Love your story, but you asked about our story, so here is my life changing event. Living, loving active life in Colorado. Great career, great friends….living the dream. Dream shattered after heavy wildfire season followed by a heavy rain season. But leading up to event, I lived in a beautiful mountain log cabin on acreage surrounded by wildlife. My drive home from work in nearby town was 1.5 hrs and to an elevation of 9,000 feet. This day, my drive was typical, following a two lane road that skirts the mountain stream as it descends the elevation with rocky, steep terrain on both sides. There were just a few eager travelers on the same journey up the pass that day and I was leading the pack. Suddenly, like in a movie, the rain saturated mountain gave way as I approached a narrow valley intersecting the hwy I was traveling on. Wow…what a site. Mud, trees, boulders flying towards me. The impact drove the flow of debris over the top of my vehicle and a giant boulder took out the front drive assembly leaving me stranded on top of a boulder in the middle of the raging mudslide. I had a lifted Hummer at the time (which from all accounts, probably saved my life). I managed to survive the terrifying event and even manage to video the slide as it dragged me downward but spared me from the death that an unfortunate driver had farther behind me. At the time, probably like you Riley, I was calm as a cucumber. I made good decisions and got some luck and survived, but not unscathed. Like you guys, the trauma hit me later as I walk down to Search and Rescue in the muddy aftermath not realizing that beneath my feet in the muddy mess somewhere was the body of that poor soul that didn’t make it. My life had changed in that moment. My home, that I had loved, dreamed and built, would never seem like home again. The slightest rainfall as I drove up the mountain pass would trigger anxiety of the potential for another slide and the only way home was up this road that had so recently tried to kill me….decision made. Home: sold. Successful career: quit. My decision was to live life on instinct and do whatever I wanted to do. So, that’s what I did. I moved to a tropical island and explored a new side of life with the ocean. Before I even got comfortable on the ocean, I bought a trihull sailing kayak (yellow 😊) and made paths to new adventures exploring all that the ocean had to offer and this new found hobby is what brought me to this RUclips channel and to this lovely family, “La Vagabonde”. Circle complete. Hope you enjoyed it Riley and thank you for sharing your story. ❤. Have a wonderful Christmas to all and look forward to 2025 with you and your amazing fans 😊❤🎉

Woahhhhhh I just read this aloud to Riley and we both have goosebumps. Thanks so much for sharing this… what a journey you’ve been on. I’m so sorry you had to go through that traumatic event, but I’m glad that somehow it brought you to a tropical paradise and a new path to life 💛✨🫶. Happy new years to you and thank you so much for being here with us x

I wish you all the best for this year! Take a nice break with all of these events. I relate so much with what you guys are living. Sending all the love ! I am student student that has just taken a Gap Year to realize my dream, and sail the whole year with my partner.
We worked very hard, paid much attention to all safety equipment and habits.
Three weeks ago, on one of our 7 day sail we got hit by a cargo ship and lost our mast and big structural damage on the boat. Luckily we were able to use the engine for the last 200NM but has put our trip to an end...
It was a really scary experience, very sad for us because our boat had become our home. However we were very happy to see how we managed the situation and it has further created a connection between us. Living these hard moments together really shows each person's profound being.

Trauma bonds! A slow motion recall stop in time, pulling together as a team, united by a stressful experience, a shocking negative turning into a vivid positive. Not the terrible experience but what’s learned. So happy you were all safe.

  • @jkingsley5671
    @jkingsley5671 16 дней назад +2

Your positivity and acceptance of the reality of this terrible situation are inspiring. I appreciate and love your honesty, as many don't share the truth of the fear, anger, anxiety and uncertainty that always walks hand in hand with disasters. You handle your grief and pain with grace! Your boys will be better men for the example you're setting. As mentioned by others, Hurricanes and flooding are the biggest events I've dealt with that strengthen and empower a community to pull together and love each other. I live in deep south Louisiana, 100 miles from New Orleans, and have been through MANY hurricanes and floods (and will weather many more I'm sure), although I have been blessed to not have my home destroyed. There is definitely a certain connection we feel to each other as Cajuns who have survived and dealt with the aftermaths of many storms over the years. I haven't felt many emotions stronger than the satisfaction, connection, gratitude and love that grows from helping each other clean up debris and rebuild our homes! None of us can thrive alone. It takes a village.... I hope your time "off" is blessed with rejuvenation and fun as a family! Oh and Riley forgot to mention the upgrades he's incorporating into the repairs... ;)

Three days into a two-week trip in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada, the engine compartment on our boat caught fire. The ironic part; just two days before, my then-girlfriend (now wife of 18 years) and I had been listening to a Mayday call on the VHF radio. I explained to her that it wasn’t a Mayday, but a Pan-pan, and explained the differences and how Maydays are actually pretty rare.
Fast forward to the fire, I turned to my wife and without explaining to her what was happening, told her, “Go up front and drop the anchor.” Then I grabbed the VHF and automated into, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday...” Her face completely dropped.
It’s a great story now, but at the time, it felt pretty surreal. What surprised me most was how calm I stayed and how I automatically went through the steps to secure the boat and people. You really never know how you’ll react in an emergency, but I’d rehearsed an emergency situation in my head enough times that it fortunately came instinctively.
Now I'm a boatless boater living vicariously though RUclipsrs.

Living last 25 years in FL with many major hurricanes I can attest when you make it through the big ones with friends, neighbors, even strangers you become a special kind of family! Strangers became instant family! Women helping me with my 3 young daughters will always be aunts! Men helping restore our roofs or power and taking time to play with all children will be uncles or papa "so & so". Yes scary things definitely make people close!

When I was young, I went sailing with my family on a Ferrier 31 trimaran (it is possible to fold it). At the time, we folded it to go into the harbor. When we left the harbor, there was so much wind that even the mast alone caught enough wind to capsize us, and we fell into the water, which was only about 6°C. At the time, it was very scary. We didn’t have a phone or VHF on board, but luckily, someone saw us and called for help. Eventually, we were rescued and checked by paramedics. My brother (who was only 5 years old at the time) was hypothermic and had to go to the hospital.
We were all very traumatized, but the first thing my father did was put us back on the boat after it was recovered. After all, we are still sailing on the same boat 7 years later, and the experience has only made my passion for sailing stronger and my bond with my family even closer.
(I am only 14 years old and live in Belgium, so excuse my English.)

Farrier 31, designed by Ian Farrier of NZ. I have a similar design , a F9-AX. You should never sail with folded hulls in strong wind, it says so in the owners manual. We always leave one hull unfolded for stability.

Hi guys. Love the show. At one stage I back-tracked and have watched every show since the beginning. 2007, living in Brisbane. I lost the whole roof of my top floor apartment. I was in the flat at the time. Yes, it re-arranges your thinking. Puts your priorities into o focus. 9 months later I moved back into the same flat. I’m a survivor. Want to know who your real friends are?
Get yourself into deep shit. Who do you call? Who turns up? I was blessed by good friends.
What got me through it all was attitude!
Always a batchelor. If you have a problem, you don’t whine, you deal with it.
By the yard it’s too hard, by the inch, it’s a cinch.
Reputation is what other people think of you.
    Character is who you are.

An event such as you guys experienced either makes you or breaks you, but you have the "bottle" to overcome it, grow from it, and learn from it. You also have the best of incentives, your two little men. I have been following you guys from the early days, but just lurking, my sailing is now done vicariously by following you and a couple of other sailors. I have just entered my 90th year, and I gave up my own boat several years ago, I do miss it. Trauma Bonds... Yes and shared hardships too. I got knocked down/inverted in a big North Pacific storm in March 2012, racing from China to California. Several crew were badly injured and the US CG sent a ship, AWACS, Hercules etc to medivac two of the crew, one of whom was very poorly with a long list of serious injuries. We limped into port 5 days later to a cacophony of the world's press and 50% of the fleet cheering us in at 3am.
During the stopover before the next race and while we were fixing the boat, the crew really bonded big time. Lots of tears and beers at the most unexpected times (the tears, not the beers. The beers we planned), but looking back on the whole experience, it was one of the most memorable and rewarding of my sailing life. Everyone did themselves proud during the event and afterwards - and we all lived. Which was nice.

I'll add a story Riley, I live in Asheville NC and we got massive land slides and flooding in our area. Our home luckily had only 4 trees come down and they landed between the houses. Amazing 2 branches hit the roof and this is what we heard. Like you it woke us up, scared the dickens out of us. When looking out the window all we could see was leaves. The power was off for 7-8 days and no potable water for 7 weeks. We did not know how bad the area in general got hit, because of no internet. Silly me did not think to start the car and listen to the radio. DA!
I felt the stress after about 4 weeks and the enormity of the event began to come home. GPS routed me into the sever damage area, when I got home I put my head on the table and began to cry just to release the stress of what I had seen.
I am glad you are safe, that you have a plan. I think you are an amazing captain and I would sail with you anywhere. good job. Love from Asheville, and keep up the good work.

@@wwomannc4834 East TN here but southeastern TN so I was merely surrounded by devastation. I could drive north, east or south relatively quickly to help. I know people in Asheville and chose NC over my own Tennesseans that still had better roadway access. It was completely pointless as so many of us were turned away. A big shout out to all of those that owned helicopters and very capable 4wd vehicles that were able to help quickly. The federal government didn't seem that concerned.

Adversity builds bonds like no other. After almost 30 yrs in NSWRFS, and some unbelievably difficult times, particularly over the past five years, I can tell you that serious challenges don't just affect individuals, but create cohesion and strength in entire communities. The effects on teams such as brigades is even more noticeable, as with the right leadership and understanding they will build unbreakable bonds similar to families. The opposite is also very true. Best wishes for the New Year, enjoy your break, and love each other.

Therapist. Right. The Therapist. But not gonna lie. Riely is Legend here. I always appreciate when Riely is explaining his sailing experience ~ "The wind off the mountains." ~ He may not be aware of how his "Sailing Expertise" comes across. Forget the accident. You are now in the "embrace" of the Japanese People. ~ the Sweet Spot of the world~. So lucky. (The IDLES !) And of course I am a Huge Fan of Ellie. Her quiet presence in the background. I know I can't spend much time about Ellie ~ sort of glue for the family. ~ whatever. So thanks for mentioning where she is. Anyway ~ Back to the Therapist. Time with a Therapist. Makes sense. Hi guys, been following you since you left greece many yers ago. We went on our own big sail from Sweden via the english Chanel, Biscay and Gibraltar into the med all the way to Slovenia before taking her back to Kiel on a truck to sail the last bit in the Baltics back to Göteborg. Was a great adventure during 18 months, but we had a serius incident in Biscay where we ran into a steel fishing boat from 90 degrees into there freeboard. Just a dent in there hull, but major damage on our bow with a big hole just above waterline. Totally my fault since they came from starboard and we where not under sail. Both me and my wife was downstairs to check the pilote books and I thought that i had scanned the horizon. Well, obviosly not good enough. We will never forget the sound of braking fiberglass and bending metal. My wife just sceamed in panic for a very long time and I remember myself in tears running up on deck screaming to the fishermen if anyone was injured. The feeling of being responsible for my wifes trauma and possibly having hurt someone on the other vessel was the worst experience of my life. Thankfully no one was physically hurt and we where able to get our boat into Le Herbaudier and the marina there for some extensive repairs. We where so well taken care of by the community in this little fishing village and got quick help with everything from glass fibre repair to rigging and stainless steel work. However, the trauma stayed with us for the whole year to come, so I think I have a good understanding of what you are now going thru. Time will make it easier, and to talk about it and analyze the events is the way forward. I cried a bit when I saw the episode and really feel what you went thru. After some time with repairs and hopefully some nice skiing you will be ready for another season onboard. A little scared, but also a bit wiser. Wish you all the best! /Magnus

I currently live in Salina Kansas almost smack dab in the middle of the U.S. You asked if anyone had ever had a devastating experience like this and yes I've had many from tornadoes to earthquakes. I lived in Los Angeles California (Sherman Oaks) and went through the Northridge earthquake which was devastating and life altering. Needless to say you learn a ton about yourself and will eventually be great full about what that is. Think of it this way it's as if God has given you superpowers. Not everyone can relate or be able to help if going through that experience but now you guys can.
Thank God you are all OK and please get a good rest and look forward to seeing you all back on here soon.

I hate to revisit, but I walked in to find my 28 year old son unalived. My other son and my good friend were living there, also, and it has brought us all 3, so much closer. Especially my living son and I. But my friend, also. They are the only ones who understand the shock and horror of the event, even though I can rely on other friends and family for comfort.
The three of us don’t live together anymore, but when we get together, there is an unspoken bond that we share. A very special understanding and connection that I’m so glad we share.

We did experience a monumental sailing experience that created a strong bond. Back in 2016 we were anchored when a 100 mph straight line wind came through at 3am (not forecasted). We were dragging toward a rock wall. The Captain (an amazing sailor) is paraplegic but with the extreme heel he couldn’t get up the campanien way. Thankfully we got a lesson on how to start the new engine just the day before. It was impossible to make headway because the dinghy, with an outboard, had flipped over but we slowly inched away from the rocks. More to the tale…but we made it. We headed back to the marina. Joked about getting a cabin and never sail again but we dried out the outboard and headed out to anchor again that night. Captain’s a therapist. He said it takes 6 months to process a peak experience. Damn straight. But the 4 of us have been tight ever since.

Hey Riley, yeah loads of life threatening and potentially catastrophic experiences that are super negative at the time yet all feel totally positive either in the immediate aftermath or in time, deepens the well. And that thing about time slowing down is absolutely true, almost the single most amazing thing.
Personal individual dynamics, performance and relationships are changed forever for the positive with the common experience and bonding through whatever was happening. With those operating at a high level it’s exhilarating and exhausting afterwards, most definitely analysing performances of others and oneself in real time and retrospectively. However with the results always seemingly the same in that everyone did what they were capable of and it is what it is.
There’s no lies in these situations and everyone weaker or stronger accepts truth, weekness and strength yet bonds all the same and forever. For those who you may not be particularly close or even kinda dislike an appreciation of there skills, talent, professionalism or lack thereof changes in that any previously negative feelings evaporate as you appreciate them as humans, accepting that others or yourself filled their roles seamlessly. In instances where all performed awesome there’s just a knowing smile and warmth seeing each other whether you were previously tight or not you are and forever will be.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and stick with the singing and guitar, you’ve got talent kiddo!

22:16 as a skydiver I have fun BUT too many times there is tragedy or close calls. You are right that it is bonding, to the point that you become like family or a 'tribe'.
I don't know if you guys have realized this yet, but when something chaotic happens our brains try to process it quickly, and sometimes weeks/months later it can traumatize you all over again and worse, and some people don't realize why they are anxious or depressed or unable to concentrate.
