Great review, agreed with everything you guys said. Growing more fond of this channel with every honest review :) I must say, I am loving the new group set look, for both Ultegra and Dura ace :)
Nice content! Keep it up!
Can i just say this guy did such a great jon on this vid, nice concise into and clearly super enthusiastic about cycling
Excellent informative video. Thank you!
Two muscle guys from Shimano are off the camera and as soon as he's finished the video, they jump in and pack everything up and out of there in KOM time...
Oddly enough we haven't actually seen Matthew since we finished filming this. Any ideas?
When I saw "Ogled & Fondled" in my subscription feed I immediately knew it was a Matthew Allen video
He's worked hard to cultivate that reputation.
is he a desperate man?
I am so happy that I was chosen as the subscriber to get the new set free in DI2. Thank you BikeRadar!
congrats !
Thank you! This is the first time I've heard anything about the new 2017 Ultegra. So far the group set looks promising for a new bike build, but worth upgrading from 6800 Series.
really stunning... the biggest modification is the GS RD now being able to run up to am 11-34 cassette.... that's epic!
Nice review, thanks
The best group set ever built. Best group set that exists today, Oct 2020. All that anyone needs.
very nice!!!!!!! extremely Good review!
nice! With all the new DA coverage, I forgot there was a new Ultegra groupset in the line-up.
Will there be a version with integrated power meter, same as for the newest dura ace?
I just bought a 6800 crankset, thanks shimano for the price drop on old stuff!
I run the mish mash setup. 105 shifters and RD, ult cassette, DA chain, FD, and cables.
Finally....not that cheap looking grey colour! Looks great, especially the crank!
Would this fit a 2015 synapse 5 (carbon)
0:20 "ultegra is the affordable one" ..i think 105 is the affordable one?
Tiagra is the affordable one
Sora is the affordable one?
Sandy Telfer 600 tricolore?
agree....I thought 105 is the affordable one.
Don't forget about Shimano Tiagra and Sora group sets
Finally...it came out...now I can upgrade my bike...*YAAAY*
Will an Ultegra R8000 chain ring fit on a 6800 spider? I ask because these old legs want an easier time. I currently push 52/36 up front w/ 11-25 cassette. I was thinking, keep the 11-25 cassette but change chainring to compact 50/34. I'd do this to save money and make it easier to ride up hills and down hills. With 52/36 up front, I never use the 11 speed gear out back (going down hill). With a 50 chainring, 11 is accessible. Frame is Litespeed Ultimate (old school). I figure 11-25 is still do able with a compact crank. Thoughts? Should I change cassette to 11-28 or both cassette and chainring?
can you guys comment on the shapes of the hoods. Campy and SRAM use identical molds and shapes across all price point with material and internal differing (particularly campy). From as far back as 8 sp. with Ultegra lever shapes between those and their respective DA groups has always been less refined. Is this the case with 9100/8000?
In the past I always buy DA shifters then do a blend of Ultegra Cranks, brakes, F/R Mech pedals, and 105 Cassettes, chains, hub (on Mavic Open Pro)
shimano ultegra shadow rd is just like the shimano mtb shadow rd?
can you do this video for Sram Force 22 please!!!
About time they filled in the back of the spider on the cranks!!
I'm currently looking to get an Ultegra level bike with discs and I'd love the new Ultegra levers rather than the generic Shimano ones.
Does anyone know if manufacturers will be equipping their current bikes with R8000 once it's available or would they continue to use 6800 until a proper model refresh for 2018? Probably a Canyon Ultimate if anyone knows about Canyon specifically.
What is the compatibility with 6800? Eg, can I use the new FD with my existing 6800 FC?
I like the Ultegra Crankset better than the Dura Ace as well. On the Dura Ace, the arm comes to an abrupt stop. Whereas with the Ultegra it slightly slppes down which for me makes it pretty.
Ultegra is great value !
Is the new front derailleur backwards compatible with 9000/6800/5800? I presume the same for the new 9100 front derailleur too? Seems like quick fix for people who had clearance issues with the longer front arm on gravel bikes.
thechosendude if you find the answer elsewhere please put it in here. That was my first thought when I saw the new one. it could be the answer to my problem.
Yes. I used 5800 levers with a 9100 FD on a customer build.
So then if i was to change my Durace 9000 cassette to the ultegra R800 i basically have the same thing?
Sorry for the change of topic but That Boardman MTB in the background is really distracting. Only because I'm thinking of buying the exact same model next year.
Is there a review of that coming?
i've got the Dura Ace disc version and i've tried the R800 and tbh i can; tell the differene one bit. The moving parts may last longer but i doubt there is much in it. I 've saved some weight but it's very little.
I need that crankset.
hey guys can you do this also for sora r3000 and claris r2000??
Just curious: I use the Shimano Sora groupset and tbh, I'm really happy with it. Why would someone spend more than that on a groupset?
Spending more money gets you more gears so you can have a wider range and/or closer spacing, a nicer finish, nicer shifting feel, stiffer brakes, and lower weight. Higher end groupsets tend to be made from higher quality materials that age more gracefully too.
Shimano Sora is good stuff, but there are meaningful differences between different groupsets. If you're happy with what you've got, that's great, because you won't be tempted to spend all your money on something new. ;-)
Minimal changes mean DEEP discount on the 6800 series. I just got an emonda sl6 pro 2017 with a DEEEEP discount as new product is coming in with the 8000 series kit.
I own a road bike equipped with the 105 5800 groupset(11sp). Is it possible to upgrade my front derailleur with the Ultegra R8000 one without having to change anything else?
That "there's no need for an inline adjuster" phrase tingled a sensitive chord inside me ^_^
Yes you can.
Can do. You could go for a used DA 9100 one, too. It's lighter.
I own a new Ultegra 6800, but same as you, a new front derailleur with a inline adjuster in it, I instant buy :o
No you can't. You have to change the shifter too. Because the cable pull on 5800/6800/9000 front shifter is different (longer) each stroke( or shift) than the new generation 9100/r8000. The rear is probably same
+Jessy Bellmann Sorry, do you have a link to the info? Because Shimano's lineup chart (si.shimano.com) says it's compatible.
can i use a dura-ace sti at ultegra system?
No new Ultegra Di2? Always hated the look of Ultegra cranksets. The old one just looked cheap and gray. This one looks nice for a change. Also, how about the bottom bracket? Does one need to use it if they own a ceramic speed bearing as found in most Sworks models? I'm still so confused about the BB standards.
More clearance with calipers is great.
No need to bay new set?
Does anyone know if you can put the new 11 speed cassette on a 10 speed hub? I was just told by a bike shop mechanic that the new R8000 cassette is machined on the back to fit over the hub body shoulder so that it will fit onto a 10 speed hub. I just purchased an Edco Monoblock to do that, and it works really well, but it is $200. When it wears out I would really like to replace it with something from Shimano.
You may already know this but only the Ultegra R8000 11 - 34 cassette will fit a 10 speed hub. I've just bought the R8000 groupset and still have 2 Shimano pre 2013 wheels with 10 Speed hubs. I've bought an 11 - 30 cassette, & modified it by removing the 13T sprocket. By doing this an extra spacer is needed behind the cassette in order to secure the lockring with adequate torque. I used 2 old, 10 speed, silver behind cassette spacers to achieve this and it works just fine. Ok, I don't have 11 speeds , what I do have is a fully compatible groupset.
the question is: is r8000 now better then old dura ace 9000??
Is it cross compatible with 6800?
Damnit. I just bought Dura Ace 9100 !!!
can we put that cranks on MTB???
Dura-Ace is 400grams lighter is this right?
that's great and all but I think I'll stay with my SRAM red 22 groupset.
It looks good...... I'd like a power meter version like with dura ace.
Hells yeah
I spent only $1700 for a dura-ace upgrade, and dropped my hour climb time by over 2 seconds!!!! if i was in the tour, this might be the difference!!!!
Nanci A 100 percent worth it
I've been putting sram quick link on my shimano chains for years... No problem except for my chain, who turned purple, for no reasons...
What? a quick link? Take my money!
갖고싶다..,
Cranks look OK out of the box. Although, why do groupset manufacturers seem to ignore the fact they get will get scratched up & much uglier after approximately 5 minutes of use in the real world?
The new crank should be super stiff, were there people flexing the old one that I didn't know about? I don't think so..
What's that...you wanted to send it to someone in Iowa in the United States!?!? Awesome, I'll hook you up with my shipping address and some money for shipping!
Thanks for the down low. Looks the business
I feel sad that I just kitted out my bike with Ultegra. I want new and shiney things.
Are you going to make me do my own maths here? Total groupset weight and the difference to the old Ultegra and DA?
too many variations, mate.
-mech+rim
-mech+disc
-di2+rim
-di2+disc
it's hard to find a list like that for DA and that's been out for a year
good point Dave :) although they could have summed up the total weight of the reviewed groupset. found this review though, with some more details cyclingtips.com/news/shimano-ultegra-r8000-disc-rim-brakes-shifters-specs-weight-price/
2264 grams with an 11-28 cassette
is there di2 of that
y is it that I still think the new Dura-Ace is ugly yet when I look at this it looks wicked
For me it's the two-tone matt/gloss finish, almost makes them look thinner than the DA's all-gloss black.
I hate how the crank spider looks, but it's matte and that makes it look okay-ish.
I still might upgrade to DA but that fading colour kinda holds me back.
How much.....!
hi i have a question .. i bought the r8000 gruopset .. with manual break calipers .. my frame is is disk ready .. i want to add disk to this will the diskbreak r8070 be compatible with r8000 will the shifters work like usual ??
could you put this on a mountain bike so that you could have a decently fast bike on the road and still be able to use it on the trails
On a MB BB width could be ≠86mm. Then, tyre clearance could be a problem. And then, on a MB you might have a cassette exceeding the max 34T.
You would need the road shifters and you'd have the huge chainrings. It wouldn't really work well. Besides, it's not the groupset that makes a bike fast, it's the frame geometry, the frame design and the wheels.
so in other words to much work

that was the dumbest shit ever.....
...i love it.
Definitely cycling arms.
R9100 crank is most definitely two tone...
Kinda. But not in the clearly delineated way that R8000 is. It's more of a fade, and in some light it looks like it's all one colour.
I mean, that's cool. I cannot speak for R8000 but definitely did a double take after hearing that and went over to my own personal R9100 crank to take a look. There is a subtle fade between almost a black-chrome more on the rings to a black on the crank arms going on for sure at least on my example.
No: Shimano did a 10 speed quick link earlier, but it was terrible, and they dropped it within a year.
0:19 must be the weirdest cycling pants ever....hotpants with knee warmers? Girly pants with stockings and knee warmer combo?
Ha! The gripper on those shorts is mega long and a different material from the rest of the shorts. They're a pretty normal length but now we can't unsee Joe wearing lycra hotpants.
is black the only color?
also, is there any downsize to getting the medium rear derailleur? (outside the obvious marginal increase in weight)
DUREX
Nice to see that Shimano are selling the quicklinks for a reasonable price 😠
What is the name of the new chain links?
Fishing equipment.....
Sure, more expensive than 6800!
Yawn, all aesthetic. If you have 6800, not worth the upgrade. If you're still on 10 speed, this might be a worthy upgrade (or you can buy cheaper first gen 11 speed systems).
6800 is good enough.. it will be on sale too for sure
Perhaps not worth the upgrade from existing 6800... But if you can have this over the 6800 as an option on a new bike, I'd pick the R8000 for sure :)
jan-harm van der merwe, even if the same bike costs €500 more with a R8000 instead of a 6800?(I don't know if bikes are going to be a lot more expensive with the r8000 over the 6800, but, even if it is just 200 bucks more, I would still opt for the 6800, and spend 200 more on some better wheels or new helmet or so, I think you will get more from that, than the r8000....
autobot, indeed, from what I heard, the 8000 is a little bit lighter(but who is going to notice that?), and a tiny little bit stiffer(again, who is going to notice that?), and I thought that the rear derailleur is a bit more aero as well(but still, who is going to notice?), the rest is pure easthetic, and so depends on personal preference. And Shimano can say what they want about aero, stiffnes, because nobody is going to test it out...
I think everyone's dream would be Campagnolo super record groupset lol
na, Sram Eagle
Sram lacks the sexiness of a full Italian group like Super Record. IMHO.
I don't care , Campagnolo cant make 12 speed , maybe Shimano now have something but the only option now is SRAM and in this year we will get the new SRAM Eagle , the GX version so every bicycle manufacture will put that as an option on their bikes. SRAM will get a lot of bikes fitted with that because it is that cheap and good.
I buy my stuff because it works and don't need that much maintenance except for FOX , I buy that because it works superb but got moderate service intervals. Then the looks :D
speak for yourself. I find them hidious.
also their cranks look like they been used for ages when they're brand new. yeah, smart design.
Steven Foley? Hmmm... I know a Stephen Foley. I suppose you are not the same one. Do you know an Alec who runs a DFTA (Don't Feed The Animals) youtube channel? :)
fondled it a bit Lol
GCN > BikeRadar.
"we're not allowed to ride it"....... :-)
I find my 6800 shifts better and smoother than the 8000
Still with crap shifter ergonomics, how is it that everyone else got it so much more right than shimano, and when the had the chance to change it with electronic they actually got it even more wrong.
"most of us buy ultegra" lololololololol
that is funny i ride claris groupset compact with 11-28 8spd casette and I wouldn't dream of spending tons more on ultegra duraace or even 105
"affordable" lol affordable is the new Tiagra
Not allowed to ride it? Just throw it in your bike and give it a test!!!!!!!!
so glad they ended the ugly old ultegra grey, it was plain hideous
First
Congratulations!!!!
Brando you shouldn't do that anymore in 2017
just as good duel ace half the price why pay more
No triple, not buying this shit.
