We need more night drives! I almost forgot how good they are
I'm your fan
@@yahabratku7074 wow nice
How could you forget?!
This is probably the car I would buy all those years back when it was new
"Keep your classics alive."
That's exactly what I'm doing to my 2003 Ford Crown Victoria in Aspen green metallic. I'm never getting rid of him!
God the Angel lights look good, Ted!
Thanks! The night shots were so fun to shoot
BMWs of the 80s to early 2000's and such are connected together like a fine watch. Nothing more than needed. Just get in and drive.
E90 and e60 drove just as well very likely better. My e61 doesn't feel as solid as my e39 but I wonder how much that has to do with aluminum doors. Still have hydraulic steering and non adjustable goldilocks suspension
The shifters say otherwise. Yuck.
@@jonytube Their shifters are perfectly fine.
@@tommeiner9983 early 2000s E46 shifters are horrible
Love this car. LOVE!
4:15 I appreciate that you are the type of driver to turn off their brights when an oncoming car is coming
I’m not a monster 😂
Isn’t that normal in the USA?
@@35dd Not really, people often turn their brain off when driving here.
@@vaughanq You would love Germany 🇩🇪 🤣
Keep them on in Germany and every single oncoming vehicle will let you know
We definitely need more of this night drives. It's weird but I find it very relaxing to watch and it must also feel relaxing to be there driving on the scene I suppose. By the way I have no idea when will the snow come to your place (if it even does) but I also loved the snow drive you made with your m3 some time ago. That is a pretty relaxing type of video I like.
About the suspension I think that buying a stock one would be nice but you can give it a try to a new different suspension just to see and have the experience.
But anyway, this was a good video. Keep up the good work man! :)
I'm absolutely agree with you.
Greetings from Germany:)
The taillights look so good! I just went with brighter and more blue (but not actually blue) license plate lights and it makes it look so much more modern
Still, a beautiful timeless car, I'm badly saving up for one and these videos always give me hope for it, thanks for these vids Ted, keep it up man!.
Thank you! Keep pushing!
A night drive towards a sunrise on a mountain is quite meditating. Love it!
I wish i was more of a morning person like you!
@@TedwardDrives What you could do is simply go to bed later. At some point there will be a sunrise 😅
What happened to your videos? They were great
@@TuddecBMW Unfortunately, too many idiots started posting videos from that region but with horrible driving style. Too risky to keep mine up as our "race control" started looking around online.
@@slaWterCH ah. Shame…
This video brings back so many good memories...I had an E39 540i with the dreamy V8 and 6-speed manual. Night drives were always my favorite! Thanks for posting Tedward!
(P.s. Would love to see more night drive videos as well!)
Nightdrives are so soothing man!
I’m excited for the snow driving this winter!
Night driving is just so calming without all the other drivers on the road during the day its a relaxing sensation for me. Love the videos
Haha, I love it when you honked at the red light runner!
What an upload!!!
yes someone finally understands after watching you for so long i also drive with my fog lights on in my 05 pontiac vibe but my parent is like don't drive with those on its not foggy out not even close!
Night drives are the best. So calming.
Always loved the E39. So smooth & refined yet not numb & boring.
My favorite videos of yours is that Night drive M3 while it was snowing. Love night drives.
Night drives feel absolutely specials indeed, wether it's on back roads or just crossing the city, some busy streets, and some very quiet. The amber cockpit color is soft to the eyes, and you feel in a cocoon I like that feeling. I do use my fogs too, it gives the extra pop in light at the front and on the bacl roads, it's a lot safer because you can see the side of the road too.
Night driving is probably the best form of therapy out there for car guys.
this is literally my favorite bmw of all time and im not a big beamer guy
I want a Z3, that’s a two seater. I like BMW and Porsche
This video has convinced me to order the new lights for my 94 Accord. Its a gem for being a 220,000 mile car but the lights it has aren't good enough for backwoods highways at night in my opinion, Especially after getting good lights in my work truck
its wild what a good set of headlights can do. New honda lights are incredible and obviously goes a long way to improve safety
@@TedwardDrives It really is, my e28 built for the North American market came with the sealed beam headlights I believe were required by law at one time. It was not at all enjoyable to drive at night, in fact it was dangerous. So, I did a full Euro conversion on this car including the headlights they use in Europe. It's literally night and day ;)
A bit late, but have you considered the 9012 HIR2 headlight bulb upgrade? Made a big difference at night for my ‘91 Accord!
My uncle used to have one of these, and he made similar comments about the mid-range torque. He said it just seemed to have power all the time and was addicting to drive fast. I could see that!
Anyone can get a LS-swapped RWD car with KWs, and you can create a well honed missile. I think the fact that you're still driving on original factory suspension speaks to their quality and you'll keep what makes the E39 so special - it's split personality. With OEM suspension it soaks up pavement imperfections like magic and with a light throttle application and short shifting, you have a near silent, effortless V8 gently pushing you through town. Outside of town when the double yellow disappears, throw it down a gear or two and the S62 roars to life and just as effortlessly allows you to climb to the head of the pack, through the turns there's just enough perfectly controlled body roll to tell you exactly what your 3,700lb limo is doing. Stays flat enough through the all but the most demanding situations.
This is a vehicle that has a split personality, but expertly so. For all of it's performance it doesn't sacrifice comfort and vice versa. All the low end torque of an NA V8 with the HP of a high revving top end. This was built during an era when luxury was defined as engineering precision and high quality materials. In order to get a vehicle with the quality of craftsmanship that was achieved with the E39 and E38 in today's vehicles you have to look to lower volume luxury brands, whereas the modern 5 and 7 series quality of materials and engineering feel more like Lexus and less like the yuppie status mobiles of the 90s.
Fun fact: in Germany you get a 20€ ticket if you drive around with you foglights on despite good visibility (e.g. no bad weather like fog, rain or snow)
Same goes for the rear fog lamps
That’s pretty stupid. I guess the US does one thing correctly 😂
@@TedwardDrives I think the reasoning behind it is to avoid dazzling other drivers. Here in Germany a lot of people retrofit semi legal LED lights on their older cars and if you turn those on it can be a bit much haha
But I have never heard anybody getting a ticket for that since my dad got one before I was born
Bilstein HD shocks with standard springs.
I daily a 540i 6 speed sport and fitted the Bilstein HD there bit firmer than the standard shocks but not full on crazy and last much better than the factory shocks.
The two biggest improvements I've done to improve how the car drives was replacing the shocks and new gearbox mounts. Just really tightened the handling and great shift.
100% do more night drives, SO relaxing to watch
Night drives are the best 🔥🔥
The M62 and S62 pull really smoothly. Great torque curve.
I love E39s, the best looking sedan ever built in my humble opinion. Even now they are just nice to be in. Sure the drink holders suck and the dot matrix display fails and they're a pain to work on etc etc, but if you keep on top of maintenance they're amazing cars to both drive and look at.
One of my fav cars thanks for the binaural audio this is amazing. I had a 540i
Golden times for BMW!
This has always been one of my favorite cars!
I went with KW and Bilstein!
It’s a sporty drive but has all the comfort of the original suspension!
If you want to get away from traffic, come move to the south! I'm just outside of Nashville, stunning driving roads, no traffic, super nice people. Its great (:
I vote Dinans + Konis. The drop is minimal, but the handling gains are big, especially as you push the car even a little bit. So much more confidence-inspiring.
Hey tedward! As soon as I saw your vid of the m3 in the snow I subbed as fast as I could. Your my faverate youtuber now and that rusty jeep is one of my favorite vids. Keep up the awesome vids
Thank you!!
Driving with fog lights on here in Romania can get you a ticket and a fine. Stupid laws made by stupid people. And yes, the fog lights do help judge the width of a car better and also gives a bit of extra side lighting which is a blessing in disguise when driving in some lone village at night. I don’t wanna risk my E81’s intercooler for roadkill.
Some fog lights are not reflector type, so they're sometimes as bad as high beam in terms of the annoying glare they produce. I have no idea why people drive with high beams either, unless they're night blind or something, or the road is properly bad (i'm from russia, so i know what bad means).
As for cats and foxes, they don't give a shit about you until you're about 30 meters away, and that's when they make the leap that kills them.
@@zloychechen5150 and I am from Romania. Bad roads make us good drivers tbh. And yes, there is no reason to drive with high beams on unless you are either blind or some asshole with tripped out lights trying to look cool.
Drive safe comerade!
I think, night drives are a welcome addition to the channel!😁
Holy crap those lights look epic man.
Move on up to Stowe! I like the night drives. Especially the winter ones in the E-92. There is something relaxing about it when it’s snowing. Plus it’s great to see one out in the snow with good winter tires doing just fine. I’m scared to take mine out in the winters.
Thank you for the content. More of the super classic sedan man!!
Definitely try out KW Street Comfort or KW1!
great driving experience bmw are eternal. love your work bro.you love cars. please next time try a classic renault gordini. a real legend .
Stunning German supercar ❤️
You stepping up on the B-Roll game, man!
good video mate greetings from germany and german autobahn
Look into Bilstein B8 shocks with Intrax springs. It’s a common alternative to the Koni/Dinan setup
I completely agree with the fog light thing
Love these night drives!
I-90 at night is so relaxing
I live in newton massachusetts in auburndale, I just found your videos, super cool seeing you drive these cars on the roads I grew up on. Crazy that you get away with it with how bad the roads in newton are😂 stay safe my man maybe I'll see you one day
Really like the oldschool BMW content!
How is the e92 doing, planning on doing another video with it?
It's been at Wile Motorsport getting some sensors replaced and a Driveshaft rebuilt because it was starting to make some driveline vibrations. Looking forward to getting it back to keep the miles off the M5 lol
@@TedwardDrives As long as you take good care of it 👍
Almost nostalgic watching the old e92 vids with all these supercars on the channel nowadays.
Which are also awesome ofcorse just gotta love these older beamers :D
Wonderful car. They are also quite rare here in germany. Can't remember the last time I've seen one :p
That’s amazing! I assumed that virtually all cool German cars would be more prolific there than in the USA.
Ted, I'd go for the Konis and Dinan Springs. Talking brakes, maybe just steel braided lines, great fluid and some high performance pads should do. I love the Hawk HP Plus (not HPS, go for the HP Plus!). They can be noisy some times, but it's nothing crazy and their feel is just AMAZING. They last forever and never seem to lose braking power. Love it.
In my 540i here in Brazil, I have the OEM EDC dampers paired with Eibach Pro Kits and I really like it. Not that low, still comfortable and feels a touch firmer than OEM M5s. I love'em. Maybe you can look for that too.
I missed these ones
Not me Impatiently waiting for Tedward to hoon the beemers in some snow every year 👀
Definitely go for the Dinan suspension, make a good handing car even better
night drives are awsome in a BMW
This was surprising loved the video keep up the work. ❤️
Can’t wait for the suspension update. Mine is in need as well. Dreaming of a bushing refresh with Ground Control coilovers, which may be a bit extreme.
You drive stick really well! Amazing car too!
I've heard one of these with a straight pipe, damn son, the noise.
Got the same with my T5 engine, it feels like it's right to shift at 5200 even though it should make peak power at 6000, the thing makes so much torque all through that rev range that unless you're racing someone, which ne ver happens, 5200 rpm in 2nd and 3rd will have you braking the speed limit easy.
These things were cheap and affordable to get in Germany a few years ago in a good shape. But now where the used car market is fucked you can't find a good one under 20k
I needed this.
Night drives in a v8 hit different
"Keep your classics alive."
_Cries in classic Subaru that needs like $10k in rust repair._
id go with koni and lowering springs, itll give you better handling and make it feel more modern
Nice vid! Very relaxing 😌
My wife and I are wishing we were driving our 02 LM Blue right now.
Definety need more night drives and could you pls do a night o day light vide o f the 911 before winter? Miss that car
Love the editing error at 7:08 - 7:17 😂
happens to the best of us ahahaha
Lol you caught me! I probably thought I saw blue lights and had to reset. I’ll leave it in :p
@@TedwardDrives Yeah that makes sense, we saw how you looked at your rear view mirror for a bit! Keep up the great content Tedward!
Would be interesting to do night drives with other cars you review.
Koni yellow with stock height is the way too go
Que carro lindo, Manda um salve para o Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Run some EBC brakes on ur unit. I'm running yellowstuff on my W211 and they work grape 👌. And yes doing that lowered suspension setup would be mint.
very soothing
Don't you worry Ted, I watch all the ads! Gotta get that farm soon 😁
😂 gotta get the farm!!! Then I can be like Harry Metcalf and play with big tractors
Love your bad driver commentary at the end of the video. I do the same thing, especially at night, where I'm mad, and then I worry they are drunk or otherwise incapacitated (i.e. cell phone), and a few minutes later I'm thinking through how I will react if they do something dangerous and what I'm going to say during the hypothetical accident investigation that I have invented in my mind.
Try running ATF in the gearbox. Got rid of all the nasty crunch at low temps in my friends manual M5. Found out by chance on a BMW forum.
It has ATF. That’s the spec. Not supposed to run anything else. There’s even a sticker on the transmission that says “atf only”
Replace the MTF fluid with some ATF fluid. Should help with the cold star shifts. Watch some of M539 maintenance videos of his E39 M5.
The spec is ATF. Even says it on the transmission. There should never be mtf in this gearbox. It was just serviced a few weeks ago
And my boy getting sponsorships haha
Iam looking forward for winter povs :)
Good thing the E39's Nav LCD can be switched off. The E60's iDrive can't - you switch it off but the backlight still stays on :D
7:48 haha a dead Ted. But love these night drives
Try finding two rears and run a squared set up 275/30/18 R A1's and do a reaction video, it wont rival newer cars, it'll blow past them lol and as far as suspension? coilovers all day and dinan monoball upgrade.
Fog lights can only be used when they are required in germany, sadly.
I think the reason is that foglights don't have a sharp cut-off at the top, and because of that can blind drivers a bit.
i want this car man...
You should live stream a POV drive.
I love Amber or green gauges man... I don't really like the way things have gone to white or just all digital. Seeing the gauges feels like a machine, or a mechanical watch
You would be fined in Sweden, as driving with the fog lights on in the dark in clear weather with “good” visibility is illegal.
You would also be fined for “under taking” or passing on the right, which is only allowed on roads with a 70Km/h or lower speed limit or in traffic or if the lines separating the lanes is “solid” or thicker square like.
Idk if you heard about Sreten(M5E39 Restoration) he is Broke My Wallet fanatic
Do your fog lights just turn on in the front? Or is it the rear light(s) as well? It always bugs me when people have the rear fog lights on as they are super bright and blinding. And I think most people don't realise as it is not highlighted as much in the dash compared to high beams.
As you always say, respect the drive. Thanks for the night time POV! Your M5 is lovely.
Just the front. Rear fogs seem disrespectful 😂
@@TedwardDrives Hah, thanks for confirming!
Out of curiosity, in the owner's manual, are the lights referred to as "fog lights" or "auxiliary driving lights"? If I'm not mistaken in my E46's manual I owned in South Africa it was "auxiliary driving lights".
I did use them if I had to navigate around the suburbs because many roads didn't have lights. But, on the highway or faster roads I kept it off because it lit up the road too much near the car when I needed more light further ahead.
I would say keep it OE(M).
Regarding the brakes US-versions had different brake discs (one piece design; front 34112229527, …528, rear non directional 34212229379) than EU versions (two piece floating design; front 34112282803, …804, rear 34212228801, …802) and different front brake pads (US: 34112282165; EU: 34112282556) so this may be an upgrade. As far as I know, from an engineering stand point, fixed multi piston calipers have no brake force/stopping distance advantage to floating calipers but rather heat up the brake fluid more. Therefore i am suspicious on big brake kits for street use and wouldnt go this route for this car and its intended purpose (preserving and enjoing on street).
Oh yeh love night drives, but can be sketch with deer where I live. So typically I don't like driving older cars. Also for springs probably stocks, I would imagine Dinan lowering springs would ride stiffer. Imo the E39 is better softer and more luxurious.
