Sram VS Shimano, it is quite a hot topic for everyone that rides a bike. Of course, there is Campag, but it seems to be a dying bread in comparison to the two mentioned in this video. After recently putting a FACTOR 02 build project to vote, I had a ton of questions asking me why the only options were SRAM red AXS Red and SRAM red 22 mechanical. What about Shimano, Dura Ace etc? So I thought I would make a video about this topic.

Dude! New subscriber. Off topic but I've just seen your bike fit video about mid foot cleats. What you of think of 2 sets of SDP cleats, one for sprinting and climbing out the saddle and a mid foot one for the main drags (there's room on size 44s I've checked on mine). To work with a 3 position dropper seatpost! The UCI have just banned descending on the top tube so I reckon they'll be a big up take of road bike dropper posts anyway (unless those chino wearing nonces ban them as well, that is).

@@CamNicholls I'm not exactly an engineer but I'm thinking it can't be that hard to set up with help from my local bike shop. I know a guy who does graphics for Raleigh and he likes the idea. Could be a thing one day I reckon. And if the UCI wankers ban it like they do, at least the triathletes could use it.

So you only ride groupsets from companies that give you at a big discount? Chorus 12speed can be had on wiggle for $1500AUD, why not try that on the winspace - definitely not breaking the bank if you are considering electronic options (even if you are getting sram discounts). Resale value is also pretty good. I think more variety in groupsets will make your thoughts on SRAM groupsets more interesting as well

I’ve got 2 SRAM red road group sets and love them. The only negative I’ve had with is with the batteries!! The locking tab will go brittle and brake off if left in the charger. I’m guessing it’s from heat.

Cam, thanks for sharing this, because a lot of companies forget where they were when they first started. As we all know every company can't give every person free stuff, but there are work arounds, such as hugely discounted from a past years team, or gear changes, etc. Being looked over or laughed at for attempting to be a RUclips or Content Creator Pioneer sucks, and as we both know it's a lot of work. You've done a amazing job - one to even idolize - thank you for the motivation.
Thanks for sharing this video and its truly understandable the emotional connection you have to an amazing product. I don't have the emotional connection to SRAM, because I reached out and didn't get a pleasurable response, but I'd put SRAM on all following bikes, because the product is amazing!!! Thanks again!!! 🤝

Hey Cam; it's very sad that the Cycling industry has TOO many of those type stories where a Shop, Vendor, Rep, on-line Store, etc, just flat out fails to Respond, Communicate and Professionally handle Customers (Prospective & even Current). Just like in Your example, when someone does take the Time to Listen and Respond in some fashion, it makes a strong impression & can develop into a long lasting productive relationship. It does not necessarily mean they always have the answer or can solve Your problem, sometimes it may just be a referral but they did not blow the customer (fellow cyclist) off, not even respond or worse say they will call / email back......and don't.
You could have easily (since I'm 1/2 a world away) done that to me back in 2019 but You did not & I'll always be grateful for Your gracious assistance.

Not just the road groups, also the Mountain groups. It took Shimano ages to get onto 12-speed, and they didn't even bother trying to create an electronic version after the 11-speed XTR Di2 bombed. And everybody celebrated when Shimano came out with GRX, but the truth is that SRAM doesn't need to because you can mix and match AXS components.
The only issue SRAM has is that they don't make any updated, affordable offerings for road. You pay the eye-watering prices or you buy Shimano.

I’m lucky enough to have both. Ultegra Di2 on one bike, Force eTap on another. I prefer the functionality of Sram, the single button on each side is brilliant, the wireless look is nice too. I find the performance of Shimano better though, particularly the front derailleur, the Shimano is way ahead of the SRAM in that respect. Now if you go with a 1x option then obviously you don’t need to worry about the front mech, and I’d say the Sram 1x is flawless. Maybe it’s a reason Sram love and push 1x,they know they’re not as good at shifting at the front?

Japanese here. What Carlos said pretty much sums up our culture - one of harmony, meaning we always look around, see what everyone else is doing first, and try to fit in. We didn't patent the saying, " the nail that sticks out gets hammered down" for nothing...
In other words, you won't see us innovating something; it would always be more of "improve upon existing technology" which made Toyota what it is today (they basically ripped off American cars and made them better).
Apologies on going on a tangent, but yeah, if you want to see the latest and greatest or "bleeding edge" tech coming out, Shimano is not the go-to brand....says someone who rides and loves the reliability of the R7000 series!

Really understand the emotional thing and how firms respond to queries - I have a couple of stories from the last year. At one extreme I had some Castelli overshoes that didn't cost me much but started to fall apart after less than 200 miles - the UK distributor was completely dismissive and despite having spent a lot of money in recent years on Castelli gear in recent years I've now stopped buying anything Castelli. On the other hand in December my Sram red 22 - 4 1/2 years old the right crank fractured, despite having done plenty of miles and being out of warrantly the UK distributor gave me a decent discount on a replacement. Had it in 15 different shops until one I Spain actually set it up correctly. But by then I was so tired of it I bought the old eTap upgrade kit. I do like the idea of 1X, but the range between gears is a bit high, unless you get the rotor 1x13. Which is a bit expensive. At the moment I installed Wickwërks ultra wide chainrings at my bike (53/34t), got all the gears I need for both climbs and the flats

Bought my first SRAM Red in 2008 after 30+ years with the S brand in building my first Cervelo. No reason to change at the time other than LBS gave me a better price on Sram. No complaints with the S brand over the years-really. But I did and do like the SRAM Red stuff. Bought another Red set in 2012 and a Red E-Tap group in 2016. With the SRAM Red product now on 3 bikes, no issues ever - they all still work and look new - and plan to stay on the SRAM Red path. Thanks for the video!

I subscribe to this channel and somehow missed this vid. I like the idea of 1x in theory. But I wonder if in reality it works with all the punchy hills we have around here or on my annual trip to Colorado where I do a ton of climbing.
Anyone have any thoughts on 1x road for a place with a significant amount of elevation change? Right now I ride a 52/36 by 11x32 Shimano 105 group. A few routes around here require the small ring due to short but quite steep hills in places.
Or maybe that's why I need two bikes? lol :)

The one thing that I really dislike about my Sram Rival Etap is the gear change on the front derailleur. I don't consciously remember if I am on my large ring or my smaller ring. Therefore when I do shift the front derailleur I may shift on to the wrong ring. For instance when I start going up a hill and I shift on to my smaller ring supposely but end up on my larger ring I find myself having to scurry around trying to get on to my smaller ring before I loose all momentum and topple over. At least with Shimano there is no chance of getting on the wrong ring when you tap the appropriate shift lever.

Totally respect the decision to go SRAM. Does the group set you chose shift gears the same way as Shimano? Have to say that content creators, like you, keep exposing what really matters long term in any product and that is a relationship. If you build that relationship it makes it possible to support each other in both good/bad times. I mean look at AMD fans who had to eat crow for years...but they saw a company who they felt they had a connection with and stayed with them. That is truly powerful. For me, I have no allegiance to any bike...but I do to my LBS...that means I will buy the brands he reps/sells. It really is that simple...surprised more companies don't realize this.

I have an F12 with the SRAM Red AXS eTap wireless drivetrain, Selle ITALIA saddle, Zipp 454’s and other top end parts. After a year of endless adjustments, swap outs of he BB and crankset from DUB to GXP and many calls to engineers at SRAM, the drivetrain continues to constantly drop the chain on the front chainrings. Several other guys that have similar setups that have been built at my pro shop have the same problems. If you have an F12, spare yourself the endless headaches from a drivetrain at a top price point that doesn’t work and go with Di2. Maybe someday SRAM will learn to engineer a product that actually works.
