Memories can definitely be false but that does not negate what happened. People just dont remember things the way a video camera would. Emotions play a part. Memories can fade or change over time. But reality doesn't fucking change, mike.

Is it though? I'd say it's bad. If Trump decides he's gods chosen instrument, he could just let our nuclear arsenal fly. No, I know you were joking but seriously, it seems like there's so much bullshit and craziness in the world now. It's like a great plague of insanity is sweeping across the population and no one knows how that will affect the future other the fact that we know it's not going to be good. With flat earthers and the crazy conspiracy theory nonsense that's seeping into politics so much that our president is one of them now... I don't think these are isolated things. It's a symptom of the information revolution for one thing. Does anyone else see it like that or is it just me?

That clip in the end was unsettling, how memories are false reconstructions of the present and how reality, the past, and history itself are also false. It can justify historical revisionism and obfuscate justice and accountability, if applied. Yes, memories are faulty and flawed as hell. Yes, memories are reconstructions of the past. Yes, I would be down for a discussions of memories and how we perceive the past, but I won’t do it so someone could deny their terrible beliefs or actions. That’s just being dishonest at best.
Sidenote: polygraph test CANNOT tell if a person is lying or not. They are extremely unreliable-causing too many false positives-and more closer to curing cancer with essential oils than anything.

The TMZ clips were hard to watch. I'm bipolar, and that's what a manic episode looks like. While I obviously don't have the authority to diagnose anybody, I can't help but feel that certain right-wing power chuds exploited West during a vulnerable time. I'm not saying he doesn't have power or agency here, but I've had my mania turned against me before. And I can't be mad at West anymore after seeing this. He may be (dangerously, willfully) wrong about a lot of stuff--and I feel like his celebrity status enables that ignorance to a toxic degree--but more than anything I feel empathy for him. This vid's a year old--how's he doing these days?
Also WOW Cerno blatantly endorsed falsifying the past, huh? And here I was thinking all that Holocaust denial and historical revisionism was more of a shitty societal coping mechanism than an actual, concentrated effort to alter the present.

YIKES. The Cernovich clip at the end really bothered me. When I remember important or traumatic experiences in my life, it's almost always from the first person, unless I had access to a mirror or experienced some kind of out-of-body experience (when I was 4, I hit my head on the sidewalk, and have a distinct memory of dad carrying me to the ER, but I know it's probably an imagining.) To say that all memories are like movies, and always in the third person, makes me think he's extremely narcissitic,. Unless that's a common thing?
Either way, saying "my memories aren't real, thus I can make them not have happened" is fucking TERRIFYING.
And in general - I'm genuinely disappointed Scott Adams has turned out so shitty. One of his books introduced me to quantum theory, and the idea of multiple universes. But this is definitely when those ideas take you too far. D:

I don’t think it’s necessarily a sign of narcissism. There are lots of reasons why someone may have third person memories. I know for me the majority of mine up until I started transitioning are in the third person because the dysphoria I was experiencing made me dissociate a lot of the time

You learn eventually that your feelings and thoughts don't matter, just how people around you feel and think about you.

The same guy who hires ex cons to make Yeezys and supports causes like the Innocence Project.
On a more personal note, Kanye took me out of this really shitty life I was living, his message of helping yourself, helping others, and loving others is most likely the reason why I'm so leftist to this day. When listening to his music its crazy to think that this guy might be a conservative. This might be one of the rare cases where one must separate the art from the artist.
I'll always be a Kanye fan, and I'm really hoping what's going on rn with him is just a phase, bc to me it seems more like he fell down the alt right pipeline than actually becoming a genuine pundit, and with some time hopefully he will climb out. He exaggerates the memory thing but there is also truth to memories being more driven by imagination than actual recalling of events, but a lot of people also lump that idea in with his general gaslighting.

Read some Scott adams stuff a couple decades ago, that’s when I first found out he honestly considered himself some sort of wizard. Paraphrasing him: I’m not particularly good at art, I owe my success to dark magic. He straight up wrote that in a book that got published.

I read a lot of Dilbert when I was younger and he would slip that kind of stuff in the biography and extra stuff in the published books all the time. Thing is, I always took it as a joke, mentioning dark magic and being a wizard. Like he was just being extra, like Daft Punk saying for so long that they are actually robots.
It wasn't until I saw Adams speak in his videos that I realised he was actually serious about all of that

Wait, Cernovich sees himself in his memories? I see out from my eyes from where I was when I remember. When he asked me to picture where I was when I found out about 9/11 I saw the TV in my friends flat, remembering what it looked like, my friend at the age she was then and her mum looking concerned from the position I was sitting in on the floor. I had no memory of myself because I wasn't looking at myself. Like it's hazy and probably the scenery is somewhat constructed from other times I'd been at her flat, but it's not like seeing myself act in a movie. Also polygraphs are tosh.

My memories are a bit of a combo between visual and internal monologue, mostly internal monologue, and I tend to see them first instead of third person.
Cernovich knows just a tiny bit about the psychology of memory, (mainly how inaccurate it is for most people --- though he seems to have forgotten about photographic memory and similar phenomenon,) and thinks he knows everything, and so he projects all his own psychology onto others, and then further draws an absurd conclusion. Our species has memories for a reason, we need them to survive, to understand how the present came to be so we can more precisely control our futures. Ironically, his ideology only serves to handicap him and make him easier to lead by the nose. Reality can just be whatever he wants so he doesn't have to do anything about it. Must be nice lol

When you realize that something you care about deeply might be unreal, it's usually much easier to conclude that you don't actually care about what's real or not rather than doing further investigation with an open mind or changing your views.
It's also, as the Dilbert guy says, often beneficial on an individual level to live in a fantasy that you deliberately construct for yourself, because behaving as if you have power is both a great way to obtain power and a great way to congratulate yourself for success that is actually a product of luck. You just probably should just refrain from voting based on your modified personal version of reality if this is how you choose to live.

23:15 23:54 This is such an immature way of thinking about the world. I actually can't believe this. Always remembering yourself being in the right or simply ignoring the past is something I literally did AS A CHILD. I REMEMBER myself doing this before I realized that "hey, maybe I just remembered wrong. Maybe I'll just be more cautious and realistic when I remember things from now on. Maybe I don't say "Yeah I saved your life," but I instead say "I remember saving your life but I could be wrong I don't remember very well." Or "I remember your life was saved but idk who it was" or fucking whatever. I literally learned that my memory is not reliable and coped with that by just accounting for it. Pretending the past LITERALLY DOESN'T EXIST because you're going to remember it wrong anyway is straight up sociopath-level insane and shows a complete lack of self-awareness and maturity. Unbelievable.
Specifically when he says "You're gonna remember yourself like you're in a movie or like you're the hero and everyone else is dumb" revealed SO MUCH about how this guy views the world. Has this guy ever even TRIED to consider that he could have been in the wrong or that other people remember things better or differently? I have aphantasia, so I can’t picture something in my head, or “watch a movie,” because my brain doesn’t function that way. Second, when I thought about where I was during 9/11, I thought of seeing it on tv, leaving my house to pick up my college carpool buddy, getting to his place, saying some frankly bigoted shit, and seeing the second plane hit on his tv while his aunt got ready for her shift on the nearby military base. I didn’t see or hear any of that happening in my head, it was just a series of events and observations. At least I have an inner monologue, which some lack.

Great video man. I agree with you. On an individual level i'm a big fan of agency-centric thinking too. I find it empowering to think that no matter my circumstance I can choose how to orient myself towards it, and make it as good as it can be, and I don't see that as wishful thinking. I see it as something that continually pays off as long as you can appreciate small gains.
However I see what you mean about the dark side of this thinking, when it loses nuance or room for exception, Some people who have effectively exploited their circumstances will turn back to the masses and say "cmon if I did it you have no excuse", and I agree with you that it's really arrogant to assume you know what is going to help people. Like the guy at the end who says "I'm me cause I worked so hard, I read these books, blah blah blah". As if that's everyones problem. Some people are just crushed by their circumstances constantly.
That being said I still don't think you're giving Peterson a fair shake, he's not an ideologue about agency, he just sees it as the most effective strategy for any individual to progress towards a better life. He talks about the necessity of a left-wing to advocate for those who are dispossessed. Sorry I can't help it, I know he's imperfect but I see him as someone who does way more good than harm. I think this type of ideological political movement has swallowed up some very good ideas, repurposed them as tools to consolidate power, and in the process made them shallow, and I know Peterson has become associated with that sort of movement, but he's a much richer thinker then that.
The only example I can think of to support this is Peterson taking about his practice as a clinical psychologist (possibly badly paraphrased). He says you cannot tell people what to do with themselves, you essentially listen to them and help them discuss their life and their problems. The goal being that they better understand themselves and be more equipped to discover solutions on their own, and that's because nobody knows what's best for anybody, and nobody is their own slave, it's through understanding yourself, your weakness, your strengths, your opportunities, your fears, and discovering wisdom through action, that you can begin to improve your life, and it's a long and gruelling process with no guarantees, but it might just be your best bet. I see that admittance of how daunting it is to address peoples lives as the opposite of ideology. That being said I really like the vid, and I totally see your point, and agree with you. Keep it up man.

Not to seem argumentative. I'm not interested in a pissing contest at all. The accurate version would be don't try to affect social change carelessly, and often people attempting to affect social change may have ulterior motives. Also, more accurately, people can do very little harm improving themselves and thier lives and so that's a good place to start. I dont believe he's ever endorsed anything of the sort in your comment and if he did you are absolutely right to call it asinine. Just a final example Peterson's a huge fan of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn who affected radical social change in the USSR with his anti Soviet writing.
