Dan Prosser really is a joy to watch . The way he talks about suspension, the car park test reference, the enthusiasm and knowledge about cars is top level ❤ keep it up prosser
Just seems to me to be one of the regular type TV people who look like they are on ADHD medication. Sometimes when watching soccer I can only catch the odd word, some speak so fast. In car videos they talk like Boris Johnson. Putting emphasis on certain words and they pause a lot.
Never selling my V8. I've spent 20k on it in 3 years of ownership (on stock maintenance) ...and it is as good now as it was when it came out of the factory. i dont do track , so for fast road driving its up there with the very best.👍
@ I’ve replaced the suspension (H&R coil overs ), most of the air con and oil lines were corroded, oil cooler , air oil separator , it’s been with REP a few times..and is booked in with them for a carbon clean soon, front end respray due to 10 years of stone chips, Top Gear exhaust, some interior bits as they were looking a little worn,.(still to fully complete this) and other bits and bobs.
Its funny to see the Mag Ride in the original being a "must have" option and now they're failing the aftermarket has decided to swap over to coilovers.
OY07 MHL is also Audis press car that TG drove against the 911 turbo in period, so it's bound to be kept in tip top condition. I wouldn't touch a mag ride equipped car.
@stu2418 coils and dampers are more reliable. Simple as that, really. If the stock dampers weren't right for my taste, I'd probably upgrade to a KW V3 or Öhlins R&T, though I've found the R&T on my own car to come with springs that are perhaps a little too stiff.
@@howarddavies136 True about reliability but if they're not leaking I wouldn't reject a car if it had them. Especially if you're going to swap out for coils instead.
You just can't beat a gated shifter. Mid engine, well balanced, naturally aspirated, awd, manual transmission, is a pretty rare combination if you think about it, the only other cars I can think of are some versions of the gallardo.
It is. The lines flow seamlessly, the side blade covered the whole surface and not just the lower part, the grill and the lights are better integrated (was the firt car with full leds in the market)... The shape was an instant classic, as a a 911 or a Mustang. The new versions are full of stright angles which not only age bad and look like a "Lambo wannabe" but also seems like the shape is cut with an axe.
I converted my Gen 1 v8 manual to rear wheel drive, the steering feel now is even better. Unlock the character of the v8 with an aftermarket exhaust it's hands down the best sub £40k sportscar.
If i remember correctly, the mark 2 V10 had a different firing order to the original R8 V10 (odd vs even firing) and that explains the noise difference. I may be wrong though.
"You are not going to replace it" is wrong. I had an R8 exactly like the V8 one in the video, and I replaced it. Although, that was with another manual V8 R8 but with every single factory option, which is basically a golden unicorn...
Having always wanted the first-generation R8, my concerns are the service costs and the availability of certain parts that AUDI have stopped making. For now, I will stick with my 2007 A6 S Line 2.7TDI Quattro Le Mans Speck 150k on the clock and still running like new ( Rare as hen's teeth Sleeper that has been known to push the odd Subaru Impretsa on the back roads of the Lincolnshire Wolds in the wet ) and my 2002 first-generation Audi TT Quattro Turbo with 40k on the clock. (My father bought it new and gave it to me to keep). For rear-wheel driving, I will keep to my 1968 Porsche 912 right-hand drive, which I have owned for 35 years. First gen R8 one day, for sure.
That original V8 looks and sounds mega. I'm forever looking at/ being tempted by 993/996 911's. How do they compare? PS it's great to see new content over the Christmas period.
2009 Motortend big comparo track day, pro driver Pobst thought R8 would have no peer, but changed mind after P Cayman S w PDK saying "race car, race car, race car, Wow". I can say from concurrent ownership, hard to beat sounds of V8 (99 996.1 cable throttle manual, 2009 Boxster and 2016 Lexus GS F) but ownership cost of a Cayman prob lowest by far.
30k gets you a nice v8 manual with 60k and probably a clutch job already done absolutele bargain that’s how I got mine actually paid 29500 had everthing done previous owner had oil cooler all the pipes and clutch , air oil separator and new sump plus lots of other stuff best car I’ve ever owned coming from a cayman s absolutely sublime 8300 rpm lets go !!!
Audi R8 for me still the best supercar , just looks soo amazing, still dream to own one , one day 😊❤. Really hope that Audi somehow brings back R8 in the future. Guys thanks for celebrating this automotive icon the OG in this video.🤟🤟🤩🤩
I 100% believe the sweet spot was the Gen 1 V10 with the gated manual, but I'm a bit biased since I own one! 😉 But I do agree the Gen 1 is a better drivers car. It possessed so many analog elements(hydraulic steering, manual hand brake, mechanical LSDs, and of course, the atmospheric V8/V10!) and the design was timeless-- it still looks modern even today! The trademark sideblades were very distinguishing. The Gen 2 is obviously more capable and has a much nicer and more modern interior, but the electric steering is too numb, there was no manual transmission offered, and just like most supercars of the last decade, they have become too clinical and less visceral. The GT is a bit disappointing to me. They basically threw everything and the kitchen sink from the Audi Sport parts bin and called it "special". What Audi should have done was take a page from Lamborghini like they did with the STO. Make the final swan song R8 an homage to the racecar it was named after. Lightweight, RWD, more aggressive bodywork(have you seen the ABT XGT?) that would garner a "1 of xxx" number badge more than that GT they ended up offering. Long live the R8!!!! Its destined to be a future classic.
It definitely feels like our two presenters are aware that their gushing over the original is a good way to drive up prices of their next auto trader obsession 😅
Friends of mine, buying even the Audi S5 V8 car. Struggled to afford even the clutch being replaced. With many buying a car on finance. Car like this. How many could find another 10k some years for maintenance?
@ no I have a mk2 vr6 audi tt it’s a better car because I can actually avoid a pot hole or the occasional chipmunk lol the r8 takes up way more real estate on the road lol 😂 and it’s easier to got speeding ticket 🙃
The Gen 2 is much better looking! I have owned both a gated manual V10 gen 1 and now a gen 2 awd! Gen 2 is better in every way! It feels even more special than the Gen 1
Why is he talking about R8's being 25k. A bargain if you can find a well cared for example. You are going to get anything decent for 25k! Hence the reason he, and anyone sensible. Doesn't buy 25k Audi R8s. Why is he talking nonsense. You'll probably get a nice one with a manual gearbox and no problems for 50k. But by then. Would be far easier/better to spend that money on a new/nearly new Cayman with a warranty.
I bought a manual V8 R8 with 60k miles that’s got zero issues after having been checked by a specialist. £28500 2 months ago. Aftermarket exhaust, and really expensive coilovers included. There’s loads of good examples, don’t parrot things you read online without having a look yourself
As I state elsewhere. Friends of mine bought V8 Audi S5's. One guy bought a lovely one. Didn't keep it a year. Second guys one needed the engine out for a new clutch. The bill for that and few other things was around 8k. On a car he hadn't paid 10k for. Next thing he was driving a Fiesta and got an A6 for his office work. That broke down 200 miles from home and he sold it on the side of the road as he didn't have recovery on his AA. If you've got a good car, that's great. We got my girlfriend an A5 S-line Quattro for 36k pre registered when we could have got an old R8. We made the right choice. Ours is 67 plate. So now over 7 years old. Even with that, Audi say the brake discs are lipped. Whatever that means and it's 1600 quid for full replacements. In reality it's a 27k car with no hassles and still 70% left on the brake pads. Used to get warning lights regarding the computer updating. But other than one collision with a lorry. It's been no problem. Rich/sensible people don't buy old cars as it's false economy. If you've got your car on finance and get a 10k bill. Can you handle it? And if so? Why not just buy a new Cayman or Alpine/Lotus in the first place? I drove an R8 at a supercar day in 2015 and even back then it looked old. Was a great (old) car. It was old even then. No one wants the auto R8 and the manual one has clutch problems if people keep racing it off the lights. In reality it's fur coat and no knickers. Rich people I know buy the 400bhp electric Jag thing and stuff like that.
@ this is so far from your original point. You don’t need 50k for a good example, that was what you said. Rich people don’t buy old cars? Not seen the massive boom in restomods? Who owns all these old Ferraris, lambo’s and porches then? How are you comparing an A5 to an R8 that’s 10 years older and talking about bills 🤣 anyone who buys these cars knows there’s bills associated with them. I had an Evo x before this and an engine rebuild cost me £12,000. If you can’t handle that stay out of performance cars, they’re not comparable to your A5. The guy I bought the R8 from is a good friend I go to the Nurburgring with each year. He drove it hard for 10k miles, no issues outside of regular maintenance
Buddy, you are just rambling incoherently. I much rather listen to what the hosts say about the matter. And lastly, the cayman….as nice as it is, is no r8.
Guy spends have the video trying to sell stuff? He reason he's gathered together these cars. Is to try and make money out of them. Please don't be fooled it's about anything else.

Why not? The ride is better than the passives in soft and the Magrides are easy enough to get refurbed.
@stu2418 coils and dampers are more reliable. Simple as that, really. If the stock dampers weren't right for my taste, I'd probably upgrade to a KW V3 or Öhlins R&T, though I've found the R&T on my own car to come with springs that are perhaps a little too stiff.

I had mag rise on an R8 and a TTS - it was woeful even when first launched
That side blade on the original 🤌🏼
The original R8 was the best looking too.
The original design was so much more elegant, oh dear...
Imagine swapping the current V10 into this unit and bam, masterpiece
The earlier R8s are far better looking than the new ones, IMO of course.
The latest ones look too fussy.
The later R8's are amazing cars. But the old one has a timeless design and the available open gated shifter is perfection.
You just can't beat a gated shifter.
Mid engine, well balanced, naturally aspirated, awd, manual transmission, is a pretty rare combination if you think about it, the only other cars I can think of are some versions of the gallardo.
R8 is a legend in its own lifetime. Prefer the older one.
Love these “old v new” vids. You’re the man Dan.
I drove a V8 Audi R8 in 2016 and it was just really nice. Even as an automatic. Just made you feel special.
The older car is so much better looking.

For anyone who ever lusted after a 360, an R8 makes a compelling realistic alternative.
I drove both on a supercar track experience day years ago. The R8 was light years ahead, an absolute joy.
I converted my Gen 1 v8 manual to rear wheel drive, the steering feel now is even better. Unlock the character of the v8 with an aftermarket exhaust it's hands down the best sub £40k sportscar.
The original R8 V8 6MT is fast becoming a modern classic
They previously did a 2 wheel drive version and it struggled to sell. That is why they didn't bother making loads of them.
If i remember correctly, the mark 2 V10 had a different firing order to the original R8 V10 (odd vs even firing) and that explains the noise difference. I may be wrong though.

Less is more.
Get an older gen R8 V10 Manual, fix any issues and do some tasteful mods to it. Better than most modern supercars..
