Gulfstream G-IV. Today we are showing how to start the APU and get the electrics on line. This is by no means an all encompassing lesson on the subject; it is simply the basics of what we do on a daily basis to start the APU.

    I flew a lot of different corporate planes. Lear 60, Hawkers, Challengers, Boeings and a few others. My favorite was the Gulfstream G-IV. It flew like a big T-38. Thank you for the nostalgia... such a fun plane!

    Hi Sean,
    A visitor from the UK here. You're channel is a recent find and I've thoroughly enjoyed the videos you've made so far.
    I am extremely impressed with the high standard of professionalism the two of you show in the cockpit. Excellent CRM, situational awareness and flying skills. The two of you are a fantastic advert for the organisation you fly for and I would be very comfortable knowing the two of you were the cockpit crew on any flight I took. I doubt your passengers get to have much dealings with you directly, but I think if potential customers got to see you in action it could well sway them to use your organisation over others.
    I too would be interested in some more techincal stuff about the G-IV. Something about the autopilot, autothrottles and flight director would be of particular interest if you get the time. What would also be good would be a short video about Francine and her work. I would guess there's plenty of preparation work she needs to do before your passengers get to board the aircraft.
    Thank you to the three of you for sharing the corporate pilot life with us. One that is probably not as glamourous as we imagine on occasion!

    Years ago, I used to do some design engineering work that involved using a G-IV APU (which is made by Honeywell if I remember correctly). I helped build a prototype military aircraft start cart in which I was responsible for the controls and had to interface with all the APU electrical signals to show correct RPM's and EGT on a panel I designed. I love your videos, keep it up!!

    Excellent video--just some clarifications--
    APU cannot be just refered as a generator or so, rather it's a small engine using aircraft fuel to provide Bleed Air and Electrical Powe while engines are not running
    As the name suggests, conditioned air means to cool the cabin while it's hot and to heat up while it's cold..
    You can put the APU bleed on immediatelyvafter start, however it will come ON only after 2 min.

    Side note on a gIV you can run engines with the cowling down on right side the apu won’t melt it. It’s the g450 550 and 650 that you need to worry about and there is an indicator on the over head on those that will illuminate if the right engine cowling is down

    The APU comes in handy when you are at an airport where they do not have a GPU. I would imagine that it is more of a convenience item during start-up than connecting to a GPU. Greg from Premier 1 Driver who I am a big fan of gave a presentation similar to your's on how to start the Premier's engines. He has no APU and must be connected to a GPU for start. He can start one engine and then the other immediately after. No waiting involved. He saw that as a positive. I believe you have to wait a short period of time after starting one engine and then the other. The way I see it, 'It is all good"! Love the G-IV and your videos!

      The G-IV actually uses air (not electrics) to start the engines, so no waiting between engine starts for us either. But the problem with that is we must have the APU up to start the engines, or have a huffer air cart. A GPU wont help get the engines going for us.

    I think a lot of people get Flow vs checklist confused when dealing with turbo props and jets. Maybe you can discuss how you use flow and checklist when in the cockpit. Thank you!

    I really enjoy these videos and appreciate all the time and effort you put into making them. I’m curious as to what the small screen above the PFD on the co-pilot side is (as well is the series of buttons to the left of the screen) - I assume those are the navigation/autopilot mode indicators and control panel? I saw in one video that the control panel also includes buttons that operate the digital checklist. Once again, thank you.

      That's called the Display controller, and there is one on both sides as well. They control many functions including the checklist and PFD/MFD layout. I'm planning a Tech video on these for the near future.

    Also provides emergency power in case of a huge bird strike. Your plane is probably not as bouyant as an A-320

      Yes indeed...makes a big difference for ground cooling on a hot day, also gets those engines turning a little better than the -100.

    Really appreciate your videos! Sometime, please show us how the G-IV ran off the runway at KBED. I recall it had to do with locked controls. Did Gulfstream come up with a fix so it doesn't happen again? Or is it still just a checklist item?

      I will definitely talk about that one on video...but it was a control lock issue. Gulfstream redesigned the control lock mechanism so that the power levers cannot move with the control lock on, but not all airplanes have had the mod completed yet. So yeah...still a checklist item.

    If on AC ground power and you start the APU, does it automatically switch the the APU generator and vice versa back to ground when connecting the ground power. Can you stop that from happening and remain on ground power, even with the APU running? Thanks.

    How long is the start up procedure take, how long do you normally get to the jet before the passengers arrive, finally do you keep lots of fuel in the tank when the jet is not in use and is in the hangar.Thanks

      All great questions...the startup procedure only takes a few minutes, but there are many system checks and FMS procedures that have to be done before starting the engines. We usually arrive at the plane an hour before passengers to get everything done. If we had to, we could go from opening the door to starting the engines in less than 10 minutes though. As far as the fuel, we prefer to not have lots of fuel in the tanks while sitting around as it stresses the gear. So we typically have around 5,000 pounds in it.

      As long as the APU is working properly, we don't need a cart for anything...except the lavatory...HAHA!

      Yuck, no doubt. I come from the King Air world, the PT6 is electric start. If the battery was even a bit weak, the ITT would spike so it was generally a good idea to do a cart start on at least one engine - left - and then a generator-assisted start on the right engine

      The G-IV is only allowed to use the APU for electrical power in flight, so the only time we would really use it is if we lost one of the alternators in flight.

    You discuss, after the apu is running, turning on the air which, in turn, caused the exhaust temp to rise. But what does "turning on the air" actually do to the apu, or to the airplane?

      This works the same on the APU as it does on the main engines. We are taking bleed air off of the compressor section of the turbine engine to provide high pressure air for the cabin pressurization system. The pneumatic system of the APU is restricted to ground use only, so basically this is just to heat or cool the interior of the airplane. The air coming out of the APU (or engine) is vey hot from being compressed, so it has to go through a PACK, or pneumatic air conditioning kit, before entering the cabin.       So why does the exhaust temperature rise so much when you turn on the bleed air? I assume since you're diverting some of the air to the PACK for the cabin, you're not getting rid of the exhaust air as quickly which might cause a temperature rise. Keep up with the great videos!

      A private company owns the plane, but Presidential Aviation manages it. Time at home varies, sometimes weeks at a time. Other times we're gone for weeks.

      We keep our seats so we don't have to constantly move the headsets back and forth and change seat/rudder positions. When Jon is out sick or on vacation, I move to the left and have a contract guy in the right.

    I have a couple of questions: when do you need GPU to start the APU?
    Does the APU stay on once the main engines come on or you turn it off afterwards..?
    If you have multiple stops during a day do you guys leave the APU on before the next flight or its always a start from a cold and dark cockpit?

      The GPU would only be needed to start the APU if the main batteries were dead. I've never had this happen to me, but I know pilots who have been in this situation. Usually we will shut the APU once the engines are started. The exception to this is when it is very hot outside and the cabin needs the extra cooling from the APU. In this case we will leave the APU on until nearing the runway, then switch the air system over to the main engines. If we have less than an hour between flights, we will generally leave the APU running. If it's more than an hour, we will usually shut it down and start from dark.

    I am not a pilot but when do you shut it down? After engine start before depature? And is it restarted prior to landing? Just wondering.

      Every airplane is different, but in the G-IV we shut it down before takeoff and start it after landing. It isn't allowed to be used in flight. In the hawker, we shut it down and start it in the air.

      There is no key to the booze cabinet, open bar!!! You do however have to find the key that is hidden somewhere on the exterior of the plane to get inside first, of course.

    Do you know of any G-IV addon for X-Plane Flight Sim ? How many flight hours do you need min. to Captain a G-IV?

      I'm sorry, but I can't help you out for the Flight Sim. As far as hours required to be Captain on a Part 91 Gulfstream, there really aren't any legal minimums. As long as a company will hire you, and an insurance company will cover you, you're good to go.

      We try to put it in the hangar to prevent having to deice, but sometimes that isn't an option. So yes, we do have to from time to time.

    How do you manage the rest during the flight? lets supose you are having a 10 hours leg? any additional pilot is mandatory? regards from Brazil.

      That is a question with many answers. It all depends on whether we are flying the owners or if we are chartering the plane. With the owners, the law has no limit on flight time. On charter flights, we are restricted to 10 hours of flight time before we must start adding crew members. Before we make a long flight, we always try to get lots of rest so that we are alert for the entire flight.
