As the owner of a DINAN S2 E39 M5 I must say it is one of the finest cars I’ve ever owned. Fast, fun and exclusive. I also rebuilt the engine with stronger forged internals and added a 200 shot of nitrous.
Anthony Rodriguez I have a friend here in Miami that formerly worked on cosworth race motors. He took it apart and meticulously took his time putting everything back together selecting all the parts for me to buy. It made 473 WHp on the DYNO after in was tuned and in 2years of daily driving I have never touched the engine other than oil changes
I plan on picking up a LeMans Blue E39 M5 this year, ideally from EAG (I have no budget and want the cleanest car I can find). Great to have this information!
You are correct! It is a funky system with additional scavenging pumps but now that i think about it...someone must have told me it was dry sump years ago and I just accepted it. My bad!
I had a very unique E39 M5, the trim was in Champaign leather. The exterior was sepia violet metallic. Best M I've ever owned! Was a pain to maintain though
As a second vehicle, that I'm only goimg to put 100-200 miles a month on...would you reccomend it? According to my research, they are the best sports sedan of all time..... Are they?
There’s a great cup holder that goes into the console. I bought this thing 4 years ago for $90 and it holds every cup I’ve thrown at it. Just FYI. I have never used the oem cup holders ever.
I can only imagine repair costs on that M5. My 530 E39 hasn’t been cheap but I will say it has been thru so much that most cars would have given out by now. The straight six engine noise and softer/suspension pitching give it character and have taught me to be aware of body movement while driving hard.
If you can't already - learn to wrench - even if its just oil, filters and spark plug changes. The coils can be bought from ecstuning.com and replaced when you do spark plugs. 530 is a lovely machine. Set of Bilstein B6s and good tyres would make it handle beautifully.

Fun fact about the wipers: the right hand drive cars didn’t change the direction of the wipe, so they wipe towards the passenger side. It covered a big enough range to not have to change it. Just another reason to love the E39!
I love my E39 530i, from 2002, it drives like a dream, just did the radiator, clutch, and just recently went through 3 FSU units, one lasted over a year, the other a day, and the current one is still going. Problem with my 530i it has a ticking problem, and not to mention it has a crap load a of mods, a lightweight fly wheel, a cold air intake, and not to mention it has some M5 mods. Also, we had a rare e36 blue M3, it was a peice of crap, and wasn't maintained right, by the previous owner.
I love my E39, and I completely get why you love yours! I bought my 528i Touring (with a stick(!) new in 2000. I budget about 1000 Euros a year for it. Way cheaper than a car payment, and I will drive it until the wheels fall off, and then I'll buy new wheels? Why, because there is no more beautiful car out there, with the right balance of comfort and performance. Blew a radiator and pulled the head bolts on the Autobahn a couple months ago, and found a low km replacement engine for it. 4,000 Euros later (including replacement clutch kit, plastic and rubber pieces replaced) and she drives like new. I told my wife to bury me in it. F the Bangle era crap. I take care of her and she takes care of me.

I have a Dinan S1 and when I'm on mass pike I'm always attracting staties. I daily my M5 as well, and I love it. Only thing about driving it with the dropped suspension I have is the fact that ALL OF NEW ENGLAND is purposely paved to eventually have potholes (northern Mass especially!), so I have to drive cautiously everywhere. Oh, and fyi, E39 M5 doesn't have a dry sump oil system.
Really, the car doesn't get up up on it's toes until you are over 100. It has the amazing ability to feel more secure at speeds increase. And they are truly fast on the highway. BTW, ditch the stagger. Square them up to 275s and understeer goes away. Make huge car payments ($750 /mo will pay for a lot of booboos), or daily drive and maintain a fabulous car. The choice is easy for me.
Definitely right about how it feels over 100mph. I talked about that in a video a couple years ago on a long drive. I don't think I'd like the look of the rear wheel size up front to put 275's up there. Also wouldn't like the look of a 275 squeezed onto the stock front wheel size.

Have you owned a 540i or have any experience with it? My uncle has one and I've got my eye on it when he upgrades in a couple years. I've heard it has all the benefits of the m5 with none of drawbacks (mechanical complexity and expense of repair).
I have owned one and have owned 2 e39's. They are great cars, with a muffler delete ( or if you do not wish to go down that route) an AFE Cold air intake does the trick and gives you a very nice induction sound of the V8. Having driven and ridden in 3 M5 e39's I can tell you that, yes it does pull for a bit longer and harder than a 540i but not that much, where the differences are I would say, is the handling dynamics and also the engine itself are marginally better than a 540i however with a few mods if you wish, you could get it to handling like an M5 and power wise honestly the 286 is a decent amount but you could always slap a Supercharger on it and be a happy person
@@111tombomb thanks for the tips man. probably won't slap a supercharger on it but i've heard videos of it straight piped on youtube and its beautiful so might have to do that. as for the rest i'll see, picking it up later this year.
The 540 is not “all the benefits with none of the drawbacks.” The steering is wretched in the 540- not only do you have a recirc ball set up, it has a much slower ratio than the m5. Also, the suspension choice is important for e39’s. I’m on koni yellow’s on stock springs and I find it to be a very good “OEM+” set up. That plus a dinan rear sway bar and Michelin PS4S tires makes corner carving actually enjoyable in this 4000lb car. I also daily’d an e39 528it and I much rather have a 530 over a 540. The i6 steering is fantastic.
It’s very rare to find E39 M5’s in UK... I want to own one in the future. And when you mentioned it doesn’t have a cup holder, my mother will not enter my car :(
Had the same problem with Robins at my place. You should take the nest out before the lay eggs or you’ll be cleaning the crap off your car and fighting them even more.
You speak a lot of truth about these cars. I had one for 3 years, LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather. It was a stunning combo. They are not inexpensive cars to own. They aren't super unreliable, but when you do need to buy parts for one, they have the M tax attached. I thought mine was worth every penny, but I did spend a lot of pennies on it and it was completely stock like yours. The e39 M5 was my introduction to the BMW M world, I've since moved onto an e36 M3. No doubt the M5 was a better car in many ways but the e36 has its advantages. I do a lot of autocross and the M5 was just a bit heavy, not uncompetitive due to the torque, but it wasn't pretty in the turns. It's definitely taste, but I do think the e36 is the prettier car. But most of all, price to own, the e36 M3 is way more wallet friendly on repairs and consumables. Enjoy your M5, they are awesome!
They feel more similar than you'd expect. Other than the torque monster that the S62 is, the e39 M5 and e46 M3 felt way more similar to me than the e46 to e36 M3 feel to me. There's a lot of things that could be compared, but the three similarities strike me as: Similar throttle response, near identical interiors from the drivers view, and they both feel wide and stable.
Nice E39 man. My favorite body styles E39 and E46. l it's hard to find clean and well maintained one. You mentioned it's hard to rev match. Try to do CDV delete and linear throttle remap if it's possible on E39 ecu. Day and night difference on my e46, pure precision. It feels almost like old school cable throttle
in sport mode the throttle map is a lotttt nicer and intuitive. Its only tricky when that button is not pressed, because the initial dip into the pedal does next to nothing lol
A bit surprised by the understeer comment. I've never driven one, so I'm not doubting your assessment but I've never heard it mentioned by other reviewers? Would you mind elaborating a bit?
It's a staggered setup with a safe alignment from the factory...Understeer is the default mode. If you chuck it in and let the tail swing then of course it will oversteer. Overall its relatively balanced but like most consumer cars they are designed to let the front wash out before the tail. As far as other reviewers, they may just be borrowing a car and not driving hard enough to experience it, or they don't actually understand the dynamics of a car and are repeating what they've read in magazines (More common than you'd think!)
@@TedwardDrives Well that was fast. There are a few reviewers I trust, like Matt Farah for example, (and you ofc) and he seems to think it's an awesome car. I guess I have to go drive one so I can get the feel of it myself. Thanks for the explanation! Stay safe and keep the great content coming!
If the suspension are soft you maybe should check the springs etc? I have and had some m-sports e39 and they stick pretty good on the road to be a "big" sedan. Maybe not like series but stil pretty good.
Reliable M car pretty much just leaves e36 M3. S52's are solid . e46, youre looking at rear subframe issues, valve adjustments, bearings, and the list goes on lol.
Ouch! controversial but ill take the "yes" side with two simple examples...S62 is not as volatile as S54, plus no valve adjustment needed. And no Rear subframe issues.
I had a 540i 6sp I bought with 100k and put probably 20k on it. My first 01 m5 I bought with 80k and put an additional 60k on it as a daily. Replaced the clutch twice and the window regulator a couple times Manet some other random stuff but pretty solid. It did start seeing the wear. My current m5 I hardly drive but I got it with 80k had to change the clutch and the rod bearings because it spun one. It has 89k now but seems to have more random small issues like the pcd module going out. The e39 is a solid car. My e63 has something wrong with it every time I look at it. I have had 3 because I love the e39.
'If you plan on getting one in the 14-15k range, you will get into the 20's quickly'. The most real advice ever. Even maintained cars of that price range are gonna do typical German slighted moody teenager things. You fix them if they sit, and fix them if they are drivers. Congratz on the CEL. Took me a full year and around 7k to get rid of my first one!
I have one and it has been in the shop for over a year because I can't get the freaking mafs, so I bought a 400+hp 135i last week and it is a freaking missile the former owner told me it butchers m3s
The part where you said it didn't feel like it was pulling at 2500rpm with 60% throttle, do you think that could be a sensor issue. I've got a 328ci and so does my sister, I've found it mostly comes down to how well the sensors are working but atm my car isn't performing as well but I'm not sure what.. I've replaced the two of the camshaft ones, the crankshaft one and the maf. Each of them improved the car particularly the maf. I originally fixed the vanos because the symptoms were the same as if it was the culprit but it made no difference.
I wanna get a project car similar to this, what would you guys recommend? I know very little about cars but I want to learn. Looking for a sporty 2/door

Just subscribed. I like your honesty and opinion. You made me remember my car. Well I actually always have it on my mind. Will get another one when the opportunity knocks.
Wish i could afford an M car... Here in Croatia our avg. paycheck is 750$ and a liter of gas costs almost 2$... Its a Huge struggle.
We need to change that
@@chucksirron6346 I agree, but nothing will probably change. Maybe there is a better Croatia in Heaven, who knows.
@@dinoj8126 maybe you will be angry about my idea. I mean no harm. I think Croatia is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. I rode through it for 10 days on the way to Washington DC last year. You have a lot to give to the world. You are small though. You used to be bigger as Yugoslavia. I know this ended in disaster but doesn't mean it can't be tried again.
@@chucksirron6346 yugoslavia maybe Sounds good for sombody who didnt expirience it. My family like a majority of families were bullied by the communist regime only because they were Christian and considered themselfs Croats, not Yugoslavs, and they were discriminated whole their life, job, human rights, real-estates, everywhere basically. Yugoslav as a nation never existed and never will. + No country in the region has peaceful meanings to eachother... Its a mess that we can discuss for days.
P.s sorry for my grammar.
I really hate the look 2 tone interiors you get in these. The all black interior in yours is so much better. More classic and suit the car way better.
It’s very rare to find E39 M5’s in UK... I want to own one in the future. And when you mentioned it doesn’t have a cup holder, my mother will not enter my car :(
Haha nice! It has cup holders but crummy ones
@@TedwardDrives I’ll be prepared when I get one then 😅😅
That rear vapor barrier looks like it’s leaking. Those door cards are looking a lil moldy at the bottom 😩
Had the same problem with Robins at my place. You should take the nest out before the lay eggs or you’ll be cleaning the crap off your car and fighting them even more.
Got lucky..this year the nest is on the neighbors side of the garage! lol
I really want to drive an E39 M5 to compare it to my E46 M3! I just did a couple videos like this on my M3 haha
Tedward and his big love: the orange bottle 😂
Hey! I live in MA and just picked up a 440xi Gran Coupe M Performance last month - would love for you to review it!
2:41
HE DID IT!!!!!
Nah it all checks out and rides just like a stock m5 should. It is of course very sticky. Always impressed how this takes a corner
Maybe it’s a redundant question but do you service this car when it’s required?
I love the honesty. Great video
As an 18 yr old id love this car...
You should get a Shark tune for the sport mode memory alone.
Out of the 'M' cars which one would you say is best for your first one to get? I really like the E92 M3 but wondered about reliability.
Reliable M car pretty much just leaves e36 M3. S52's are solid . e46, youre looking at rear subframe issues, valve adjustments, bearings, and the list goes on lol.
Best looking m5
Need for Speed:Hot Pursuit. I have to admit that was spurned the love
My friend Alex, who was driving the quattroporte in the intro, said the exact same thing!
Ultimate Cup Holders. Com. I’ve had em for 5 years in 4 E39s.
Would you say the e39 M5 is more affordable/reliable than the e46 M3? I've sunk over 10gs already on mine in the past 3 years lol
Ouch! controversial but ill take the "yes" side with two simple examples...S62 is not as volatile as S54, plus no valve adjustment needed. And no Rear subframe issues.
they are beautiful, but im glad I went with a m113 amg. I do think the e39 m5 is better looking.
I agree on how great the e39 looks in fact it was so good they had to drastically change in 2004 and that car looks flabby and is a bit of a pig .
I'm thinking about buying a audi a8 D2 4.2 or a bmw m5 e39
I can't choose which one to buy
In Sweden the bmw is about double the price of the audi
Köp bmw m5 e39 den är väldigt bra och fin bil
I have owned three e39s two of them 01 m5s. These are not unreliable cars or are they hard to work on. The chew trough clutches and tires.
Nice how many miles on each? How come you had 3?
Took me a full year and around 7k to get rid of my first one!
its in and out...it comes back when I'm having a shitty day, and goes away when I don't care. It's an asshole.
Had a hard laugh...
I thought only my M5 would have this childish behaving CEL issue 😂😂😂
I’m shocked people don’t like the wood trim. I guess Beamer drives don’t drive it for a luxury feel
I have one and it has been in the shop for over a year because I can't get the freaking mafs, so I bought a 400+hp 135i last week and it is a freaking missile the former owner told me it butchers m3s
Is that steering wheel stock? Looks identical to the one on my 2001 330ci. All the e39 m5's ive seen have a bulkier wheel with a huge airbag.
Yup the wheel is stock. I think it was changed for 2001-2003
The part where you said it didn't feel like it was pulling at 2500rpm with 60% throttle, do you think that could be a sensor issue.
Was saying exactly the opposite "60% throttle and it does that...I'll take it" meaning it pulled really nicely from down low.
I wanna get a project car similar to this, what would you guys recommend? I know very little about cars but I want to learn. Looking for a sporty 2/door
speeding tickets magnet huh
your windshield wiper relay is toast.
Yessir! Smashed it against a table 3 years ago and it's worked ever since lol
aftermarket sway bars will fix the understeer, bmw made the car understeer because of safety.
You just got a new subscriber, great video
Thanks, I just pulled the car out for it’s first spring-ish drive. Cannot wait for some maintenance and road trips
@@TedwardDrivesmaybe I'll see it at an event! I go to school in RI and live in Maine
@@alexdemars872 my "home" event is the Cars and Coffee at Larz Anderson in Brookline, MA....But I'm going to be traveling more this season so if you see me, definitely flag me down and say hi
Extended leather FTW
is 30k enough to drive an m5 for 5-6 years?
For maintenance? Absolutely. You'd be able to buy a nice car for 20-25 and probably put 5 into it over those years
How come your cup holders can't hold a drink?? I have an e39 an it can hold a heineken bottle... But they're kinda fragile.
I'm now on the fence, do i buy a e39 m5, or e46 m3. :(
cool car and video man👍
I disagree with you on couple things but the e39 M5 is the best car ever made and rare you said everybody has a carbon Black M5? Where ? hardly see any e39 m5’s on the road.just the new ones which are trash
dude your interior is mint.. how?!
Very few times are the rear seats used, and I use a lot of leather conditioner lol
Get a Dinan Exhaust
