The shell compatibility is so annoying. I hate the feeling of finding a cool shell, only to realize it won’t work with my IPS kit. All that aside, this looks like an awesome kit
MAN! I finally did it, after watching a handfull of your videos. I got myself this screen and soldered it myself. Thank a million. My GBA is now an amazing thing!!
Love this Jake, excellent video as always and genuinely useful getting these comparisons when there are so many screens on the market. Funny that they often use select/L/R because I've been playing a lot of STEPPER and it uses select and L/R for its main control system! So I'm making a GBA with the FunnyPlaying touchpads only my main GBA for that one haha
Jay I received all the parts and tools in the mail and finally finished this awesome build! Looks beautiful and the GBA is so much better with this screen and USB-c charging (which I ordered with my kit) is also an awesome upgrade. The build was great BUT there are a few important notes which I didn't pick up in the video: - The plastic shell is a bit softer than the original and does not match very well with the original screws. On the first try it was a pain to fit everything together and required a lot of force to screw everything into place. As a result, the pole which holds the bottom screw inside the battery compartment actually broke off. I managed to glue this back into place with superglue and on the second attempt, with the replacement screws from Hispeedio, everything came together smoothly. I also have one minor crack in another place. - I fitted the upper touch sensor right above where the flex cable sits (this is the most natural place to fit the sensor, I believe I also saw it sitting there in Hispeedio's instructions). However, apparently the flex cable interacts with the sensor and causes it to keep switching between screen modes. Very annoying of course, so I opened everything up again and fitted the sensor more to the right side of the GBA. All in all I never use these sensors and would skip them in a next build. Hope this helps!
it seems like the part that separated from your LCD was just the protective housing. they tend to have a plastic frame and foil backing that protects the panel itself. So that plastic frame probably just came separated from the panel which is laminated to the glass.
The main problem with the FunnyPlaying v3 kit is the high failure rate. I've build dozen of the V2 GBAs without a single problem, but four out of ten V3 displays where broken or had vertical lines after a few hours of gameplay! And the v3 shells are fragile, don't tighten the screws to hard or they will break!
Was that your experience with only their laminated ips kits? Was interested in getting their laminated tft version but if it has similar issues I might just get this kit or the cloud game store laminated kit instead.
@@pspsmallz haven’t tried their laminated ita kit but it’s just a DSi screen so it should be fine. I just hate funnyplaying’s laminated shells. They are garbage
@@ratzpop I would go watch my video on that kit or wait a couple weeks when I explain it all again in my IPS Kit comparison video I’m working on. It’s too much to write out
Hi while they haven't separated the screen enough, it may be best to put the scren on a iced gell pad with cloth so that LCD don't get overheated (plus a fan maybe).
2:20 Color Pallettes is not dumb! There are some people who have problems with color. Like my friend who loves retro gaming. He has a problem with bright colors especially Neons. Even brightness adjustment can't do anything with his problem. When he saw some reviews about color palettes in gameboys, he didn't hesitate to buy those gameboy screen kits. He prefer the purple and pink palettes for those are not causing him headaches. Sometimes those kit were made by choice or intentional maybe for some people with those kinds of problem.
I did the part at 6:40 to remove the touch pads and I kinda regret it, now there are a few light leaks (visible only when the screen is fully black), probably because things moved a little when removing the shielding and putting it back on. If you do this mod, I'd advise against doing this part, just cut the wire with scissors if you don't want the pads
@@SuperRainbowPoptarts No problem! After cutting them, apply some kapton tape on the ends to make sure they never make contact with anything and you should be good

Great video! I've become skeptical about touch pads though. The first GBA I owned had two touch pads for brightness and palette. I don't know the brand and haven't really tried to find out (could be a CGS). However, after half a year, the palette pad just randomly activates, or gets stuck on a colour.
Thanks for the instruction! The modification of the display went smoothly. However, the power indicator constantly flickers between green and red. How can this be fixed?
IPS V5 it's really cool, very easy to install, but it would be nice that the three cables were previously soldered to avoid a possible dark spot, like mine 🥲 I hope they re-release an update just to make it easier.

I haven't done any modding myself yet, but been watching videos like this for various kits to pick some mods out to get. In another video (for a different kit) it was mentioned for this issue to try loosening the screws on the back plate ever so slightly. Maybe try this to see if it helps?

So I went the solderless route like you said on your video and it lit up for like a second when I tested it and after that it stopped and I don’t know exactly where I went wrong
@@JakeSimmons I have another question, what temperature do you recommend setting the soldering iron to so that it's hot enough to melt the solder but it's not so hot that it damages the screen? I will be using leaded solder
@@ChewyChicken589 leaded solder will melt at a lower temperature than lead free. I use lead free and usually solder at 300°C. @@JakeSimmons I guess I have no choice I've never soldered before and I definitely don't want to damage anything. Hopefully the touch pads are not too much of a pain. Thanks for the info!!
Are there any downsides of the laminated screen? I have a normal drop in and now I found out that there are laminated screens and I'm not sure if I should buy a laminated one
So… i just installed the screen and suddenly the color started changing seemingly at random. Started looking around for causes and solutions until you mentioned the touch pads. Turns out touching the top of my Advance SP at a certain point makes it change colors. I laughed so hard. Thank you!
What shell would you recommend for this in the time being if there isn't one specifically made for the screen? I was just about to do a funnyplaying screen mode but might pick this up instead.
I’d either buy it with a shell from the AliExpress link or wait and buy it from ZedLabz when they get the listing going. Or if you’re willing to try trimming, you can do that to pretty much any GBA shell that isn’t funnyplaying’s laminated kit shell
I have the exact same kit. I cannot screw the gameboy down. Neither the mainboard nor the case. It clips in at the bottom, but not the top. Every screw, even the ones from the original case wont work and are hard to screw down to a point where the board feels like breaking. I really dont now whatto do, ive been trying for days
Is the pixel grid effect on this one a real grid? The FP IPS V3 kit doesn't integer scale on the horizontal axis, so its pixel "grid" effect is actually just scanlines.
So my shell unfortunately broke and i was wondering how difficult it is to rehouse the ips display into a new shell after already installing. Does it just slide out like it slid in?
I know a guy whos got that constanly pressed R button you mentioned, what would you recommend to him to do? how you fixed it when it happened to you? everything looks fine on the board, btw that guy is me 😂
Haha do you have the L and R wires soldered to the test pads? If so, I’d solder them to the pins on the back like I did in this video. If not, make sure the wires aren’t pinched when everything is shut and make sure you’re soldered to the correct spot. If you’re soldered to ground, that’s gonna cause it to constantly be pressed
from some of the other videos of this kit i’ve seen, it looks like the screen is somewhat regressed, and if you have it at certain angles small bits of the edges cut off. i was wondering if the funny playing kit had something similar or if none of it was cut off reguardless of the angle
There’s a switch in the cart slot that might be stuck or dirty. It gets pushed down when you put in original carts to switch the voltage. It’s supposed to spring back up when you remove the game and shouldn’t be touched by GBA games because there’s a notch in the cartridge
@@JakeSimmons I see, thank you. I got it to work. Put a little bit of WD-40 and pushed it with a q tips and it started to read. Thank you for responding man 🙏🙏🙏
Can you remove the metal shield(behind screen) after sticking in to the front shell? I'm planning to use touchpads and if they go wrong, I'll solder wires to the motherboard. I hope that we don't need to pull off screen from the shell to just remove metal shield behind the screen.
After installing a bunch on these, I just install the touch pads because it’s difficult to remove the shielding. They aren’t very sensitive so you probably won’t have any issues of them accidentally going off as long as you don’t place them where you commonly touch the game boy. But to answer question, yes you can remove the shielding after, it’s just gonna be a lot harder while it’s stuck to the shell
@@JakeSimmons Thanks! I just recieved my GBA and IPS/Shell set today. I've installed pads directly and one at the top(color option) doesn't even detect over the plastic shell, actually it is totally ok for me. Brightness controller works perfectly beneath screen lens. I hope they stay like this forever lol
So I just completed my GBA laminated screen v5 from hispeedio. Everything seemed good until like an hour later and the brightness setting would not work right. The right and left bumpers wouldn’t increase or decrease the brightness and I couldn’t cycle the other options. Then after a minute it just started cycling through all the options. I’m a little discouraged at the moment so any help would be appreciated. Note I opted for the soldered version.
My best guess without seeing it is that something is bridging. I would double check that your solder job isn’t touching anything else around it and/or you didn’t pinch any of the wires when you put the shell together. It’s very common for those things to happen and cause the brightness controls to either not work or go crazy. Especially double check that you solder to the correct pins on L and R and that your select wire isn’t touching any of the vias (tiny holes) around tp2. Hope this helps!
@@JakeSimmons alright I’ll check those out after work. I’ve noticed if I haven’t played in a bit that everything starts working properly again. Then after about twenty minutes it goes haywire again. Not sure if the heat from the motherboard is causing the solder to expand somewhere and bridge maybe and then when it cools it’s good until it heats up again… I’m clearly just throwing spaghetti at the wall with this theory. Even so, have you seen anything like that anywhere?
It’s because makho asked for an unsaturated color mode to replicate the original colors of the GBA games, however these Chinese companies who manufacture them didn’t understand what he meant. So here we are… with ten unnecessary color modes. 😅
I bought one pre modded but it didn’t say what screen it has. It also has HDMI out but how do I know if I can add scan lines? The screen has the touch brightness with 10 levels and palette changes but that’s all I know.
Man im not mad im just annoyed with the shell compatibility i bougjt this skyfer the sky dragon shell then i watched uour video and now im nervous when my shell and screen gets here im hoping it works well
I ordered this kit from them but I was dissapointed to find they don't seem to do a compatible shell in the Glacier color (the original clear blueish color). They didn't have names for the colors either so I just chose color "16" as it looked the closest to the original color I am looking for but it could just be plain clear and not Glacier. It's hard to tell from the pictures cus the lighting varies from shell to shell in the pictures.
@@JakeSimmons Turns out it was just a standard clear / frosted shell lol. Not too bothered it was only an extra 5 bucks ontop of the LCD price. I have found a Glacier shell on Amazon so I'll just use my Dremel to trim it down. I've got one of those flexible extensions for the Dremel that I've used for very similar things so I'm confident I'll do a better job than the Aliexpress guys did on the shell they provided. The shell that came with the LCD V5 kit wasn't great. You could see where they had trimmed it themselves before sending it out.
@@JakeSimmons sorry for asking so many questions, but is there any other ways to purchase the screen other than Aliexpress, ZedLabz, or Retro Game Repair Shop?
Would there be any issues from me modding it to have an IPS screen and use a flash card? Since its an old console would it just strain it too much and destroy whatever lifespan is left of it? Will battery life be too poor on the default brightness? [no soldering experience] _ i was thinking about buying the hispeed kit and was worried my gba's just too old for using this and a flash card
Solderless drop in rechargeable battery mods? That sounds crazy. That's good i mean I've had my GBA for like over 20 years so my main concern is it just getting too strained from using an IPS screen. But in fairness it hasnt been used in like 15 years. I just dont want to buy it and suddenly my gba's just too old to function
@@JakeSimmons Finally got the kits in, and they're alright, but the buttons were sadly too small and quite loose. Ended up just using the original buttons and D-pad. Plus the pastic is pretty brittle, I tore through the battery panel while doing that bottom screw, left a bump on the front of the Gameboy too sadly. That's likely due to this being my first reshelling.
I am having trouble with all screws going into the highspeedido shell. Is anyone else having or had this issue? Looking for advice. If I put anymore force into them I’ll strip the screws. Tried both oem and screws that came with shell.
Wouldn't it be possible to remove the PCB from the display using a small string? I want to do this sometime but I am really concerned about soldering on top of the display
It’s gotta be possible to remove it, but I’m not sure how sticky the tape is. You might end up damaging it before getting the chance to solder :/ If you use flux and don’t put heat on the board/screen for more than a second at a time, you should be fine. Flux helps so much
I just had this mod kit last week It seems perfect but there is an issue with the power led It keeps flickering all the time. I tried with the regular lcd and it doesnt happen. I think Ips screen consumes too much power that leads to this flicker.
Dirty power switch + low voltage batteries (NiMh)? These IPS screens suck a lot of power. Clean the switch first, if it persists then swap batteries to 1.5v AA (assuming you’re not already).
Yes but you need to make sure that the end of the wire isn’t touching any metal or any parts of the edges of the shell. The wires still act as a touch pad, just with less surface area

Thanks for this review I just bought a kit. Im new to the gba modding scene. If i choose to go the solderless route what am I missing out on exactly?
No menu for the options is really all you miss. Touch pads just really suck imo
If you already have a modded screen, there’s no need to upgrade
@@JakeSimmons okay thank you!
I'm looking to use the OEM indigo shell. Will the drop in v5 look as good as the laminated v5?
Yup!
So… i just installed the screen and suddenly the color started changing seemingly at random. Started looking around for causes and solutions until you mentioned the touch pads. Turns out touching the top of my Advance SP at a certain point makes it change colors. I laughed so hard. Thank you!
Gotta love touch sensors haha
Are these laminated ips screen better than the regular ips v2 screen?
I give my thoughts on this in the first half of the video
Is the pixel grid effect on this one a real grid? The FP IPS V3 kit doesn't integer scale on the horizontal axis, so its pixel "grid" effect is actually just scanlines.
So my shell unfortunately broke and i was wondering how difficult it is to rehouse the ips display into a new shell after already installing. Does it just slide out like it slid in?
How do you feel about the buttons with these? I was seeing some comments talking about bad button quality.
All the buttons feel the same to me. Sometimes they just have duds when it comes to membranes
does the funny playing rechargeable battery fit in the hispeedido shell?
I put the screen in and soldered everything. For some reason my gba doesn’t read gba games but gbc/gb it reads fine
I hope they stay like this forever lol
anybody else struggle with putting the L and R buttons on? been stuck at this step for a few hours now.
@@MsJom123 your hands would but if that were the case😅 I’m gonna guess you’ve got a wire pinched
I think the gba kits with color palettes are for when you play game boy games on it maybe
Yeah but they have their own color palettes on the game boys with color screens
@@JakeSimmons oh yea that's fair, I completely forgot they did
It’s because makho asked for an unsaturated color mode to replicate the original colors of the GBA games, however these Chinese companies who manufacture them didn’t understand what he meant. So here we are… with ten unnecessary color modes. 😅
Do you know if there are any shells compatible with this screen besides the ones you can buy with it on their aliexpress shop (without trimming)?
Do you have issues with the menu in game? I just installed mine but have trouble unless it’s at start screen
Can you just desolder the sensors itself and not the entire wire connecting the sensors to the board?
I bought one pre modded but it didn’t say what screen it has. It also has HDMI out but how do I know if I can add scan lines? The screen has the touch brightness with 10 levels and palette changes but that’s all I know.
Honestly I have no idea
Quick question. The package includes a Glass Panel Screen len. Do you have to put it on? Or is it okay without it?
The glass lens is laminated to the screen
@@JakeSimmonsNice. Thanks for answering. I modded my first console and I really liked the outcome. Awesome video!!
Man im not mad im just annoyed with the shell compatibility i bougjt this skyfer the sky dragon shell then i watched uour video and now im nervous when my shell and screen gets here im hoping it works well
Is there anywhere that someone does this with an oem shell? What would i need to trim? :)
Yeah AliExpress listings are never the best :/
@@JakeSimmons Turns out it was just a standard clear / frosted shell lol. Not too bothered it was only an extra 5 bucks ontop of the LCD price. I have found a Glacier shell on Amazon so I'll just use my Dremel to trim it down. I've got one of those flexible extensions for the Dremel that I've used for very similar things so I'm confident I'll do a better job than the Aliexpress guys did on the shell they provided. The shell that came with the LCD V5 kit wasn't great. You could see where they had trimmed it themselves before sending it out.
Killer video ! Got one
Can you do a video without soldering?
Do you know if this will work on the Extremerate IPS ready GBA shell?
It will not
@@JakeSimmons will it fit in the original shell if I do a little trimming?
@@Apersonwhoexists137 a lot of trimming yes
ruclips.net/video/BtNSOchb_Ys/видео.html
@@JakeSimmons sorry for asking so many questions, but is there any other ways to purchase the screen other than Aliexpress, ZedLabz, or Retro Game Repair Shop?
@@Apersonwhoexists137 not that I’m aware of
So what shells are made to fit these particular screens?
What happens If I just cut the wires for the touch screen
Couldn’t you just cut off the touch sensors and isolate the cables.
I use a flash cart and it’s fine. Slightly less battery life but there are solderless drop in rechargeable battery mods that will help with that
Solderless drop in rechargeable battery mods? That sounds crazy. That's good i mean I've had my GBA for like over 20 years so my main concern is it just getting too strained from using an IPS screen. But in fairness it hasnt been used in like 15 years. I just dont want to buy it and suddenly my gba's just too old to function
Were can you find the shell that would work for this kit? I can’t find it
I take it there is no way to swap the lens at all with this mod?
Wait so is the Alixpress link the same kit as the one you're showing?
Yup
@@JakeSimmons Thanks for responding, I ended up getting two kits, two USB-C battery kits, and a knockoff Everdrive 64!
What size bit are you using? It might be too small
@@JakeSimmons I was using the two that came with the V5 kit. Going to pick up some better screw drivers tomorrow and try that out
I’m looking into getting an IPS mod, but battery life is a concern. What’s the battery like on this?
I would watch this video :-) ruclips.net/video/JYeQsmrFcr0/видео.html
Wouldn't it be possible to remove the PCB from the display using a small string?
I want to do this sometime but I am really concerned about soldering on top of the display
It’s gotta be possible to remove it, but I’m not sure how sticky the tape is. You might end up damaging it before getting the chance to solder :/ If you use flux and don’t put heat on the board/screen for more than a second at a time, you should be fine. Flux helps so much
@@JakeSimmons alright, thank you!
hmm maybe something like a coin act as an heatsink would help to not heat the pcb up and damage the screen ?@@JakeSimmons
So can this kit be used with any shell? (can it be use with default shells)
according to the manufacturer's youtube channel, yes
I know might had been mention hispeedido kit plastic or glass?
Glass!
One simple question: Where can I get that shirt. I love the direct message to Nintendo! hahahaha
My website! retroremastered.com
2:23 well i don't think that's dumb bc anyone could want to play some gbc games on their gba
The colour filters are probably for when you play og Gameboy games my bro 😁 GBA can play those remember 🤙
I just had this mod kit last week
It seems perfect but there is an issue with the power led
It keeps flickering all the time.
Where did you get the blue mat you use in your videos?
Check the tools I use link in the description!
Can you cut the touch pads off instead of soldering them off
Yes but you need to make sure that the end of the wire isn’t touching any metal or any parts of the edges of the shell. The wires still act as a touch pad, just with less surface area
